Would the real Vikings eat here? Yeah I think so. Pretty much as expected. Full of locals. Good solid diner food. Had to get the Larryburger since I enjoy onions. It was super. The fries were pretty ordinary but not a throw away. I ate them all. Definitely worth the short drive off the freeway. It's quick, cheap and very local. The Nordic atmosphere is real homey! This is the quintessential small town MN café. The breakfasts looked amazing, and the buffet ham is fantastic. It isn't a fancy place, it isn't glamorous. Always great food and service fun place to take family when they come to visit

I have had the Viking a few times In the past year and every time it has been one the the best meals I have had. With a choice of a 1/3 or a 1/4 pound burger you can be sure to get what you paid for, an amazing burger with awesome sides like fries. And if you are talking French Fries, they have ,my favorite fries in town. if you order to go or eat in the staff if friendly when you meet them and for a place that can get as busy as it it, I usually only have to wait 10-15 min for fresh amazing food. The longest I have ever waited was during the busiest I have ever seen them and that was only 25 min. So my honest opinion is that I would 10/10 go there again especially for breakfast and lunch. And they have been open for 50+ years family owned so they must be doing something right? The inside is also decorated nicely with statues and painting of Vikings and has the effect of an old diner with a great esthetic pleasure. We arrived for dinner and had a wonderful experience. The soup was excellently homemade beef, vegetable and dumplings. Burgers, BLT and desserts were all quality food. The server was thoughtful making our meal a nice break in our road trip. Stop in and enjoy the Viking. read more

1st time trying Viking cafe, food was amazing. Service was a tad bit slow but, the food made up it!

Everyone always talks about this place, but we always have rude servers. Just throws the water glasses and silverware down on the table and walks away. The hash browns have been burnt the last two times we've been here. Never really impressed with the atmosphere or food. read more

This restaurant used to be great. The last few visits however yielded sub standard food. I ordered sausage gravy and biscuits that had under cooked sausage. I received pancakes that were doughy and flavorless. At the last visit I had the lunch buffet the giant meat balls were over cooked dry and had no flavor. The rest of the food on the buffet was so-so. If you like large portions of barely mediocre food this is the place. The best thing about this place is the coffee. read more

Went here for lunch with a friend on a Saturday. Not many customers. The place is all booths, and neither the benches nor tables move, so it's awkward to squeeze in and out. The restrooms are down a very steep flight of stairs, so no handicap access. I guess that's why this place looks so tired and old; if they remodeled, they'd have to put in an elevator. I ordered a grilled cheese and fries. Basically Wonder Bread and one slice of Kraft American cheese. The fries could have been left in the fryer a little longer. My friend ordered a cheese burger, and she had no complaints. The soda and iced tea are served in tiny glasses. A small is about 8 ounces for $1.25 and a large looked to be about 12 ounces for $1.50. The menu stressed that one refill is free. Since the glasses were completely filled with crushed ice before the beverage was added, we maybe got a third or half a glass. When my friend accidentally knocked over her just-filled refill, a server was there immediately to clean it up and gave her another full glass free, which was nice. There were about four employees we saw, who were all constantly busy cleaning and refilling salt/pepper and sugar containers. They were all friendly and pleasant. I don't think I'll be back. Too bad, because these little hole-in-the-wall places in smaller towns usually have really good food. I just didn't get that at the Viking Cafe. read more

Lately some improvements in attitudes have been evident here. And I need to mention that if your there on a day when the hash browns are good, you will never be the same again. They are simply the best served anywhere, great to go with breakfast. This place is mostly all about breakfast, many of the things are good. Highest praise for Pancakes, caramel rolls and the hash browns. Like a previous reviewer wrote, it just screams we don't want or care about your 5 stars, we are what we are and always have been. Five yrs ago I would have said go here if you're looking for breakfast. However, the food and service has declined in recent years. They keep the place the same in appearance. Menu seems unchanged as well. It's the quality that's disappointing - every time! Luke warm breakfast food at best, dishwater coffee. Lunch food, also nothing to write home about anymore. read more

Worst restaurant experience ever. I wasn't fond of our waitress swearing around my child. The cappuccino was some sort of funny hot chocolate. I ate only a few bites of my meal because it tasted so awful. My wife was able to eat a small portion of her meal before she gave up. When customers came in, the waiter and waitress would play Rock Paper Scissors to see who would have to help them. Of my $9 meal, I was able to drink the water. read more

You'll feel like you're in Lake Wobegone, if you stop in here! It really should be a national historic landmark, IMO. Breakfasts are satisfying in a way only golden hash browns with butter on top can make them. Outstanding bacon and ham also. The rest of the day's menu is not so stellar, but still good, and not expensive. Soups can be good, all homemade. Salads are not for the gentrified. The pies are not all that great, but the coffee is fresh and hot , bottomless and cheap. Cream in little pitchers. At busy times, there is a designated coffee refill waitress . Milkshakes come with the metal container. Also, if you should need to find a plumber or electrician, here's the place they congregate! All in all, a wonderful, happy place, with aerobic waitresses and lots of city parking out back. Counter and booths, one big table in back. Bathrooms are downstairs, no handicap access. read more

we had a good lunch experience here! can be awkward for larger groups as the booths are small and not so comfortable but that part of the charm. the food was good diner food with a good diner menu. prices were great for the amount of food we received and service was prompt and friendly. read more

our new favorite place in fergus to eat a real down home cooking kinda place. we love the hot beef, pork & turkey with regular mashed potatoes not those gross garlic ones some places serve and regular bread not that weird kind which a lot of places serve now. excelent gravey not to salty and all come with dressing which you don't find often. the homemade dumpling & tomato soup was awsome and you just don't see them on many menu's. the hashbrowns were great firm and not mushey & over cooked. see ya next summer again when at the lake. joan l. read more
