I live in Tehachapi and like to dine out a lot, usually more than half of every week. I would say that Village Grill is the most inconsistent restaurant in town (so far). One time you go there the food is ok, never great, but decent. The next time it borders on being inedible. The other thing I don't like is that when the food is clearly of low quality, they still have no problem at all charging you full price for it. The waitress even said "sorry" as we were leaving. I have been disappointed by this restaurant enough that I will probably not go back anymore and I feel strongly enough about this to finally write a review. OMG! The same thing happened to my family and I as another Yelper "Stephanie" experienced. We sat down, and it took awhile for the waitress to take our drink orders. Drinks didn't come the whole 25 minutes we were waiting to get our food order. We walked out after sitting there for 25 minutes. We did try to flag down our waitress---who wasn't very pleasant about it. *sigh* I wish my review would also include something about the food. Sorry Yelpers! Hmm...so let's talk about the building. There is plenty of parking on the side. As you walk in it seems almost like your walking into a house or perhaps an old building that served as a church. Kind of hard to explain, but when we first got there, the waitress walked us to the back of the restaurant which definitely felt like it could have been a church. There are plenty of tables, BTW. The menu actually looked pretty good. I'm torn, I have to give 2 stars, not one. I didn't try the food, but looked pretty good. I love this place. The staff is friendly and provides great service. The building itself could use some work, but what else do you expect from a 'old school' diner like this. Came to visit with my nephew and his family. After an afternoon at the shooting range, we wanted a warm cafe style meal. This was perfect. We were met with friendly faces and were promptly sat in a comfortable booth with fun little satire books for entertainment. The waiter and waitress, along with other staff were very attentive and our drinks never got anywhere near empty. We had the appetizer platter, which was a mixture of onion rings, mini-flautas, cheese sticks, etc. It was more than enough for 4 of us. Then, with all the extras that came with our meals, fried chicken plate, captain's platter, burger plate and a triple decker sandwich, we def needed to-go boxes. But we didn't even have to ask for 'em. April came to our table with containers in 2 sizes and we were all set. This is the perfect small town diner with all the hospitality you'd expect and more. Friend and I went up for lunch after leaving the bakersfield National Cemetery from our friend funeral sone decided to stop try this village grill it was cute little place. Sat down as soon as we arrive looked the menu over. I ordered the tuna melt sandwhich with fries. ( had the steak fries) Debbie had the Patty Melt with a side salad ( salad was a good size curtons we great) meat on the patty melt was thick just the way she liked it. We were stopping in on our way to Bakersfield and we popped in for dinner. The prices are way cheap compared to how much food they give you! I had the liver and onions and the liver was a little overdone but otherwise delicious. My husband had the Mediterranean Chicken Salad and couldn't stop making yummy noises. I couldn't finish my liver or huge piece of cornbread that accompanied my meal. Everything was delicious and a very fair price for the portion size, which we did not anticipate. Our server, Frances, was kind, timely, hospitable and helpful and attentive. Although I don't know when we'll be back this way, it is guaranteed we will visit the Village Grill again... But with near starvation stomachs, so we can finish everything. Additionally, they have humor books at each table to enjoy and laugh while dining, certainly a treat. The service is great the food is good its just all around good! I usually just get a ceaser salad. Ill try things from everyones plate though and its all YUM! everything (to me) seems reasonabley priced! So if your looking to have a small salad. There was nothing homemade about what we were served today. For example, the "Chicken Parmesan" had no Parmesan anywhere near it and came with a side of spaghetti that was clearly from a can. The chicken, while crispy, had a slice of white American cheese (the kind that comes wrapped in plastic) laying over it and the cook had not bothered to melt it even a little before sending the plate out. This came with a slice of apple pie, which we had to ask for twice. The pie BTW, is not house made either; the box looked similar to the ones you find in grocery store bakeries. We also ordered the chili rellano with beef enchilada. It came with a large amount of refrieds and rice, which were quite good. The rellano however, was DIS-GUS-TING: it tasted freezer burnt and as if it had been cooked in old fryer oil. We sent that back but no one really wanted to know why, which tells me they either don't care or they knew it was bad. Thankfully, we were not charged for that part of our meal. We live in Tehachapi but it is highly unlikely we will be eating here ever again. I am already suffering and my digestion would never forgive me. read more

This is a great little diner. I got the steak sandwich with seasoned fries and it was amazing. I didn't know if I should eat it or marry it and have little baby steak sliders with it. I ordered it medium, and they actually cooked it medium. Most diners cook everything well done even if you order it rare. If you're ever in the little town of tehachapi, you should stop here and get something. They also have Mexican options on the menu that looked really good. read more

Mixed reviews here. When you walk in, it's almost like a yard sale! Purses, jewelry, books, candy: all for sale! Definitely odd. Now as for the food: the garlic bread, fish and split pea soup were delicious. The mixed veggies were straight from the can. My steak was tough and my mashed potatoes were okay, but nothing to brag about. Our waitress was very attentive. I did enjoy the joke books on the table. The food was good and the severs were super nice. I had the Chopped Steak (with mushrooms and onion rings) dinner with French Fries, mixed vegetables and a salad. The the dinner was really good except the mixed vegetables were over cooked. My uncle had the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast with eggs, hash browns and biscuits and gravy, he really enjoyed it. On a recent motorcycle ride to Las Vegas, our group of seven needed a warm, clean, friendly place to eat - and we got it here. The food was good, too! Everyone's food came at once, our coffee cups were never empty and the portions were very satisfying. This placed was so good, we even added it in on our return trip. The food is diner fair, but very tasty and enjoyable. The one standout - in both stops, the staff seemed very happy we came in. A lot of smiles, how are you's and ride safe's for us. I can't see us making this trek again, but if we do, Village Grill will be on our stop list. Kudos to the Tahachapi Chamber of Commerce for this suggestion. read more

We have eaten at a lot of places with good breakfast since my 6yr old and 2yr old will always choose pancakes. I usually come in alone with my 6,2 and 5months old children. This place has the best tasting pancakes in my families eyes. My son loves how they make the Mickey Mouse pancakes and even though they don't have chocolate pancakes for anyone who doesn't think good enough already can bring in chocolate chips and they add them. Lol. We have done this a few times for our son. Never have we had problems here at all. If someone's food was under or over cooked they fix it right away with no problems. Ana and Katie are the best. I try to go in evenings Ana would be there and before Katie left we would try and go on mornings she worked if we wanted to do early. Very wonderful service and they will always go that extra mile to make my children happy and eat well. By making things fun or just even getting us extra plates and napkins. And not only do they make my children have a wonderful experience they also tell me how wonderful and brave I am to venture out with three young children alone. Lol. Everything that came out looked gross. The vegetables were from a can the mash potatoes looked like the kind made from powder. Kind of your basic coffee shop. Nothing fancy, but the food was good, the place was clean and the service was pleasant. The menu selections were broader than your usual coffee shop menu. My husband and I stumbled across the Village Grill after we left a three-night camping trip to Death Valley. Maybe it was the fact that we were starving when we arrived, or maybe because there is absolutely NOTHING appetizing to eat between Death Valley and Tehechapi, but we were overjoyed when we found this place. Our breakfast and the service was wonderful. Our server Celeste was absolutely fabulous and our breakfast arrived in no time. For the price it can't be beat....I almost wanted to stay just to take advantage of the Early Bird Specials...something like salad, entree, drink and dessert all for $7! If you're looking for something gourmet, I recommend you look elsewhere. But if you'd like an honest breakfast with no frills in a cheerful, clean atmosphere then this is the place. read more

Find somewhere else to eat breakfast. This place looked popular with the locals (parking lot was full) but the food was just bad. Everything was the cheapest quality and prepared without any skill or care. The coffee was weak, even by diner standards, and a cheap brand to begin with. My waffle was barely toasted, even though I asked for extra crispy, and it was smothered in some vile cheap margarine. The bacon and sausage were cheap and greasy, the toast was cheap and soggy with margarine, and the home-fried potatatos were just thrown together and charred in a pan. We left it on the plate and skipped breakfast that day. read more
