I find it a little on the run down side and the food mediocre but it is popular and has a good following of old timers. it seems to be a gold mine but why evades me. the food is o.k. not bad not great but it has been a staple in this town longer than I've been here. I've only been here 20 years and most that go here have been here longer than that. So my opinion is only that of a rookie in this establishment. It certainly is a popular place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They do have great home made pies. They also have waitress's that have been there as long as I've been here so they do have quite a following. I know some people that won't go anywhere else for breakfast. Typical diner lower quality food so if that is what you want then this place works. Lots of cheap options. Better off sticking to simple menu items like breakfast, burgers, etc. Anything else comes with fake mashed potatoes and canned veggies. Friend of mine always gets the fish and chips. The Village Grill is a great place to have Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. We absolutely love their Ranch Dressing and my family loves the Fish and Chips and the Tartar sauce is house made. They have a variety of special everyday and price is very reasonable. Their French Onion Soup and Cream of Broccoli is so very delicious. If you like Cornbread then definitely order this item. This place is the cats meow. The crew is very nice and very professional. The food is super delicious. The Bonanza Triple Melt is so good I probably gained 20 pounds eating them. Our first visit to the Village Grill and it was pleasant. Older building and decor, but friendly and efficient staff. It happens to be Lent and they were the only restaurant in town open at 3 pm serving fried fish. I ordered the fried fish (cod) which came with fries, garlic toast, and coleslaw (I substituted fruit medley- grapes, pineapple and different types of melon for the coleslaw). My meal was as good as any other fried cod with fries can be. The fish and fries were hot and crispy like I like them. My daughter ordered the appetizer chicken quesadilla (with cheese and chicken only) and it came with salsa and sour cream on the side. My daughter enjoyed the quesadilla, it was large enough to be an entree and very filling. I gave 4 stars because our 2 meals cost me about $24 without tip and I thought that was kind of expensive for this area. read more

Been here a few times and finally remembered to write a review. This place is a freakin' bargain. They have good homey food and lots of it. Make sure you ask for the garlic toast - whether it comes with your meal or not. I always do. The decor is ancient and it's like stepping back in time to a cross between an outdated diner and my mom's kitchen, but the service is always good, the wait staff is super attentive, orders come quickly and are correct, and the food is great! Good omelets, pot roast, tuna melt, etc. It's like always having a home-cooked meal, no matter what you order. The best part is, if you're with a slow eater, there seems to be an endless supply to corny joke books all written by some old guy who has had way too much time observing the ways of the world. read more

Wow! Sat quickly ! Ann the waitress was right there to take our drink orders. Gave us a few to check out the menu. I ordered the Belgium waffle and really wanted strawberries but hate the gel ones. The seasoned fries were delicious, and the chicken noodle soup was clearly homemade. Portions were generous and certainly worth the money. Where to begin?? I didn't really have a great opinion of the place upon driving up to it. There was some shady looking guy in the patio area playing some really loud, crappy music..I figured maybe it was because they were only open for another hour and he was trying to drive away customers?? I ordered a steak...Medium Rare!! What I got was something steak sized, but almost the thickness of lunch meat and it was well done. Booo!! Basically anything over Med. Rare is just ruined.,...I ate the salad, which was obviously a bagged salad mix with some croutons thrown on top and the potato which had a gigantic topping of margarine and sour cream on top that actually eclipsed the potato. I told them that I couldn't eat the steak because it was overcooked and they asked if I wanted another steak or if I wanted something else. I said no, First because we were in kind of a rush and I didn't feel like waiting and secondly because they convinced me that I didn't want to try anything else they had to offer here. They still charged Me 7.00 for their mistake, Awesome. Never coming back to this Sh*thole diner again that is for sure. Another thing that annoyed me here was that they have these little signs on the tables saying they will give you water upon request because of the severe drought..okay, fair enough., However, when they give you water, it is in a giant cup that is almost impossible to drink it all, especially when you are on a road trip...And I went to use the bathroom before leaving to find this person cleaning the bathroom,running the faucet and wasting water just to clean the counter top and just let the water run for no good reason, This disgusted me. If I ever find Myself in this place again, I will avoid this restaurant like the plague. read more

Another disappointing restaurant. Came here for dinner tonight with my mother and my son. We got sat and ordered our drinks looked at the menu then ordered. It was busy but most of everyone had food. We ordered our food. I ordered chicken fried steak my mom ordered chicken strips and we ordered a plain cheeseburger for my son. All the meals came with French fries and my mom and I got salads. We got our salads right away. Basic salads from a bag I'm assuming then dressing on the side. We finished our salads and waited patiently for our food our waitress came by after 30 minutes and said there's a couple tickets ahead of you then yours will be up we said okay. Finally after an hour of waiting I called the waitress over and asked if she could check on our food. She checked on our food came back and told us he was going to start it in 2 minutes at this point we are starving and have an angry toddler we told her to cancel everything and we got up and left. Can't even tell if the food was worth the wait or not. read more

Can't say how the food is because we left before ordering but the customer service was awful. I went there with my husband, 3 kids and my parents. We ordered drinks and then the waiter never came back except once to tell us he couldn't take our order because he had to go to the other side of the restaurant for something else and would be right back. Then he never came back. Meanwhile my baby started getting fussy from sitting there for 30 min. There was another family at a table close to ours who said they hadn't been helped in a while either. Finally someone came by and we asked for the check for our sodas and they said to not worry about it. And then we left. We will not be back. Just finished a very disappointing dinner here. I tried to overlook the mess as you walk in, like someone's living room that hasn't been picked up and vacuumed for awhile. Then the food-omg! I ordered liver and onions with mashed potatoes and beef gravy. I don't know what kind of gravy it was, no color, no taste. The piece of garlic toast almost had some color to it. Basically, it was a piece of barely warmed dry bread. The veggies- the worst! I hate soggy, limp canned green beans. Why bother? My fiancé ordered the special, ribeye, medium rare. How do they get liver and ribeye steaks soooo thin? The steak had absolutely NO seasoning! Served cold, most of it was medium, except for a hunk that was attached that was rare, or not cooked. I think if we'd met the cook, we'd have slapped him. No pride in anything and the owners let them serve food this way? Never going back. Save your money and eat a bad meal at home. read more

My wife and I used to go here whenever we would be in Tehachapi but the last few times have at best been okay, yesterday we stopped in and she got a hamburger which was okay and I got a chicken fried steak. The meal was pathetic, salad had brown greens, the potatoes were from a box (probably), and the steak was from the freezer and dropped in fryer, they brought a knife to cut it, one could cut it with a spoon. The meal came with vegetables that had been in a pot for probably hours if not days, the only good item was the garlic bread. I usually don't complain as they are cooking my food but won't be returning for a while. Come on folks this is your business take some pride. read more

My server wrote the order right but failed to check before serving. Sandwich was all wrong. The fries were cold after waiting for 15mins. I asked for fresh and waited another 15mins. She did not offer to fill my cup and bring my ranch dressing. I had to get it myself:( When it came time to pay the bill another server was irritated with me because I waited my turn to pay it. We stopped here for lunch as we always do. I ordered a classic cheese burger with a salad. The burger was average. The salad was not good and flavorless. The salad must have been sitting for sometime in the fridge. Some of the lettuce was browning. The carrots were old and had no crunch. My husbands French fries were not very good either. I guess this will be the last time we stop on our way through. Sorry, but just not the level of quality that you want to eat. California is about as close to the source of veggies you can get. This was the worst service I've ever had at any restaurant. Our server Josiah was nice at first, but you could tell he was overwhelmed with the three tables he was serving. I got a regular burger and fries which was good nothing to complain about but he forgot my fries. I ordered a side of toast and he never brought that out. My uncle ordered a beer and our server said "I'm sorry I dropped ice cream on the cup I hope you don't mind" which we wouldn't have minded if the it wasn't all crusty like the ice cream was sitting on it and the cup was just dirty.... we couldn't have just gotten a clean one? I understand we all forget but this was a little excessive. So after we ate our food we asked for the bill to be split and he was gone for about ten mins so we told him it's ok that we will just pay the whole tab so he won't have to split it. My family and myself went to the front where the register was at and our server passed us to another server so he seemed more knowledgeable about the menu so we asked him if it wasn't to much trouble that he could split the bill for us. He then went back and gave the ticket to the server and you can tell that he was very frustrated with us. You could tell our server talking to the other guy and he was clearly upset and Talking bad about us. I went over to our server and asked to speak with him and as we walked towards me he then stuck up his hand and said NO I DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS and walked away. I was so shocked he acted like that I then asked to speak with a manager and a lady I don't remember her name but was very sweet and apologized for him but let me know there was no manager at the time. I told her there was no reason for him to speak like that and put his hand up at me . At the end of everything she split the check and even gave us a 10% discount which she didn't have to but was very kind to do. This place wasn't bad but I wouldn't go back to eat here . read more
