We have bought wood from Viking for over 30years. We are true DIY home owners and I used to believe this was the place to buy cedar wood. But this last batch we received from them was what I consider subpar. There were many split boards and probably half of the wood planks were what I consider prime grade wood we paid for, the other half not so much. We also had them cut the wood to length for our project to help with time. Oh my. There were several pieces that the cut was not even close to straight. We had to recut to straighten. Many pieces were damaged by the binding they used to transport the planks. Very disappointed. Consequently we had to rethink our design to maximize the usable wood. It turned out ok but we had a lot of waste due to these issues. read more

Dan provided the original estimate, and due to delays getting my neighbor's approval with it, the work was started a few weeks after originally planned. Dan was very flexible and understood the need to postpone. Due to the fluctuating prices of lumber, the delay caused a small increase in the price. Yes! There is still somebody who knows chain link fence! I've wanted a matching gate put in my fence for decades now, and finally got exactly what I wanted. Jesse from Viking Fence, Austin, listened to me carefully and designed my gate. And listened when I changed my mind (decided I wanted a double gate), and he designed again. And when I got my ideas settled, he got my gate custom-made. The team who did the job was efficient and neat, and careful around the flowers growing very close to the fence. And cleaned up so you couldn't tell they'd been there. And when I wasn't happy with the posts the team installed -- (with a lot of difficulty, in solid rock)! -- Jesse came over with tools to make the posts look great. The new gate blends in with the 64-old chain link fence. And yes, some of still like to talk over the fence, or look through it at each-others' gardens. And now I can go from my front yard to the backyard without going all around the house! Heck, I can drive a car through that gate; it's 8 feet wide. read more

In the first year and a half, I had extensive problems with a sagging gate that would not open or close properly. Viking Fence came out a few times to adjust the gate to get it working again, but over time they were slower and slower to respond and eventually just stopped returning my calls. This was very frustrating. Recently, I was fortunate to get in touch with new management. Communication is much smoother now, and they sent a team to adjust the gate again. For the moment, it is working. It is unclear whether the underlying issue is resolved (most likely, the gate posts are not set deeply and solidly enough to support the weight of the gate), but the new management says that they are committed to finding a permanent fix. Additional info: Not only did they not complete the project properly, they promised to fix it but then stopped communication once they charged my card for the balance (so just buying time until the charge cleared). Truly egregious behavior from a business and luckily I had the forethought of recording (video/audio) our conversations once the project went south. Now I'm going to have to contract with another company to fix their errors and will send them the bill. They put in our fence 15 years ago. Needed part of the fence straitened because it was leaning due to a flood in our lot. I called Danny in the small repair group to have it done. We had 2 sections of fence replaced. The fence was damaged by high wIndy's and the posts broke at the base (there might have been some water damage to one of the posts also, contributing to the weakness). Danny and Ed did a great job. it was finished quickly, and it looks great. Eight years ago, Viking Fence replaced my entire cedar fence. Due to a combination of shoddy materials and installation technique, most of the posts are already completely rotted through to the point of failure. Sections are sagging, and strong winds this week blew down another section. As you prepare to spend $20 or more per lineal foot on a fence, bear in mind that your Viking Fence might very well only last you a paltry 8 years. I never expected to be facing major fence repairs or replacement this soon. I strongly recommend finding a better quality vendor that will use quality lumber (like treated posts) and install the fence correctly to minimize rot. read more

Highly Recommend! Viking Fence installed 5 security gates and some metal fencing around our condo complex near the University. I worked with Brian and Jesse. The gates are top notch, very stable and durable. The gates and fencing look beautiful and sturdy. There is a lateral header bar (hope I described that correctly) running over the top of the gates to make them more sturdy/durable. They also replaced some concrete/brick columns in front of our complex that were leaning, which looks really nice - better than I expected. The finished work was really nice, but I was equally impressed with my working relationship with Jesse and Brian. They were very concerned that we were happy and fully addressed any questions and concerns we had quickly. There was a sprinkler line manifold that was leaking and I'm not sure they actually caused it, but they went out of their way to fix it better than it was before - this was an actual complex manifold that was completely rebuilt. When the project was complete, they both met me in person to walk the area and make sure we were happy. I was impressed with the quality of the fencing/gates and excellent communication from both Jesse and Brian, I have not found it common that contractors try so hard to make sure you are happy and that you feel like they really have your back. I can tell they take a lot of pride in their work and they have a LOT of experience doing these things and know how to do it right. I will go so far as to call them "craftsmen." After a storm some years back, my fence took some damage. Checking around there were a few choices, so I had Viking do my fence. The first impression was very good and professional. They walked my yard and did the measurements. We discussed the type of fence and material. I mentioned at least twice that being on the west side of Route 35, my ground only goes down a foot before you will hit rock. Yeah, yeah, they know this. A couple days later, I had my quote and schedule the install. Once I had the date, I walked around to my neighbors to tell them the date and please keep their pets inside that day. All agreed and asked me if I wanted them to chip in for their portion. No, I got that covered. I came home from work to see the new fence, nope, not even started. The note on my door said they couldn't do it because there were dogs in the neighbor's yard. So schedule a second date, same scenario. Third date, again the same. So I took a day off for the fourth date. Finally they started the fence. When they finished and I got the bill, it was $500.00 more than the quote. I called to find out why the extra charge. They told me it was because they needed to bring in special equipment because there was rock where they needed to put a fence post. Oh, really, I told you guys that so why didn't you figure that into the quote. A month later, I noticed the corner was coming undone. Called them to come back to fix it and got a sorry, we don't warranty that. Really, so I fixed it myself. They used nailed instead of wood screws, so I did it the right way and used screws. read more

He finally calls back hours later to reschedule with a lame excuse about being on another job, and still manages to show up two hours late for the rescheduled appointment. But to make it all the worse waste of my time, he can not even be bothered to submit a proposal to me. read more

This company was contracted out by my neighbor in Pemberton Heights to replace about 6-8 4x4 cedar fence posts. Because of the orientation of the fence, they did all the work on my property. When they were done, they left all of the busted concrete from the old posts on my property haphazardly thrown around, tons of concrete wash in my flower beds where they cleaned their tools and buckets, concrete all over my internal fence where they washed their tools, leftover concrete bags and other trash, etc. In addition, they used my water and failed to rehook up my sprinkler system - I was out of town for 2 weeks while this was going on and all my grass in the back yard died. I guess I should be happy they at least took the old fence posts. Beyond that, upon talking with my neighbor on this they charged him like a 1000-1500 for this work... they installed 1 fencepost that had a huge crack in it, none of the fence posts were cut off parallel to the ground. some of the posts were cut at almost a 30 degree angle. I couldnt believe how amateur the job was. Overall, it looked like something I could have done by hiring some cheap day labor at Home Depot. Really shoddy job. I'm glad I didnt pay. I'm really not sure how to say it, but f*ck these guys. For who are allegedly supposed to be one of the higher end fence places these guys really suck. Regards. I hope they build fences better than they conduct business renting porta potties. We've rented two from them with twice weekly clean up. On two occasions they have not shown up to clean for weeks despite repeated calls. Billing continued of coarse with no refunds. When clean up did occur the driver would not fix broken toilet seat and would remove trash from the pottie and leave in the parking lot. These guys do a horrible job for a lot of money. We've found a less expensive and more reliable company to service our needs. Give them a chance if you want to get raked over the coals. read more

Just installed 375 linear feet of shadowbox cedar fence in South Austin, and couldn't be more pleased. Originally I wanted one of those sustainable hardwood fences from material like Ipe, and then realized they were shockingly expensive. We got very, very close using #2 grade cedar in narrow, but thick (so they won't twist over time) horizontal slats. I got multiple bids, and Viking wasn't the cheapest, but was very accurate with what it was going to really take, for all the little details...including stainless nails, so they don't rust and stain as the fence wears. All the boards were stained prior to installation and we worked through several test boards to get the color just right. Massively appreciate the professionalism, focus and attention to detail. Jimmy set up the job from the beginning so it would go smoothly. It's quite beautiful, and will last for a very long time. Fernando, Jorge and the rest of his crew were A+, really incredible craftsmen, you could see how well it was built. Simplicity needs great construction because everything shows. We used 2" inch cedar slats, 3/4" apart with posts every 8 feet. Octavio, our construction manager, was an excellent craftsman. He worked hard to ensure we were completely happy, even changing some post locations after we decided the spacing could be improved at the edge of the property. The price was also competitive. I had estimated lumber costs on their own, and it wouldn't have been more cheaper to build myself- even if I had Octavio's skills and wanted to give up a few months worth of weekends. I just remembered to write this review as I'm contacting them to finish out a small section of the side yard we had initially decided to leave open. read more

Extremely unprofessional company.  We were almost run over while we were walking by a company representative.  When we told him he almost hit us, he verbally attacked us and cussed at us in front of an elderly customer he was providing a quote for.  He then made extremely rude comments towards my wife and aggressively turned to walk towards her.  I stepped in front to protect my wife and he assaulted me and tried to provoke me to retaliate and into a confrontation but I refused.  Police were called and a report was made.  We tried to speak to the company but the manager was condescending and told us that he had hired the representative and he had a clean record so that is all that mattered to him.  We later spoke again and he stated that if we wanted to hire an attorney to hire one and then have them contact his company's attorney.    He said the owner of the company would also call us but we never received a call, then later said he was only the messenger and the Owner would not be calling.   WE chose not to pursue criminal charges  against this companies representative even though I received a laceration that required medical attention.  But we also figured  this company would have the decency to take a stand against these kind of actions by its employees,  If you look at the reviews you will notice that Viking's representatives have also almost ran over other people.   Instead of condone violence by its employees.  Not sure why they would tolerate such behavior as they stress they are a family friendly company.  I would not recommend using them or allowing them to be near your loved ones out of safety and concern for how they act in public.  Id figure any person including the owner of this company would do the same and defend their wife from being attacked in such a way read more
