The14" size was perfect for our family of three. We ordered a three topping deep dish and it was LOADED with toppings. Maybe it's just not my type of pizza. I thought the crust was flavorless, even though we asked for it well-done. The sauce tasted like slightly sweetened tomato paste. The over-abundance of cheese was ok when it was piping hot, but congealed quickly and was translucent on the leftovers (which I gladly donated to my husband). read more

I called ahead at 5:00 for pizza to be done at 6:30 pizza was just going in the oven when I got there the other one had already been sitting around waiting while the other one was cooking. In comparison to both the Ada and Comstock Park locations this Vitales is lacking a bit. I love the pizzas here, and they have some great drink options too, however, it's nicknamed (apologies for the slang) "The Ghetto Vitales" for a reason. Simply put, it's not in the best neighborhood. That being said, I have never felt personally unsafe here, it just attracts a much different crowd than the other locations. I don't mind it here, but I would probably avoid coming in late at night by myself. I recently stopped in for a Team Trivia night with 3 friends. We split the spinach dip which was delicious! I'd rate it a 9/10 and the Sampler Platter, which I would rate a 6.5/10 (I learned I don't like jalapeño poppers!) Our server was attentive enough, and I was satisfied with my drink (Tall Vodka Soda) but I had to ask multiple times for the limes I wanted. Trivia was fun enough! The pizzas are great here, and you cant go wrong with cheesy bread! I definitely recommend ordering to go as this location unfortunately does not offer delivery. read more

Stopped in for a pickup order and watched the manager berate an employee right in front of me and another customer because she made a mistake in counting the money. These are internal issues to be handled internally, not in view of customers. This was reckless humiliation without concern for how that employee felt. I can't imagine what's done behind closed doors if vitale's finds publicly beating employees acceptable. I won't be back, and I'll Be sure to tell anyone considering vitale's about how they treat their employees. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

Went here with about 40 parents and soccer kids. They put us in the general area. Looks like they moved buildings recently. Waitstaff was very nice. They were organized, but only had 2 people for 40. They knew days in advance. It did take about 2 hours from the time we arrived before we received our food. I think in general people liked the place. The pizza sauce is definitely unique. It's much sweeter than what I'm used to. After a couple of yummy slices, I was done. The parmesan breadsticks have quite a bit of dry parmesan on it. My teenage daughter loved it and I thought it was a bit too much. It's a big place and the bar area was packed on Saturday night. read more

We were a group of 11 which they accommodated on a Monday evening. The Bartender was awesome! Our waiter took good care of us. Lots of pizzas, a couple of dinner salads--all good. I have been a patron of Vitale's on Leonard for over 40 years. Over the past (5) years I've noticed they have drastically reduced the amount of protein/ meat you receive. I would submit the amount of meat on the Sub I bought this evening is about 20 % of what it was five years ago. You literally get almost no meat. I bought a sub today because Sam's Son took over a few weeks ago. This will be the last sub I buy for $ 13+ dollars with almost no meat. Subway gives you more! read more

We are purposefully supporting local businesses given how hard they have had it during COVID. Sadly this place will no longer be on our list. They gave us the completely wrong order on take out and while they agreed to make us what we originally ordered after I drove back from my house they did nothing else to apologize or make up for it. What is more concerning is none of the staff had the masks on nor were they enforcing that guests wear theirs. I care too much about my safety and the safety of others to support places who can't enforce a simple mask requirement especially when working in close proximity to food. read more

On our last night in Michigan, our friend from Grand Rapids decides to pick us up some pizza from Vitale's to eat at home, so I didn't get a chance to check out the joint myself. For quite some time before now, I've been longing to try the famous Chicken & Jalepeno pizza my bf always bragged about having on his last visit to Grand Rapids. I really didn't know what I was getting into. Here's the pizza breakdown. The crust: thick, tasty and very, very filling. One can be satiated off its crust alone! The sauce: a melodic twist of sweet, tangy, and spicy. The chicken: surprisingly...very tender. It literally falls apart in your mouth. The jalepenos: spicy, very spicy...I was sad there weren't enough jalepenos on every slice. I for one could only eat 2 slices and I made sure I chose the slices with the most jalepenos. This pizza is so tasty and so delicious that no additional toppings are necessary. So skip the parmesan & and the red pepper flakes...you'd be insulting the Vitale chef by adding anything else to their pizzas! Vitale's is definitely a place to get pizza even if you're just passing through Grand Rapids...so do it! Once you have it, you'll be dreaming about it the next day and you'll be happy you found this place on Yelp. read more

Bad service... waitress didn't want to be there. Didn't tell us the specials, and when asked what she recommnended she said Burgers, Pizza or Pasta. When I asked her what she normally ordered, she said it's all good. Really? Don't you even eat here? The pizza was bad. I got the supreme, and although I enjoyed the cooking on the crust, the sauce was bland, unseasoned, and could've been out of a jar. The pasta was served cold, and we went it back. Although the manager did stop by the table to ask if everything was okay... I feel it was the obligatory "touch every table" and he hadn't been made aware of our unhappiness. However, he did figure it out. He comp'd my friend's meal (which she didn't eat at all)...and tried to make restitution but it was too late. My friend recommended a 1 star or lower. However, since the manager's did such a good job, I'll raise that to a 2 Star. I will be back for a further review... but perhaps I'll wait for a little training to get done... and then not bring my picky friend! 2 Stars... with an updated review in the near future. read more

The toppings are awesome and the sauce is the best I've tasted in Grand Rapids. I have a large family, and we usually go with two of the $11 16" one toppings. A great deal! If my film would let me, I would eat pizza from here four days a week for dinner. A great restaurant that got old and became the neighborhood sports bar. There is enough of the old restaurant in its DNA to have some great takeout. My wife would order the Manicotti as her last meal on this earth. The chef salad is another favorite. Beyond that it's typical pizza place. Which is all fine. The bar is a bar. Has Keno and TVs. Miss the restaurant and the Spitini especially. The garlic bread is weird. They make it from whatever buns is laying around. Like hamburger buns and sesame seed buns. It's odd. So disappointed Yesterday i went to Vitale's on Leonard on my lunch break and i got a 14 inch pizza with pepperoni and sausage on it. After i got back to work i took a video of my pizza tell me why there was a roach on my freakin pizza. By time i was able to call Vitale's back they were closed. So i called them today at 11am right when they opened to tell them what happened. One of their employees told me they were going to call me back and never did. So i called them back and ask for a manager i told the manager what i had found on my pizza and i told them i had a video of it and i have my receipt. The manager stated do you still have the pizza? I stated NO!!! Why would i keep a pizza with a roach on it. The manager stated we never had that problem and NO ONE could have put that on your pizza. I told the manager that i want my money back he stated i can't give you anything unless you have the pizza even those i still have my receipt and the video. i never had a problem when i got food from there I'm so pissed Vitale's is one of my favorite pizza places. read more

But the cook thing is their staff is made of steel, I went her for a drink with a friend and the girl next to us was wasted, she went to stand up and dropped her drink glass smack dab on the floor, breaking it with a loud crash. The bartender didn't flinch, he just motioned to the bus boy to clean it up. I pointed out that it startled the heck out of me, and he shrugged and simple said "it's not the first time tonight, and probley won't be the last, I'm used to it." Doing my best to support local business' during the COVID crisis. Most do an admirable job to look out for the welfare of the patrons, AND, employees. My experience with Vitale's shows me this is no such business. No employees wearing masks, no control of the number of customers coming into the small carryout area, no organization to keep things moving efficiently so people aren't waiting forever for their items, no system for sanitizing pens, and so on. On top of all that, they completely did not get a thing right with my order. Will likely be taking my business to other local pizza places. read more

It pains me to give a four star rating here. Vitale's is one of my favorite places to get pizza, but the pizza wasn't the issue here today. My youngest took me and my wife out for my birthday today and this was where I wanted to go. My son ordered the linguini salmon with a salad. He said it tasted ok, but a little bland. My wife ordered the fish and chips. She ate a few fries and a piece of fish and said she was full. I tried a fry and didn't care for them much. I figured she had a couple cheese bread pieces and she was just full. It wasn't until we got home she said the fish was terrible. Now I ordered the cheese bread and a deluxe pizza. Both of mine were exactly what I went there for. The cheese bread was very tasty with the right amount of herbs and cheese. My pizza was just how I like it. Nice doughy crust around the edge and a little crispy on the bottom. A nice amount of items on the top. Now we did go to the bar building and not the restaurant building. If you go there, you'll see they are separate buildings. I'm not saying that should matter. Just giving you as much information as possible. Our waitress was very attentive and the food did come out piping hot. My advice would be, stick to the pizza here, but I'm sure they have other items that are great. This place has really gone downhill. It was literally my first stop on my way from the airport, their manicotti was my favorite. Pretty disappointing. It was lunch time and the main restaurant was closed so I went to the sports bar side. The atmosphere was that of a dive bar and the lady bartender was pretty surly, I am really glad I didn't sit at the bar. The food itself... That was pretty sad. The portions are much bigger, like 50% bigger, but the quality was sub par. The ricotta cheese was really lumpy and bland and the sauce tasted right out of a can, maybe Cisco? The melted cheese on top of the dish was not baked the way I remembered and was rubbery. I couldn't really eat the manicotti but the garlic bread was pretty good. The salad was also edible. I was pretty throw off by the $2.50 charge for some soda water with a splash of bitters but whatever. The waitress was really nice, she sat down and talked with me about why I didn't want to eat the food or take it with me (I only had a few bites) and she gave me a $2 discount. That waitress is the only reason why I am giving this 3 stars instead or two or one. I am actually glad that the food isn't good anymore as I will no longer crave it. Once, I actually called them to see if it were possible to ship me an order (it was not), I loved it so much. Those days are gone now... Sigh.. read more

I used to go here several years ago and LOVED it, so when I was back in town I was looking forward to visiting again. My ENTIRE experience was horrible. Not only were they out of most liquor (no Jameson) but it took 15 minutes to order a rum and coke when sitting at the bar. Wanted to order food, was never given a menu, which didn't matter because we sat for 30 minutes without the bartender ever coming back over anyway. Ended up finishing my drink in an attempt to get the bartender to come back over, it still took over 15 minutes for the bartender to come back (so now it's been 45 minutes) and just ended up asking for the check to leave. Going somewhere else as this whole experience was ridiculous. They weren't that busy, only 7 people sitting at the bar total, bartender (first name started with G) just sat over by the register chit chatting with other employees. It's so sad to have this experience at a place I formally loved. Talked to several of the regulars and was told this is the new standard experience at this location. 10/10 would NOT recommend. read more

Two friends and I got to Vitale's late Sunday afternoon, and ate in the restaurant adjacent to the sports bar. We ordered drinks, and a 16" thin-crust pizza with meatballs, mushrooms, green peppers, and artichoke hearts. We were seated immediately at a clean table for four, leaving us some extra room. There was a giant party of 20 or so at a long table nearby, but service was prompt and attentive. Drinks arrived very quickly, and the pizza soon after. The pizza was wonderful. It was cut into 9 pieces, just right for our party of three to have two pieces each, and take the last three pieces home. The crust was thin and crisp, and the toppings were abundant. We couldn't see the cheese, sauce, or crust for the toppings! The combination of toppings, sauce, and cheese tasted really great, and I'm a pizza snob originally from Chicago :-) The room quieted down considerably after the big party left, making the service even more attentive. Pizza: an ongoing quest for the best. Vitale's: terribly disappointing. I really don't have to qualify as a pizza lover/snob. Waaaayyyy back in the day, I worked at one of Chicago's busiest (and BEST) pizza joints downtown. Even farther back, as a kid, it was a daily battle with my mother to insure I was eating a mini frozen pizza for dinner. Every night of the week. I usually won. So when I did my research and came up with Vitale's, I was expecting decent, maybe even good pizza. Heck, Yelpers don't usually steer me wrong...but ohhhhhhhhh nooooooooo. 1st No-No: the grease, OY, the grease! Greasy on top of our toppings, and when I picked up a slice to plop onto my plate, GREASE UNDERNEATH. So much grease, it soaked the crust, leaving a thick orange residue on our carry-out box. WTF? It's not cool to want to throw up BEFORE your meal. 2nd No-No: the sauce, EEK, the sauce! It was sickeningly sweet--like, just why? Pizza is not dessert, nor is tomato sauce my sweet-tooth go-to. Eww. It's like this pizza was made for people without tastebuds. 3rd No-No: no spinach. They don't have spinach as a topping. Why is it that any knowing Chicago pizzeria offers spinach as a topping, and GR has none? Whyyyyyyy?!? 4th No-No: no delivery. Which means I have to not be lazy to have a lazy dinner. This practically defeats the purpose of "ordering pizza." The only saving grace? The mozzarella sticks I ordered on a whim. They were actually still hot by the time I got home--perhaps because they were super thick, super breaded, and super salty. My girlfriend, son, and I came in for a drink and an appetizer. We sat at the bar, where we were met by Malu (sp?). Malu was amazing. He was friendly, funny, and personable. Made the whole experience very enjoyable. The cheese bread was delightfully greasy, and came with a nice house made ranch. The rest of the wait staff was equally friendly and quick to meet our requests for extra sides of sauce or to change a TV or two to the game that we wanted to watch. The atmosphere was basically like any other franchise sports bar. It would have gotten a higher score except for two things: 1. The smoking area is directly on the path from the parking lot to the restaurant. There really isn't a way to avoid it if you're coming from a certain way, and it's a very narrow corner with two big chairs. My 7 year-old got a nice face full of second-hand smoke. 2. The marinara tasted like someone dumped an entire bag of sugar into the sauce while it was cooking. It was completely inedible. I don't know what kind of place that's known for its Italian fare could be proud of that. The wait staff is what really made this visit for me and what guaranteed a return visit. I won't be bringing my child back and I won't be ordering anything with marinara, but I will be back. read more
