Dr. Sedgewick is an amazing ophthalmologist - if you have any issues or concerns with the eyeballs, he is the doctor that you want to see! Being a specialist in cataracts and in glaucoma, making an appointment is a breeze, and his front desk staff are very friendly, welcoming, and very kind! Dr. Sedgewick is extremely knowledgeable - you can tell that he has years of experience, care about each individual patient of his, and makes an effort in building a good rapport. He explains everything explicitly and takes the time to answer every single question one may have - he cares about patient education! Was not impressed by the customer service or treatment here. Dr. Sedgewick just seemed interested in doing straightforward treatments to get paid. Didn't listen to my husband who wanted to explore other options. Surcharge for credit card payments is annoying. read more

Judgmental, Condescending, and Dismissive. If I had to summarize my experience with Dr. Sedgewick, these are the things that immediately come to mind. I took my father to Dr. Sedgewick in an attempt to set up a new glaucoma provider for him since moving to Loudoun County. My first interactions with the office should've been a red flag, as the scheduler was terse and talked over me on the phone. Nevertheless, administrative interactions don't determine the quality of the physician, and so we kept the appointment. Upon arriving to the office, my father and I were escorted back to the exam room by a courteous woman which helped sooth my concerns over the previous interaction with the scheduler. Upon entering Dr. Sedgewick began with "normal" first appointment questions (why are you here, medical history, etc.). Almost immediately, the appointment fell apart. When discussing my father's double transplant due to diabetic complications (kidney and pancreas), his response was, and I quote, "Wow, you must've made some really terrible life choices!" My father is not overweight and was forced to lead a very active lifestyle given that he was a janitor in a large hospital for 30 years, so his assumption is incorrect and degrading. Upon discussing a prescription my father currently takes to prevent increased eye pressure, again Dr. Sedgewick made a judgmental and snide remark. When trying to explain to the doctor that my father, an Asian-American, has a genetic predisposition to diabetes-related complications (especially to the eyes) with a family history of impacts regardless of lifestyle choices, to further my point, the doctor began to speak over me and make a series of broad stereotypical statements about "poor life decisions." This all happened in less than 5 minutes after Dr. Sedgewick entered the room. While preparing to dilate my father's, Dr Sedgewick reached out to hand my father a tissue. My father has extremely limited vision and cannot see anything except within a very narrow range in front of his left eye. When I explained that to Dr. Sedgewick, he scoffed and asked very sharply "Then why does he even wear glasses?!" Calmly, I explained to him that his low-vision specialist from Johns Hopkins wanted him to keep wearing his glasses, because it does help with eye protection and maintaining the very limited vision my father has left. I then told Dr. Sedgewick that if you hand something to my dad, you have to tell him (i.e. Here's a Kleenex). Dr. Sedgewick continued holding and waving the tissue down near my dad's waist (out of his area of perception) and never said a word. He completely disregarded what I just told him. "Dad, the doctor is trying to hand you a tissue. It's down near your waist," I stated since clearly Dr. Sedgewick was choosing not to. In a matter of minutes, we had been ignored, talked down to and talked over, and judged without merit multiple times. I asked simply that Dr. Sedgewick consider his approach to bedside manner and "Please be kind to us when we answer questions and stop rushing to judgment." This sent Dr. Sedgewick over-the-top. He turned his chair around, blocking me in a corner, and got in my face. What would cause a physician, someone who's tasked with the care and well-being of others, to respond so harshly with being asked to be nice? He shouted "THAT'S IT! THIS IS OVER! GET OUT OF MY OFFICE!" which we gladly obliged. So, I have father with dilated eyes, that received no medical evaluation, and was ignorantly judged by a doctor that doesn't even know him. Never mind the fact that Dr. Sedgewick is out of touch with diabetes research showing strong genetic linkages to physical impacts and susceptibilities. Never mind the fact that Dr. Sedgewick came across as a chauvinist and intolerant toward a viewpoint that conflicted with his own assumptions. Never mind the fact that Dr. Sedgewick seems to promote an unhealthy office culture that allows a scheduler to shout at patients and lacks any semblance of phone etiquette. I simply cannot accept or tolerate the way Dr. Sedgewick talked to or treated my father. It was abhorrent. Just because Dr. Sedgewick's name is on the sign out front, does not give him the right to be a terrible human. Really impressed with the care and expertise from Dr Sedgewick and staff! After looking for a few months and going to several other doctors, I finally found the right one for my dad. The doctor took the time to know us and really addressed all of my dad's needs. The office is clean and they have the latest technology available for their patients. Dr. Sedgewick may indeed be a top notch ophthalmologist, but beware of the forms you have to sign in order to get seen by him. You MUST sign a document which (in bold black text) states: BY SIGNING THIS AGREEMENT YOU ARE GIVING UP YOUR RIGHT AS A PATIENT TO FILE A COMPLAINT OR SEEK DAMAGES". I certainly wasn't anticipating the need to file a complaint or seek damages, but I am not willing to give up my rights to do so - so they refused to see me - which is fine - but I wasted an afternoon. If I had known ahead of time of this requirement I would have never scheduled the appointment. read more

I came to Sedgewick Associates to get a new Rx for contacts lenses and glasses and an eye exam. I'm in my early 30's with no real eye issues other than a crazy strong astigmatism and nearsightedness. I found the office very upscale. They have coffee, tea, seating, and a nice reception area. They also have a nice variety of designer glasses, everything from basic frames to Jimmy Choo. After I checked in, it was very quick to be seen. Overall, clean, thorough, and nice. There is a bit of pretentiousness in the air, but that's not unusual for our area so I was fine with it. Just was very happy not to be in a crappy "one hour glasses" place for once! Felt like I was really getting my eyes checked properly. I recommend highly (will write another review if my contacts and/or glasses don't end up working out!). read more

I think Dr Sedgewick is an excellent doctor, and would have rated this office 5 stars except for the following. After getting a complete eye exam, I was told in order to get a prescription for eyeglasses or contacts, I would have to go see an optometrist for a written prescription or pay Dr. Sedgewick an additional $100 out of pocket to receive the written prescription, even though my eyes were completely examined, and my prescription info was in my chart. I don't understand why that is, but feel that is not in the best interest of the patient. Why should I see an optometrist who is less skilled when an eye surgeon just examined my eyes? I don't understand and don't appreciate. Please write your patients a prescription so they can go anywhere and get the prescription filled if they choose. Great doctor but I think every patient who gets an eye exam should be handed a written prescription that they can use, not use, or save for the future. read more

On a referral from a local Optometrist, we scheduled an appt for my mom to see Sedgewick Associates regarding a possible eye issue. Before the doctor would even see her, the front desk insisted that we had to sign a waiver submitting to binding arbitration in lieu of trial in the case of possible malpractice. Well, we didn't sign the release and as the doctor refused to see her, we were forced to find another doctor. If this is their S.O.P., then is it possible they've had issues in the past? read more

When you walk in the door, you're greeted by smiling employees who are extremely helpful and responsive. Annual eye exams are as thrilling as watching CSPAN on Christmas Eve but the staff here takes good care of you. Dr. Sedgewick is always engaging and takes time to discuss any changes to my vision and all the options for treatment. These are the reasons why I've been seeing him for more than a decade. read more
