Surprisingly spacious and nicely decorated Vietnamese-Thai spot close to the Tacoma Armory and Bates Technical College, sandwiched amongst other Vietnamese spots, a Caribbean clothing spot (I think), and the bonds bailsmen that always locate next to any courthouses (which are also nearby). It's not on Google Maps or Waze. My companion just knew the name had two short syllables and we drove down 11th until we happened to see it off to the side. There is a tiny parking lot next to and street parking. When we went in at exactly lunchtime there was one person eating and...and that is it. The staff was nowhere in sight, which is fine, we called out, and they came out, very pleasant, efficient, fast, and friendly. The menu is extensive. We both ordered curry. I got the Viet Curry with tofu (it's an orangey-yellow curry) and my companion got Panang Curry with beef (it looked really authentic with lovely slices of eggplant). We also got the green tea. Oh the horror! After realizing that Quickie Too was only serving breakfast (actually Sunday jazz brunch, but we'd already had breakfast) a friend suggested this place. I will eventually forgive her, but not for a while...everything about our visit was wretched. The server (brand-new, untrained, nervous, poor kid) was very slow and awkward, and we tried to be patient with him as it was his first day but he really was rough. We waited 15 minutes to have our order taken, 10 minutes to receive our appetizers (which were wrong) and then another 15 to receive our food. The restaurant was virtually empty (6 other diners) and it was mid-afternoon on a Sunday. When our food finally arrived it was nearly inedible. Greasy, flavorless noodles, lukewarm pho, Indonesian beef that was heavy on the vegetables but light on the beef and again, devoid of flavor. As a final nail in this coffin of food death, when we went to pay our bill, cashier was rude and short with us. Love and a clean and well-lit dining room with a comfortable feel and this place has it in spades. We tried some phad see-iew, spring rolls, and viet curry. The Roasted Chicken Pho is now bone-in and you get VERY little chicken meat, and this time it came with NO hoisin or spicy sauces....The pineapple fried rice was like white rice with some yellow food coloring and about 4 individual peas, the weird cheery thing I came across may have been the only piece of "pineapple" in it. A modest family owned Vietnamese eatery that includes some Chinese and Korean specialties. My first visit was for Brisket Pho, Satay Chicken and Fresh Rolls with shrimp and pork. All were flavorfull and satisfying. I like that the chicken breast Satay chicken had two sauces on the side - the chicken was tender and perfectly cooked. I actually happened in by mistake. Thought I was going. To Pho King (cmon gotta love the phonetics of that name), because I had been there before and liked it. Driving by, Just saw the "Pho," sign and thought I was there. Once standing out front, I figured what the heck. Went in, was a Thursday afternoon and was the only one there, in a VERY large dining room. Place was very clean but a little more cafeteria style than I prefer. Just some dividers to break up the room would REALLY help. Ordered my usual "Bun," (vermicelli bowl with pork and egg roll). Nicely presented with the chopsticks and silverware. I prefer to use the chopsticks for most of the bowl cuz it keeps me from pigging out and eating too fast. Good thing, cuz this was a very good effort. Very fresh and well proportioned. Egg rolls were smaller and slightly thicker wraps helped them stand up to the liquid and not get mushy. They were also cut into nice bite size pieces. Not a huge portion but not a huge price either. A perfectly satisfying quantity. Bathroom was immaculate, thank you, service prompt and friendly. Waitress came by to check, always appreciated. Welp, maybe I'll eventually be able to forgive myself for leaving a very busy Pho King to come here and try this restaurant for the first time but it'll take awhile. The two stars are for the attentive service we received from the hostess but I'd give the food an emphatic zero. I wouldn't wish this level of blandness on my worst enemy (actually, I probably would). My boyfriend and I came in to get pho as they advertise it in large letters on their signage but there's only about 4-5 different pho choices on the entire menu. We ordered the Golden Cashew and Indonesian Stir-Fry instead. It's a weird hodgepodge of items on the menu ranging from Korean food (bulgogi), Indian curry (that had no real description), pho, both Chinese and Indonesian stir fry (again, the descriptions were very vague) and Thai food, which takes up a majority of the menu. I feel like they'd do better if they just focused on a couple different regions rather than trying to cover them all, but I digress. The vegetarian egg rolls and the sauce that comes with were decent. Our food came out quickly after, which was great as we were pretty hungry, but we both quickly noticed how average everything tasted. The rice was a little gummy and overcooked and the vegetables looked/tasted as if they came out of a freezer package. There was no spice or complexity to the sauces at all and they honestly tasted the exact same. Both of us barely made it halfway through the food before giving up. The entrees, even for lunchtime, were quite overpriced as well, unfortunately. It was 2 in the afternoon on a Friday afternoon, so not super busy but it was so awkwardly quiet in there that you could hear a pin drop. What an awful service experience. What was going on here? I was in the mood for Pho last Sunday. It was cold and rainy, perfect for just such a thing. I walked into Le-Le's, careful to watch what their hours were on a Sunday night. The sign on the door said that they were open until 9. I had forty-five minutes to kill before they closed. At the front of the restaurant they had the sign of "Please Wait To Be Seated". I waited for about three to five minutes for someone to come. No one did. In the back I saw a lady at the cash register. She was really busy. She was finishing a "To Go" order and racing around. I went up to her and asked that I would like to be seated. She had a very thick accent but it was apparent that she did not want to seat me. She said it would be half an hour before I could get served and pointed to two other tables with diners that looked like they already had to wait a long time to even order. One lady looked really pissed off. The girl behind the counter then said that they were closing. Huh? I said that I would come back another time but it really was a lie. According to other people's reviews Le-Le's seems pretty good and it was apparent that I caught them"off guard". Still whether you are having a bad night or not it gives a business little justification to turn customers away, even if it is forty-five minutes before closing time. On my way out some of their other tables had heaps of dirty dishes laying on them. Indeed a rough night at Le-Le's. I looked a second time at their sign on the door where the hours were posted and it still said they were open until 9 pm everyday. My motivation to come back and eat here has completely vanished, there are plenty of Pho places in town. read more

Fortunately, with a recent expansion Le-Le now covers twice the area it did before and I'm no longer worried about grabbing a table when I visit. So I'll let you in on the secret... Le-Le serves delicious, affordable Vietnamese food in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma. Don't let the neighborhood or the appearance fool you - I've been eating at Le-Le for years and enjoyed every minute of it, death -free. On the extensive menu you'll find a myriad of noodle dishes (pan fried, soup, pho, and more), curries, seafood, and a mixture of everything in between. I always order an appetizer of garden rolls - substantial rolls of rice paper filled with rice noodles, lettuce, herbs, bean sprouts, pork, and shrimp with a side of peanut sauce (vegetarian options are also available and equally yummy). The rolls themselves could also comprise a light meal. If I'm particularly hungry I'll pick between the pho and curries. Le-Le's small pho is enough for me and then some with a clear, meaty broth stocked with rice noodles, rare slices of meat, scallion and onion with a plate of bean sprouts, basil, lime and pepper to garnish to taste. There are a few different curries to choose from - red, green, and panang curries are all so delicious and creamy I'm always hard-pressed to choose. I might wish for a few more vegetables thrown in but the servings are always more than ample for dinner and lunch the next day. Having settled on my favorite dishes at Le-Le I have to admit I have yet to branch out to the rest of the menu. I've dined with many different people here over the years, though, and have yet to hear of a bad dish. Once you place your order service is quick, although the servers are not over-attentive - you'll probably find yourself asking for a water refill or a check but it's never trouble to flag someone down to help. Le-Le is great for big groups and though you won't have to vie for a table with the additional space, take-out is also available. During my last year in Tacoma I used this service weekly and seriously long for the convenience and deliciousness of Le-Le's now, living more than a few thousand miles away. read more
