I was excited to find a Japanese hair salon in this area but be warned. The owner and other stylists are japanese but they do not use the latest style/skill that I'm accustomed to at Japanese hair salons. I actually felt I got a bad mullet hair cut from a small Asian hair salon that runs both business hair and nail salons. The three stars are for hisumis sweet personality and accommodating each client. Im not too happy with my hair cut. First of all, I would change the price range from "$" to "$$". $50 for a women's haircut - plus tip - doesn't belong in the same category as a $17 job from Supercuts. That said, I'm not counting that against them in my review. Hirami is a sweet stylist who listens to what you want and is cautious about taking off too much length. She starts conservatively and then asks if you want more off. The next thing I liked about her is that she steps back and "edits" her work, saying "I could make your bangs a little shorter, shall we try an extra quarter inch?" "Would you like me to try this pomade to add some texture? Let me show you how to do it yourself." And then her small tweaks make big improvements. This review is for Kathy. She has been doing my nails (mani and pedi) for 15 years now. I know this because it was just before my wedding that I found her to do my nails and I've been with her ever since. She is the most accommodating and kind person. My nails break easily and she is the only one to help them stay strong and look good. She even helped me last year when I broke my finger and I thought my nail was going to fall off. I love catching up with her every time and then falling asleep in her chair for the few moments I have as a mom of 3 young kids. I highly recommend you spend your time with her! I've been going to Hiromi Z. at Visage for the past three years - she does great hair cuts. I'm in my 50's, but her haircuts make me look up to date. She's also the best colorist I've been too - that's maybe an art as well as a science, and she's very good at it. I'm adding to my review the fact that my 26 year old son now goes to her too. He had to wait for his hair to grow out from a draedful haircut with another salon. The difference in the two haircuts was really dramatic; Hiromi did a terrific job. From what I can see, her haircuts 'grow out' really well too. BTW, I should also mention that parking there is pretty decent; it's in a small mall, kitty corner from Whole Foods. Since parking in Walnut Creek is generally awful, it's nice to not have to hassle with parking there. read more

I love Kathy. She has been doing my pedicures for years. I will never go to anyone else. Her pedicures are relaxing, thorough and immaculate. I used to have a skin problem on my left foot and she made it all better. When you get into Kathy's chair, you can count on staying there for about an hour. Shimako is the best hair stylist that I've ever had. I've been commuting from Dublin to Walnut Creek for 2 years just to make a hair cut and and highlights from Shimako. I've never been disappointed with the results. After many years of trials and errors with hundreds of hair stylists, I finally got the hair color that compliments my skin tone and my style and the hair cut that brings out the best features of my face. Shimako's Japanese attention to details makes each hair style that I've gotten from her simply impeccable. I don't know what I will do if I relocate to the East Cost. I'm one of those people who live in C.C. county but go elsewhere for my food, shopping, and personal services. The weird thing is that I read the review for Shimako and didn't take action 'cause I have been going to SF to get my hair needs met. A real drag on a rainy day. I moved out of state 4 years ago and she's still the only person I trust cutting my hair. I make it to the Bay Area a couple of times a year and I always make a point of seeing her. My haircuts last the long wait between appt. Shimako has true passion for her profession. She studies the latest technique for hair coloring and cutting. I have thick, straight Asian hair (lots of it) and I've always had problems finding a hairstylist that knew how to cut my hair in a style that I liked. Went to Hiromi based off of Yelp review to get my coarse Asian hair re-layered. She was very nice, fun to chat with, listened to what I wanted, and definitely understood Asian hair. She did the wash, cut, and dry herself. While drying she also did some quick styling work while giving me tips for when I get home to do it myself. Very helpful. The salon was very clean. I recently moved to Walnut Creek, was looking for a Japanese hair stylist in this area, and found Hiromi. I went to the salon at my appointment time, but nobody told me how long I had to wait for my hair cut. Hiromi was working on her customer's hair color and didn't talk to me. After about 20 min., Hitomi came up to me and told me that she wanted to look at my hair first. I wanted to cut my hair medium, but she suggested me to cut my hair bob, so I said ok. While she was cutting my hair, she stepped out to take phone calls several times. I wonder if she remembered where she was cutting when she came back to cut my hair. Even though I showed her several picture of the hair cut that I wanted, she didn't cut my hair like these pictures. My hair turned out to a simple bob that you may be able to get from a cheap hair salon like supercuts. I didn't think the hair cut was worth $50.00 that she charged me. I didn't like my hair cut at all, so I decided to go to another hair salon in SF next day to fix it. I should have gone to the hair salon in SF at the first place. read more

I've been getting my nails done by Kathy for about 4 years now, and she is the best! I do the pink and white acrylics, and I only have to get them filled once a month. Even when they are a few weeks old, I still get compliments on them! Not only is she good at what she does, she also wants her clients to have a relaxing experience. They have lots of good trash mags there, and she works in silence b/c she knows I'm a mom of 3 young kids and I treasure a little bit of quiet time. I came to Shimako when I had a big hair problem - my ends were a very different color from the roots. Shimako died my hair brown to make the two match (I finally gave in and admitted at 26 that I was a brown-haired woman rather than a golden-haired girl), and did a wonderful job. She picked three different shades, and weaved them together. It really couldn't have looked better. I was so impressed. She really is a master colorist. It cost about $100, four years ago.
