I had a poor experience here because I went in with my new rescue dog for a general checkup and when I mentioned her itchy skin in areas they changed it to an illness visit which is more expensive. They then checked her anal glands which was an extra $130 without informing me prior. Then they recommended a shot for her itchy skin for $150 and cleansing wipes for $30 which I said no to. It was all done with little to no information given without me prying answers to questions out of them. As a new dog owner I'm not sure what to ask and not sure how to navigate caring for a dog and they not only didn't help they felt deceptive. The experience with booking and follow up is very good. Nice that you can book online, they text ample reminders, follow up to ask how the service was, and when I spoke to a manager about my poor experience he handled it very well. It was just the experience at the actual facility that was the problem. The tech that came in before the vet was awkward and quiet and had no answers to anything. 2 reasons for 1 star -- Last year, my dog has a cancerous lump on his side that needed to be removed. This place had us conduct multiple visits before surgery. All visits and the surgery cost me over $3k. My poor dog had a scar the size of a ruler for a lump that was the size of quarter. Seemed extreme and insanely expensive. Dealing with the front desk staff was a nightmare and I had to fight to get my dog into the surgeon within a reasonable amount of time. If I hadn't fought this they were perfectly fine seeing him for surgery a month later. And this was for a lump that grew into the size of quarter in less than 5 days. The whole experience was baffling. I decided to return to this place for my dog's annual exam and vaccines due to proximity. Just tried taking my dog in for the routine annual exam along with his shots and they were asking for $600 total. Luckily they showed me the costs before jumping in to conduct the work. Last year, we did the same round of shots and the exam here and it was $325. I'm now needing to find a more affordable option. This clinic shows up at #1 on Yelp for "low cost vet in Chicago". Very wrong. Seems like a business looking to make money rather than help people take care of their animals at an affordable rate. They did call me when we were running 5 minutes late just to make sure we were on our way and that they would be able to make a profit off of us today. What an eye roll. We won't be returning. I'm convinced the majority of these positive reviews are fake. This place routinely overcharged me for services. I compared the prices I was charged to a relative who goes to them for the same procedures and I was charged more than 25% more for reasons that were never explained to me by their rude receptionist staff. There is no transparency in the pricing here. My senior baby who is struggling with health issues concerning possibly cancerous masses in her body got an ultrasound here recently (at an estimate of $676- over $1,000.) Dr. Miller is dismissive, cold, and condescending. She would blow off my questions about my dog's health and care, even after my 13-year-old started having massive health and breathing issues. She would forget to send me test results and blame it on their automated system. She would recommend expensive treatment after expensive treatment with no real explanation as to how the treatment could help my baby or at least give us some type of answer as to what was going on with her. Any suggestions that have been helpful I have suggested to her myself. That's not the way this is supposed to work, especially when you're charging almost $400 per visit. A tech here berated me for not wanting my dog sedated for what should have been a basic procedure. He said because she was so "stressed" she swallowed a lot of air and was now at risk for bloat, and suggested that this was because I didn't let them sedate her (even after I explained to them that my baby hasn't responded well to sedation in the past.) How does an experienced veterinary team not know how to do something as basic as an ultrasound without exposing a dog to a deadly condition? I recently received the ultrasound results, but have not gotten one call from the uncaring Dr. Miller concerning what they say. So for almost $700, I got a potentially bloated dog and ultrasound results that I now have to Google to understand. I'm terrified that my baby (whom I've raised since she was 6 months old) is dying and this place could care less. They are very disorganized and going in circles getting basic medicine for my cat. They told me my cat needed to take gabapentin to have a visit at the office, but the pharmacy they work with is disorganized and clearly designed to just overcharge clients. Dr Silverman is a awesome veterinarian. My cat Casper was a rescue and he had partially paralysis in his hind legs and was found outside by animal control. He had done alot of damage to his private area from dragging his hind end thru the rock,dirt,garbage, and whatever else was outside. When I got casper his private parts were not recognizable and he couldn't walk or use his back legs at all. I had taken him to several vets and specialists he even had stem cell therapy and nothing helped. Dr Silverman has completely healed his private area. He is able to pee a little on his own now and with the laser therapy has began to have feeling in his back legs and even take a few steps. Anytime ive had a emergency with Casper they have taken him right in. I will never use another vet and all my rescue cats will be seeing him. read more

Do not go here. These crooks charged us over $600 for a routine annual checkup for a completely healthy indoor cat that they had seen a year earlier. Furthermore, we brought her in at 9am and after calling 6 hours later to see if she was still alive, she still hadn't been seen. After 45 minutes, we called again and she was done. Obviously, she had been forgotten. I'm happy to pay extra to support local businesses, but this is borderline criminal. Unless you want your animal to be tortured needlessly and charged an arm and a leg for it, I would not recommend this business. read more

I was just on yelp trying to get an idea of how much a procedure would cost and saw that i never wrote a review of this place. We started going here when it first opened because it was the closest vet to our home. It was fine, we laughed about the furniture being the outside super uncomfortable patio furniture that we got as Costco. I never had a problem with the care though, the worst part of the experience is the lobby...it's very tight so if you have a reactive pet you are just hoping there's not an animal right inside the door that you won't be able to get through to get to a private room. The furniture was later upgraded, and we noticed that every procedure started coming with a warning about how much it would cost so they must have experienced some unhappy customers. Also, the front desk is a little lacking in customer facing skills... The reason we stopped going was because our dog got an advanced cancer diagnosis. My husband said that he mentioned the lump not feeling like the other fatty tumors he had but nobody tested it. Our dog had a lot of fatty tumors, so I actually have no issue with this. It's that when he was diagnosed, we were prescribed a steroid to hopefully help. Being in shock we gave the dog the medication without doing to normal "internet doctoring" we'd normally do. He quickly because very, very ill and a quick google search said that we should not have given him steroids right away because of the arthritis meds he was one...it's a very bad combination. It's that pharmacy 101? To look at reactions of two drugs prescribed by the same clinic? Anyway, the dog would have died soon anyway, but i'm a bit resentful that he suffered more than he needed to because of it. We ended up going to Boulevard Vet on Armitage and expected it to be super expensive because its a nice facility (we also got excellent care when dog #2 got cancer) but it ended up being the same. BEWARE!!! I took my 8 year old boxer to this vet because I suspected she'd poked herself in the eye which cause a little red bump and winking. I told the vet this, he then began to tell me it could be a number of things fro a tumor behind the brain putting pressure on the eye to the possibility of my baby girl having to have her eye removed all together and if he were me he'd have a pressure test in addition to another test to rule these things out so she wouldn't loose her eye... (SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RED FLAG) He was using scare tactics on me to get me to agree to the tests for her, of course I did because I love my dog. He took my dog back to preform the test (ANOTHER RED FLAG) he did none of the testing in front of me so I have no idea what he really did to her. He brings her back saying everything is fine with her eye and I was right it was more than likely the poke in the eye which he'd assume is healing form the inside out and these things some times looks worse before looking better he'd give me some eye drops for her, then sold me some canned dog food preaching they were the cheapest to buy from over pet stores or chewy... (AGAIN ANOTHER RED FLAG TRYING TO PAD THE BILL) We left AFTER PAYING $200 FOR THE FOOD VISIT TESTS AND DROPS, thinking we'd be fine with the drops, only to get home and discover they were only eye lubricant... just water for her eye... ANOTHER RED FLAG WAS the vet checking in days after multiple times, I assume because he knew the dogs eye was not fine and was trying to bait us back in. BECAUSE HER EYE WAS NOT FINE! We followed up with her primary care vet who looked at Xena and deduced with quickness she had an eye ulcer, which is caused by blunt trauma to the eye... like when she got poked in the eye..... Her primary vet then prescribed a medicated drop to repair the eye..... BEWARE OF THIS VET, THEY ARE A SCAM, THEY WILL PREY ON YOUR CONCERN FOR YOUR DOG, EXPLOIT THIS AND YOU FOR CASH AND NOT HELP THE DOG. I called them back after consulting with my vet, asking could they refund or exchange the drops they'd given me as I felt taken advantage of. I was told NO and treated poorly over the phone. I want nothing to do with this place and feel like they swindled me for cash, without any concern for my dog. You'd think after 2 hours in their office and $200 spent this would not be the review I am writing, do yourself a favor and AVOID THIS PLACE!!!! My dog was stung by a bee and showing signs of a severe allergic reaction. Without having a car, and being in a panic, I figured the fastest way I could get my dog medical attention would be by carrying him to the nearest vet. I start to tell the front desk I think my dog is having an allergic reaction, only for the receptionist to lean over her desk, glance at my dog wrapped in my arms, and say "we have no appointments available, and it looks like he's is breathing okay". She did not try to ask anyone else, a tech, a vet, someone with the medical credentials to be making those types of calls on if my dog was breathing properly or not. I found it to be incredibly cruel and insensitive, not to mention inappropriate and unprofessional that the receptionist did not even attempt to talk to a doctor. Thank GOD I got my dog to another vet on time, as he was diagnosed in anaphylactic shock. I am incredibly appalled by the experience I had with the front desk as this was clearly a very time sensitive and urgent situation. Appointments don't matter, the lives of animals do. We've been through two diagnoses with malignant tumors and two surgeries with our younger dog and the aches and pains and other challenges of our older boy, who is 15. I adjusted the review for cost and for organization. Prior to moving to the neighborhood, we've paid far less for preventive visits than we do here, although the surgery costs were what I expected. After adopting our pup in the burbs and having his initial evaluation, neutering, and shots done there, we decided we wanted something closer to home. Thanks to a Facebook page for our community and lots of recommendations, we decided on Village West Vet. We have been there twice for wellness visits and once for a scare and each visit was handled meticulously. Dr. Silverman and Dr. Arrigo are fantastic. I took my cat in for his annual check up and to have a lump re-checked. Dr. Silverman is always so good with my rather shy cat and goes the extra mile to make us both feel comfortable with the care he provides. He was also great on explaining steps that could be taken to definitively identify what the large lump on my cat. He took samples of fluid from the lump and was able to view the cells in office. ( vs send out to a lab) The next morning I received an email from Dr. Silverman letting me know there were no suspicious cells in the sample and my Theodore is fine. The time stamp on the email was after 11:30pm on the evening of my visit! Once again, Dr.Silverman goes above and beyond for both me and my much loved cat. read more

Dr. Silverman and his team are absolutely wonderful. In the past year I moved up to Chicago from Florida and had visited another vet office first, but wasn't impressed. When my 5 year old cat (who has had both of his hips replaced over the past couple of years) began to limp again, I started to fret. I wanted to go to a vet that was (a) nearby, (b) clean, and (c) reputable. Village West went above and beyond. The rooms were spotless, including the waiting area. And they have benches so I could put my cat's box up next to me while we waiting. The staff managed to get me an appointment for the same day, then remembered me when I showed up, and were happy to hear back when I called to check in (which they encouraged afterward). Dr. Silverman was thorough, went through my cat's records, asked a lot of questions, had done the hip replacement surgery before on another cat, and did a complete evaluation without X-rays. He was able to tell me exactly what is wrong, how to help him, and what needs to be done if plan A didn't work. My first visit was two weeks ago. The same day they sent me an email about a pet website that helps keep track of all my cat's medical history. The next day they called me to see how he was doing. Today I received a card in the mail welcoming me to the "family" and wishing my cat and I the best. For the visit, anti-inflammatories, and joint supplements, I paid $100.00. Village West is by far the best vet I've ever been to. My cat Nala is very squeemish and they were able to give her an exam and vaccinations with no problem and helped her stay calm throughout the process. My dog Banjo has serious fear and anxiety of other dogs and goes crazy when he sees another dog, barking and pulling on the leash. This makes going to the vet a really traumatic experience for him (and honestly for me too) But the folks at Village west were so accommodating and gave us a private room to wait in so that he was able to stay calm. Usually bringing him to the vet I leave feeling embarrassed and upset about his behavior, but they were so understanding and did not make me feel at all guilty for his reactivity and did their best to help the visit go smoothly. Moved to the area, so decided to switch vets. Saw Dr. Miller over the summer for a check up. She and the vet tech were great. More recently, my dog got sick. Swollen face and breathing issues, so brought him in to see Dr. Bruce. He thought it might be an allergic reaction so gave him a steroid shot, which didn't work. He thought maybe it was caused by a bug bite. But sent me home with more steroids with instructions to monitor. Makes sense. The swelling did not improve & breathing got increasingly worse. Four days later, my dog was no longer able to walk up the stairs so back he went. This time they did a full work up (blood tests, x rays, etc). Dr. Bruce warned me if there's not something that he can clearly see that's causing the problem, the next step would be to take him to a specialist/hospital. Fair. After all the tests, he couldn't come to a conclusion. Again, he brought up bug bite. I'm not vet. I don't need to be a vet to know at this point this wasn't a fucking bug bite. He did see fluid in his chest which he said he'd remove, but then wasn't able to for whatever reason. Two days later I brought my dog to Premier (see my review for them). The vet and vet tech asked all the right questions. None of these questions were asked at Village West. They were able to drain 1.5 liters from my dog's chest which seemed to give him immense relief, and was irked that Dr Bruce didn't drain his chest as he said he would and my dog had to suffer for 2 more days. My dog ended up having to go to a cardiologist and ultimately they found an inoperable heart tumor.  A couple weeks later, it became time to start planning for euthanasia. I call VW to ask them for pricing and options (in tears obviously). The front desk person transferred me to Peter who told me he would have to verify pricing and call me back in a few minutes. Ok, no worries. This was around noon. 4pm rolled around, still haven't heard from Peter, so called back. Keep in mind I told Peter I was thinking it would be best to make the appointment the next day based on my dog's condition. After I told the person who answered the phone that I was calling to follow up on euthanasia options and an appt, she said Peter left for the day. My response was simply, "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?" I then called My Vet in Bucktown (my old vet). They were sympathetic and so great, even though they weren't the ones who treated my dog in this situation. As my dog's condition slowly got worse, it was My Vet who I called for insight and advice, not VW. Dr. Jennifer from My Vet called me back personally to explain the situation and talk me through next steps/options. Also, in case anyone needs pricing - My Vet charges approximately $100-150 less for euthanasia services. After 2 vet, a hospital and cardiologist visit, I've come to the conclusion that I won't be bringing my next pet to Village West for a number of reasons. In hindsight, I feel Dr. Bruce should've done the full work up the first time we visited after the steroid shot didn't work. I wish Dr. Bruce asked all the questions that Premier did so he'd have a better understanding of the history of the situation, as I get that at that point it was a guessing game. I also wish he would've been more concerned about the breathing issue the FIRST time as that was a huge clue as to what the ultimate issue was. The vet at Premier was able to drain 1.5 liters (that's almost a 2 liter bottle of soda to put it in perspective) and Dr. Bruce wasn't able to get anything out? After speaking with both the vets at Premier and My Vet, I simply felt they were more knowledgeable by the questions they asked, hypothesis they provided, and advice they gave. I got none of that from Dr. Bruce, even though he was a very nice guy, just not the vet for me. Two and a half stars (would probably be closer to 3 if not for Peter) for a clean office, and the fact that they were very accommodating by squeezing me in for an appt when the swelling started. All the front desk and vet techs were also very nice. Dr. Miller also seemed pretty knowledgeable (kinda wondered how it would have differed had she seen my dog for this issue). Their pricing (other than euthanasia) was pretty much on par with other city vets and felt was very reasonable. I think this is a good vet if you need routine services - spaying/neutering, check ups, vaccinations, etc. But for any special needs, I would go elsewhere. My next pup will go back to MyVet. In response to Bruce: Not sure how unusual it was as 1. a quick google search listed all of the symptoms my dog had when researching heart issues and 2.The Premier vet concluded it was heart or cancer just by asking more thorough questions. Since you took the time to passive aggressively respond, pretty disappointed there was no apology on Peter's behalf. That's pretty much all you need to know about this place. read more

I've reviewed this place before but I am constantly impressed with Village West. I have a special needs kitty, he is FIV+, has no teeth, suffers from allergies and most recently had a serious eye problem. I have seen different doctors over the years here; each understanding and helpful with his conditions. Most recently, we brought our guy in for an eye problem, potentially being a tumor. His eye was so swollen that we had to get it down immediately before something serious could happen. I was obviously very upset with the diagnosis but the doctor helped us work through multiple options and referred us to a specialist to get a second opinion. The doctor was very upfront that a specialist could be expensive and I appreciated that heads up; we decided to do it anyway. While we waited for our specialist appointment, we brought him back to Village West Vet just to make sure his pain was under control. They even helped us spot different locations to get his medications cheaper. In the end, we learned that he did not have a tumor and in fact, has a birth defect. My guy probably won't be able to see out of that eye in the future, but he's overall safe and I have both Village West and the specialist to thank for that. read more

The short review: We love, love, love Village West Vet. Dr. Silverman provides the absolute best gold standard of care. We had been to four different vets in Chicago before finding Dr. Silverman and now we won't trust our precious puppers with anyone else. The long review: our older dog was rapidly losing weight and lost almost of his fur over the course of a year. Our previous vet gave him a half-hearted once-over, ran a couple of blood tests, and then basically said "meh, this is just aging." We knew that could not be right - it was clear something was wrong. We moved last year and found Village West Vet through a google search of nearby vets. At our very first appointment, Dr. Silverman asked a ton of questions, did a thorough exam of our pup and said "I think he has cushings." After a couple rounds of tests, it was confirmed. It is a horrible diagnosis, but it was such a relief to know what was going on with him. And most importantly, Dr. Silverman was able to put him on medication that dramatically improved his quality of life (and our quality of life, because no one wants to see their dog suffer) for his remaining months. We sadly lost our dog this summer, and Dr. Silverman was extremely kind, compassionate, and informative throughout the horrible ordeal. We recently got a new puppy and of course we would not take him to anyone but Dr. Silverman. He has continued his amazing care for our little guy. He always thoroughly explains what's going on with our pup, what services he recommends, and answers all of my questions. And the office does provide cost estimates for services so you know what to expect financially from each visit. I am so grateful to Dr. Silverman and everyone at Village West Vet - it gives me such peace of mind to know that our dog receives the best possible care and I thank my lucky stars that we found them. read more

Came for the second time-my cat needed his vaccinations. Both times I wanted more than 20 minutes which I think is just rude. Seems like the vet is overbooking. There's blood on the ground from another pet yet no one has bothered to clean it up and people keep walking through it. Maybe I've just come at very busy times but I'd think that village west would learn how to better manage their schedule. That being said-the vets are nice but for vaccines to take an hour? My first visit here. They were very loving to my dog. He was very nervous and shaking when he was placed in the table but the doctors technician hugged and pet him thru the whole process. Had him turn into putty by the end of the visit. The vet provided lots of good info and took her time checking my boy. Had a great experience. Also the price was fair for the visit. The office space is clean and well kept, the reception staff are helpful, the techs are helpful, the Vets are very knowledgeable, and they'll take time to listen to you and answer all your questions. The standard office visit cost is very much in line or a bit cheaper than other places I've been in Chicago, as are the fees for various tests and procedures. They will offer you the gamut of options, but I've never once felt like I'm trying to be upsold on something I don't need. I've had them go as far as to explain to me the difference between X and Y tests, but then tell me that given my dog's situation, they don't feel the more expensive test is necessary. Which in my experience is rare. Even with other vet offices that have great ratings, the negative reviews I see are usually centered around the vet being pushy with suggesting a specific treatment or service. I'll try my best to keep this short... I LOVE Village west. When I moved to the city I searched high and low for a decent vet. I just wanted a clean place with reasonable prices, and caring vets who weren't anti-RAW feeding. I took one of my dogs here for his annual check up, and I was so happy with my experience and with Dr. Silverman, I brought my other dog back for her check up too! I recently had a tail injury emergency with one of my dogs. I frantically called VWV and the receptionist calmly talked to me and talked me through what to do. I saw Dr. Kushner and she couldn't be more friendly, patient and understanding. She did everything she could to keep me calm and to try to do the minimum instead of jumping ahead and telling me I absolutely need to do something drastic like many vets do. In the end, Gunther did need his tail amputated due to the severity of the damage. But if it weren't for Dr. Kushner's kind and caring personality, and her positivity, it would have been so much harder. Thank you Dr. Kushner & Dr. Silverman! It's nice to have a trusted veterinary when you have three geriatric dogs--they are our fur babies, the OGs, before our human baby after all. Much like healthy young adults who don't have a designated primary physician that they see (let's admit that most of us are just bringing ourselves to urgent care centers when a health concern arises), I never bothered to establish a relationship with good pet doctors. My young pups didn't need them back then except for the annual rabies shot and what not. Fast forward to now, all of our dogs are heading into their teens, and it has been a challenging medical transition. We came across Village West Veterinary when we moved into the neighborhood, and we've decided to stick with them since. What I like about this place is how personable the staff is. They won't just take your money and run. We are frequent flyers here, and VWV has never once failed to follow up on how our dogs are doing the day after. Dealing with ill and frail pets can be tough and isolating, but VWV takes a minute out of their day to show that they care and that means a lot. The doctors here also seem to be very thorough in their practice as well--reading and looking into the medical history like good vets do. read more

l sent a message early this morning and the owner was nice enough to respond quickly, They squeeze me in in lieu of my emergency and they looked at my Cat and concurred what l though he had, a UTI. the vet clinic DID NOT smell like dog or cat which is a great thing, the receptionist was quick and courteous and Dr Monica was simply the best. She was patient, sweet and knowledgeable. She answered all my questions and was through and her assistant help me administer Ponzies first antibiotics dosis. ponzie has taken her second round of meds tonight and l honestly feel he is feeling better. no more howling. l will be able to sleep tonight knowing he will be better soon. read more
