10/10 experience. I had my initial consultation with Mateo and immediately knew this would be a cut and color I would be confident in. He listened to exactly what I wanted and also helped me figure out some of the things I needed more guidance on. Mateo took the time to explain not only the science of the products that they use, but also gave me a really thorough rundown of exactly how long both my color and cut would last and even what and how it would fade. He explained that if there was anything I didn't like or wanted to adjust after the initial appointment, even just a little snip, it was all included in the services. I could tell he prioritized me loving the end result and it felt like we were on the same team. I normally don't book appointments the same day as the consultation but for this experience, I did! When it came to the actual appointment everything was so comfortable. Mateo checked in consistently on the vision we were trying to achieve and made sure to stop to ask how I liked it along the way. At no point did I feel he was rushed or preoccupied. He also took the time to answer the (many) questions I had during the process about how to best take care of my hair moving forward and how to better treat my curly hair. The staff were all really friendly. I felt welcomed right off the bat. They made booking my appointment so easy. I found the cost of Mateo's service well worth it. Follow up to my initial review. It's been a month since I received what I can only describe as the worst haircut of my life from Ashley at Virgo Salon. I recently met with the salon owner, Mateo (not Ashley), to address my concerns, hoping for a fair resolution. While Mateo was a patient listener and agreed that the haircut was subpar and acknowledged it could take a full year to undo the damage, he refused to offer any refund or meaningful compensation. Instead, he suggested I book future services with him--without any discount on the continuing care. Leaving the salon, I felt completely disregarded, out $167, and burdened with the additional cost and time needed to correct a lousy haircut that never should have happened in the first place. Beyond the poor service, the lack of accountability has left me feeling disrespected as a paying customer that tipped, and disappointed by a business I had trusted with my hair. Every day I look at my hair with regret because the cut that she gave me has no sense of balance or style. As a cancer survivor, I was most proud of my dedication to growing thick and lush curls. She took that away from me. I am new to LA but this was easily the most upsetting and unprofessional experience I've had in a salon ever, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Reading these reviews, my heart is sinking bc I wish I had read them before I went, because I'm in the same boat. I got a same-day appt on Saturday, so I was thrilled to get in, but even before I left the salon, my hair looked lopsided and not what I wanted, but I thought, let me see how it acts at home after I wash it bc my curls were disrupted in the salon, of course. But now I wonder why did Ashley let me walk out like that after a very quick, 15-min cut? We laughed about how fast it was, but in hindsight and after looking at my hair, a stylist should never aim for a fast cut, especially with curly hair. Take your time! The thing is, Ashley has the same hair as me so I thought she'd understand my hair but she does not. I've had many bad cuts in my life bc NOBODY understands my 3C curls and/or I'm not explaining what "A NICE SHAPE" means, and I'm surprised to learn that yet again that even though I'm assertive in my regular life, when I get into a stylist's chair, I'm meek and mild. This is a great curly hair salon! I love that you can schedule your appointments online and that they ask for you to upload a picture of your curls. I saw Megan for a dry cut only and she really did a great job! I loved the attention to both my ends but giving me a great shape in the process. The shop has a great earthy vibe to it, the waiting area is cute and calming. I had an appointment when they first opened on a weekday morning, so I was able to get a front spot. WORST $520 I ever spent! I am extremely upset. I went to the hair salon with straight, healthy hair and hoped to get nice curls. I did my research online before going in because I know how hard it is to find the right hairstylist when it comes to perms. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice. During the consultation, we looked at some pictures to see which look we were going for. However, my curls came out terrible and my hair texture got extremely dry and damaged. So, he had to cut my hair, saying that the curls blended in. I truly think it was wrong for the stylist to charge me the full price after he saw that the result was nothing like what he promised" After getting a perm done, my hair became damaged and weak, leading to hair loss and breakage. To address the issue, I had to regularly cut it short, four times a year until there was no sign of the perm left. This process of cutting my hair short also affected my hair growth, making it slower than usual. It was a long and tedious journey, but it took me over two years to finally grow back my hair to its healthy state. read more

I went in for a consultation and met Mateo on Friday, the 15th. He was super thorough and welcoming. Mateo listened to what I was looking for, my hair history, and using some of the inspo photos, helped me come up with a color plan that I was super excited about. The salon has a bohemian, typical "LA" vibe, and everything looks as if it was tastefully picked out. I was able to get in for an appt. for a cut and balayage the next morning-- so fast! I saw Ashley for my hair cut, and she did an amazing job. It was so refreshing to see someone who had a similar curl pattern to me, and understood some of my curly hair pain points. For my color, I saw Ashanti, and she did an amazing job. I wasn't super helpful, but let her do what she thought might look best. It turned out beautifully! Both women were super great to talk to, and of course beautiful! I will 100% be coming back to see them both, and am even entertaining the Keratin treatment for curly hair to encourage some growth. I had a great experience at Virgo. I hadn't been to a salon in years--my husband usually cuts my hair--so while I'm not used to paying for haircuts, I don't regret making this little "investment" to treat myself. My hairstylist, Ashley, was lovely. She took the time to answer all my questions and made me feel very comfortable. I have very fine, low-density hair, and the way she cut it in layers made a huge difference--it actually gives the illusion of much more volume! Ashley also recommended a keratin treatment without formaldehyde, which I did after the haircut. The treatment was on the pricier side, especially considering it only lasted about two months, so I probably wouldn't do it again. I got a dry cut back in July, and I'm still waiting for my hair to look good. I did a ton of research, wanting to try a salon that specializes in curly hair. Unfortunately, I wish I hadn't. I specifically told the stylist I wanted a blunt cut and even showed her pictures of what I wanted. I explained that I don't frequent salons often, and I didn't want layers because the bottom layer always grows out and ends up looking stringy. Why did I walk out with triangular-shaped hair? I was so upset I cried. I've never felt this way about a haircut before. It's been nearly five months, and I'm still just as disappointed as I was the day I walked out. To make matters worse, my friend took a closer look at my hair and pointed out that the stylist cut it unevenly and didn't even blend the layers. used to love this place - now not so much. I went in a for a simple maintenance cut and to keep my length but after seeing my hair ends they look more frizzy and uneven after this cut. I used to go with a lovely stylist but she is no longer with Virgo - luckily I found her again and will be going to her to fix my haircut from Virgo. There used to be more of a client focused approach when I first started coming to Virgo and from my last few cuts - it's gone sadly downhill. They don't spend as much time focused on the hair as the stylist before. I hope they can work to become the Virgo I loved - but from now on I will be going to elsewhere. I booked a consultation and a haircut on the website and was helped by Jacqueline. She was so sweet and professional and answered all of my questions in a timely fashion. First I must say that this space is by far the most beautiful, stylish and serene salon I have ever been in. I love how it's modern but has a relaxed feel and even incorporates nature even in the arts district in dtla. I had my consult for the Gina curl with Mateo. He was so welcoming and friendly. He really listened to my hair concerns and goals and I feel confident trusting him with my hair transition. I came back that afternoon for a haircut because I need to get rid of the color on my hair prior to the Gina curl process. My haircut was with Shontia who was amazing. She was great to talk to and was so great with my hair. She kept me well informed throughout the process and always made sure I was comfortable. I was admittedly a bit nervous about going back to my natural black hair as I have not worn it that way in several years. I was a little hesitant to come here at first but I am so happy I did. Anthony made my experience amazing, he went above and beyond! He had so much patience as I was nervous to do a big chop but he did absolutely wonderful, I love it! ABSOLUTELY YES! This Salong is everything it promises to be, and more! I've been struggling to find someone who can cut my curly hair, and after years of searching and trying different salons I found this one and I finally hit the jackpot of hair salons! Ashley was extremely knowledgeable, a true expert on curly hair! She made me feel so comfortable immediately, whereas at other salons who promises curly cuts has never shown me this type of expertise or knowledge. My hair was very damaged and Ashley was honest about what I would be able to achieve in one sitting, and the cut she gave me is so cute and fresh! She gave my curls their life back and was able to create volume for my hair which is something I've been struggling HARD with; (other salons always leave me with pyramid-hair). I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I went last week and I absolutely loved every part of my experience. I worked with Megan and got a wavy/curly haircut and wash/curly style. It was worth every penny. I've been so scared to go to salons, as many curly girls out there know (a lotttt of stylists even curl specialists mess up our hair hahaha), but I could not have imagined the results I got. I haven't gone to a salon in a long time and I finally wanted to get a messy curly wolf cut, so like layers and bangs. It turned out so well!!! I am cleaning up my review and laying out the whole story as clearly as I can because Virgo salon IS A SCAM!!! 1)  Be aware, most if not all the pictures Virgo posts on Yelp and Insta are NOT their work!  "Mateo" takes photos from clients' pages and passes them off to SEEM like he/Virgo did the styling... when in fact the clients are just making regular posts and styled their own hair!! (He changes his name from Spanish to English and uses different initials depending on the day because HE IS A SCAMMER!) 2)  You'll notice most if not all of the positive reviews are for DRY cuts, when the client already styled it!!  I needed a wet cut, any treatments to heal my hair, followed by a dry cut.  That's what I was expecting from so-called "curly hair experts" because that's what they would do.  VIRGO DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO DO THIS (see my detailed experience below) 3)  Be aware, this salon has a NO REFUND POLICY.  If you are unhappy with what they do, you're SOL! 4)  This salon uses a lot of aromatherapies to relax you!  It may seem nice, but may also pull the veil over your eyes to the absolutely atrocious "styling" you will end up with! My experience: I found Virgo through Yelp and was encouraged by the positive reviews.  (I missed the few really bad ones, and you should make sure to check those out because they are the truest experiences on here.)  I initially went to the website, but it seemed like some services weren't being offered and I wasn't exactly sure what to select, so I reached out directly to the salon via email. Red Flag #1: when I contacted the salon, they *did not have a working phone* The salon owner responded and seemed extremely friendly.  I explained that I had A PHOTOSHOOT COMING UP in a few weeks, that my hair could use some revivification - maybe a treatment... would they have any time and be able to help?  They had an opening come up that Saturday morning, and I was so excited they were available.  The owner said I'd be seeing their "curly hair specialist".  As he was the owner, I took his word for it....  I sat down with the stylist thinking I'd hit a gold mine. Red flag #2: she immediately started brushing out my dried, damaged hair, *from the base*, NOT from the ends and working her way up.  She also randomly snipped dead ends, and this is where the "shelf layering" began.  I was wary, but I have difficulty speaking up for myself, especially given other salon experiences I've had and the pressure I felt for this photoshoot coming up.  So I "trusted the process" (BIG MISTAKE), and let her do her thing. She took me up to the warm, relaxing wash area, did a wash and charcoal detox treatment on my head, because I thought it was damaged from hard water. However, RED FLAG #3: SHE DID NOT FOLLOW THIS WITH ANY DEEP MOISTURE TREATMENT We went back downstairs to her chair, and she hacked at my ends some more.  As she was styling, I started feeling more uncomfortable, because it seemed as if there was a lot more hair on my right than my left.  I TRIED TO MENTION IT TO HER THEN! Later I saw I was absolutely correct about the asymmetry!! Red Flag #4!!: she literally stated that she was cutting my hair "in a V"... this is the exact opposite of what you're supposed to do with long, curly hair!  Her next client showed up around the same time... so I didn't want to make a stink out of it. Red Flag #5: she did not finish drying my hair!  I left the salon with half-damp hair!  I left a tip because I felt obligated to do that and the stylist was a good conversationalist, but she did a s**t job on my cut.  I'm just TOO NICE.  I was also posting and tagging on my social media during the appointment, because THAT'S HOW ALGORITHMS WORK... if you post on the spot, it boosts your posts!  (YW for that little tip lol.) I asked the receptionist to take pics of me, again for my FANS, but upon reviewing those posts later, after my hair completely dried... I realized how HORRID my hairstyle was with "shelf layering", lopsided, and completely dried out top layers!! I untagged the salon and even blocked them *later that day* because I felt completely LIED TO about what kind of service I'd get! This is where it gets worse!! The salon owner had ALREADY screenshot my post and proceeded to post my pics on Yelp, YouTube, AND imgBB WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.  THIS IS ILLEGAL.  Thankfully the sites took these posts down when I reported them. I tried to dispute through my bank, but he wrote 23 PAGES all about my SOCIAL MEDIA POST! I REGRET BEING NICE! The salon owner acts like he did nothing wrong, hasn't offered any monetary return for this horrible experience, and insists that my posts on social media and tipping mean I was HAPPY with the styling. I can't tell you how much of a nightmare it has been dealing with this person. WHY would I return to this salon to get ANOTHER cut as recompense?! Ashley revived my recently colored hair! I walked in looking pretty crusty and she was so communicative and helpful in helping me keep my length and density while achieving more volume and shape. My curls tend to drop after day 2 and she understood how to work with my hair type best. She also warned me about cutting my bangs too short which i appreciated. If you are identify as a man and you want a short haircut - don't bother. I have been here maybe 4 times. And every single time has been at worst a 3/5 to 5/5 experience. A lot of fresh hairdressing talent, but today was a massive miss. I don't write reviews. I think I have NEVER written a review in the 10 years I've been on Yelp. But this was absurd. Let me say up front - this is NOT the hairdresser Ashley's fault. They seemed cool. I'm not sure what their pronouns are. I scheduled a men's haircut. I sat down. I told the artist - Ashley - vaguely what I wanted. They said "Okay, let me go get my tools." They come back 5 minutes later and basically tell me they're not comfortable cutting my hair because they don't want to cut it too short and do a bad job. Ashley said they "don't know how" to cut short hair. They mentioned something about not wanting or knowing how to use clippers, and then they promptly told me that I should reschedule with a different artist - Megan. Or go to a barber shop. I didn't ask for them to use clippers. Actually, I explicitly told Ashley I prefer the look of just regular scissors. I'm explicitly going to the boujie curly hair salon because I DON'T want to use clippers. I won't pretend to be an expert in hair cutting. I won't pretend to be an expert in running a business. But it's completely bananas that I scheduled a "Men's Haircut" and I got all the way into the chair and I started telling them what I wanted only for Ashley to tell me that I should reschedule with another hairdresser. I told her "I'm not really sure what to do. I've been here multiple times and I've never had a hairdresser tell me they didn't know how to cut my hair." Honestly, I've never been to ANY salon where they didn't know how to cut short hair. It's completely absurd. If you don't know how to cut men's hair, then why are you cutting men's hair? Why am I sitting in this chair? Why even offer the option? Were you expecting me to come in with flowing locks, and even if I did - why wouldn't I want them cut off? I had to carve time out of my day to come in and get my hair cut. I had to put down all of my work for basically 3 hours to drive out, sit down at 2:30 PM on a Thursday, be told 'I don't know how to cut short hair', reschedule, and walk out. An afternoon totally wasted. Is it Ashley's fault? No, not really. Ashley was super nice. They offered me water, offered me free samples. I appreciate that they refused to do a hack-job on my head. I assume cutting men's curly hair is super hard. That's why I'm willing to pay a premium for it. If I wanted somebody to take some clippers to my head and give me a fade I'd go to Superclips. It's on Virgo for scheduling a hairdresser who doesn't know how to cut short hair for a men's haircut appointment. It's an incredibly obvious possibility. I rescheduled with Megan two weeks from now, but I'm likely to search for somewhere else in the meantime, and eventually cancel when I find it. (No offense to Megan, she's cool too). They sent me out with a 25% discount on my next haircut and some free sample packets of products, about the size of ketchup packets you might get from an In-n-Out. Incredibly disappointing, and completely rage inducing. Both the hairdressers and the clientele deserve better. read more

I've gone here twice - once with Mateo and the other with Ashanti. I really enjoyed my experience with Mateo and would wholeheartedly recommend him. He is the reason for the two stars. However, do not go with Ashanti - it is a complete and utter waste of your money! She started our session with an attitude, and barely said two words to me before diving in. She was rough the entire time, and I asked her multiple times to stop pulling my hair. I was getting a balayage which was meant to make my hair lighter but with cool, instead of warm, tones. I'm ignored sitting in the chair until I'm ready to be rinsed, and once rinsed she tells me that she cannot get me to the color I want and brings me two swatches for color toning options. Both options get my hair basically back to the shade I already had before the appointment . So, I ask her why I'm even paying $500+ to get a balayage to leave looking the same. I ask her why she didn't tell me this up front so I don't waste my money. She then blames it on me saying I didn't tell her my hair history. I told her I'm a client of the salon, all of my history is already in their system! She then storms off without a word. And I'm left sitting there for 20mins WET, with my neck leaning on the sink basin. I have no idea what's going on until finally the manager comes over. I am very late to writing this, but I love this salon!! On my second time there I got a stylist name Megan who was awesome. It was the first time ive ever had a stylist with curly red hair like me! She explained how important it was to keep my hair hydrated since red hair is so fine, and a lot of other great tips. If I wasn't a relatively wealthy person I wouldn't be able to leave this review. Brunette color and French bob maintenance cut with salon owner Mateo including tip is $600. Not to mention $15 for parking. One of the most expensive brunette color and cuts in Los Angeles. This being said, Mateo deserves every penny, and takes home a small fraction of that $600 after all his expenses as a business owner. The salon is gorgeous, they serve you hot tea, they massage your neck and scalp during the wash, use the finest products, and in my opinion Mateo is the best stylist in the world. It's like he invented hair. I've been to top-tier salons in New York, San Francisco, and other well known curly salons in Los Angeles. No one can touch Mateo. First I got there and they gave me a horrible attitude when I asked them about parking. They sit me down and completely butcher my hair, it is uneven and looks like it was done by a lawn mower. I don't know where the guy Mateo learned to cut hair but he needs to go back to school. Then they tried to make me add a tip in a sneaky way. I am deeply unhappy with the whole experience and will never go there again. It is awesome, he asked me what I want and we went through some pictures and he made my hair the way I always wanted. He explained to me with details what I need to do to keep my hair healthy. I can even go back and have perm only on my roots, that's great. I've done perm a while ago and I ended up having damaged hair, always was scared to do it again but Mateo did the magic, so in love with my new hair and perm, definitely will be coming back. read more

Virgo and more specifically Mateo, ruined my hair. I paid over $700 + tipped 20% for a dry cut, a curly perm and same day processing. My hair was moderately curly before I went in but I asked for more full curls. We went over what I was hoping for and Mateo assured me that it was achievable. Considering that I paid more for him to do my hair as the salon owner, I was thrown off when he left me to his assistants half way through the processing process. Although I could not tell what my hair would look like when dry immediately after the perm since I left with wet hair, the next day was alarming. My hair was frizzy. My cut was crooked. My curls were too tight and some how the bottom half of my hair became straight. That said, i was informed that it would take a week or so to see desired results. So I waited a week but the only thing that changed was that my frizziness increased. I sent the salon 3 separate emails and tried to contact them through their chat twice. No one bothered getting back to me. Considering that I spent almost $1000 on a hair service I was excited to get, only to walk out with a head of hair that was worse than the one I walked in with is really disheartening. I gave Mateo my full trust when I walked into that salon. Anyone with curly hair knows how hard it is sometimes to find a hair stylist who knows what they're doing. I trusted that Mateo would be that person yet 6 months later I'm still wearing hats to hide my hair while figuring out how to fix what he ruined. I've seen his work with other people and know he's capable of doing a good job. That's why I went to him. But I have no idea why they refused to address my concerns and frustrations after it was clear that I did not achieve the results we agreed upon together.u read more
