I have been wanting to try Vinsetta Garage for awhile, and I finally got the chance to last Friday afternoon. I went in around 3 PM and we were seated right away. We started with the breadsticks as an appetizer and they were okay, the pazzo dip made it worth it (also pretty unique!). Definitely too much for two people. I ended up ordering the pepperoni pizza, and my boyfriend ordered the Pedro (turkey Burger). Both were pretty good! The pepperoni pizza was so greasy I had to use a napkin to dab some of it off because it was dripping and making the crust super soggy. Otherwise, the quality of the pepperoni was top notch and I enjoyed the pizza. The turkey burger was also good, my boyfriend said the regular burger there is better and wished he got that instead. The service was good, nothing exceptional but we never felt ignored. Unfortunately, with all of the burgers, you get chips and if you want any other side (even fries) it's a $3 up-charge which is kind of steep considering the burgers are already $13-$16. The restaurant itself is so cool, as it used to actually be a car shop. Their decorations are on point, if you get a chance or if you have to wait for a table I'd just walk around and look at everything they have set up. Nice things to look at! Usually a weekly goer every Friday after work, but the prices for their food are just outrageous now. I get prices are high, but no way will I go there for food anymore. The alcohol is getting up there in price as well. It's been awesome going there every week, but $22-$25 for a burger is insane. This was probably some of the worst American food I've had in my life. I split the tikka masala fries with my date, and the only flavor profile was salt. There was not spice, no sugar, no ANYTHING besides straight salt. The fries were well done, and literally the tikka masala had no other flavor besides salt. We both had a burger, and the buns were not even toasted, and tasted STALE. I got the onion rings, and they were probably the worst onion rings I've ever had in my entire life. Picture the saltiest, oiliest, greasiest onion rings you've ever had. Honestly, they should have been called oil-rings for how bad they were. The burgers were aggressively mediocre, and their buns were literally straight out the bag, stale and not seasoned. I came out to Vinsetta for the first time. The bass on the sound system was buzzing with energy as we walked through Vinsetta's inconspicuous wooden door on the side of the garage. The industrial decor was aesthetically pleasing; a big open space with brick walls and metal and exposed wooden beams overhead. Leather stools lined the bar and leather covered booth seats on the side of wall. Brown paper bag table top covers with crayons at the hostess desk waiting for little hands or the properly inebriated to make some crazy art. Family friendly with a good mix of Americana foods - burgers, pizza, pasta, salads, etc. I came out here with a friend and my husband and baby. We had the chicken pesto pizza, chop house salad, microbus salad, mac and cheese side, hot wings, and fried cheese curds. My favorite was the fried cheese curds! Hot and gooey with ranch dipping sauce. Enjoyed the experience, sometimes hard to hear the other person (high ceilings, metal, cement building materials) but otherwise food was generally spot on, atmosphere cool, and service good. read more

We live close by, and my brother had just helped my husband with some heavy house work, so lunch was on us, anywhere he wanted to go since he doesn't live on this side of town. The infamous Vinsetta's it was! I was still grocery shopping, so I met up with the husband and brother about 20 minutes after they were seated. I didn't want hold back their meal, so just asked them to order me French Onion soup, I arrive and it's already waiting for me - sweet! But where was their food? Still hadn't arrived. So, I dig into my soup, still nice and hot, and we chatted. For like 20 more minutes. No other food showed up. The place was 2/3 full, so it wasn't like they were over run, but 40 minute for these guys to wait seemed strange. And I'm a pregnant lady, so I'm getting hangry from the wait. We were able to flag a different server over and ask them what was going on. And at that point, my brother mention's that he thinks he saw our server walk out with her jacket (Can you feel my eye roll? But we're not reviewing my brother here, right?). Another server comes over and apologizes profusely for the shift change, which caused some miscommunication where our table was THE ONLY ONE not passed off properly. So I ask her if they can drop something in the fryer really quick while the guys are waiting for their burgers. At this point, I am starving after my soup, because we'd been here so long. The food did eventually come out, with some compt wings and shakes, but all this left a bad taste in our mouths. The most offensive part of this story, was after all of this, the fries came out luke warm and the big greasy burgers were $17 each! G'damn!! This has been one of my favorites for a few years now. They have consistently good food. However, I chose to go here this year for my birthday dinner which ended up being a complete disaster. Their hosting staff need has no clue how to strategically seat a party. We were told we would have a 45-60min wait for our party of 10. After 2 HOURS of waiting they finally told us we would have to separate our group! My kids had to sit at a table across from us. I spent my birthday dinner getting up every 5 mins to check on them & cut their food. I complained and was told they just weren't able to get 2 tables close together and refused to push my kids table across the aisle to join with ours. I thought after complaining an apology would proceed but that never happened either. We never once had a manager come up to us. We watched the hostesses seat countless tables ahead of us, never holding 2 tables that could potentially be pushed together to accommodate us. I am saddened that I will never return to what was your once my favorite restaurant. Customer service goes a long way. You're staff could use a good refresher course. If you are thinking of going to this restaurant, I highly suggest trying somewhere else in this area that respects their patrons. read more

We hit up the Garage during the Woodward Dream Cruise. The place has a definite vibe. I totally enjoyed my experience there. We got salt and vinegar chips for an app. They were neither salty nor vinergary. But, the dip was awesome. We also got cheese curds...Way better then WI cheese curds-plus! I got the chop salad, it was great. The dressing was awesome, but this is not a low cal salad. Ha. In fact, I'm not sure there is a low fat option anywhere. I do think though that this is not a low cal place. Everything that came out to any table near us looked delicious, but also looked greasy. The place is the bomb, but save up your calories before you go. Awesome spot in Royal Oak, the cocktails are awesome, plenty of cool draft beers, but know you are in for a heavy dinner. I really wanted to like this place. Why? First off, because its within walking distance. Secondly, the hype from the other reviewers made me so excited to try it! I am going to start complaining here. So, sorry in advance. I understand keeping the garage close to its original state was important, or so they say, and I think they almost tried too hard to do this. (Whats with the brown paper used to wrap up auto parts doing on the windows?) And because of that it annoyed me to no end that even though they TRIED to keep everything vintage, there were things that couldn't be further from it. I am sorry but the 2010 pennies on the floor are not "vintage". And "F--- the Police" is not true to the era (or eras) that this garage was built or thrived in either. The music was not only horrible in my opinion, but SO LOUD that I had a headache leaving the joint. The tables were very close to each other and that alone made me feel nervous, since I like to have a bit of privacy while I indulge in a meal. The waitstaff was not friendly. The waitress seemed irritated when I asked if they had dairy-free options available. There was only one staff member that asked how we were doing, and that was a busser. Service was slow, and I am pretty sure it wasn't just us that thought so because many other people at tables were looking around, glasses empty, with annoyed looks on their faces. We waited so long for everything. The wait staff seemed to hardly be around the tables but there were a bunch gathered together in front of the oven area, and different people were bringing out food. I saw a waitress in the bathroom using a Dyson hand dryer to blowdry her hair(?) which I also thought was strange. I get that the people that run this place have supposedly wonderful restaurants in Clarkston. But this isn't Clarkston. And having menu items that are called 'Woodshop' this and 'Woodshop' that devalues the old garage! To me, this shouldn't be (or at least shouldn't look) like it's another addition to a monopolizing restaurant chain; it should feel warm, original and homey. The items should not advertise their other restaurants. This should be a separate entity, and pay total homage to what the garage once was to so many locals, which these restauranteurs clearly are not. Do you think guys from Clarkston and their families ever got their cars worked on at the Vinsetta Garage? Kid Rock? Give me an f'n break. Ordering dairy-free sucks in general, but after recently finding out the reason I was close to anaphylactic shock was because I consumed dairy, it is now important that I stay away from the heavenly gifts of cheese, cream, milkshakes, etc. (Oh, how I miss you, Gouda.) I started off with a the plum crazy cocktail from the "testlab drink menu." It was delicious but also weak. $10 for a weak drink? Really? We ordered the wings as an appetizer with some sauce other than the Cholula hot sauce (I guessed that it had butter even though the waitress insisted it didn't, figuring it was like traditional Buffalo sauce made with Cholula instead of Red Hot. She checked and it did have butter.) They were cooked nicely and they were flavorful. They had a brown sugar rub and they were smoked, and then deep fried before serving. I didn't get a lot of smokiness in the meat, but the rub was good. I ended up ordering, as my entrée, a bowl of the navy bean soup and a small salad. I forget the name of it, but it had lettuce, fried garbanzo beans, diced tomatoes and onions with a tomato vinaigrette (Vegans beware: it is an emulsified vinaigrette made with egg yolks). The salad was good overall. The soup was too. It had decent heat. Wish I would have gotten more than literally 1-1/2 inches of soup in a small crock for 4 or 5 dollars. My fiancé ordered the meatball platter. He got the Angus meatballs with the roasted vegetable sauce. He got mac and cheese as a side and also the broccoli rabe. He said the mac and cheese tasted like bland, dry noodles and Cheez-Its. To me it smelled good. He enjoyed the broccoli rabe. He also said the meatballs (all 3 of them) were dense and bland. This place gets crowded pretty quickly for the dinner rush. They have valet parking but you can park on the side street near the restaurant. The tikka fries were tasty with a bit of heat. The chicken was a tad dry but it was good with the paneer and green onions on top. The union Mac and cheese was very cheesy and delicious. The crunchy top added great texture to the soft noddles. The chop salad was a nice mixture of blue cheese, dried cherries, cucumber, tomato, ham, and fried onion strings. I loved the most unhealthy thing about the salad, which were the onion strings. The Margherita pizza was very good too. The pizza was 12 inches and the crust was great. The tomato on top were in big chunks so when they were cooked in the oven they released a lot of their juices, making some spots on the pizza soggy. Overall, great food. It's well worth it if you beat the dinner rush. In the future, I would want to try one of their custard milkshakes. read more

At my place of employment, we've been working on a new campaign where we contemplate what Detroit might be like in 2030. Upon review, let's hope this future includes more Vinsetta Garages. To an extent, the Vinsetta Garage is a theme restaurant, and that theme is evolution. The menu pretty much reflects what would happen if a Coney went to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. You'll see the dishes that have defined Detroit cuisine for years served up in new ways. The coney dog gets chopped up and put on a pizza with a wood-fired crust. The gyro becomes a perfectly cooked burger, with all the components on the bun with it. The chili cheese fries take on a poutine-twist, The usual choice of Labatt's or Miller has been replaced by an assortment of microbrews with an emphasis on Michigan ones. In short, this is an imaginative take on Detroit cooking, and is the reason for that long and winding line out the front. What sets it apart is the attention to details in the cooking. The onion rings may well be the best onion rings on the planet, as you can taste the bitterness of the beer batter counterbalancing the sweetness of the onion. The aforementioned lamb burger was cooked to perfection, with the meat being juicy and flavorful despite being well-done. The key lime pie tastes as if it were made from actual key limes and not much more. The Vinsetta Garage could very well be the future of Detroit cuisine. If you get the chance to eat here, enjoy it. read more

Vinsetta, a Woodward staple for years as a garage has been reclaimed and made into a restaurant. It's a beautiful thing when such an important part of the area's history is preserved, not torn down. I couldn't be happier with it's new identity. The garage feel is very much still present. There are all kinds of little remnants of the garage that once was without it being to "themey" or gimmicky. The atmosphere is casual but with character and a nice nod to the days that once were. The menu has lots of custom options, sort of catering to the idea of the custom shop. I got a custom burger with a pretzel bun (YUM) and what I consider "classic" burger toppings- Cheddar, Lettuce, Onion, Tomato & Mc Clure's Pickle slices. (I love that they use McClure's pickles, supporting the locals is always good in my book!) The burger was cooked to perfection and is enormous! The meat was so juicy and fresh that I couldn't stop eating it, despite how messy and huge it was. This left me to think that I've got another contender for best burger in town here. The burgers come with fresh Vinsetta homemade chips, they were thin & crispy & just right. For a side, I couldn't resist the Woodshop Mac n Cheese. It's exactly as I remembered, just minus the hot sauce I had dumped on it when eating it with BBQ, still good just not as punchy. ;) We started with the Disco Fries. I'd say they were wise to not name this Poutine, for obvious reasons that would beg comparisons...but it consists of the the basic ingredients that are characteristic to the quirky Canadian classic...fries, gravy, chives, cheese curds. I really enjoyed the Disco Fries, they were just enough to start out with and really had a nice combination of flavors. Needless to say, there was little room for any sweet treats after the delicious burger & fries & mac n cheese. We will be back to sample though, that's for sure. I am so beyond thrilled to have this establishment so close to home and in such a historical building. I'm not paying to valet to go to a restaurant that looks like a literal garage and street parking is horrid. Secondly, 45 minute (estimated) wait times on a Tuesday? Ridiculous. Luckily, we got in faster. The decor is actually really cool inside, I'm usually skeptical of restaurants in the burbs that advertise things like "Detroit eats". Please. Service is slow. Our server was nice, but wasn't sure about half of the beers and it felt like she didn't really care and that I was inconveniencing her by asking. I got the build your own pasta and 2 beers and ended up spending 40 after tip. That's atrocious. The pasta was good but I could've made better on my own. Saw this joint on the US of Bacon and had to try it. Neat little bistro located less than 5 miles away from my new place. "Free" (no suggested tip amount) valet parking, lots of tables & bar space. Saw a lot of good things on the menu, but had to try their triple pork Macon Bacon Burger. Home applewood smoked bacon, pancetta, & Canadian bacon on top of a delicious beef patty. Had a side of loaded home cooked potato chips & potato salad. Deelish! I was in such a food coma going home. Very interesting building. It was an actual garage and gas station converted into a restaurant. We paid $200 for 7 people including 4 adult drinks. The potato chip appetizer was bland and the dipping sauce did not add anything to the taste. I would not order again. We went on a Friday evening and it was very crowded so it took a while to get the food, but that is to be expected. The worst part of the experience was the sound level. The one issue here is make sure you are not in a hurry if you want to eat around dinner time, waits can be as long as 3 hrs. So this was the only place we hadn't been to out of all the Union restaurants. Truthfully, we had driven by it countless times, but each time we did, we either weren't in the mood for it, or it just looked way too busy. However, one evening, and in this case, it was a Friday, we along with a friend, decided to pay a visit. We arrived around 7:30pm, and surprisingly, didn't have problems finding street parking. As we walked up, I noticed the grungy exterior design, and I like that they utilize it as valet. Once we stepped in, we were quoted for 1:15-1:20 hour wait. Since we are patient folks, and although we were pretty hungry, we all agreed to wait it out. Being hopeful that we wouldn't have to wait the full time, we perused the menu and chatted the night away. We ended up waiting 1:45, and were excited to eat!! Our seating arrangement was right behind the bar, and was pretty tight. We quickly placed our orders, and waited about 20 minutes for our food. I went with the 3AM burger ($12.95), Husband with the chili-rubbed flank steak ($15.95), and our friend with the Pesto Pie ($12.95). My burger had good flavor with the angus patty, MI maple bacon, fried egg, crispy onion strings, and sriracha mayo. I would have liked it spicier. Loved the pretzel bun, though it wasn't toasted enough. For the price, it was small, and very greasy. I didn't like that the bottom half of the bun was so thin that it disintegrated into mush. The chips that were served with it were cold, stale, and partially burnt (if that's even possible). Husband's flank steak had a nice cumin sugar seasoning, and cooked to the right medium rare, but the portion was skimpy. 6 4-5" pieces of meat for $15.95 is steep. Plus, you only get 1 sidecar item, instead of 2 at the rest of their restaurants. Union Mac was consistently delicious, but we were boggled over the 1 sidecar item that they give you. Each additional is $3.50. Our friend's pizza was a good 12" size pie, and probably the only thing that looked price appropriate. Our friend gobbled down 3 slices, and looked happy. Perhaps their pizzas are the way to go. Overall, as much as I like supporting local businesses, and I like the rest of the Union restaurants, I don't see us coming back here anytime soon. The seating of this place is also awkward, and poorly laid out. Surprisingly not a ton of seating for the size of the place. If we come back, maybe next time we should come back during off hours. This place was bitchin, start to finish. Beers: great variety. My husband had a seasonal brew that was freakin sweet. Slightly sour and fresh Specialty cocktails: inventive and more expensive tasting than they're charging. I had "The Late Model" and it was swanky as shit. Apps: we had the chicken wings. So bomb; excellent outer crisp but succulent inside with an awesome sauce on the side Main: the 3am burger is everything you want it to be. I really really like this place..the atmosphere, the staff, the food, the drinks and even the website carries this 'bad ass' appeal and I can't wait to continue to come here and try everything! Only problem is the parking, but the place is huge and in the summer their outdoor seating area is nice. The entire appeal is garage (hint the name) and if you're like me, I instantly want to look cool coming here. I want to have many arm tattoos, slicked back hair or just look like Rizzo from Grease. The bar staff and waitstaff have been extremely friendly even when the place is packed and they're super busy. If you have to wait for a table and the bar is open.. take advantage and order a signature cocktail and become friends with the bartender. You can never have too many bartender friends. I have tried the deep fried cheese curds (so good) their chop salad (eh.., but i really hate ordering salads.. ) the Pedro (yummy) and the faygo ice cream with pop rocks (Yo! What did you say?! We had a large party on several checks and the service was impeccable. The server was on top of everything. Food came out hot and together and the drinks were always refilled on time. Hubby and I ordered the lamb burger and the 3 am. We had a side salad - which was a steal - it was a huge portion. Kids meals were also huge for under $4.
