Virginia Eye Center has been my preferred optical care provider for several years now. I have never considered switching to another provider - there is no need to. They are very thorough and take their time to explain what they are going to do and why, then guide me through each procedure. If they are not satisfied with the results of one of their exams, they perform it again and it provides better input for Dr. Chang when she comes in to meet with me. Peggy was very good in performing the initial base-line exams, making me feel comfortable ond confident. Dr. Chang does a great job of following up on previous conditions/ concerns with my eyes, double checks these while with me. She checks my vision test again to see if I need a change to my lenses prescriptions. I left my appointment and felt that I had received very good care! read more

I have been treated by several doctors at Virginia Eye Center. Dr. Ziai is my primary care specialist. She's incredibly thorough and takes the time to explain all the tests. Dr. Merrell did cataract surgery in both eyes. I have no complaints with either the surgery or the follow-up care. She also took the time to explain all the steps involved with cataract surgery and the follow up. Dr. Bourdeau was also part of the follow up and am seeing her now for itchy, dry eyes. All the assistants have been great. I have such confidence in the doctors that even though I moved an hour away, I still keep my appointments with Virginia Eye Center. read more

My initial visit with Dr. Bordeaux was great. She's a very nice woman however the follow up was extremely frustrating and unprofessional. My appointment was on February 14. Today is March 11. I called to find out where my starter contact lenses were and was told they had them. I inquired as to why I was not called and I was told I was called on February 20 clearly a call I never received or missed the office. Never bothered to follow back up. When I called today, they told me I could pick them up anytime which is what I managed to do as I squeeze the time in between appointments. Only to pick them up and be called once I hit the interstate and get back onto my appointment schedule to be told I must return them today I cannot do the temporaries without seeing the doctor again. Had I known this I would not have gone out of my way to pick them up today and squeeze the time in Nila say I turned around and drop the temporary ones back off at the doctors office as I will not be using them I will get the prescription from another doctor . read more

Just say no. Went in for an eye exam. I had to be dilated twice because Dr. Christina decided to take patients that came after me. The tech conducted the eye exam and the DR did not check it. The scripts I received are way off and injured myself as a result. I ended up paying for another eye exam and the DR verified the scripts were grossly incorrect. Medical malpractice is a real thing folks. You can always report the physician for poor medical care. read more

I had a terrible experience with Marley, so much so that I will select another practice for my cataract surgery. She acts entitled and treated as if I was just being processed. I had a great experience with Dr Merrill and the staff for my first procedure however I will seek help else where. I was scheduled for an appointment at 4:30 pm. I arrived right on time and the receptionist told me they have to reschedule since I am a new patient and should have arrived 15 minutes earlier. The doctor was with another patient and she went in the back office twice and made me wait for a full 15 minutes...I could have completed the paperwork in the 15 minutes I was standing there. The doctor was still not done with the previous patient! Very disappointed with this facility. They obviously don't have any respect for their patients and their time. Unfortunately, I had to leave the practice. The doctor, though she seemed like she genuinely wanted to help, was unable to help me with my dry eye issues, and went so far as to send me to an eye surgeon (who suggested he could remove my face - literally - and reattach for "aesthetic reasons" but otherwise could not help me with my dry eye). Several visits and hundreds in copays and a major blow to my self esteem only to be told I was SOL and simply could no longer wear contacts. Went to another doctor who was able to effectively identify and treat the issue and I am happily back in contacts and with my face still attached. read more

This review is for the optical shop associated with the practice. Make sure you check that your insurance covers both the physician's office and the optical shop. My insurance provider only covered the physician's visit. It would of taken the lousy sales woman at the optical shop 1 minute to pull up my information and see they were not in network. Instead she only cared about the sale. I needed Rx glasses and separate Rx sunglasses and I new the cost was going to be up there but I figured it would not be that bad once I received my insurance carriers discounts and credits. Sure enough the sales woman rung me up to the total of over $800.00 and weeks later I come to find out that the insurance only covered $93 because of the optical shop being out of network. I could of gotten the same two pairs of glasses, same brand and all the same gimmicky upgrades through an online retailer that partners with my insurance for a fraction of the cost that I paid at the VA eye center's optical shop. I accept part of the blame for not checking with my insurance but I am sure so could of the sales woman, if she cared more about the customers than how much she could get people to spend! Will never do business with them again! read more

I went to see Dr Sarah Merrill ( Sarah Merrill, MD)for terrible dry eye I had for last 6 months working with only a small laptop screen. She is wonderful so her staffs Anna always calls back & her sincerity is impeccable Michael is the best man and Mary whom I first meet all are great, polite, down to earth. With Dr Merrill's treatment I'm feeling lot better got away from continues watery eye and I've no pain, feeling great. FYI DR Sarah Merrill is a surgeon but she did not show any reservations treating me. From now she is my doctor, I thank her. They should get infinite stars instead of only 5. read more

This past Monday I reached maximum frustration as the insurance holder and financially responsible party for my family. I went in for my eye appointment and was told I owed my $55 co-pay for my last visit as well as $55 for the day's visit. that surprised me as after my last visit, when I checked out, I paid what they told me the bill was which was well over $100 ($130 I think) for the appointment. Why wouldn't that include my co-pay? I asked and that could not be answered so while I sat in their office awaiting a quick test, I told them that my family and I were going to start going elsewhere. I canceled all future appointments for my family members and for me and asked what I needed to pay to clear any remaining balance for my family and for me. It is a gross understatement to state I find their billing practices inconsistent and incomprehensible. This past week alone I have been told our co-pay is $20, $40, and $55. It seems when ever I walk in the door, I owe a balance for prior treatment, yet every time I walk out, I pay what they tell me the charges are. then there are the bills that arrive in the mail! Today I received a bill for my minor daughter's last visit which I attended with her and where I checked out and paid them what they told me to pay. I called the office today and asked why I wasn't told about this charge Monday when I cancelled all future appointments for my entire family and for me and asked to pay all balances. I was told by the nice lady that they don't link a child's account with the insurance holder/parent. I asked how that could be as the child in question is a minor. the nice lady said that is just the way they do things. The worst part is I think that may actually be the case. Three of the four ladies I have talked with to make sure I am fully paid (and to request that in writing) have been pleasant. I think the medical service provided here is good but I grow frustrated when simple billing questions can't be answered or I get different answers to the same question. read more

I had cataract surgery last month and could not be more pleased.. 20/20 vision after both surgeries with no issues.. great follow up by both Dr Merrill and Dr Bourdeau.. office staff is extremely professional and efficient.. After seeing a few Dr's elsewhere, who were diagnosing my eye condition as an allergic reaction. The staff at Virginia Eye Center properly diagnosed my eye issue. Whenever I visited her, she was very caring and compassionate to me and always ready to take her time to explain with great patience the details of my conditions and concerns that I came for . She is very professional, thorough and informative and I am so fortunate to find such an excellent doctor as Dr. Sepsakos. Also, all her staff, particularly technician Cresten, are very courteous, patient and friendly. I couldn't be more satisfied with their wonderful service and I am so grateful to all of them. Five stars for so many reasons.... 1. I came here when my prior practitioner couldn't figure out the cause for all the problems I was having with my contacts. Dr. Merrill diagnosed me immediately with dry eye and the problem was corrected instantly by changing me over to a daily-wear contact lens. 2. Every doctor, professional, and staff member that I have interacted with all speak English very clearly and accurately. I have never had any communication challenges either on the phone or in person. 3. When my son was diagnosed in the ER with a scratched cornea on a Saturday morning, VA Eye Center got him in first thing Monday morning to see one of their doctors. 4. Their annual exams are very thorough. Even though I have zero risk factors or history, Dr. Ali has tested me annually for glaucoma just as part of her routine exam procedures. I was officially diagnosed with glaucoma in both eyes earlier this year at the age of 44, and have transferred my glaucoma monitoring to a specialist at Hopkins (not because I doubt Dr. Ali or VA Eye Center...but hey - it's HOPKINS!). The specialist at Hopkins told me that thanks to the amazingly early detection by Dr. Ali, the odds are that if I stay on top of my treatment and monitoring of the disease, I will likely NEVER notice any visual impairment from it. 5. No hard selling or scare tactics to purchase glasses or contacts through them. read more

I am new to this practice, and I must say Dr.Sepsakos is one of the BEST ophthalmologist I have ever met. When I come for my exam I appreciate the fact that the doctors here take their time with getting the appropriate testing done and answer all my questions. I have not waited for an excessive amount of time at my appointments. The office is prompt and efficient. My experience with all the staff has been very pleasant and they make me feel welcomed. This place is amazing. As I walked in, I was greeted with smiles, and then I meet Dr. Ziai and she was so nice and has amazing bed side manner. I was recently diagnoses with MS and Dr. Ziai did everything she could to help me when it came to my optic neuritis. Dr Ziai was very understanding and caring. I did have some issues with my insurance but the billing manager helped me and was super understanding and helpful. At the end she was able to help me figure out what was going on with my insurance. DO NOT GO! Quick summary: receptionists have so much attitude, the doctors work so slow, they advertise, they are EXPENSIVE than norma, gave me the WRONG prescription TWICE in a row. I went to go get new prescriptions for contacts. I paid about $195 (which is more on the expensive side) and it took them a month to get my trial contacts in! I called two times 1) two weeks later to give them some flexibility, 2) three weeks later. They ordered my trial contacts when I called for the second time. It finally come in, and they gave me a call to come pick it up. So, before I was getting ready to go, I call to confirm. Then I'm told that I need an appointment. Great, they couldn't tell me and assign me an appointment when they called. I then finally go in with an appointment and they don't even give me my right prescription! They also advertise so hard core for Bausch & Lomb. Currently my right eye is red and irritated from them. I come a week later when the next trial contacts come in. THEY ARE WRONG AGAIN! At this point, I'm running out of time and it's not because I procrastinated and delayed my appointments. They tell me I can't any refund, because at this point I'm going somewhere else. The receptionist gives me so much attitude saying there's nothing she can do. I came in three times total. It's not like I'm super free either; I have work so I have to take the day off for these kind of stuff. Expensive, inaccurate, inefficient, and poor service. DO NOT GO. You can find better service for a lower price elsewhere. read more

While my experience with the medical side of this business were fine, the business department is so belligerent I was finally driven to change practices. They lost my (necessary) referral for insurance,causing me much back &forth time until that resolved. Then they mis marked a cancellation,later claiming I owed them some 'no show' fee. While I was still a patient and giving them much paid for business, they put a collection company after this uncalled for 'no show' fee. It is a shame their business dept chases away the clientele . Being a patient there is not nearly worth the patience that requires. Go elsewhere. read more

Had cataract surgery left eye only less than 1 week ago. Surgeon was excellent in technique but 3 things were way off: was not told to expect eye would be virtually blind morning after surgery - almost totally cloudy and blurry. No on-call doc available either through surgery center or eye doc office. Also although the office has handled thousands of these surgeries when I asked for estimated out-of-pocket costs NO mention was made to expect the $620 surgery bill on top of doc's bill! Also office staff people very surly attitudes. Cannot recommend this office read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I had an appt for 8:15am and while en route, I received a call at 8:09am that they need to reschedule the appt because I should've been there at 8am since I am a new patient and it will take 20 minutes to fill out 4 pages and then they need time to input it into the system. I told the receptionist that I was 3 minutes away, putting me there at 8:12 (still arriving before my scheduled appt time) and that it would not take me 20 minutes to fill out 4 pages. She insisted that they needed the time for the paperwork. I told her to just cancel the appt and I'll find someone else!! Most ridiculous thing I've heard where a patient would arrive BEFORE the scheduled appt time and yet the office still has an issue with it. If they want new patients to arrive 15 minutes prior, they need to make the appt for 15 minutes prior!!! Don't waste your time at this place. I should've read the review prior to making the appointment and would've seen Sherry also had the same issue. read more

Dr Niloo Ziai, MD is a terrific doctor who's been tracking me for glaucoma. She is VERY thorough. She got her graduate degree from The Mayo in Rochester MN and also graduated from Cornell. Quite bright and extremely personable-- I strongly recommend seeing her or any of the other doctors in The Eye Center! read more

Virginia Eye Center was a referral from a neighbor. What a mistake it was going there. My mother is over 70 years old and on medicare. Medicare only pays for one eye exam and prescription update annually. My Mother had her exam with Dr. Ziai and was referred to a specialist for a test. She had to wait a month to see the specialist but was told by the specialist that there was nothing wrong and her eyes were good. When she called Dr. Ziai's office to request her prescription she was told that she needed to make another appointment with their office for a follow up and get her prescription. She inquired and was told taht she would have to pay for another office visit and any test. The fun and games began when she said she could not afford a second office visit and just wanted to pick up her prescription. Numerous phones calls later, I said I would call medicare and report them and suddenly her prescription was ready to be picked up. DO NOT USE THIS PRACTICE, especially if you are a senior or have parents that can be taken advantage of. read more

All doctors and staff are extremely kind and helpful. Dr. Bordeau went out of her way to care for my severe eye infection. She spent many hours in office outside of normal business hours and shared her contact number for when I had questions or concerns. I was so impressed by the entire office.
