Vien Dong Restaurant is a long time family-owned, small business Vietnamese that was established in 1989 in Tacoma. It has been YEARS since the last time I stepped foot inside of this establishment. Once we arrived, we were welcome to sit at any empty table of our choosing. The menu is massive, borderline overwhelming if you don't know what you want. I frequent Vietnamese restaurants regularly and decided to go for a rice entree this time around. I ordered the Cơm Gà Rôti (roasted half chicken with steamed rice), which was also served with a side of lettuce, pickled carrots and cucumbers. The food was good, but my chicken was cooked a little too long in some parts and appeared to be more burnt than normal. The dish was served with plenty of rice. A cold, winter night calls for some good pho. Unfortunately I left a little too late to try a different pho shop but Vien Dong is open until 9 pm. This isn't my first time at this store and I consider this a decent spot to have pho. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The first thing you notice is a sour, musty smell when you walk into the restaurant. It's not the typical pho smell.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm not one to really judge a book by its cover. I sat down at a table, ordered the fried egg rolls and steak and brisket pho. The egg rolls came out first. They were a dark brown color instead of the light golden brown. I tried a bite and it was really greasy and unappetizing. Not too long after the egg rolls came out, the pho was served. Usually I take some time to put together my pho. Add the bean sprouts, take out the white onions, rip off the basil, make my sauce on the side to dip my meat. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I notice a bug on the edge of the table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My husband was with me and I looked at him to see if he saw the same thing. Apparently he didn't see what I saw so I took a napkin and took care of it. At this point, I had only taken one bite of the egg roll and really didn't know if we should continue or leave. My husband flagged a server to take away the napkin. The cockroach was still alive under the napkin and the server discreetly took it away. No words or anything. He just provided the extra napkins my husband requested. We quickly just finished our meals to get out of there. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. Before this event, I was recommending this place as decent pho in Tacoma. I guess my search will continue for good pho in the Tacoma area. read more

Do not eat at this place. Went with my coworker during lunch to our regular spot but they were closed so we decided to try this place. The pho broth was absolutely delicious and the noodles' texture was slightly firm (not overcooked or hard) with high quality brisket, meatballs, tendon and tripe. I visited family in August of 2025...my nephew got married; before flying back to LA my daughter wanted to try pho (she has her favorite pho spot in DTLA and she wanted to compare) out in Tacoma. My nephew guided us along and boom! The local spot for pho, Vien Dong! My daughter order plain pho, my nephew and I went with the beef pho. Let me just say...extremely satisfied with the broth! It just had great flavor! And my daughter agreed! The moment her and I tasted the broth we both looked at each other and kinda did that look like "oh shit, this is better than the pho back home" without having to say it. We all know pho is all about the broth and this, mi gente, does NOT disappoint. No wonder my nephew and his girl go there so much. Went here based on good reviews. We were basically ignored from the minute we walked in, waitstaff helping other people, walking past us, table busser walked past us. Some other waitstaff finally came and sat us. We ordered before another couple of tables but they all got their food first. Waitstaff eventually told us they forgot about us! Coffee was cold.
