I have two boys who play for Lakewood Village. My oldest is 8 and my youngest is 6. We've been playing at Lakewood Village since my 8-year-old was 4 and we couldn't be happier. We started out with T-ball and most recently played Farm (machine pitch) and Minor B (kid pitch). It's a very community oriented league and what I appreciate most is that it's very positive and encouraging with a fair amount of competitiveness. Sure, it's fun to win games, but I've never seen coaches yelling at kids on the field for missing a ball, etc. The most important message is to have fun while learning to win and lose as a team; an experience that can't be replicated at school. Some teams are even co-ed. The prices are reasonable and we've made a lot of really great family friends through this league. We look forward to spending our Saturdays at Lakewood Village every baseball season. read more

My kids have played at Village from age 5 through 12 and it is a great place to play. It is very family friendly and being a relatively small league as compared to our neighbors and other Little leagues it is fairly competitive, but the stress is more on teaching fundamentals with the thought that there is enough time in the future for these kids stressed out on winning, need to learn to love the game and have fun so you will always be a baseball fan if not a player whenever you can. As with all youth sports programs there is always a little drama, it is like small town politics. Lakewood Village is no exception, but over all it is a great place to play. We have had people come and go as we have had people from neighboring leagues come over and play. Everyone parent has rose colored glasses for the kids and their reasons for doing certain things. Lakewood Village Little League respects that. I personally started off at another league and moved to a Lakewood Village Little League because the league better suited our kid's personality and winning was the end all to be all. Most of the managers at LVLL know that if you teach fundamentals and get the kids who are not as advanced to play better than winning takes care of itself. The better players will always be your better players for all sort of reason such as natural athleticism to trying to keep up with their older siblings, but that doesn't mean the other players are garbage. Every child develops at different ages. I have seen players not remotely considered a "good" player in their early years develop into a player that consistently gets on base and does the little things required in baseball. They might not become big homer hitters although last year I saw that happen for a player that no one thought he could based upon his early years of playing, the bottom line the coaches maintained their interests and fueled their love of the game long enough for their skills to develop. This is the main focus of Lakewood Village Little League. To make more than baseball players but baseball fans for life. Look around, come by the park on a Saturday in March and April and see for yourself or even go by the local high school whose has the reputation and tradition of being a great baseball program and see how many kids on their squad played at Lakewood Village Little League. As for to previous reviewer, Little League does have a minimum play and it is six consecutive outs or two full innings and at least one at bat. Most managers I have observed play kids a minimum of 3 full innings and two at bats. I know this reviewer and his complaint is based upon the fact that he thought his kid should play more than another child, and if that would have happen then maybe that parent complains. I have also seen this previous reviewer coach AYSO Soccer and even though they too have a minimum play, his child never sat out a quarter. And maybe rightfully so, in his eyes his son was too good to sit and he took the time out to coach, so he is not going to sit his son and because he is one of the better players. This is a normal reaction, like I said earlier all parent see their kids through rose color glasses and his kids' baseball manager probably had those same glasses on when it came to the baseball team. All I do know is that it is inevitable that a child whose parent puts in more volunteer hours will probably reap more benefits because none of these youth sports programs are being funded or run by a rich uncle or big corporation. I can't say it doesn't happen at Lakewood Village, but it happens everywhere even to our neighboring East Long beach Pony and Cal Ripken and Heartwell Pony Leagues. The question a parent must ask themselves, is my kid having fun playing the game and is this about my kid having fun and learning or is it about my self indulgence and bruised ego. And the other question would be that the more time you put in as a volunteer that better experience my child will have...in all things. So get up and volunteer and hopefully you will go to Lakewood Village Little League where your child learns to play and loves to play!! That's what my family has done. read more

If you intend to register your child at LVLL, you have to be careful depending on your child's age. You end up spending over $300 for the season. It's great for children who are in Coach Pitch and Farm because for children up to 7 years old, there is much care in teaching them the fundamentals of the game. However, after that age, when they enter Minor B, Minor A and Majors, this becomes a good ol' boys club. Even though all players pay the same amount, if your child does not have the skills that makes him or her a star, they become a way to complete the amount of players needed in the team. What this means is that your player plays only 2 innings on the field, while the coach's son and his preferred players play all 6 innings.That doesn't sound fair when you're player is paying the same amount of money as the rest of the players. Also, if your child is not as good as others, isn't that the purpose of teaching them to get to be better players? This is borne out when you see which players make the All Star Team. Just looking at the photos, you see that all of the coaches' and their assistants' children grace the pictures, along with a few (very few) good players. Sometimes the coach's child is a mediocre player, but he always makes the All Star Team. I would never begrudge a father trying his hardest to make his son or daughter a better baseball player. That is admirable, however, the casualties are those children that were just an adornment or supporting cast in order for that parent to fulfill his goal. Of the coaches that my son has had, only David Baruch has challenged him to become a better player. If you do decide to join LVLL, and your child is of age for those divisions, 8 to 12 years old , try to get him or her in a team that has him as a coach for your child. He challenged my son to become a better baseball player, making him play all the positions, expecting more of him every single game, and making him play at least 4 or 5 innings per game. It's been my experience that the rest just want to boost their ego and want their child to be a star, but since you need 9 players to take the field and maybe 12 to make a team, your child is just a needed necessity that is only window dressing for their team. One last thing: In AYSO, the soccer organization, a coach must have each player play 3 or the 4 quarters of a game. I wish Little League Baseball had a rule like that; that makes a coach play all his players at least 4 out of 6 innings each. read more

In regards to Arturo S. the Lakewood Village Little League is one of the best little leagues around! It is very family oriented league with lots of quality instruction by their coaching staff. If a parent thinks that their son is solely going to be taught by their coaches they are seriously mistaken. Parents need to participate in the growth process as well. What we bring to our league is integrity, teamwork, perseverance, and commitment. You will always have parents who think that their son is the best on the team, but unfortunately that is not always the case. Lakewood Village Little League is a great place for your kid to play baseball and meet new friends. It's all families with children everywhere! So many kids (and parents) end up hanging out and watching other games even when their's is over. That being said, it is a sport and all coaches want to teach the game of baseball but also teach the kids that you earn your position and you earn your playing time. Sports are meant to be competitive. We have been here 4 years and my son wouldn't leave for anything! Great experience for us, but then again my son is athletic and we don't push him to be or do something he isn't capable of. read more

This is the second year my grandson Cameron has played at LVLL. All the players are learning the fundamentals of the game, to work as a team, are honing their baseball skills, are developing admirable sportsmanship to be good losers and gracious winners, but most of all they are having FUN! On the sidelines, the parents, grandparents, and extended family and friends are there to add their support.
