What keeps bringing us back is not just the wine, although there is certainly plenty to enjoy there. This visit included a flight, a glass of Starlight White, another newer red offering, and the small bites that have become one of my favorite parts of the experience. Fresh bread, cheeses, olives, dipping sauces, hummus, and even a couple of truffles create the kind of simple but thoughtful pairing that encourages you to slow down and stay awhile. What stands out most, though, is the authenticity of the place. During this visit we once again had the opportunity to spend some time with Lee, whose warmth and hospitality seem to reflect everything this winery is about. Nothing feels rushed, overly commercial, or manufactured. It feels genuine. On this particular Saturday, we sat outside overlooking the grounds of Kings Mountain Golf Course, enjoying a break from the routine and watching golfers make their way through the course. There was no special event, no live music, and no grand occasion. It was simply a relaxing afternoon, and somehow that made it even better. There are plenty of wineries where you can have a tasting. There are far fewer places where you leave feeling refreshed, welcomed, and already looking forward to your next visit. Vin de Matrix continues to be one of those places for us, and it remains well worth the drive from Pittsburgh.

This review is for the Latrobe location…read more While visiting our aunt in Latrobe, we had dinner at Carmine's Pizza & Pasta and noticed some interesting bottles behind the bar. We were curious and asked the staff about them. She told us they were from Rusty Musket Distilling. She also mentioned that the distillery was located on the same street so we quickly checked the map. We found out they're only open on Fridays and Saturdays and luckily for us, it was Saturday and they were still open when we finished dinner. So we decided to stop by afterward. It's a small place with a bar counter and a couple of tables. We mainly wanted to do a tasting and pick up a bottle as a birthday gift for our aunt. We tried the moonshine and two different whiskies. I'm not usually a whisky drinker but the maple one was sweet and surprisingly enjoyable. In the end, we bought the Mountain Rita which is their margarita-flavored moonshine. It really does taste like a margarita and is dangerously good. It doesn't taste strong at all, even though it's 40% alcohol! Our aunt has lived in Latrobe for more than 30 years but had never heard of this distillery. I have a feeling she's going to love the Mountain Rita and start telling everyone about it!

I would have said a couple years ago 5 stars but recently traveled there(it's a pretty long drive…read morefor us), got out with our dogs(we had 10 people and 4 dogs, planning to spend a couple hours there and lots of money) and there was a guy standing there that said immediately No Dogs Allowed! and "it's posted Everywhere". He was kind of an asshole about it honestly. I looked on their site before we went AND after this incident to make sure I didn't miss anything and absolutely no mention of no dogs allowed and we had been there multiple times throughout a couple year span where we had our dog with us no problem. google it now.. still says yes we are a very pet friendly operation! I'm not saying to boycott this place but just be aware that you can't take your dog after they advertised it being dog friendly with their "rusty Dogs" Remy Hank and Haven roaming the property.

Every style I tried in the flight was good...they obviously put the effort into getting their stuff right. They live up to being called a "craft" brewery. The atmosphere is fantastic. They have live music from time to time and it looks like they have food available occasionally as well. The bartenders were both super friendly and helpful. It's definitely a place we'll visit again when we're out that way. Highly recommend Whitehorse if you're willing to drive a bit and it's a must-do if you're reasonably close.
