What a day. I was riding to work and my chain decided to fly off my motorcycle. This was an unusual new type of master link I'd never seen before, where you have to break off the posts after tightening the plate. In any case, the master link failed, the chain came off (taking my shifter rod with it) and boom, I'm coasting on the 5 freeway at about 70 and slowing--and trying to get over as I signal my trouble and intent. Some impatient cagers didn't really want to let me over until I made it clear that I wasn't being rude...I was just in trouble. To boot, it was a record hot day here in SoCal. I called nearly everyone I knew but nobody could pick me up. I called a local moto shop who recommended someone who recommended Cameron at Victory Lane Freight. I called Cameron and he was in Northridge finishing a job (good timing). He came straight to me, keeping me updated the whole way with time estimates, which I appreciated a lot. I had called my girlfriend to meet me earlier in an effort to escape the heat--so I chilled in her car with A/C, water, and a way to charge my phone until Cameron got there. Cameron's truck appeared to be purpose-built to handle bikes; a flatbed with wheel chocks built in, and plenty of tie-downs which he handled deftly. A lot of tow truck guys who are not used to towing bikes seem confused by bikes, or don't tie them down correctly, but I could see that Cameron knew exactly what he was doing--loading up the bike up with years of what appeared to be battle-hardened experience. The bike held firm even as the ramp went up at a crazy angle until it flattened out again, ready for transport. I paid Cameron before he left (via credit card), and he was kind enough to give me a merciful flat rate based on the estimated miles to my local mechanic (thank you), where he dropped the bike off while I went and got a new chain and a cold drink. Cameron, you knocked it out of the park man. THANK YOU for your expertise at a time when I was stranded on a brutally hot day. I heartily recommend Cameron and Victory Lane Freight! First of all, he's the only licensed moto tow in LA, so that means your bike will be covered if anything happens. More importantly, he takes great care of your bike when he handles it. His ties have this sweet lambskin covering that's real gentle on the chrome, and his truck has a custom lift/bed for motorcycles so nothing's going anywhere. PSA: It's illegal for flatbed trucks to tow motorcycles in California. Don't call a tow company, call a MOTORCYCLE tow company. And that company should be Victory Lane Freight: most companies around here don't have the right permits or insurance to tow your bike. VLF has all the permits and insurance to operate fully above-board, so you know your baby will be okay even if something goes sideways during the job. Cameron (the guy who owns and operates this business) is the man. He's timely and responsible. When my bike got a flat, he gave me an accurate and reasonable quote for the tow when I called.
