Will not return and give them my business. Went in to seriously buy a bike and saw only one customer and empty but the staff totally ignored us the whole time. When we were about I leave one of the staff was passing by and casually asked if we have been helped. At that point too late and lost our business. Terrible customer service. I bought a Trek here many years ago and have returned for a repair/tune-up and have always been very satisfied with the service and sale. The price for the bike was as good as other local shops and the folks here are definitely into bikes! Many years ago I bought my 15-speed bike from this place and I regularly take it back to get it tuned up. They used to be located on the east side of Rand road in a little strip mall, but they moved to a new, larger facility directly across the street. I came in today to buy some things and was surprised at how they now have anything imaginable for biking including electric-assist bikes, a bike fitting station and a collection of antique bikes belonging to the owner. They may have had some of these things before, but the way the old store was laid out it didn't make it easy to stroll around to look at things. With this new larger store, it's much easier to see everything they have. I also learned they take donations of bikes. They will tune it up and take it to a place in the inner city. I highly recommend you start here if you are looking for anything to do with biking or if you just want to stop in and show your kids the old bikes. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. read more

Village CycleSport excels is providing outstanding customer support at fair prices. Other reviews might have their beefs, but I've been a customer for fifteen years and I leave there every time beyond impressed with their professionalism and love of the industry. The success comes from the people. Preston (one of the managers) runs a great shop. Staff members are attentive, polite, and individually committed to the shop and the sport. I have to give an EXTRA special shout out to the repair shop crew in the back. Time and time again my crazy repair needs have been met with a smile and top quality service. I'm a better bicyclist because my gear is always ready for me when I need it. I've completed over fifteen triathlons and their shop has backed every one of my adventures. My husband and I purchased our bicycles and our youngest son's bicycle from this shop and come in from time to time for an accessory. However, what truly impressed me about Village Cyclesport is their service department, and especially, Mark's attentive service. We purchased my eldest son's e-bike online due to his friend's positive review. After a summer of use, the bike's motor refused to kick in. Mark took a quick look and diagnosed the brake as the cause of the loss of power. He replaced it for a very reasonable fee and, upon a second failure just days before my son's move across country to University, he fixed and tuned the e-bike at no cost with no prior notice that I'd be bringing it back in. Considering the shop doesn't even sell this bike brand, I'm grateful for Mark's understanding of e-bike wiring and his ability to fix the bike so quickly despite my poor choice of buying a bike online rather than from this shop. read more

I had a great experience buying my 9-year old daughter a new bike today from Village Cycle. I considered shopping online, but that would have been a huge mistake because I was going to order a 24 inch frame and she would have quickly outgrown it. When I brought her into Village Cycle, they measured her and realized she's a size adult XS. She loves her new Specialized Myka V 650b and we got a great deal on it. Do they even care about their customers or need our business? It was hard to determine because there was no acknowledgment as I entered the store and waited for several minutes at both the service desk and check out counter. There were two staff members at each location, but neither could be bothered to ask if I needed help or to say that they would be with me shortly. Normally I would have walked out, but I needed a tire tube. When my item was finally rang up, it rang up for more than what was on the price tag. I pointed this out and their response was that the stickers were old. Buyer be aware of this pricing practice. read more

Went in at 12:30 on a Wednesday in July - no cars in the parking lot - wondered if it was closed. There were 4 people clustered around the cash register desk. I wasn't acknowledged at all. I searched for my item, noticing that most of the accessory merchandise had been there awhile- faded price tags, etc. I came up to the register to pay and the 4 people didn't seem interested in moving out of the way for me to put my credit card in the reader. I try to support local businesses, but this one has drastically gone downhill from what it was 6 - 10 years ago. Then I came home and looked up my purchased item online - i had paid more than 200% over the online price. I am willing to pay more locally, but this is just sad. read more

I had a terrible experience at this bike shop, a shame because it's close enough to our house to be really useful when one of our bikes needs something. We'd been given bikes by a friend and wanted them checked out, $90 later there had been air put in the tyres, new tyres but nothing else visibly done to it and the gears aren't running correctly. They obviously didn't ride it after they "fixed" it, and I never got anything explained or itemized. When I picked the bike up the person behind the counter misheard what I said and then angrily blamed me as if I was stupid. I don't need to come to a place that treats me like crap, I'll drive the bikes to another place no problem. The bike shop representative from a different place I met at a Farmers Market today was so much more respectful, seemed more knowledgable about bikes and told me he could tell me what needs doing to the other bikes / how much it would cost before actually doing it. That's all I would have asked in the first place. That the guy was nice to me and not incredibly rude just earned him my future business on all of our bikes. read more

I remember coming here many years ago when I was looking for my first bikes with my dad. Since my dad is a bike geek, we always frequented good LBS in the area (Village Cyclesport, George Garner, Bikes Plus, etc.) My bike was here the other day in hopes that the service department could work out a drivetrain issue. I was notified that it was fixed and ready to get picked up. Before I paid, I took a test ride to make sure that the problem was fixed. It wasn't. They DID complete the work that they thought would fix the problem (new shifter cable and housing), but it was clear that they didn't take it out for a test ride, as the bike was exhibiting the exact same problem as when it was dropped off. I notified service and someone got to work on it right away. He probably spent about 2 hrs trying to figure it out, swapping components, test rides, etc. but to no avail. Finally, we decided to try a different chain, and the issue was resolved. In the end, I paid $20+cost of the new chain for them to troubleshoot and install a new cable/housing. That's not too steep, but I'm a little disappointed that a new cable/housing was installed in the first place, as this wasn't the problem and the existing cable/housing was already literally brand new. Plus, I would have figured the techs would have immediately recognized the SRAM chain (with the gold powerlink and all) on the XT drivetrain, and tried an XT chain from the beginning instead of the other time/parts/money spent. If I had just put an XT chain on from the start, the bike wouldn't have even been here.. What's the most disappointing to me is that they wanted me to pick up the bike and pay right away.. I'm glad I asked to ride it before I paid, otherwise I would have been really upset when I took the bike out the next day for a ride, only to find that nothing was fixed. After I left, I realized that after they put the new cable on, they neglected to cut and crimp a cap on.. They left maybe 6" worth of frayed cable sticking out loose near the spokes of my rear wheel.. Annoying. Also, the kid working the front counter/register took the bike out for a couple test rides, and each time he came back he claimed that the bike was shifting fine. This was clearly not true. Besides myself, the technicians took the bike out and agreed that it was not shifting right. Maybe he was hoping I didn't know much about bikes and that I'd take his word, pay, and leave.. Plus he was shifting pretty hard once and caused a nasty chain suck.. not cool. Overall, I didn't have a bad experience here, but it definitely wasn't good either. The manager(owner?) was friendly, and I had fun looking around at least. Maybe I'll have a better experience next time, but for now I'm giving this place 2 stars. read more

Village Cycle in Arlington Heights is a mixed bag. Here are some reasons to come here: 1) You are a bike n00b and need serious help picking out your bike. 2) You are a suburbanite who wants a nicer bike (as in, not one you can buy at Target or Sport Mart) but you don't feel like driving into the city to get it. Or, you want a somewhat unusual bike, like a two-person recumbent. 3) You need an extensive repair to your bicycle and are cool with leaving it overnight. 4) You want to test-drive the bike. When I bought mine here, they let me ride a few different ones around out back to see which I liked better. Not every shop lets you do that; Target and Sport Mart sure don't. Here are some reasons you might end up choosing this shop over some other suburban shops: 1) They have better prices on some things. I could have bought my Townie at a shop in Park Ridge and forked over an extra $100 bucks for it. 2) They have better selection than some other bike shops. 3) They have a big parking lot. 4) They have a lot of different kinds of bike accessories. I got my car rack from here, for example. Here are some reasons to go somewhere else: 1) You want a small repair done in a short time frame. I came in here recently wanting the brakes tightened. I couldn't find my allen wrench, or I would have done it myself. It takes 5 minutes, and they wanted me to leave it overnight. No thanks! I'll just get a new allen wrench. 2) You just want a bike helmet, or something small like that. The bike helmets here are pretty pricey. So are some of the accessories--I saw my car rack somewhere else for almost $50 less after buying it here. 3) You just want a very basic bike for your kid and you don't want to spend much money on it. There are tons of great web sites and online forums to help you get an idea of what kind of bike you want before you even start shopping. Think about what you want and what you're willing to pay for it before coming here. I haven't had problems with the service, but I don't like Village Cycle so much that I'm willing to pay $70 for a bike helmet just to give them business. read more

OMG I am really surprised at the other review here. I had just the opposite experience here... I had the BEST customer service - above and beyond! I was very well taken care and I only came in to purchase a bike rack for my car. I was calling everywhere for a specific trunk mounted bike rack that I wanted, and they had it. Not only were they less expensive than their competition, they only had one left in the color that I was looking for...ok I really wanted pink, and of course, it is a specialty color, which they could have ordered for me, and they offered to do, directly from the manufacturer... but I needed it that day. So anyway, they put my bike rack on hold... I went in to pick it up several hours later, they were very busy in the store, and not only did one person help me, but 3 gentlemen made sure I was very well taken care of. I had some questions, and they were very helpful and were able to answer everything I asked knowledgeably. In addition... they took the liberty of installing my bike rack on my trunk right then and there to show me how to do it properly. Which I thought was great!!!! Especially since they were sooo busy!!! Who else does this for you? Everyone else gives you the box and says see ya, read the manual. I would highly recommend them, and I would go back for any other needs I have related to my bike! read more

I bought a Trek bike here a few years ago. They let me test ride it and I liked it. It was an entry-level Trek at $450 and I got the vibe that if i wasn't spending over $1000 it wasn't worth there time. I came back the next year for a tune-up and the service department was horrible. I stood around waiting for 30 minutes before someone even said anything. Again, just an attitude. I know take my bike to REI for service. They at least greet you and are courteous. Village is a specialty shop, but you don't have to look down on people if they're not spending a ton of money on a bike. For most people $300+ is a lot of money regardless on what you spend it on. read more

I have been mountain biking for many years and am looking to get into road biking as well. After a lot of research, I decided I wanted to check out the Trek Domane and Madone lines. I don't want a cheap bike because I know I will just end up wanting too soon. I also don't want a $5000.00 bike for my first ride. I set $2500 as my budget. luckily for me there is a Trek dealer just a few blocks from my house, or so I thought. I went to the store and should have left after I had to explain the difference between models to the "salesperson." I am in sales and if one of my customers ever knows more about my product than me, I am in big trouble. Once I finished training the salesperson on the Trek bikes they sell and the difference between components and model numbers, and that WSD stood for Woman Specific Design and wouldn't be a great bike for a 6'2" 220 pound guy, I asked if they had my size in stock so I could ride it. This seemed to annoy him a great deal as he sighed and thumbed through a card catalog drawer like at the old libraries (it is 2013 isn't it? No computer inventory?) Alas, he had none in my size. Oh well, he thought to himself. At this point he answered the phone and started talking to a customer as if our business was concluded. I waited patiently until he was finished and asked if he could check with other shops or Trek to see if they could locate my bike(Shouldn't he have offered to do that?) Now he didn't know this, but I had already checked on Trek's website and knew that my bike was available. He told me that there were no more 2013's around anywhere, not even in the factory and that my best option was to wait for the 2014's to come in. The 2013 bikes are now discounted to $2200.00, right in my sweet spot while the 2014's will likely be closer to $3k. I asked "Are you sure, I looked on line earlier today and saw some." He replied with indignation, " I am looking on the OFFICIAL DEALER WEB PAGE, and there are no more left in the country." It was obvious that if I wasn't going to take a bike off the floor that these guys had no interest in helping me. Overall, everyone in there is a little snotty and seem very bothered when customers disturb their day by coming into the store, not really typical friendly bike shop kind of people. By the way, I called the Trek store in Highland Park. Chris, the sales manager called me back even after they were closed and informed me that the Trek warehouse has 24 60 inch Domanes left in stock and he would be glad to order me one. Super friendly and knowledgeable. Kind of like you would expect a bike guy to be. Get bent Village Cycle. I'll go spend my $2200.00 in Highland Park and a couple years from now when I'm ready for the $5000.00 bike,or when my two kids need any of the half dozen bikes they will likely own, I won't even consider you. read more

I came here yesterday because a bike that I purchased on eBay was having trouble shifting. I figured all it needed was a derailleur adjustment. I explained my problem to the mechanic (Rob) and he told me it would be $12.50 up front. I was kind of weary paying up front, especially because he barely glanced at the bike. I suspect this is just a formality, however. Rob then proceeded to thoroughly examine my bikes drivetrain. He informed me that the previous owner must have been in a severe crash as the derailleur was gouged and the hanger was incredibly bent. Rob even obliged when I requested that he sign a letter stating what he told me. I am now in the process of filing a claim against the seller on eBay, as he stated the bike was in great condition. I am very thankful for the advice and information given to me by Village Cyclesport. Although they seemed incredibly busy with it being memorial day weekend, I was still given a thorough evaluation. Thank you Village Cyclesport, I will make sure to come back knowing I will receive professional and honest maintenance on my bike. read more

Before going to Village Cycle I went to a few other cycle shops which were of NO help. I'm VERY new to cycling. I needed shoes (cycle shoes - and was looking for a specific kind) and the guys at Village cycle really helped make that possible and were so helpful. They were so helpful that the Arlington Heights location didn't have my size, so they called the Elk Grove location and I was able to get there and have the guys help me no problem! Tonight, I went in to get my bike adjusted and the gentleman that helped me was very nice and also helped me out with some pointers in which I intend to use. I never write bad reviews but I was so bothered by my experience here today. So my husband and I are trying to get into biking ( Like a lot of people during the pandemic) and went here to look around and talk to someone who could maybe give us more information. The gentleman at the front desk asked if we needed help. I told him I was looking for the Women's trek Bike that was blue ( Probably a stupid way to ask) but that should show how little I know. I had looked it up online before I came and it said it was in stock. He rolled his eyes and told me I would have to do better than that. I apologized and looked it up and told him which bike I was looking for. He told me they were out of the bike and they probably weren't going to get more until August. Didn't offer any other help. I then asked about more information about my husband and how he could get fitted for a bike ( He is 6'5 and totally New to biking). He looked my husband up and down And said he would need a 2xl frame and that's not happening right now because of the pandemic. Didn't offer any other help or information. Rolled his eyes multiple times while we were talking. Another man that worked there came from behind him and offered us more information and was much friendlier. Definitely got a bad vibe from the man at the desk and felt judged because I didn't know about bikes but that's why I went there... because I don't know anything about bikes. Sad that we didn't have a good experience there considering all the good reviews. But that's cool because we will spend our money elsewhere. read more

Village Cyclesport was the 2nd bike shop I went into to shop for an electric bike. The first store had a very limited selection so wan't too interested. Village Cyclesport has a nice selection of ebikes for various needs and price points. I worked with Peter and told him my needs. He immediately zeroed in on the right bike for me. He is REALLY knowledgeable, not just about bikes in general, but about the products that the store stocks and their inventory. Could immediately answer any question that I had. He also recognized that I'm not really into cycling so he spared me all of the technical jargon, etc. Given how expensive ebikes are, it put me at ease knowing that I was being sold the right bike for me. I am so glad I did not purchase my bike from store #1. The only reason that my review doesn't have a 5-star rating is that my bike is back-ordered and I have yet to pick it up. I have no reason to believe that that will be a positive experience, but until I get my bike, I'll stay at 4 stars :) **** Update to my review.....Village Cyclesport offers a 30 day price match guarantee. I purchased a gary fisher hifi at a great price because it was the last one and a 08 model. Unfortunately I cracked the frame twice but the staff handled the warranty claim and fixed it free of charge which was very nice because gary fisher doesn't pay for the labor. Parts only. The second time it cracked they upgraded me to a 2011 fuel ex9. Yelp is Extorting money from small Businesses. Once again they took care of everything and even gave me a free $100 headset because the old one would not work. All labor was free transfering every part off the garyfisher hifi onto the fuel ex9 frame. I couldn't be happier with my new bike. This place really does make sure the customer leaves happy even if the store takes a bit of a loss. This place is the best!!!!! read more

I picked up an older trek 2300 for my 1st road bike,I brought it to the Rand Rd location to find out the sti(?) shifters were shot and needed replacement. The shifters cost $300+ so i figured the bike was not worth rehabing.The mechanic sold me some used shimano sti shifters for $50 that still looked beautiful! He also put on new tires, cables and matching seafoam green tape and water cages!!I LOOOOOOOOOOVE my new road bike. Absolutly gorgeous!! I feel like any other shop would have told me to toss the old trek and push me to buy a new bike but they didnt give up on her. I'm new to road biking but felt well informed about what bike i had found and what it needed.. the repair was done quickly and much cheaper than what a new bike would have cost. I can't wait to go back next spring to get shoes and appearal. Thanks!!! read more

This ranks among the worst customer service experiences EVER. Worst of all, the person that gave us such awful service was the owner! Having the store open during major construction and renovation was one bad thing, but yelling at customers is completely inexcusable, especially when it is not warranted. I was in the market for a new triathlon bike but since I'm boycotting this place, they just lost $4000 of my business. read more
