I had an appointment with Chelsea to do the scalp rx treatment and dry cut, and when I walked in everyone was so kind and welcoming. There is a nice aura to the place, very calming and relaxing. I was on time and they took me to my chair for my dry cut within a few minutes, and Chelsea was very insightful and asked me questions about how I handled my hair and told me how I can achieve the look I want both during the appointment and with the aftercare. After that she took me to a side room for my clay mask and my clarifying shampoo, and it left my hair and scalp feeling very cool and refreshed. She was so sweet and cheerful and she always let me know what she was doing before doing it so that I'm aware and in case I wanted to make any adjustments. I've come here once in the past and I have been using a couple of their products for about a year, highly recommend looking into those as well! I had a great experience. The online appointment system was very user friendly. I found it really helpful that it asks you for inspiration photos of how you want your hair to look. Mateo was super helpful the whole process. I truly feel he is an expert with curls. This appointment changed my hair life!! I was one of those girls that would always blow out or straighten my curls. When I would try and wear my curls, I was using the wrong methods, damaging my hair in the process. Up to this point, I felt like my curls were just sad and lifeless. In looking for a place to help me, I just wanted a good cut and some help! I loved the fact that Virgo's approach was much more natural and simple, yet so effective. The salon was also beautiful. It has a natural, indigenous yet contemporary theme. The use of plants and materials is great. Mateo was warm and welcoming. It really felt like I was talking to a friend who was really listening. He explained what my hair had been doing all these years and what it really needed. He also showed me tips with some of his own products (which smelled and worked amazing). Virgo was not a scam for me! I didn't have fans before Virgo. Now I have people ogling at my curls! I want to cry because MEGAN did such an amazing job on my curly hair!! I went in with what we deemed an "octopus/tentacle bob" (wish I took before pics) since most of my curls were bunched up right above my shoulders like a bob, while my longer layers waved down my back. I will be honest, I am not one to pay a pretty penny for a haircut but I was desperate after 2 bad haircuts ruined my pretty curly long hair. I WILL PAY VIRGO AGAIN AND AGAIN....................... She gave me wonderful tips on how to navigate my curly hair/curl world since she is a curly girl herself! I also tend to avoid salon products since the ones I've purchased in the past were bleh. I trusted Megan and Virgo so much that I asked about their products (which are plant-based and more concentrated, so a little will go a long way). This was my third visit to Virgo and by far the worst haircut I have ever had. This visit I was unable to schedule the stylist I wanted, and was promised all stylists perform a similar cut taught by the owner - which I later found out was not true. I asked for some long layers in the back and face framing layers, but I ended up with distressed curls and an uneven haircut. I was going to go back to get a full readjustment but decided not to risk more damage to my hair. When I asked the salon for a partial refund they blamed me for feeling nervous and supposedly not knowing what I wanted. They also claimed that the stylist kept my same haircut but trimmed the ends which was further from the truth. So disappointing. read more

As you walk in, the vibe and ambiance is boho, chill house, and the colors are warm, natural, and they have a beautiful front outdoor porch / lounge. i hate to write a negative review but unfortunately i had a really bad experience at virgo. i booked a keratin treatment for a saturday morning on a very busy weekend (i had family in town and was leaving for an international work trip for two months the following day). i was really counting on the treatment as i needed it for the trip. i arrived to my appointment 7 minutes late and was turned away, despite the salon having a 10 minute grace period. i offered to do whatever i could to help make the treatment happen including taking on some of the work myself and reassuring the stylist that i wouldn't be upset if it didn't come out perfectly, but was told that the 7 minute tardiness made it impossible for her to do, and she couldn't reschedule for another time in the day. i genuinely feel bad for the stylist because she cited not having enough help and too much of a packed schedule to be able to juggle two clients at once. i do fault the salon though - it sounds like there was actually no way for her to be able to attend to my appointment and the rest of her schedule adequately, even if i'd arrived on time... so frustrating because with a packed schedule and upcoming trip, i very much planned around this appointment and was rushing to get there. i know it is my fault for having been 7 mins late but didn't think it would cause me to lose the appointment. i called other salons in the area and thankfully was able to book a keratin treatment shortly afterwards at Park & Eve, which is very close in DTLA. i arrived and found the stylist who took me in is Megan Bailey - a curly hair specialist who used to work at Virgo. lol and had cut my hair there. Megan is great and if you don't want to get turned away or are looking for a great haircut or treatment, she is at Park & Eve. bummer! virgo has a lot of potential and i wish i could recommend it. read more

I had my hair cut here for a couple years, mostly with Megan. Then we stopped being able to pick the stylist we wanted, and I ended up with someone else for a trim. I'm not picky and curly hair is generally forgiving, but the cut I got was so strange. I asked for layers and it was just two layers, one like a bowl and one longer, with very little evenness. I had to go back for an adjustment which they accommodated me with kindly and promptly, but the adjustment was once again poorly done. My bangs were about two inches longer on one side than the other. I couldn't risk another poor cut and was luckily able to find out that Megan had moved over to Park and Eve in DTLA, so thats where I'll be going now. I have 3C hair and did not feel like my stylist knew how to proper care for it. I spoke up about how my hair takes product & she didn't listen. When we were toward the end of the appointment, it was clear that my hair was not looking good. She suggested that I get a keratin treatment to make my hair more manageable. I left feeling discouraged and disappointed. I ended up washing my hair as soon as I got home & styling it my usual way. Don't recommend this place for people with thick, 3C/4A Afro hair. read more

I went and saw the owner Mateo, a few months ago. He was very good and game my hair a fair work out, at a salty price. I went back recently and since I wanted a refresher, I decided to see a stylist and save a couple of bucks, assuming they would be trained by Mateo. I was booked for "stylist 2" (you cannot choose a particular stylist, nor you know who you are booking, when you book online), which is still $135 before tip, and got ... well, nothing i could not have done myself. they did not blend my layers, as I asked them to do, but just literally shortened a couple of locks (and mighty unevenly), leaving the tip blunt so it stands out, and that was it. they did, though, try to sell me all kind of products, which felt quite pressuring. so, I will no go back unless I see Mateo. watch out for the stylists! read more

Now my curls are so soft and bouncy I can't believe it. Shontia was my hairstylist. She was radiant and kind and super helpful. She gave me tips on how to take care of my hair based on my hair type and hair porosity. She patiently trimmed off all my dead split ends and gave me a nice shape up. My hair hasn't felt this soft and bouncy in years. The staff here is super nice and helpful, and took time to explain all the products they have and which would be best for my hair type. I am appalled by the lack of customer service, and the amount I had to pay for a terrible cut / highlight job. With the amount that I've paid, I expected my hair to look close to my reference photos, and to receive proper customer service. However--after a week--all the dye washed out, and after paying hundreds of dollars, I was told to "use Overtone" to fix my own hair myself, and Mateo (the salon owner and the one who worked on my hair) was unwilling to see me in person and wrote lengthy emails to shoo me off. I felt pressured by Mateo to make adjustments to the original style I requested, and the end result looked bad and I walked out of the salon feeling uncomfortable and dissatisfied. This is terrible customer service for a business that relies on customer service. I was more than willing to work with them if they were willing to work with me, but with the sheer lack of respect and communication, I had to escalate this in a different manner. I have never --in all my years of going to a hair salon-- encountered such poor service and an unwillingness to provide a proper solution. It's total disrespect. You guys are terrible at meeting a customer's request, needs, or hearing them out. This is completely unacceptable, and I feel scammed for the amount that I paid for this AWFUL job. I have 3A/3B curly hair. I was really excited to find Virgo as it can be SO hard to find a salon that caters to curly hair. I've been to the salon a few times and had great experiences with an RX conditioning treatment and also a light trim. Unfortunately my coloring appointments were a miss. While the staff is friendly and seem experienced, I could not get a resulting color similar to the ideal photos I had shown them either time. The first time I went in for color I asked for a cinnamon/reddish brown shade and showed pictures. My hair color came out a sort of bright red with dark roots. They ended up correcting it the next day and it came out a really pretty cherry coke color I was happy with. I came back a few months later to get it toned back to that shade (as it had faded over time). Again I showed an ideal color photo of what I wanted. Instead, the color came out sort of dark brown with lighter brown undertones. Not a bad color, just not close to what I had wanted or showed a picture of. I ended up just emailing and asking if they had product recommendations that could help get it to the color I was hoping for. Pretty disappointing experience to drive 4 hours in total (from SD to LA) and pay a decent amount to not get what you came for. These may have been isolated instances and not something that happens often, but I would recommend being very specific if you plan on getting your hair colored at this salon. read more

As someone who is biracial with 3b/3c hair I cannot tell you how many times it's been fried here in LA when I try to go blonde. That was NOT the case with Mateo. He is truly an expert. My hair looked amazing afterwards and Mateo did a great job of explaining upkeep, what we could do going forward, etc. (he even wrote the directions out on a sheet for me!). Chelsea also did an amazing dry cut for me. Is it pricy? Yes. But that's because the people here know what they're doing and are truly passionate about hair. I went to get my first curly cut here because the pictures they post looked amazing. Paid a total of $240 for dry cut and styling. It was not worth it it looked exactly the same as when I style it at home with my drug store products. If you are expecting those big beautiful voluminous results you won't get them unless you're paying for the 500 + experiences. It may be worth it if you have the money to pay for it. Eh. Have had my hair colored here a couple of times and won't be going back. My stylist applied my color and then walked away to help other clients, never to be seen again. His assistant, who was lovely, finished the job but they charge extra to style. As in I paid $400 to have my hair colored and I then walked out of the salon with wet hair!! I'm not sure why I went back a second time. Color looked ok but it was definitely over processed in parts. read more

The salon itself is really beautiful and all staff were friendly and kind. I am so bummed that I don't love the cut- it's way shorter than I asked for with a weird unflattering shape but the biggest problem: they cut it dry when it was frizzy and not properly curling, washed it, and then let me go with sopping wet hair. As soon as it dried, it was jarringly obvious that many strands were too long for the cut and it looked awful. I took scissors to it because I didn't have time to go back in. While in the salon, I asked for them to dry it and they refused - no effort to help a customer. They should not be sending curly haired customers out into the world before the curls dry so they can see how the curls fall with the cut. So sad about the short length. Never again. read more

After years and years of dreaming of curls I finally found Virgo Salon and am so glad I did. The staff is so nice and attentive. Mateo and the whole Virgo team walked me through the whole process of achieving a natural, beach-wave-type of perm. I did have to make multiple trips/appointments- for a consult and then to do a pre-perm treatment, but I appreciated their honesty and care to make sure my hair was healthy throughout the whole perming process. The perm itself was pretty quick and you get to relax in the outdoor garden while it's processing. Also, the whole space is gorgeous ... decor, music and vibe is on-point and they sell GREAT smelling products. I left feeling super relaxed, pampered, and with bed-head curls of my dreams. Expect to pay $$$ and learn a brand new hair routine, but if a perm is what you're after, I can't recommend Virgo higher! read more

Two days ago, looking for a salon close to my home for a curly cut, I found Virgo Salon--I'm a Virgo, and I have curly hair! Must be fate! And it absolutely was. Mateo, who is kind and gentle and brilliant, gave me a great cut, and in talking about how I wanted to bring my grey through and get rid of my old faded color but not wanting to spend weeks being orange between treatments, he told me that the organic, plant-based products they used could do it in one day, and he happened to have an afternoon off two days hence. Thank you, Universe, for setting that up. After six hours of chatting and comfortable silence, I came out looking like the magical fairy queen I am inside--with NO DAMAGE to the curly locks. I never have to dye my hair again if I don't want to, and I LOVE it. People have been stopping me on the street to tell me how much they love my hair. I can't recommend Mateo highly enough, for curly hair and color. He is an artist. Seriously. He went through and separated the individual grey hairs from the brown, and you would never know my hair is colored. He told me after our epic afternoon that if I wanted a few more foils to let him know, and even though I never want to bother anyone, I was comfortable enough with Mateo that when I saw that there could be a little more grey in front, I asked for more. He was on the same page, and he carved out time for me the following evening to add some more grey in, and it's perfection. I can't pass a mirror without giggling. I'm in loooove with my cut! Booked a cut and style with Elana. She asked all the appropriate questions to make sure I got the cut that I wanted. She did a dry cut which is my preference and sent me to wash with Ashanti. Ashanti then took over and styled my hair and I loved it. The only thing I don't like is the product they use at the salon. It was really drying to my hair although the hold was good. That's the only thing I would change, and can be avoided by just styling my own hair! I highly recommend any curly girl to go here! So decided to try out this new hair salon in the Arts District and i initially went in for a deep condition treatment and after talking with the stylist she told me i needed a cut. With the 30minutes time allotted for my appointment she still promised we could get everything done during the session. After trusting her with my hair she left me with a completely uneven cut, extra frizz that i never had before and a completely botched haircut overall. She cut way over a trim and there are so many strands that are out of place. I am so devastated. It's my fault for allowing someone who I didn't know cut my hair but figuring this curly salon would have top hair stylists work here I felt like I could trust them.
