Came to Viruya's for the first time a few weeks ago. Though there were some odd moments like when one of the employees started making a tiktok (lol), it was generally fabulous! The food was nostalgic and soul-warming, even though it was my first time at a Honduran restaurant. My partner ordered a baleada con carne and a cheese pupusa and also enjoyed his meal. In terms of service and ambience, the other review about the place being "overall lackadaisical" is 100% spot on, though the care put into the dishes themselves helped make the overall experience still generally quite pleasant. read more

Wow! Some of the best pupusas and plantains I've had! At first glance the pupusas seem small, but they are very good quality and filled me up. The plantains were perfectly ripe, sweet and fried just right. It is very obvious that this place takes pride in their food. Everything was great quality and cooked just right. Decided to give this spot a try to their pupusas. We also ordered empanadas, the pupusas were not bad. It was the empanadas that really stole the show and were much better. I would comeback to try other dishes that are more popular. read more

The best way to describe this place is that there's an overall lackadaisical nature of this place. Despite there being only a few customers when I got in, the service was very lethargic. The seats have a bunch of tears in them, the salsa bar is completely empty, USB error noises in their music, there's random junk on several the tables, they don't even bother to put soup in their bathroom soup dispensers. After waiting a long time, we finally got our food. I must say that the portion sizes, for the most part, are generous. The food itself was slightly above average quality. As a Mexican who grew up surrounded by great food, I'm not easily impressed but Viruya's Honduran Food absolutely blew me away. I tried three dishes: the Baleada con Carne, the Empanadas, and the Carne con Tajadas and every single bite was incredible. The Baleada con Carne was perfectly balanced, soft homemade tortilla, refried beans, chorizos with egg, creamy avocado, melted cheese. It reminded me of a Mexican burrito but with its own delicious Honduran twist. The empanadas were crispy on the outside and packed with rich, seasoned filling and that Carne con Tajadas (steak and plantain chips topped with cabbage, crema, salsa, and pickled onions) was something else, like loaded nachos but with Honduran flavor. The service was also stellar. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and genuinely proud of their food. You can taste the love in every dish. If you love Mexican food, you'll definitely fall in love with Honduran cuisine here, rich, comforting, and full of bold flavors. The workers seem so excited to share their cuisine with us. They discussed the menu and explained how the food compares with traditional Mexican. The menu isn't as large as some local Mexican restaurants; it's 2 pages. I chose a chicken and plantain dish. The chicken was absolutely fantastic! It was seasoned so well and juicy without being greasy. The portion was quite large, too. I really enjoyed the plantains and tomatoes and salad, too. It was a good mixture of flavors and textures. My son had papusas. He seemed to enjoy his food, as well. The passionfruit aguas frescas was yummy, too. The staff is so nice. I'd definitely go back and suggest you try it! read more

I always enjoy trying food from different cultures. I had never had Honduran food before and, with all positive reviews, I thought I should give this place a try. It's similar to Mexican food, but not exactly the same. The chicken that I had was fall off the bone moist with unique and delicious flavors that separate it from Mexican food. As a bonus, they had 3 different Honduran beers to go along with the experience. All were good, but the Barena is what I recommend if you are only going to have one. The service was friendly and they checked up on me regularly. I also liked the layout of the restaurant. The high backed booths allowed privacy that you don't always get at restaurants. While they didn't have live entertainment while I was there, they have a nice stage that's perfect for it. I look forward to going back soon. read more

This place was great, so much flavor! Atmosphere was good and quiet. Started off with some tacos dorados which was like really good taquitos with delicious sauce and I think pickled veg on the side, and some pupusas that were really good! My wife thought the pupusas were the best thing about the meal, she couldn't stop eating them. My 13 YO son is picky and got the arroz con pollo which he really liked, and wife got the chicken and banana which was really good! Delicious seasoning and fantastic sauces. The chef there also made some tamales fresh that day and hooked us up with one (they were amazing), she was really nice :) The portions were big enough for leftovers and they were still really good the following day or two Overall great experience, will be back! read more

The experience at Viruya's was simply amazing. Wonderful family run place with homely style cooking so everything is freshly made. Brenda our server was fabulous and provided very attentive service. We had the Papusas that were so fresh that they melted in the mouth. The Pastelitos were cruncy and very flavorful with the right amount of ground beef and potatoes, and we could'nt leave without trying the Baleda which was equally impressive. read more

We were a group of 9. We were impressed with the beautiful mural welcoming us in right away. The owner greeted us warmly and was very friendly. Our plates were quite varied and the food was warm and flavorful. I especially loved the broth of their mondongo soup. My brother gorged on the fried fish and my mom was happy with the chicharrón and the maracuya drink. We will definitely be returning! Though I've only been to Costa Rica, Venezuela and Panama, never Honduras, there were some similarities and this really took me back to some great memories. I was tasting my first Honduran food and had asked for suggestions. The owner guided me to order Pastelitos or Tacos dorados. The main entrees had huge portions. (The Pastelitos and Tacos dorados are usually ordered as appetizers.) I have had empanadas in the past and found them too greasy. The Honduran version was delicious and not greasy at all. The three small Pastelitos were displayed very attractively surrounded by shredded lettuce and some pickled sweet peppers. The meat and potato filling was flavorful without being hot. This was a big plus for me. I was seated quickly, my order was taken and within a very reasonable amount of time I had my freshly prepared food. I will return with my son to order one of the large main dishes. They looked delicious. The women next to me raved about their chicken entree, but I failed to ask them which one.
