I thought that I should look around inside... Wow... It has everything... jazz, top 40, soul, hip hop, ethnic music, CDs, vinyl, movies, used, new, merchandise, and more! I was truthfully overwhelmed. I will be back when I'm more focused and have more time! Note: Amoeba Music is also in San Francisco and Berkeley.

I didn't realize at first, but the prices of the books seem to be marked in pencil on the first inside page or so, and I got a really good deal (imo!). I was in there for just a few minutes before the clerk/owner noticed me (he was busy in the back I think?) and turned on the AC and some cool music. :) That was appreciated, thank you!! The experience was fine and the sale of them went super smooth,. They were very fast checking them and having my money ready but the 2 guys behind the counter that were helping me were pretty rude and unwelcoming. Just the way they talked to me and seems very unfriendly. I've never brought items in to sell and don't know how fast they would go they them since it was a Saturday and I figured they would be busier then a weekday, I took a bunch of games to sell to GameDude a week previous and they took like 4 hours to go thru them. I literally had to drop them off and come back hours later. I didn't know if that was the norm or what. So i walked in with just my crate of CDs, because I figured I could always come back another day with the DVDs but i got called fast. Since it went quickly I figured I'd bring my DVDs in, and then I told one guy that I had a crate of DVDs to bring in also and he snapped an was like "Why didn't you bring them all in at one time?" I'm sorry I actually thought I was doing them a favor because maybe it was busy or they were short staffed. How the hell am I supposed to know? So then I brought the crate of DVDs in. I also lost my voice a few days prior and was just getting on back so my voice is pretty low at the moment l, so when I spoke to them, they were like "What? I can't hear you". Almost like I was annoying them with my low voice. I don't know if they were the owners or what, they were older guys and not some younger employee so I assume maybe owners or managers. So my point is the stores pretty cool and they have some great stuff, but the two guys in front were kinda dicks. Doubt I'll be back.

I bought out all the Blue Magic albums they had at the time and was able to find several ones that are not available on Spotify or Apple Music. My only comment is that I wish the used hip-hop section had less singles and more complete albums at reasonable prices. I will definitely return next time I'm in LA. Still searching for Stylistics and Delfonics records.

It only makes sense that I discovered this gem of a store in the middle of a dead zone like South Pasadena. One of my best friend's has his studio out in South Pasadena so I visit him often, but aside from that, it's a strange nightmare there. The city is invested with self-satisfied liberals who pat themselves in the back for using bio-degradable bags or secret conservatives who make sure a single synagogue will never be constructed in the city. Stranger than that, aside from that new mediocre frozen yogurt place around the corner and that Carrow's where I saw a hobo go loco one day, everything in this town closes before 11. Not one single bar in site. I heard the town is pretty safe, but the suicide rate must be through the roof. Don't get me wrong; I live in Reseda which is no oasis in the desert, but at least it doesn't have that obnoxious South Pasadena vibe. I really do get distracted in these reviews, huh? So, yeah, like I was saying, I discovered this place by accident. Me and the ol' battle axe wanted to find a place to eat for the evening after visiting our friend and decided to eat in the area. We walked around a bit until we were in front of Bistro De La Gare. Quaint place and small so we figured we wouldn't be spending much. After dinner, desert and lots o' wine, our server came up with our check that was close to the eighty dollar range (not including tip). In panic over the cost, I unintentionally did my best Charles Nelson Reilly impersonation ("WoOAaaAaaaHHhh!" while moving my glasses up and down) in a flurry of panic. I pay without getting a good scolding by my wife. She tells me we are wasting money and why are we eating out and why are we wasting gas money and why and why and why AND WHY! We get back to walking around the neighborhood in complete silence and about a foot apart from each other. It goes without saying the evening isn't going so well. We walk and see the store that I never really paid attention to. "Want to go look in here?" I ask my beloved. "I don't care." sez she. "I'll take that as a yes" I instantly felt comfortable in the location when the first thing I notice is a several shelves full of great American directors. Practically all my favorites were around. All I wanted was a John Carpenter and a Tinto Brass section and there they were in the store. Everything is organized incredibly neatly and made for cinephiles who can't control their spending cash. Plus to add to the fun, not a single iota of pretentiousness. Sure, Godard's cinema is reeked in pseudo-intellectualism and may qualify for a bit of pretentiousness, but the fact this store is drenched in Francophilia and in particular Godard and it doesn't absorb any of the pretentiousness of his cinema is quite an achievement. It's incredibly humble and it was heartwarming to see Back to the Future playing on the television. My wife who was still angry at the time calms down and sticks to the Doris Day section where she rents on of those (My personal opinion) atrocious Rock Hudson/Doris Day love films. I need some cinema d'arte and decide to take "In the Realm of the Senses". The clerk who rings me up is genuinely sincere and happy unlike that possibly drug induced false happiness you get at a Coldstone's. I don't feel alienated by any obnoxious punk working behind the counter that almost makes me want to punch my fist into their face until it caves it and leaves their face looking like mashed potatoes drenched in ketchup. Instead, the clerk is talking to me and my old lady about how much she loves Doris Day. She truly was a sweety pie. We go home and the whole ride back is still incredibly quiet. Aside from the occasional noise of one of us clearing our throats or my wife having a minor sneezing fit followed by my "Bless you" and her "Thank you" after each sneeze, all you could here was Mingus Ah Um being played at a fairly low volume. I specifically remembered being on the 101 right pat Glendale when "Fables of Faubus" started playing. At home, she puts down her stuff and without a pause or a moment to break she apologizes, but still says I was at fault for being so irresponsible with money. I tell her as soon as my work picks up, I can afford to eat decently and we don't need to live in a studio apartment in Reseda, but she says she doesn't want to talk about it at just this moment and just wants to eat some ice cream and watch a movie. Being the sweetheart of all sweethearts that she is, she says she wants to watch "In the Realm of the Sense" first. It ended up being a perfect watch as the films dominate theme of a female's obsessive sexuality portrayed in a non-negative light seemed to work for her. She didn't get in the mood for some hot-and-heavy action, but it did provoke an interesting conversation about psycho-sexuality between us and was a perfect way to end the evening. read more

Up until today, I had been supporting this business for years, although some members of the staff including the owner, Mark, can be quite rude, impersonal, unhelpful and unapologetic. Mark is also not able to hear critiques or as he stated complaints about his store or staff in a constructive manner. Its really sad and as a result I will not be supporting an owner who feels he can hang up in one's face without so much as an apology even when he failed to listen and who obviously fails to appreciate and respect the very customers regardless of race, gender, creed or color who have made his business a success. Business 101, without customers and referrals from those customers you have no business and to be quite honest with you, you can now find every DVD movie title Mark has or does not have online at a cheaper price and save yourself the hassle of parking and the drive. read more

it was okay. i like the selection but they sorta have too much you know what i mean? they had wierd indie movies that i never heard of. they had no copies of there will be blood and i was soooooo dissapointed. i wanted to see it soo bad. but blockbuster had it luckily 4/19/08 !!!UPDATE!!! SO I CAME BACK WITH my friend and wanted to rent juno (ugh! ellen page! how i love you!! lol!) and they had this movie and they had a lot of them too it was just so awesome. the employees were very very nice too not snobbish or anything but just regular nice people. on my second visit they hadd sooooo many movies! i love it very very much! read more

I always want to watch Horror movies and this is the great place to visit with for amazing horror movie collections. And all movies really scares me out especially the foreign one. It took some commitment in time and effort to go pick up a movie. The experience of walking around the store to look at the titles, read the back covers, talk to store employees and even other customers about movies they liked. 30 years from now we'll be watching videos of how we used to actually go to grocery stores to buy food and reminiscing of the good old days, you wait and see. In terms of their actual offerings, they have a lot of used vinyl, some of it is very rare. So, if you're looking for that really special something, you may very well be able to find it at this shop. In terms of their pricing, it's all very reasonable. Even the rare vintage vinyl they offer is priced very competitively in correlation with the modern market. This is the same with their new vinyl, their prices are very competitive. They also offer a few other items like some cassette tape and things like that. Thus, it is your one stop shop for when you want to grab that special piece of music. The staff here are all really nice. So if you need any help, they'll be happy to help you out. Overall, this is one of those dying breeds of shops, one that offers a grand selection of vinyl. I ended up copping the 75th Anniversary Sailor Moon vinyl for wifey since it was a record she had been chasing and one we do not see in the wild often. Unfortunately, the selection felt pretty limited and not fully stocked, so there wasn't much to dig through this time. Cool shop overall, just not the vibe for me on this day.
