This place is a winner!! We had family in town and wanted something different than seafood so we picked Italian food. We read a few reviews and thought we'd give this place a shot. Glad that we did! Great food served by great people. You know you are in the right place when upon entering one of the servers says " Welcome, this is your first time here isn't it?" Because they obviously are a place of regulars. The food and mood is original Italian. The eggplant would make an Italian grandmother ask for the recipe. This was our second visit and we enjoyed it very much! They were busy on a Friday evening but the service was delightful as was the meal. My husband had the seafood pasta which was chock full of shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops and calamari! He enjoyed it thoroughly and brought half of it home to enjoy again. I ordered the shrimp puttanesca which was delicious and plentiful! My only suggestion would be to use Kalamata olives rather than the black olives. And to be sure the pasta is al dente, very important....mine was slightly overcooked. The ambiance reminds me of my grandparents kitchen, sweet and homey but very loud! It took 1.5 hours to get the food. It was explained that the food is made fresh for each order, my food was cold. The pasta was over cooked, precooked and mushy. They had no soup. It was so noisy I couldn't even hear my friend sitting next to me. I was uncomfortable and left with a headache. Prices were high and did not include a salad. We made reservations for our group and were looking forward to our visit. we stood for a while until seated even though tables were available. Once seated we realized how packed in we would be as the other table filled up and the small room was thunderous with the loud voices bouncing off the cinderblock walls. It was painfully loud. we waited over 1 1/2 hrs for our food, then it trickled out two at a time, some hot some very cold. Once food delivered no more service. Back in their original location, Villa Sorrento is as good or better than they have ever been. When you drive to their restaurant, the area seems a little sketchy, but don't let the area scare you away, because this restaurant is too good to pass up. First, everyone that worked this evening (November 8) was extremely welcoming, gracious, friendly, and professional. They were a happy bunch who were working really well as a team. Now the food: My wife started with a house salad, which she enjoyed. I had the pasta faggioli soup and it was OUTSTANDING- I could have eaten five bowls of it. We were served super delicious bread and oil to dip it in and that was excellent. I ordered the calamari and baby clams with white wine sauce and it was great, lots of flavor, lots of calamari and clams and the pasta was cooked just right. My wife had spaghetti with meat sauce and our server and the manager were definitely concerned with making sure she got what she wanted- which she did, she really enjoyed her dinner. Since we've moved to Palmetto, we've been searching for "our place"- you know, the go to restaurant that you'll visit at least a couple of times a month and get to know the staff and when the kids are hungry, you want to be able to just suggest "our place" and everyone will agree. Well, we found our place! We're so happy to have found Villa Sorrento and we look forward to being regulars for years to come. We have been looking for a good Italian restaurant. We saw Villa Italia and had to try it. The place doesn't have a sign on the building so we had to trust the GPS that we were here. We were the only ones that were there at 5pm. We chose our seat away from where others may sit and checked out the menu. It was next to a plexiglass partition so we could watch them folding pizza boxes and making the dough. They kneaded the dough after removing the ball of dough from a large stainless mixing bowl. They formed the crust. The dough looked soft and billowy and I bet it made a delicious crust. A few people came in for to-go orders and another couple and a single came in for dinner. All the staff wore masks making me feel comfortable about eating there. Our server was very nice. We ordered the Cozze Marinara (mussels in red sauce) for appetizer. They brought bread with a dipping sauce because we would be ordering pasta. The bread was ok but I wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce. The mussels arrived shortly after. They were large and the sauce was not a regular marinara but not fully cooked tomato pieces, parsley and green onions?? I definitely did not care for them. We were not finished with the mussels when the pasta e fagioli (translated pasta and beans) came out. The soup had little pasta in it and little beans and not a tomato or tomato flavor. It had soft bacon floating in it and it was a bit spicy. Once, I removed the bacon and enjoyed the flavor. Our meals came and the lasagna had square cheese somewhat melted on top. It took me back because I expected the dark crispy edges of a good cheese melted on top. It's too bad they use a square cheese and don't broil the top because once you get to the rest of the lasagna, it was quite good. The penne with sauce and meatballs was quite good also. The entrées were the better part of the meal yet not good enough to bring me back here. The veal piccatta was very tasty & delicately prepared. The kind of dish that you want to linger over and enjoy. The service was very personal & quite pleasant. yes, have to mention that the focaccia bread and the dip was perfect. I ordered the grouper piccatta because it sounded "unique" . It was excellent... The pre-meal bread was excellent- hot out of the oven served with a tasty evoo dipping side. The portions were satisfying. Our service was excellent...the staff is tenured and really seemed to care about us as customers. Most of the pasta is not homemade but was good and didn't take away from my meal. I believe the pizza crust is homemade, and there was a swinging door of activity for "take-out"...(a side note), we ordered a pizza from here 2 nights ago- this was after my grouper meal was behind us- It was "incredible"! One ...if not "thee" best pizza since I have moved here. We stopped by tonight for a meal, at this local place, as we've seen a few cars out front, but not always. Inside, it's basic, but nicely done Italian pizzeria style. We had the mussels spaghetti dish meal, a chicken Parmesan, and the appetizer meatballs. And end it off with a cannoli tipped with cherry pieces. Or we can say it was far better than we hoped. Cozy new family owned and run Italian place on the road to Snead Island. The hostess, Tica, greeted us with a smile and seated our party of six immediately. She was also our attentive and friendly server throughout the evening. Everyone in our group was pleased with the food. Shrimp bruschetta and fried calamari appetizers were a hit. We went for dinner with another couple. Not sure why they don't have better advertisement such as a better sign? I had made reservations but when we walked in, we were the only customers in the place. They did have our table set so that was nice. The menu offers quite a variety. The house chianti was descent. We had a party of four Friday night and decided to try Villa Sorento. To our surprise they were not busy at all. Since we have dined here before we were really surprised. The food here is truly Italian. I had the eggplant parm with a side of penne. The eggplant was cooked perfectly, with a really tasty marinara sauce. The rest of our party had spaghetti with meatballs. All agreed way too much food, so we all had take home. Their prices are really reasonable and the service is spot on. We had wanted to try this place out for a while since it is in nearby Palmetto, and I am so glad we did a few days ago. There was a short wait to be seated on a slow weekday evening, but once we were at our table, the service was prompt and friendly. Our server was very knowledgeble about the items on the menu. I had the manicotti dinner with soup and my companion enjoyed the pasta marsala with added shrimp. Both delicious, and the garlic bread was great! They do not have a liquor license yet, but will serve a complimentary glass of red or white wine if asked, and they say you can bring your own bottle with no cork fee.
