I contracted with Alvita to care for my mother during the last two months of her life after she was injured in a fall. I paid for 24 hour home care seven days a week. Other than Fabienne, I found the caregivers sorely lacking in the most basic of qualities such as companionship and emotional support. Also, other than Fabienne, the one on one care for which they were hired (toileting, hygiene assistance, dressing, grooming, feeding, etc) was mostly delegated by them to the staff at the assisted living facility where my mother resided, which negated the whole point of hiring them in the first place. Chronic lateness was also the norm. Most arrived 10-20 minutes late for the start of the night shift The night shift crew was especially problematic. In addition to generally not performing the basic tasks for which they were hired ("it's not my job" was the common refrain, even though it literally was their job), they often did not even stay in the same room as my mother who was a fall risk. Some slept on the sofa in the living room during the night shift, some spent the night shift doing schoolwork in a separate room, and some spent hours of the night shift on their phone in the hallway outside of the apartment. The complaints became so numerous from the staff at the assisted living facility and from the hospice nurses that I eventually had to change agencies for the night shift. Three of the low points during the Alvita night shift require special mention. (1) There was the night that my mother sat in her own feces for the entirety of the night. When Hospice arrived in the morning, the waste was dry and hard and had been there all night, despite a 12 hour Alvita shift. (2) Many nights, my mother was put to bed at 7 PM for convenience sake without any social interaction or kindness on the part of the aide. (3) My mother suffered a skin tear on her arm the night after I complained about the aides sleeping on the job. I was told that she injured herself, but there are no witnesses other than the Alvita aide involved. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Fabienne. She was the primary Alvita daytime aide for my mother. Fabienne went above and beyond the call of duty. She exuded kindness and compassion. She took the utmost care of my mother and treated her with dignity and respect. When Fabienne was on the job, the staff at the assisted living facility and the hospice staff took a break because everyone knew that she had everything under control. This is the level of care advertised by Alvita and the level of care that I paid for, but only Fabienne met the mark. Not only did she meet expectations, but she blew everyone away with her level of care.

It's a lovely place that doesn't feel like an assisted living facility (it feels more like an upscale hotel or a country club but does feel homey) and is well-maintained and clean. I waited to write this review so I would be able to reflect more clearly on the experience. Mostly, my father's and my family's time there was not very positive. I am leaving the two stars for those staff members that did treat my father with kindness, compassion and understanding. We decided to put my father on hospice so we could access more daily care and less medical testing ect. However, what we observed is less concern, less care and less compassion. My father's care was not easy as he had little mobility and dementia/delirium the last few weeks was significant. Hospice did provide pharmacological intervention but did not provide much support or communication with the family. Fortunately, my family was able to spend every day with him and provide him with the support required to make him as comfortable as possible. The most disturbing was that my father was placed at the end of the hall and after this daily visit once per shift by the nurse, there was no check- ins by the aides other than the alert bell that he could ring. The thing is when we rang, it was longer then 10 to 15 minutes before anyone would show up and at times it could be 30 to 40 minutes. No aide was stationed outside in the hall, so I spent much of my time searching for help. There were four occasions, I found them on their cell phones in empty rooms. Rarely, did not see supervisors on the floor making periodic checks on both him and staff. Basically, any assistance received other than the bare minimum, was mostly reactive not proactive. I would like to thank the nurse that did sit with him a few times during the end as his anxiety was severe and also the staff members that alerted me when his needs not being met. In the end, an aide assigned to my dad daily was treating me harshly, that I hired a private aide to stay with my father so that I could take a break from what appeared to be passive aggressive cruelty. This aide refused my father his last cup of coffee on his last day telling him the kitchen was closed, as my brother showed up and retrieved a cup in that kitchen. Previously, I did ask supervisor to speak to her but was told, that it was happening. I often wonder how she treated him while I was not present as he was somewhat helpless. Unfortunately, taking care of both my parents, I witnessed other facilities, and it is my opinion as a society, we must do better with the elderly. Working with the elderly and health care is a very difficult job. Owners and administrators must do better providing a caring emotionally and monetary rewarding environment for their staff. The response to these reviews asks the writer to call and discuss. Again, reactive, so I will offer my further input only if it is a proactive response.

The joy on their faces was absolutely priceless and made the entire experience incredibly rewarding. You sign up on their website, watch a video then choose what you want to volunteer for. Once you commit, they'll send you an email the day before reminding you to show up. Nice thing is that once you sign up and volunteer, you can track your hours and events easily. I have no idea why anyone wants to volunteer, or needs to, but these guys cover Jersey, so at least you have a nice breadth of different activities you want to volunteer for. For instance I'm a computer geek, so planting trees all over the place would probably leave me with one foot in the ground! Sure the air will be cleaner, but i'll be mulch! However, I was able to find an activity that let me use my Nerdly talents instead.
