My friends picked Village Grill for our dinner last night, and when we made the plans, I wasn't hungry and said it doesn't matter where we eat. They enjoy eating here and usually have no problem. It took a good 20 minutes before our server took our drink order, and even longer to take our dinner order. We all three ordered because I changed my mind and decided I wanted a club sandwich, I also ordered a salad and so did my friend. We never got them until our meal arrived, and even then one was forgotten. When one of my friends received her order it was the wrong one. She ordered a chicken sandwich, not a burger. The burger that did come was burnt; luckily that is not what she ordered. We had to ask for refills as our server was walking by. She never once came to our table to see if we were doing OK. Nice hometown dinner. Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner. The options here are great, with a large variety to choose from. I LOVE the thick cut fries! The salad are also one of my favorites because as you know, im a ranch snob. The ranch here is fantastic! Don't let the old town vibe/appearance fool you... this place is always cleaned up when I visit. Did you say pie? Ya they have that too! I hate village grill. Every single year of my life for the past 13 years I have came to village grill, EVERY. SINGLE. JULY. I order the same thing. Mickey mouse pancakes. But this time, as of 2026, I got absolutely denied. I get asked," What can I get for you", I say." Oh Ill take the mickey pancakes." My server looks at me, smiles blankly and says, " You have to be 10 or younger." Obviously I think shes just joking around and I too smile blankly but then my face drops to the floor as I realize she is dead serious. Then she just asks me if I want a short stack and I say," Sure." Now Im salty I haven't been ten for 4 years and this has never been an issue. Maybe instead of paying attention to the fact I order of the kids menu they should direct their attention to the busted up walls OR ANYTHING ELSE. LITERALLY ANYTHING. Thats not even the worst part. My absolutely sweet as sugar cousin who is 9 orders the mickey pancakes. She doesn't even enjoy them that much. She said we should've switched. So if you are 10 or up , do not come here for the mickey pancakes. They will say no and crumble your whimsical dreams. Mind you, I have been thinking and talking about these mickey pancakes for a long long time of one day. We're fairly new to town, and have our in-laws visiting for the weekend. We couldn't decide on red house bbq or village grille and decided we would try red house for dinner and village for breakfast. Sadly we made the unforgivable mistake of parking in the large empty lot between the two and were threatened with having our cars towed by the homeless looking man who wandered over from village. I'm sure the Tehachapi Mountain Festival challenges many restaurants. There is a large influx of people and we all want to eat. We watched the parade and wandered around Central Park. There were many food vendors, but we wanted to sit inside. We walked over to Village Grill. They were pretty busy, but we go a booth near the front. Our waitress brought our drinks quickly and took our order. TheTriple-Decker sounded good to us. It came with choices of regular or seasoned fries. We went regular. It seemed our food was taking a while when our waitress came by to explain there was a mixup, but the food was on its way. It arrived shortly. This is good, old, diner food. It is tasty and in good portions. The service is very home style too. They are looking to please. A good place to eat. read more

This place has been around for a long, long time In Tehachapi, California. It's truly an old school type of diner serving breakfast lunch and dinner. I have my favorite dishes that I order here was there just a couple of days ago and previously had really loved the fish and chips then something happened and it didn't seem like the same fish. They assured me it was. I have a pretty good pallet, but it just wasn't the same then a while back, saw somebody ordering the fish and chips in the booth next to us and it looked like it had gone back to the old standard so I dove in and ordered it beautifully cooked fried to order cod with a light flour coating on it. it brought a smile to my face when it was delivered to the table I could tell they had gone back to the great fish that I once ordered. The service is always pretty darn good here when they get slammed it does slow down a bit which is to be expected. My friend ordered a triple-decker sandwich that has turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc. on any kind of bread usually sourdough is ordered that also came with perfect crispy fries, but you have to ask them for some ranch to dip the fries in no big deal. I have both pluses and minuses to share about this restaurant. I love that there's a very large parking lot, which is hard to find in this town when you go out to eat, but walk carefully through that parking lot, because there are a lot of places you can trip and fall there, as the concrete is broken in a lot of places. I've only eaten there once so far, but the food was good. I had the French dip sandwich and there was plenty of beef on it, and the bread was fresh and soft like I like it, but the au jus tastes like every other diner's does, like it's a dry mix with water and it's incredibly salty. A lady at the counter was having a bacon and eggs breakfast and that looked pretty good. The interior of the place is kind of dark and dingy and sort of depressing, but I guess some people might call that "homey"; that won't keep me from coming back but normally I order takeout anyway since I don't like to eat alone. We came to Tehachapi on Christmas day and this was one of the very few places open. At first, I had my reservations but they were quickly put aside. Everyone here was so friendly and we ended up having lunch and dinner there. I had the hot turkey sandwich and my husband had the club. Both were pretty good. For dinner, I had the steak Christmas special and my husband had the cheeseburger. Both were fine. But mine came with soup and I got the pozole. It was amazing! It tasted just like my grandmother's and this place has been added to my heart. Great pozole, good food and friendly, welcoming people. We are on our way to Death Valley and wanted a real breakfast and that's what we got at the VILLAGE GRILL. It was 9:00 AM on a Thursday and the joint was busy. The menu covers all possibilities and based on the other tables the portions are always large and tasty looking. I enjoyed the cinnamon roll french toast with two eggs and sausage links. Atmosphere: The Villiage Grill is the picture-perfect small-town diner. There is plenty of outdoor seating. Inside, you'll find a full-length bar and plenty of booths and tables. There isn't anything fancy at the Villiage Grill, but there doesn't need to be. Everyone was spaced out, and the employees were all wearing (fun) masks. Even though I was picking up a to-go order, I felt safe. Coffee: The coffee at the Village Grill was good. One of my favorite features of diners is when they offer the little flavored creamers to add-in. The Village Grill had french vanilla creamers if you wanted them. It was brewed hot and fresh, and I have no complaints. Food: The Village Grill menu has everything you want in a diner. There are the usual breakfast suspects from pancakes and omelets to the fun options like "South of Border" options that included the chile Verde omelet, huevos rancheros, and steak, breakfast enchiladas. I was feeling fun and decided to order the chile Verde omelet. It came with pork Chile Verde, cheese, tortillas, and I chose rice and beans. There was the option of hashbrowns instead of rice and beans or toast instead of a tortilla, but how often do you get those options? The Chile Verde omelet was good, in fact, one of the best diner omelets I've had in a while. There was plenty of pork chile, and the omelet was filling. The rice and beans were great, and the corn tortillas were delicious. There were a few bonus tortilla chips too. I haven't been that satisfied with a diner meal in a while.   Cost: For my Chile Verde omelet and coffee, it was $14. Service: The staff was all friendly, and my food was ready when I got there. Everyone was wearing masks, and I felt comfortable inside. In all, a great experience. Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back? If you are looking for a small-town diner, I definitely suggest Village Grill in Tehachapi, CA.  You won't find much healthy there, but it's inexpensive and good food. read more

Dropped by on my way back to Bakersfield after working in Mojave most of the day. The server was nice and took good care of me keeping my drink refilled and stuff. The mushroom avocado chicken sandwich was alright. The chicken was a bit overcooked and dry and the mushrooms were really overcooked, they were crunchy they had been grilled so long, borderline burnt. Seasoned fries were really good, it was an alright meal. I might drop by if I'm in the area again but I think I'll explore some other new options first. read more

Once again we are in Tehachapi, CA, getting fuel. Asked for a good place to eat and the clerk and another customer both said "The Village Grill". It was just down the street, so off we went. What a wonderful find. Smallish, with wonderful service and food. We ordered a ribeye breakfast that came with biscuits n gravy and I got scrambled eggs with ham, tomatoes instead of potatoes and an english muffin. The steak was a tiny bit chewy, but what a wonderful flavor and as you can see there was no skimping on the ham in my scramble. But what we enjoyed most was the wonderful service and all the locals chatting around us. read more

This is my favorite restaurant for breakfast in Tehachapi. The food comes fast and it comes good . I love their chicken fried steak , hash browns , scrambled eggs with cheese and a biscuit with gravy . It's absolutely delicious , it's cooked perfectly. The biscuit and gravy is the best I've ever had . The biscuit is fluffy and the gravy is creamy . Absolutely perfect . My son loves the omelette, he's says they're perfect . This is a small, fairly quiet establishment. There seem to be regulars here, as many customers were hanging out and chatting with the staff members. Service was friendly and timely, and the place appeared clean. There is no kids menu, but there are still kid friendly options. Sourdough was crisp and crunchy, the tuna inside could have used more mayo. Your option of regular fries or seasoned. I chose seasoned Fries, which were hot and yummy. My wife ordered the sirloin with mushrooms. It was good. Corn bread was 4 out 5. I would recommend serving a a dollop of real butter instead of the fake butter with it. SUMMARY: this restaurant will go down as one of the most memorable ones we've visited not because the food or service was outstanding, but more because it was one of the few that was open on our hellacious 19 hour attempt to get into the So Cal basin on Thanksgiving Day. BACKGROUND Wife has a jewelry show in LA that weekend so we headed down from SF bay to LA. We rushed down to beat the snow but that's to CalTrans f#%*€g ineptitude like every agency run by the state, nary a snow plow or salted road was to be found. We were starving from our already long drive (9hours at that point). FOOD (4/5) I ordered a basic hamburger with fries. It was a hand formed party on the smaller side with really fresh ingredients like the lettuce. The fries could've better but overall it was a 4/5. ATMOSPHERE like a diner that's been around for a long time. No frills. Clean. SERVICE Good enough, friendly waitress. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, SIR While we were dining, an elderly couple sauntered in to a rear booth behind us. As he was aged, his wife assisted him to their table. I noticed that he had a well worn US Navy Veteran WW2 hat on. After a few minutes, the waitress came back from taking their order and we stopped the waitress and asked for their bill. We hope they enjoyed their Thanksgiving lunch :) RETURN VISIT? Highly unlikely as this was a once in a blue moon, random visit. New Year's Eve, about 5-5:30, place we called that was said to be open til 8pm had already closed. Driving down the street, heading toward the freeway home, we saw the OPEN sign on the door. Circled the block to go past again, a few people inside, ok we'll try. Best decision we could have made and glad the other place was closed! Greeted at the door with a big Welcome and a smile that actually reached the lady's eyes! I am truly sorry, I do not remember the lady's name. Lady was polite, cheerful, funny! Lady took order and when she brought our drinks, she sat a pitcher of Mr Pibb on table, laughing how she would save herself steps and still keep my son's glass full! We all had a good laugh and questioned how she knew my son soooo well! Food was good too! I think that, even if food was just passable, we would still go back, just for the waitress! New in town. My biggest disappointment is quality of restaurants in town but this place was a total surprise. Great place for breakfast. Service was excellent, the food came hot, I repeat it came hot. Most restaurants like Jake's and Big Papa's come borderline warm to cold. This place stays on top of their customers and that nice.
