Stop #3 on the birthday staycation wine tour was Vint Hill. Before coming I reached out to confirm they were open today due to the holidays. I received a phone call from a super nice staff member Ashley who confirmed they were open. I arrived shortly after they opened. I was greeted immediately upon entering and was guided to the station to decide on my wine flight. The winery is located in a house like structure. It is quaint and nicely decorated. I chose my 3 wines for my flight and proceeded upstairs to enjoy in their seating area. It is much warmer upstairs and comfy. I was the only one there. They do not have a kitchen on-site but have lots of options for snacks while visiting. Upstairs also has a full tasting bar. There are also some nearby areas that serve food that you can bring inside. The 2 highlights for me was the music selection! During my visit smooth jazz and blues could be enjoyed in the background which just added to the vibe of the place. And one of the owners is also an MSU alumni Go Green! read more

We have been coming to Vint Hill Craft Winery for 10 years. In my opinion, the wine here is the best in Virginia! We are VA wine app people, and have been to many wineries across the Commonwealth. The Tannat, Chardonnay (Charlotte), Enigma are my favorites, but every wine is great. The staff are also excellent. Everyone is super-friendly, knowledgeable and committed to making your visit a good one. We've made wine at a multiple week class, attended dinners and special events across the year. The manager (Ashley) makes wine pickup super fun with a tasting class and food pairing every quarter. The food she personally prepares is also excellent...and imaginative. She is also a trained chef! Come for the history, not the wine or ambiance. When my mom was growing up in Virginia, her parents were in the army and so often came here when it was still a military commissary. So it was really for me to visit it as a winery - they've maintained the building as it was and have many military artifacts from the Cold War on display. They also win the award for coolest bottle labels, because they are all 1940s esque with pinup girls and wartime aesthetics. However, the wine is just so-so. And when I did a tasting, the girl behind the bar really didn't know much about wine. There's also no great place to sit and enjoy a glass. Cue the U-turn. We were twenty five minutes early to our niece's ballet recital next door, so my husband and I decided to challenge ourselves in doing a quick wine tasting. The winery is located in the same parking lot as a small cafe, Old Busthead brewery, and the Cold War museum. As we pulled up, we noticed all types of World War II facts which I thought was really odd for a winery theme but that was all explained when we walked in. Vint Hill is located in an old dairy farm that was used in World War II to intercept overseas messaging. I applaud them to sticking with a theme and going for it! If you are looking for the more traditional, drinking outdoors in the rolling foothills of Virginia type atmosphere they have a cute little backyard patio with some tables. The person who helped us was really friendly, gave us some recommendations and background on the building. My husband and I each got a flight so we could try as many wines as we could in our limited time. We are mostly red drinkers but enjoyed the 22 Cuvee Blanc - "Misty" and 21 Viognier - "Vivian" the most. They were light, crisp, and perfect for a hot summer day. The tasting room is quite small and quite dark. It overlooks the production facility which was full of boxes and honestly missing out on the aesthetic markings that make a winery visit super relaxing and a must visit spot. But we came for an in and out, and they definitely fulfilled our need.The parking lot has about eight small rows of grape plants so I am assuming they don't harvest in house. We popped in to try some wine while we waited for a wedding to start down the street. My husband does not know much about wine, so we shared a tasting. The man giving us the tasting was very knowledgeable and friendly. I'm usually not a fan of Chardonnay, but "Charlotte" was one I enjoyed because it wasn't as oaky as other chardonnays I've had before. After the tasting, we got a glass of "Rosie," the rose and "Madison," the petit manseng. Both were crisp and nice to enjoy while hanging out on the rainy day waiting out the time. Moved up to the northern Virginia area 2 years ago and went around to multitude of different wineries in this region. Vint hill stands alone out of them all. Great wines, great staff, and plenty of events to make you part of the winery itself. Mark, head vintner, and Ashley, manager, are awesome and are always engaging and entertaining every event. Vint Hill Craft Winery is a craft winery that opened in Warrenton, Virginia in 2009. It was founded by Chris Pearmund. The winery is located on a farm property that was established before the Revolutionary War. It was well known for breeding exotic European cattle. By 1860, an Englishman named Albert Low constructed his family home on the property (now known as the Inn at Vint Hill). The following year, when fighting broke out nearby at the Battle of Bull Run, Low raised the Union Jack flag over the farm and declared it was the sovereign property of Great Britain. Throughout the entire Civil War, neither army ever fired a shot on the 800-acre farm. In 1940, then owner Mitchell Harrison began receiving radio transmissions from all over the world on his ham radio. By 1942, the U.S. Army established a top-secret monitoring station inside a dairy barn on the property. It was dubbed "The Listening Post" (aka Monitoring Station #1). Army personnel decoded messages from the Germans and Japanese throughout World War II as well as the Soviets throughout the Cold War. The station finally closed down in 1997. Once the winery was established in the same barn, their motto became "You Were Never Here". Since 2017, the head winemaker has been Mark Ward. My wife and I have good friends who live in the Greater Washington D.C. area, not far from some of Virginia's best wineries. On one occasion when we visited our friends, they took us on a fun day of Virginia winery hopping. They took us to three wineries that happened to have been founded by Chris Pearmund, including Vint Hill. We really loved hearing the history of the barn that houses the winery. Not only are the wines excellent, but several of the bottles feature World War II era Pinup Girls. My favorite wine was "Booty Call": a Merlot complete with a skull & crossbones on the bottle. We were in the area after doing a tasting at another local winery and also tried a brewery across the parking lot. The decor inside is interesting and consists of a lot of history. My husband enjoyed it because of all the military influence and history behind it. When we arrived we were greeted and directed to go upstairs. My husband and I purchased a tasting and tried 4 of their wines. I wasn't a huge fan of the wine, but my husband liked the red wine that we tried. Everyone who worked there were super sweet. It was pretty empty when we were there, so I'm not sure that they get much business. However, if you're in the area, its certainly worth the visit. read more

3.5 stars. I liked (but didn't love) this winery. Their reds weren't bad but just ok. All that said, I do recommend Vint Hill. Here's why: They offer flights & reds/whites by the glass. Get there during off-peak hours as the interior (where you order) is small and not conducive for crowds/groups. Limited seating outdoors but it is available. Historic property with lots to read up on while you're there - so please do! Very sweet staff as well. There are a few places to grab a bite nearby (next door). In closing, this is a special place and if you want to polish your experience off with good beer, Old Bust is around the corner. :) read more

A very unique winery, located in the middle of an old CIA information-gathering complex that was active during the height of the Cold War. Many of the wines are made from grapes from other states like California, hence the word "American" on the bottle (and not Virginia...) The prices are a bit high but that seems to be the norm with Virginia wineries these days. I don't think they do counter tastings as the indoor area is small and industrial. I was there with a large group and never having the wine before, I was not sure what to get. No offers try try any before buying so I just trusted the staff person working there...the rosé was what she described, dry and crisp, and that worked for our group (we also ordered their sparkling wine, their Cab Sauv, and an off-dry white that I can't remember the name of). You have to commit to spend $100 on one bill if you want to reserve a table. When another group came in to take our table, the staff just asked us to move to the chairs around the firepit - no problem there. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you're a recent American history buff. read more

Excellent wine, great service and great folks! Their cab franc is the best one I've tasted in northern VA! Their merlot, cab sauv and Syrah are excellent as well! The 2018 petit Verdot is ready to be consumed straight out the bottle. Had a great time out there and will be back for sure! read more

I didn't actually go in the winery as it was closed, and I couldn't find a YELP subject for just VINT HILL. Eons ago, I used to pass by the VINT HILL area every day to/from work, never paying it any attention except to note it was a military station which was fenced off, heavily guarded and the buildings were not visible from the road. Years later, when I told my husband of this place, he surmised it was 'the farm', and asked to go by it. At the time, it was still fenced off including concertina wire. A few years more, we brought his son back east with us and told him about the place. We drove by it again, and lo and behold, SOME of the land had been opened up and there were new houses! We drove in this time and looked around, seeing obvious military buildings, some barracks, a grand house which looked like someone high up the military food chain lived in, some bunkers, some graves of 'unknowns' and the barn building that looked like the center of things. Hubby maintained he thought it was 'the farm.' There was still a section that was fenced off from the rest of everything and manned by a guardpost. We were not allowed to go down that road. Roll around to 2014 and we drove by it again... out of curiosity. The entire area had been opened up. The old barracks, bunkers, mucky-muck home, graves, storage and barn building were still there, but now, the community had taken over the land. There was a public pool, some of the military buildings had been taken over by private sector, there were new business office buildings, a new housing development, several community fields for sports, a museum with the story about VINT HILL FARM STATION, and a winery. Wow! In front of the winery were a few grapevines, but if that was the extent of their crop, it seems there would be a shortage very quickly after harvesting. Regardless, it's an impressive overturn of land, and I suppose I'll never know the REAL story, EVER. :o) read more

Decent wines, nice atmosphere. I normally wouldn't recommend visiting a place because of their backstory, but for them I'll make an exception. Especially worth visiting if you buy the $20 Skedaddle wine pass which also includes Bull Run and Pearmund wineries (purchased at any of those stops, and an awesome deal for the price), stopping here last for lunch. Vint Hill is a smallish operation built on an old WW II signal intelligence station; if you're a history buff this is worth a stop regardless of your feelings towards wine. They are adjacent to the Cold War museum as well. The wines - $10 tastings, nothing I hated, just nothing that blew me away. The standout was the Chambourone red, although at $34 the price point was rather high. My parents bought the Enigma Bordeaux style, which I enjoyed once it had time to breath. The building is rather odd; definitely not a traditional 'winery'. The tasting room is upstairs from the Cold War museum. No vines on property; they get a lot of them from California and Washington. But wine tastings are about the experience as much as they are about the wines, and here Vint Hill delivers. The Covert Café next door is small, modestly priced bistro which served a nice lunch (but closed on Sundays). Across the street is a brewery. Signs from Cold War outposts abound. Vint Hill also offers the opportunity to craft your own wine. It's hard not to find something you DONT like at here. read more

Was at Old Bust Head and saw that there was a winery across the parking lot so walked over to check out. Not sure why this place has so many negative reviews because we had a really positive experience. We did have to wait a few minutes since there were other tastings going on when we got there but it wasn't that much of a wait at all. As for the wines, my hubby and I enjoyed most of them. They were all very easy to drink. And if you like Pearmund then you will like Vint Hill; the wines are made by the same person. Hubby and I ended up going home with three bottles. I'd have to say I was very pleasantly surprised especially after reading the reviews on here. read more

We had a wine pass that allowed us to go here, pearmund and bull rub for $20. You can buy them at any of the wineries. So we made the trek out to this place and it was neat to see the cool historic stuff. It is really a weird little town, but worth checking out. The staff was friendly, but the wine didn't really do much for me. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great. I would suggest you check this place out if you like a mix of wine and history though. read more

The second stop on our Saturday winery tour. The name is misleading though as there is only one building and no grounds. We did the wine tasting here as well and while our sommelier was a very nice girl who also let us tried their signature "Booty Call", the wine itself was unfortunately not that memorable. The building itself was nice, but without any vineyards to look at, it did not feel like a 'real' winery, I'm afraid. 2.5 stars - I am rounding up to 3 because of the friendly service. read more

Vint Hill has a neat story and it's the only winery I can think of off hand that you can actually create your own wine with their wine maker. $6000 will get you 12 cases of your very own wine. Or half of that and then the winery gets to sell the other half. Sometimes they even have this type of wine on the tasting menu, which I think is pretty neat. The staff is also always very sweet. My husband and I have gone here a couple of times and I can say the staff is as friendly when they are really busy as they are when it's just the two of us in a snow storm. So kudos for that. Of the 8-9 wines we tasted, I only really liked two this visit. The Sauv Blanc and Rose both were very good. I remember liking the Booty Call the last times I was there, but they don't have it on the tasting menu anymore. *sad face* They have picnic tables outside and a grassy area you can sit and enjoy wine/snacks. This isn't the type of winery I want to go spend an entire afternoon at, but if you are in the area, I think it is worth popping in for a visit. read more

We stopped in for a wine tasting and loved the Cold War pinup girl themed wines. The tasting area is up some steep stairs, so be careful descending after the tasting. There were several wines we enjoyed and ended up buying two bottles. When we requested rinsing out our glass when transitioning from rose to red, we were told they weren't allowed to do that and supplied a new glass instead. They suggested we eat the provided crackers instead... seemed like an odd rule. The person pouring the wines described each one during the pour but then immediately became distracted with other tasks behind the desk even though there were 3 other employees. I prefer when there's a good back and forth between the spokesperson for the wine and those at the tasting. read more

We have always heard of Vint Hill Craft Winery, but just recently visited. We stopped in as a group of 7 of us. We often visit wineries in VA and like to try new ones, often times stopping in at 4 per weekend. We have varied tastes, so a visit to the winery for all of us often gives a broad range of reviews, but we all liked this particular winery. The wines they offered were nicely done. The selection was vast and something we really liked. But what really impressed us was the venue. The setting is an old covert radio room used in World War II to spy on radio transmissions and ultimately help to win the war. It's great to see all the old pictures of the room the way it looked many decades ago and all the pin up art hanging around. Many of the bottles have pinup-related names and images on them. The tasting room staff was VERY friendly and accommodating, allowing us to bring in our own snacks and move the tables around to allow us all to sit together. They even checked in on us from time to time to ensure all was well. Can't wait to visit again!! read more

Took my mom here as she was visiting from out of town. She'd been to Bull Run and other wineries previously and wanted a change. It was a little difficult to find as it is only one building, inside of an old barn and no true "winery" grounds as you think of. One will not find grape vines growing outside. The history of the building and area are pretty neat info for history buffs. The wine tasting was reasonably priced at $12, for almost 12 wine samples. The food menu choices are very simple but there is a restaurant & brewery directly across the lawn. Most of the wines were dry, which is not a favorite of mine, so they weren't very memorable. However there was not a wait and we were well taken care of. read more

Arrival; the winery is in an industrial type area. It is owned by Pearmund along with Effingham. The door to get it is kind of hidden. The road coming up the Winery is very Corvette friendly. Upon arrival walk in go up the stair. This place use to be a listening post during WWII very cool. Our pourer was very informative on the wine and the background of the Winery. The wines, the whites were typical Virginia whites not bad. The reds awesome. The Cab Franc and the Sangiovese were delicious. Over all a great experience. The tastings were $10 but you can buy a trifecta card and go to all three wineries and do tastings for $20. read more

This is one of the most unique wineries we have found! Driving up to it we were having 2nd thoughts....seemed to be just some outbuildings in the middle of neighborhoods. We finally found the winery and once we entered and met Susan, the tasting room manager, it became "wow, how are we just finding this!" Susan is terrific and tells truly interesting stories of the history of what once was a covert army operation. Not only is the place fascinating, the red wines are phenomenal! Due to Susan's engaging personality and the quality and price point of their wines, we became their newest wine club member! read more

I came her me today with my mother for the first time (we're Pearmund wine members) and we loved it. Heather was our host for tasting and Holly (the Winery Manager) also joined to talked to us since it was just us two at the time. Both very friendly and super personable! I love the history behind this place, especially the recognition of Asian Americans in WWII! They're also very knowledgeable about the areas and things to do, so we're likely to come back to this area again and support the local businesses. Definitely recommend--you'll walk away with a tummy full of great wine a greater appreciation to our service members from this community and the area. read more

A vineyard without vines... well you could count the vines out front that take up a plot smaller than most people's sustainable gardens... but they do get their grapes from all around Virginia, Washington State, and California. It's hard to ever be impressed with a vineyard that doesn't grow their own or at least trying to, more of a novelty vineyard because of the history of Vint Hill and location. For $10, you can taste their full inventory of wines all of which have nothing that is truly neither exceptional nor unique. Just standard reds and whites with a port to round out the menu that alone the port makes your eyes bulge a little but with a little help of a dark piece of chocolate, makes you smile decadently. For the lack of risk of using someone's else's grapes and not having to grow them either, the wines are way overpriced. What does make this particular place a bit distinctive is that they offer the everyday person the ability to make their own wine with a seasoned wine maker that can then be bottled for one's own consumption or to sell in the tasting room depending on the package purchased. Keep in mind I'm a sweet white wine drinker - only 1 here has any residual sugar. Nice selection of both whites and reds - I just didn't happen to be a fan of any of them. We had such a nice time at this small winery. Love all of the history and each staff member was nicer than the next. Our wine tasting was so personable and a really unrushed experience. They were so friendly (even have a toy box for children in the upstairs tasting room). The grounds are well kept and very mellow. We are now wine club members and will be back, often! read more

Been here twice now over the span of a year. I really enjoy the atmosphere inside the winery. They are a craft winery, which means that they import grapes for other vineyards. It's great to be able to sample their wine styles with grapes from VA, WA and CA. They do have differences, and it is great to try them back to back so an amateur like me can begin to taste the differences between VA grapes and west coast grapes. They have 3 tasting flights - 1) Reds; 2) whites; and 3) premium. The winery is located on the old Vint Hill Army Base, which was an Army Intelligence post. The building where the tasting room is located is shaped like a barn and used to be a "listening station" back during the cold war. They have a really cool picture of the listening station from the WWII era behind the tasting counter. The exterior of most buildings on Vint Hill are not promising, but keep going until you get here. You'll be glad that you did. Park in the back if the front lot is full. The back is really the side, which is closer to the door anyways. read more

This winery is pretty good, especially in terms of a Virginia Winery. The employee who did our tasting was super friendly and bubbly. You could tell that wine is one of her passions and she enjoyed interacting with people just as much as she enjoyed wine. This made the experience a lot of fun. What is different is that Vint Hill does not use any of their own grapes (they have like two) but gets them instead from wineries all around Virginia and even some from California. The concept is cool because you get a very unique blend of wines and some varieties that aren't able to be produced using Virginia grapes alone. The ambiance is nice and they even told us the history behind the Vint Hill military base, which was converted into this winery. They sell light snacks- which we didn't try, along with glasses and bottles of their wine. They are located within walking distance of Old Busthead Brewery and a cute little market with all local goods. Take a boozy afternoon trip out to Warrenton and visit all three. read more

Not only that but they offer a wide variety of classes and courses about wine. Once upon a time I use to pick wine based purely on how interesting I found the label, but no more! Now I actually read the labels too! Whether a novice or wine connoisseur, Vint Hill is the place to go to embrace your love of vino. Don't just visit to taste wine, visit to really learn about wines! My only knock and it's one I would give to most wineries in this area, I just wish there was public transportation to these wonderful relaxing places! read more
