Vietnam Lovely Noodle is a quaint family run restaurant serving atypical Vietnamese pan-Asian cuisine. Decent food, great value for money in the Annex neighbourhood. The staff are nice people and very attentive here. They immediately gave us complementary shrimp chips at the table which I thought was a great bonus. Most other restaurants would charge you for an appetizer order of shrimp chips. An extra star granted for this gesture. Bonus tip: Pay with cash over $17 and get your choice of one complementary coffee or dessert ice cream or pumpkin pie (Chinese style mochi pancake with red bean paste filling - 南瓜饼). Our order of Vietnamese spring rolls (made pork and shrimp filling) was not the typical crunchy, crispy Vietnamese spring rolls that most other Vietnamese restaurants would offer. It was 6 long cigar-shaped spring rolls in egg roll wrappers and came with a side garnish of pickled vegetables, tomato and cucumber. Not what we expected but tasty nonetheless. It's worth noting that this restaurant will thoughtfully give you a glass of ice in which to pour your beverage. I ordered a Coke to drink and they give the entire can of soda when you order a pop, not a diluted watery fountain drink. This was refreshing. The order arrived quickly. It was a House special noodle soup which came in 2 sizes, small or large. I ordered the large size and the bowl was huge. Their portions are good sized here and larger than other comparable restaurants. The broth was a nice light tasting broth and it did not seem overly heavy. There were ample sauces available to add to the soup if you wanted to amp up the flavour. For dessert the Homemade Pumpkin Pie - 南瓜饼 - was a Chinese style mochi pancake with red bean paste filling. We were able to watch the olympics during our meal! Our server was very nice and offered to sweeten our coffee if we felt it needed to be sweeter. The name suggests this is a Vietnamese restaurant, but it is not. We ordered four vietnamese dishes, and only one of the four was somewhat decent. The House Special Pho comes with a few cuts of meats and not enough flavor. With it, we got one lonely stem of basil (nothing else). My Bun Bo Hue was the most disappointing. It has the same meat as the Pho. The raw meat was clearly frozen as it took a full minute in hot broth before cooking. The meat has a strange after taste I couldn't get rid of... we also ordered Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio, which had way too much noodle. I didn't try other Thai or Chinese dishes. read more

Tonight we decided to try a Vietnamese place located on Bloor Street, Vietnam Lovely Noodle. Located on the north side of the street just east of Dalton Road the place is one of those places you pass every day without ever noticing the menu. Because it advertises as a noodle place and I am not a noodle person I always assumed it was just another place for the suburban or student crowd, however while looking online tonight I was intrigued by the diversity of their menu. The place is long and narrow with a couple of tables facing south to Bloor Street, a couple of separated booths along the western wall and a few tables in the back. The kitchen is then located at the back of the restaurant. I opted for a few of their shrimp skewers while my friend had a few of the lamb skewers, which came with a spicy peanut sauce and a small pickled salad. The grilled skewers were good but were not as good as the entrees. I had their shrimp curry with rotis, while my friend had their beef and rice. Not only were the portions larger than expected, the food was delicious with just the right amount of flavour and spice. While rotis are uncommon in a Vietnamese place, they do have a small South East Asian section which probably explains why they are on the menu, and I was grateful to have them. Love the veggie pho here! For the small bowl, it came packed with a variety of vegetables from broccoli, carrots, cabbage, green pepper, green onion, tofu, and mushroom! The soup base was a choice between beef or chicken and I chose the beef one. It tasted very good, no msg, and awesome to warm you up on a freezing cold day. I fell in love with the soup so much that I had to get a second filling, which to my surprise came for free at no additional charge! The pho itself was pretty regular but with the soup and the veggies, it did its job at filling up my hunger. The dish also came with the bean sprouts, mint, and a slice of lime on the side. Enter: Vietnam Lovely Noodle. I'd seem them appear on searches on Doordash and Yelp! when looking for Vietnamese but had never tried them until today. At first I was blind, but now I see. Or taste. Whatever. The noodles are indeed lovely. They looked like they'd stay clumped and have to be torn apart but the instant they met broth they melted right in. Perfectly cooked and a huge amount of them too. So far so good. I got a Doordash special (20% off if order is over $12) and it was a steal. Soup (large), spring rolls and a ginger ale for $14.90 or so. The options for beef were cooked, uncooked or Ketchup brisket. I didn't think there'd be actual Ketchup on it but there was which was something I'd never seem at a Vietnamese restaurant. I trusted the process and verdict? DELICIOUS. Okay, I'd most likely just get the cooked beef next time, but still, it was very good. The beef was giant chunks like beef stew style. Tasty stuff. But this broth is the real showstopper. My God is it good. No, it's GRRRRRRREEEEAAAT! OK, couldn't resist that but really, I think it may be the best broth in the city (apologies to Pho Tien Thanh who owns that title) but this broth is very very very good. It was so good, that when the ketchup turned it bright red it still tasted like sweet pho goodness. Nothing could stop it. Anyhow, I'm impressed. I'll order again. And again. There wasn't anyone inside when I got there (around 11PM), but even if it was full there is plenty of seating to be had. The decor is more modern and trendy than most Pho places, but some of the tables are cramped. There were a lot of items on the menu but my mind was only focused on one thing: Pho. I got the special house noodle soup, but you can also build your own bowl (same option for Vermicelli) and there's tons of other Viet-Thai and SEA options. The bowl it came out on was absolutely massive with a lot of noodles and meats. It looked amazing, but once I dug in I realize the taste didn't live up to the visual feast for eyes. It was kind of bland so I had to make up for it with a lot of siracha/hoisin sauce and the beef cuts weren't the highest quality. The tripe and meatballs tasted fine. The broth wasn't exactly flavorful and was the most disappointing aspect. Well since I was hungry and it was late I managed to easily finish the whole thing. Do I recommend it? I like to say I know my Pho and there are much better places around in the city. The service was also eh... the waitress did not look like she wanted to be there at all. Not a bad choice if you're looking for comfort noodles (and rice) near the UofT campus. The atmosphere is nicer than most traditional Vietnamese restaurants and the service is good. I've been here twice, the first time I tried the Laksa noodles and I really enjoyed them. Plenty of chicken, tofu, and veggies + great soup. I tried the bbq chicken on rice during my second visit and the chicken was well-flavoured and cooked nicely. If the rice cake with Vietnamese sides such as egg cake and shredded pork (that you find at more traditional Vietnamese restaurants) it would be perfect. I'm always in search of new noodle soup places to try and this is a nice welcome to the Annex. Ordered the Penang laksa (large): the broth was flavourful but mildly spiced, chicken, rice noodle, sprouts & tofu puffs were fine. Thankfully someone had the foresight to place not just the squeeze bottle of hot sauce but also the chili paste with a layer of hot oil at the tables; those are the best. I put 2 heaping spoons & it added the right amount of heat to my laksa. Overall it was okay and satisfying. I've had better but definitely sated my hunger. I used to go here maybe once a month. The pho is decent. But today I was there with my daughter, who ordered spring rolls. They brought out fresh rolls instead. She isn't one to complain, and I didn't hear what she ordered, so she just started eating them despite the fact they were not what she ordered. A few minutes later the server comes by and says that there had been a mistake, and immediately tables a plate of the spring rolls. Informs us that the extra order was no charge. Ok, no big deal. It happens. A few minutes after that, the server comes back and asks me to pay for half the mistaken order. Pork was very tender and delicious, but it could have used more seasoning, it didn't have a strong bar-b-q taste, but was still very good. The fried spring rolls were also yummy. We had an order of the normal shrimp/pork spring rolls (not the beep fried ones) and they were great. Lots of noodles with two shrimp, greens, and a little pork per roll. We also had the pho with raw and cooked beef. The broth was pretty good, but not amazing. The meat and noodles were all very good. Finally, one of the kids had the pad thai. They were pretty good, but nothing close to the traditional dish, not that I would expect to get that from a Vietnamese place. Seems like the noodles they used were some type of fettuccine noodle from Walmart and not vermicelli rice noodles. Weird huge slices of carrots and salad that they put ON TOP of the soup, which gets soggy. No green onions, sliced onion or cilantro. The satay broth was not spicy at all and tasted like slimy fish unfortunately. I got the cooked beef and it tasted like they went and picked up a pre-cooked roast at superstore that's been sitting under the hot lamp all day. The spring rolls weren't even spring rolls they didn't use spring roll wrappers instead they must've ran out and used rice paper that were burnt to a crisp and all I could taste was fried oil. Overlooked this place for literally 8 years for no obvious reason but finally pulled the trigger yesterday and man, the noodle soups were both delicious. We tried the Laksa and the Tom Yum broth - both spicy in the "flavourful" way and distinctly good, all the ingredients were fresh, and I recommend adding glass noodles if you're into those - they were a nice touch. Portions in a "large" are big - I only made it through half of mine. Super cheap - a meal for two (both large size, with "added" ingredients to the soups and with sodas) was 30 bucks after tax, and super friendly - our server was quick and cheerful. I really liked my soup but it was a fairly large portion so I took it to go. A bit spicy, but full of flavour. Also lots of veggies. They informed us when we arrived that the credit card machine is down. But by the end of our meal they seemed to have the issue resolved so we were able to pay without cash.
