They certainly got the name right! This place has a positively giant collection of vintage skin mags, so if that's your thing, this is your place. They seem to focus on vintage media in general, with a ton of records, VHS tapes, and copies of old local rags. Of course, they also have the general trappings of a vintage store: a small and curious selection of clothing, posters, books, art and more. One thing really stood out for me. The vintage suitcases filled with hundreds of old, abandoned snapshots and family photos. Called "Instant Relatives", they're sold at 50 cents a pop, and I could browse them for hours. I just found the collection so intriguing. There's no rhyme or reason to what's included, it's just other people's forgotten memories of forgotten relatives. I found it both beautiful and sad. Anyhow, that's enough of me getting all poetic about a vintage store. But I'll say it: SMUT is worth a visit. read more

This was definitely an interesting shop. Like a previous reviewer stated, I didn't really find anything that I really wanted. I did enjoy browsing their selection of fur coats (although it was close to 90 degrees out, so I didn't feel like trying any on). The dressing room looked creative and cute with the mirrors lined along the walls. The taxidermic heads on the wall gave this place a cozy, warm feeling. And like most reviewers said, yes, this is your place to get vintage playboy mags if that is what you are in to! SMUT is still a great place for fun little trinkets and gift ideas for folks who are usually hard-to-buy-for, but the recent renovation and expansion of the place seems to be kinda wasted on more space for used records. And besides the occasional 1950s instructional record, I've never found anything really remarkable in that selection despite hours of digging. In a city with almost three dozen other record stores, surely it's hard to be a unique record store. But fortunately for SMUT, this is not really a record store, but a store with some records. Everything else about the store is just great! Sadly, last time I visited, I was subjected to the loud blaring of music that was just too hard for me to bear. It sounded like an ungodly cross of some X-Games soundtrack snowboard-core with some of that fake Spirit of '77 shit that's preferred by some born-after-'77 weasel with sideburns, pompadour, and a bowling shirt with flames on it (jeez...do I generalize much?). Y'know...the kinda person who's only two good records might be "Apocalypse Dudes" by Turbonegro and the first Descendents album (probably!). Or maybe the kinda anus-for-ears that thinks "Raw Power" is an infinitely better Stooges album than "Funhouse"...or the kinda guy that thinks "My War" is the best Black Flag album (okay...certainly!), and still fondly recalls the Voodoo Glow Skulls as a decade-best (but these people are always so buffoonish, though!). So, from now on, whenever I'm in your town, I will be calling ahead to make sure that a female voice picks up the phone. Then I know that I will be flipping through old postcards and campaign buttons to the more soothing sounds of Patsy Cline or Petula Clark. ON EDIT (Feb 2, 09): I've been informed that the employee who was cranking the submediocre snowboardcore no longer works there. I go here for the records. I like the organization, which is true to form. Newly received items are put in a special zone, so if you visit often you can start there for easy pickin'. Prices are pretty reasonable, and I know it's just a matter of time before some vintage item jumps into my arms and we go home together. It might be an old book about medicine or history in its wild inaccuracies. It might be a red coaches jacket. Maybe even a pair of shoes. Ugh. read more

As an avid postcard writer and enthusiast this place is absolutely on the TOP of my list! While there are bunch of other shops that sell vintage postcards, i find that this place consistently always has the widest selection of UNUSED postcards...at an acceptable price to boot! Since i commit the sacrilege of sending these pristine vintage cards through the mail, i really appreciate the quality and extremely wide variety of the selection. They also have a lot of other small ephemera and randomness that may seem useless to some but is pure magic to me! Patches from the 50s 60s and 70s from random people's bowling leagues, Garbage Pail Kids stickers, matchbooks, vintage found photographs, old girly mags...the thing to remember is that nothing in the whole store is particularly valuable, but to a craphound like myself, it is sheer vintage heaven. read more

Due to a small child, I usually get about 8 minutes per visit to SMUT. Last week wanted to find a cool photo for a little square frame. SMUT has boxes of great old photos. And so I found a perfect vintage square format black and white night shot of a deer right before a dash for some woods that were lit up in a silhouette by some old flash that I'm sure they sell here. I got two porcelain cups here that I think are my favorite pieces of dishware (and fit under my espresso maker) and picked up some vintage photo postcards of Disneyland when it was first built. IItsy bitsy teenie weenie tiny little shop right off Burnside. Some cute stuff, but pretty much just run of the mill junky vintage. I have to admit that I was not able to spend much time perusing the CDs or vinyl selection, since my wife and kid were waiting outside (there's literally no room for a stroller in the store)! I loved this little vintage shop!!! It was crammed full of awesomeness. They have a great vinyl selection for a vintage shop. Lots of funky pins and patches to choose from. We love SMUT!! There are all sorts of treasures to investigate, a cool selection of typewriters, great CDs, records, & paperbacks. Today I scored a mint-condition plaid shirt-jac for Owen's back-to-school wear (for a walloping $10.00 I might add)...I also scored an enormous crock for all our kitchen tools. While this may not be the sexiest of purchases, for me it reigns supreme! We live in an old house with an unbelievable lack of drawers, storage or closets. I refuse to go to an over-priced kitchen mecca with items made in China, & you won't catch me in a Drawers-R-Us sort of super store. So, this little goodie is a find. Perhaps some of you won't find such delight in this sort of thing, but SMUT did right by us! We will be back searching for more treasures! I have my eye on a few other items... read more

I couldn't find anything I really wanted, only things that made my money excretion glands feel dully stimulated. SMUT is the best thrift store in PDX, hands-down. The prices are better than at Red Light or Buffalo (their boot selection in particular stands out), and they have knick-knacks that manage to be interesting without being kitschy. The salespeople are friendly, the selection changes frequently. Much higher overall quality than other consignment/resale shops, and honestly priced. I don't know about you, but I get kind of pissed off thinking about the markup that pickers put on crap from The Bins. The pickers at SMUT have taste and the decency not to gouge their customers. I'd go here more often if it were closer to my house. read more

A very tiny shop with a heart of gold. You have to wonder how they can survive in such a tiny space, but I've scored good records there 3 times and they were more reasonable than most record stores. So this place is super cool! I don't really know how to describe it except for it's really eclectic vintage shop. They have old records and magazines and iron on ones and little trinkets and furniture and mirrors and artwork and I could go on. There's so many little things in there and it's just a little treasure chest. Some of the items are really priced appropriately I think, and some of them are a little overpriced. But they are all vintage and antique so I am not an expert on that, and who knows how they really should be priced. What's awesome is that the girl that was working there was super sweet and nice and really wanted to help you find whatever you need it, and was really apologetic when the person in mind in front of me was taking forever. This hip little shop is basically a thrift store comprised of vintage things. The prices are fair and affordable (unlike a lot of vintage stores) and they had some interesting vintage treasures. Although I'm from outta town, I travel to Portland occasionally and get my hair cut down the street from SMUT and always feel the need to stop in and see what they have. The owner (I assume) is always very friendly and leaves you free to roam without following you around and making you feel hurried. I spent a REALLY long time looking at the collection of old photos and buttons they have and just enjoyed browsing. I got a couple cool things each time I was there and would love to return anytime I'm in the area. I didn't give it five stars because I wish they had more of a mix of items. I feel like it could be filled more since they expanded. Use the space and expand into more areas of vintage maybe. Otherwise, very cool and will still return! read more

Tons of great inexpensive things here. I loved the large selection of vintage Playboys, Penthouse, etc. As well as the clothing selection, jewelry, buttons. Got a great deal on a vintage army jacket from the 50's in their $5 bin. Also open a little on the later side compared to other stores I visited in Portland. Very friendly staff. Located in a neighborhood with lots of great food around as well. I would most likely return here on another visit. read more
