I love this place, but you have to go in knowing that it is a old school decades-old thrift store like an actual thrift store, filled with clothes, shoes, even socks, hat, gloves, accessories, toys, books, small electronics, & More, so is not the most updated it's not the cleanest because there's so many items that change daily & it's pretty massive, so you can spend hours there-Like I do, but I like to dig & hunt for treasures! The Thrifting world has changed a lot because of so many people are resellers now & stores like village discount outlet know that so you will see much higher prices on brand names or more highly sought pieces. The real gems are in the aisles, but you need to take your time & you can still find high-quality pieces that are on trend and/or vintage items that are of excellent quality, but what great is there are still basics & people who shop here for baby & kids clothes who need to be on a budget or don't want to spend too much money on clothes & more they may not wear for long. I literally just started writing reviews because I do like to gate keep my favorite stores, but if they don't have enough business, then they can't stay in business. They've updated their checkout systems with nice state of the Art POS systems & surprisingly have a VIP member club that allows you to earn points & I've spent so much I've gotten discounts, so you really can't complain when you're shopping and getting such great deals if you can be patient, know how to look dig and find what you want and need! read more

This is my local Village Discount and I come here at least once a week. Pros: -Kind staff -Location is great, close to many other cute stores on Clark -Disorganized clothes not sorted by size (maybe only a pro for me because I love the hunt) Cons -Prices are at times ridiculous even compared to other Village Discounts in the city. I feel like they over price things in more popular neighborhoods which is frustrating! Have more consistent pricing across stores so I don't feel like I'm paying an extra $5 because I'm on Clark St. -Messy and Dirty like all Village Discounts, If you're an experienced thrifter this isn't too much of an issue but clothes are not washed before being displayed and can often be stinky or dusty or stained! Make sure to wash your hands and clothes throughly after, but it's not any dirtier than other Villages. -Too much stock due to high prices. The racks are often hard to navigate and are overstuffed compared to other stores, likely due to the higher pricing of the store. Overall it's a decent thrift where you can absolutely find beautiful vintage gems and deals on higher end items, but it's often more overpriced than other Villages. If it's your local shop it will do just fine, but I would recommend the Village Discounts on Kedzie or Lawrence if you transit. read more

Being completely honest I've never seen anything in my life like the prices in this store. Here's what you can expect. Used basic t-shirts $10-$15. Used polos shirts $15-$50 Used skinny jeans $25-$40. Used tennis shoes $30-$100 Not to mention the store and the clothes that are in it have a horrible stale smell. Most employees in there are very rude and I notice they will alter tags when half price day is coming around, like making $10 into $18 by putting a line through the 0. My best thrift store find of all time: two years ago I found the original pressings of every vinyl album by Talking Heads and the jacket sleeve and vinyl were in perfect condition, all for $1 each! Unfortunately, 99% of their vinyl album in very bad condition and by mediocre artists from the 1950s-1980s. So what's this store about? Well, true to their slogan, it's a different store every day. VDO is what I call a collector's thrift store because they seem to have certain unusual things that you find over and over again which you tend to not see at other thrift stores. If you collect these type of things, you want to stop by regularly. I've been shopping at this store since the late 90s and it's changed little; still dusty, still disorganized, but with less women in hijabs and red dots on their forehead who seem to live an utterly miserable existence. But in their defense, I don't care for the stories I used to hear about how the employees are treated and I'm guessing they're true because they always seem to be working at any given time I'm there. The employees seem less miserable these days. Does it matter to a shopper? Yes, I think it does. The back corner with the books and misc. merchandise is always a mess, which is too bad, and sometimes hazardous by junk with sharp edges piled up in a precariously way. Pulling something out of the heap can be like playing Jenga, so be careful. There are certain unique things I find here regularly. I've found some great stuff much cheaper than it would be on eBay or a second-hand boutique, but you have take your time, and dig around. They have a lot of clothes, which is nice, but I don't have as much luck finding nice stuff for a good price like I do with non-clothing items. The real downside of looking for stuff there is the narrow aisle and rude customers who can be absolute obstacles to get around. Sometimes there are some customers on the down and out so bad that have to either put up with them, keep your distance, or just leave. In general, it's a fun place to go digging if bored or just passing time or a collector on the hunt, and if there's something you actually need, you're likely to have good luck too if you keep checking in. read more

This must be where the Village People get their outfits. This place is a big vintage (used) clothing store. Their selection is pretty deep. The Yelp page says that they do consignments, but it seems that most, if not all of their stuff is donated. Their stuff can be pretty worn out, but there are deals up in here. I came in looking for obscure Chicago shirts, but didn't really find what I was looking for. Their stuff was a bit more used than I was hoping. They have their stuff sorted into men's and women's clothing, with narrow aisles to go down. Their electronics section or miscellaneous items seems so overpriced. I don't know who they're kidding hoping to sell old, blown out speakers and eight-track players at a markup. But if that's the kind of thing you need, I guess this Village Discount Outlet can be your place. The clothes didn't all seem like they're exactly clean. Some places will run the clothes through a dry cleaner or a laundry prior to hanging them up on the racks. Not this place... read more

Be prepared to dig in! Lots of volume at this location, and one can do a lot of damage for little depending on what you are looking for. If you like thrift stores, then you have to check this one out. It is big, lots of inventory, the aisles are narrow and you will have lots of company to dig along with. This is one of the best thrift stores in Chicago, especially if you get the daily items that are half price. Is it the fanciest? No. Is it the neatest? No. But if you have some time and patience, it's great. My husband gets really nice shirts here for $2.50 and $3.00. The purses can be real finds. I have gotten slacks and wonderful tops - all in the $2.00-$3.00 range. And the children's clothes are just wonderful - pristine, some with tags still on them. The shoes are not displayed in a helpful way, so this place, for me, is not the greatest for shoes. There are certain racks for new, un-used things and those are higher priced and not ever half-price. All in all, we always leave here with terrific items! read more

Most expensive village discount location I've ever been to. Every doll was behind the glass and priced for nearly $20 each. You can get new dolls at Target, sometimes even with an additional outfit, for $10 - $15 when they go on sale. They also had a Steam controller priced for $120 and a bag of doll/bear clothes for $28. These thrift stores are charging eBay prices, and sometimes you can get these things for even less on eBay! It honestly felt like I was shopping at a pawn shop. People are sincere enough to donate their things and not want a single penny for anything, and this thrift store is pricing everything as if they've struck gold. I couldn't even afford anything here, which sucks because I shop at the thrift to save money. But nowadays you're better off just going to Walmart or Target and getting new stuff for the same price or just a couple of bucks more. Lastly I wouldn't bother even donating anything here because you honestly wouldn't be helping less fortunate people. You'd just be helping their business make more money and rip off customers with their astronomical prices. Donate to Salvation Army since they at least actually give back to the community. read more

This location isn't exactly in the hood I reside, but it's a short-bus ride east. I knew I had to make it here at some point today for their half-off sale. The Village Discount Outlet (VDO) will disseminate the next-big sale with one of their stocking-stuffer flyers and through their PA system, in both English and Spanish. Having a sale means there will be a battle that doesn't necessarily generate casualties. When I went there after 1700 hour, I know there was some kind of war that has already occurred. Since I wasn't drafted earlier of the day, I could only imagine what was happening onsite. The entire store was messy, disorganized, and wiped-out! I just came from another VDO in the south side, and I haven't scored big today with anything. Thus, this store wasn't my last-ditch effort today for all the glory of my thrift-shopping. Although the stuff was everywhere, on the ground, on top of the racks, and inside a child's mouth (not kidding you), I was able to find a yellow acrylic beanie and a Ralph Lauren silk shirt for $3.80 after tax! This location is an awkward set-up. As soon as walking in, you will see the accessory department with shopping carts blocking on the hallway. After you cash in your purchase, the carts are still here to make the "supposed exit" inaccessible. I don't think it was designed wisely and thoughtfully. Well, this is a thrift store. Don't ask for too much because you're ready getting what you've paid for...or getting "more than" what you've paid for...sometimes. The public transportation is really convenient. You can find good things if you're willing to dig, I'll give them that. Overall the store is overcrowded, poorly lit, with very narrow aisles. The reason I'm writing a review is because of the horrendous customer service. Every time I come here the employees are the rudest and most unfriendly retail workers I've come across, EVER. Today I was there and instead of saying "excuse me," the employee pushing a cart just rammed her cart into my cart to get me to move. I couldn't believe it. After I moved over so she could pass, she didn't say a word to me. 15 minutes before closing, the man who I assume is the owner, was walking around yelling at people to leave. Well, well, well I must say this Village Discount location far outshines the rest. Granted I was there on a Monday afternoon...I imagine it's a zoo on the weekends just as all the others are... However, this one is somewhat well organized. Now of course this statement is relative to other VD's (get your mind out of the gutter), so the fact that one can actually tell which section is which...good news. I appreciate the color coding as well, like a little used rainbow of items...definitely good finds to be found, but the "better garments" section is near the front. I always wonder how they pick those...I think it's random, but good effort. They have sales every day, of course I never seem to pick those items. I did find a sweet prom dress, but alas...too small. The one drawback at these places is no dressing rooms. Ah well, $3...not a big loss. But I really wanted to wear that magenta silk/black velvet little number ;) This location is just south of Andersonville, and far enough away from the main drag that you can find metered parking. A few tips before you venture into Village Discount: - Eat breakfast. If you're determined to hunt, you'll be here for a while. - Drink espresso. It'll keep you alert as you sift through racks on racks on racks. - Meditate. You'll want to center yourself as much as possible because there's a lot to take in here. I only followed the breakfast rule. I walked into VDO on a whim and the outside makes it appear much smaller than it is....smaller as in, you wouldn't think it had much stuff. It's still small in size, but they have merchandise for days. From my scan, the merchandise was just okay, but there are probably a few diamonds in the rough laying around...literally. I'm a veteran thrifter and even I became quickly overwhelmed. The layout is super squished together and a bit haphazard. I lasted all of ten minutes, two of which were used to navigate myself back out of there. You're a true thrift warrior if you make it longer than that. read more

Yeah, you'd think that's great news, except for one thing - in the process of losing 10 sizes in a span of a year, all my clothes are way too big and rather ill fitting at that. I have been buying new clothes here and there, mainly when Old Navy has sales, but damnit, I'm tired of wearing baggy clothes! I came here for cheap clothes that won't look so cheap. Because I'm a broke-ass girl! Village Discount on Clark Street is one hot mess, to sound 2006. I couldn't believe the sheer size of this place. Yeah, you gotta dig to find the things you need - everything is organized by color, not size - so once you find what you like, you gotta pause to see if it'll fit you. And there's no dressing room, so you gotta guess if it fits. Or if there is a dressing room, I sure as heck am not stepping inside of it! I found 3 jeans and 3 black sweaters. 2 tops were brand new with original tags, and one of those new tops was Banana Republic merino wool for $3! I think it should have been in the nicer rack that they charge more for, but I'm not sharing that with the workers. Oh, and one of the jeans didn't have a tag on it, so they couldn't sell it to me. Booo!! But the 2 jeans and 3 sweaters cost me $12.36. That's cheaper than a new top at Old Navy - whooo! Now just try to guess if my clothes are secondhand at the next yelp event. Yesterday I called my 17 year-old daughter on her cell phone. She is a thrifting queen. I told her I needed a pair of blue jeans, and I hate paying retail for blue jeans. For years, I have heard both of my daughters rave about Village Discount, so I asked her to take me there. We ventured in. Oh, man. Rag-tag. But, my daughter insisted, there are deals to be found here if you just look. She found me a pair of Levis that had never been worn; stickers and tags still on the pants. Price: $8.00. I asked her where I could try the pants on and she just laughed. "Dad, there are no changing rooms here." "Well, what if I buy them and they don't fit?" I asked. ""Throw them away," my daughter quipped. Hmm. Practical girl. I brought them to the cash register. "That will be $4.00 plus tax," the cashier said. I asked why and pointed out that there was an $8.00 price tag. In broken English, the cashier explained, and my daughter confirmed this later, that each day they feature several colors of clothing that are 50% off, and blue was a discount color that day. My kind of place. We took the jeans home and they fit perfectly. I said to my daughter that I was just going to leave them on. "No, no, no...you can't do that," she insisted, so I asked why not. "They spray all their stuff with disgusting insecticides. Take those off and wash those right now," she insisted again. So, I did. And then I wore my $4.00 prize out for the evening. Wow! All I can say is, wow! I say that not because I was impressed, but because I am so incensed. I can't believe how angry I am. I spent about an hour in the store, and all I came away with, is that it has the biggest stupid vibe of any thrift store I have ever been to. Why was I empty handed, except for the impression I was left with? I'll tell you. At first I was excited to see a new pair of shoes, that I knew could sell for probably $30 or more. They weren't my style, but I knew I'd have no problem selling them. I threw them in my cart and went down the next aisle. I was looking for a certain kind of boot, so I wasn't paying much attention, but then I started noticing STAPLES. These weren't just any staples, mind you. These were HUGE INDUSTRIAL STYLE STAPLES. They don't put just one in per pair of shoes, they put in 3 to 4 per pair!! There were several shoes I could have bought, but surprise, surprise, when I pried the staples off, they all had huge hulking holes in them. There were hundreds and hundreds of shoes, donated by many thoughtful people, all ruined. Hello, genius thrift store manager and assistant manager. This store should be served with a side of Xanax. It's the monkey house with used clothes. If I was a patient bargain hunter, I might be able to find some interesting items here. Unfortunately, I am none of those things. I walk through the door and immediately overcome by the stress of dozens of parents squeezing their carts down the narrow aisles while their hundreds of children run underfoot. I came here the day before Prom, when the weather turned suddenly awful, to see if I could find a men's overcoat. After some searching, I found the 5 men's coats in the store. I would have had more luck shopping for lingerie. There were plenty of suits and suit coats, but no actual coats. How can that be? It's nice that they arrange the shirts by color. It's pretty. Finding one in your size can be a task. If you like thrift stores and people, you may like this store. This place is AWESOME. My Facebook friends and Twitter pals are probably already tired of me bleating about Village Discount. I have gone in there several times recently with about $60-70 in my pocket and strolled out with 2-3 garbage bags crammed with good stuff. Yes, you have to pick through the racks, and of course, it's seriously busy at certain points, so, duh, go at the off-times or you'll be fighting for aisle space and sweating in line for 10-15 minutes. With Village Discount being 4 blocks away from my apartment, at this point I would feel like an idiot going to Target or anywhere else for jeans, pants, skirts, tops, sweaters, light jackets, coats, or dresses, honestly. 45 cents for a pair of Nike workout pants? A beautiful designer winter wool coat for $6? Yeah, dude, and Mondays are half price. I'm not a fashion plate by any means - I ride my bike everywhere and I dress pretty practically, but in this economy, this place is still a godsend. If you keep a list of things you need (black fall peacoat, a dress for that friend's wedding, workout pants, white work shirts, etc.) and make a pass through Village Discount every few weeks, your closets will burst with clothes you love, and clothes that make you feel like a genius for only spending $78 for a new Spring wardrobe. Dare I expose my newest secret? A place so special and so full of deals that it beats Brown Elephant ten fold? A place where I could (and did) spend three hours straight sifting feverishly through each rack, aisle by aisle, to find my newest greatest wardrobe piece? A place where Franco Sarto and Guess shoes were $5, and never worn, and perfectly fit my feet. A place where there are three racks, 50 feet long, full of Women's jeans that look like they have never been worn. A place where deals are so sweet, that yes, even I picked up a shopping cart, and piled it high. I found this gem a while back, but obviously hadn't seen all the hidden items through the stock piled racks of clothing and shoes. And recently, I stumbled in to buy one item (of course), which ended up in a shoe buying frenzy, 8 pairs, and $34 later. Secretly, I returned that night as the BF went out with friends, to search the racks for one pair of black pants. Three hours later, ten pairs of jeans, one pair of black pants, and six shirts / sweaters, and $48 out of my pocket, I had hit the jackpot! Banana Republic, Hollister, GAP, BCBG, J Jill, Abercrombie, and all looked like they had never been touched. I was in thrift store heaven!! I couldn't believe how many great items (and great deals) that I had found. My only curse is my thinning pocket book with other monetary obligations, or I would probably go to this place every chance I got! So what if there isn't a fitting room and that they staple the $3, $1, and highest $7 ticket prices to each article? Overlook it and you too, just might have your entire wardrobe revamped in one evening! read more

Points for being remarkably well organized for a thrift store. I've never had much luck clothing-wise but then again I don't usually come in for clothes and therefore don't give the clothing racks my full attention. I did find all the trappings for my half of a Thelma & Louise Halloween costume. I'd even have managed to snag a pair of cowboy boots that looked to be my size except a small Hispanic man got to them first. (What's he doing in the ladies shoes section anyway!?!? Doesn't he know how hard it is to find decent shoes for my big feet?) Love their VHS selection, which is what usually calls me here. Sure there are no dressing rooms (it's a thrift store. There are never dressing rooms). But my mother taught me all her thrifting secrets (and so many other ones as well). A lack of dressing rooms don't stop this chick from trying on jeans. read more

This place looks like the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. There is stuff thrown everywhere and I mean everywhere. Be prepared to crawl, crouch, and touch things that make you wish you were wearing a hazmat suit. Prices seem pretty fair. Lots of things around $2 & $4. They don't seem to have any intake standards though. A lot of items were so used I wouldn't even use them as a cleaning rag. They're short staffed. If you want to see anything behind the counter, be prepared to wait. There is definitely a smell. You get used to it but it gave me a dull head ache. They do have tag sales but I didn't realize that until I was leaving since the tiny sign was pretty much hidden from view. This is easily the messiest thrift spot I've been too but I think it probably holds some hidden gems from time to time and it's the most reasonably priced thrift store I've seen so far in the Chicago area. read more

I really like most of the Village Discounts in the city, but for some reason I have had some of the best finds at this location including great designer brand names like Burberry, C.K, and Donald Trump. At this location, I have always been able to find tie clips, cufflinks, and pre-packaged dress shirts - a rarity at the other locations. It is always a fun experience to shop at a Village Thrift store. I can only give it a three because it still smells super dingy and most of the staff are complete jerks. I have to say 4 stars because of the random things we find. Extra large, but fits are toaster perfectly cozy, homemade and kitschy as hell. Random fabrics galore. Good non worn shoes. Random T REX puzzle with all pieces from the 1970s. Don Draper esque glasses for under 10 dollars, with actual gold flecking on these. I've really lucked out here a lot, the staff is always polite and the store, although dirty at times, it's a thrift store. If you're going for ambiance try a fancy upscale consignment shop. Oh, we recently found new, sealed lego set for 4 dollars and it ended up being worth 130 dollars...yea this place is really odd. As for clothes, they seem to have a lot of larger sizes, at least the last time I went- this goes for plus size and big and tall men. With thrift stores its always a debate on whether or not to share your good locations because if someone beats you to that perfect item its not like there's a restock available! Basically I think all thrift stores are cramped, crowded and smell a bit funky. This is what makes them cheap. You have to invest a bit of time to sort through it all, but if you are lucky you come out with great finds. I try to hit them on the discount days like MLK, Presidents Day etc so everything is 50% off, but even at full price you find deals. this location is tight, but has a lot of good stuff. And for some reason there seems to be less kids playing on the floor than at other locations. I mainly shop for baby clothes and kids books and always find something great at this store. A Guns N Roses "Sweet Child O Mine" t-shirt for .40, a Baby Gap winter coat with matching snow pants for $4.00, and a huge stack of mint condition kids books for about .25 a piece. You have to be patient, but you can make out with some amazing deals. I would have gone to 4 stars, but the stupid "no tag, no sale" policy annoys the hell out of me. One day I was spending like $30 and one stupid stuffed toy thing didn't have a tag and they wouldn't sell it to me, even though I offered to pay more than I knew they would price it for. I was furious. My husband went back and got it the next day for me for less than half of what I would have paid so it turned out fine in the end, but I was still annoyed. read more
