Fantastic bakery nearby Miss Sarit's place of work (SO-SUPER-DUPER jealous!) I was drawn in by the dough-y roll with chocolate & nuts and other stuff in it that was on display in the window (shameless tactic... Lure me in with the chocolate... Oh you know me so well...) which I later learned was called a "chocolate cigar"! Seriously, I thought those were the fake cigars made of chocolate you get from See's Candies; but no. Moving on... The chocolate was delicious and very good quality, the dough was perfectly flaky and complimented the chocolate kingly. As I was paying, Miss Sarit asked for some cookies and attempted to pay the lady to which she responded "Are you kidding me? Just take it and enjoy!" or something to that effect. The bakery is large enough, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The fat-boi in me wishes this place was closer; while the diet'er in me wishes it was further. 15 minute drive / 40 minute subway ride will have to do - cool compromise. Vito's is in one of the 'no bullshit' sections of Brooklyn. I can't say I have a lot of experience in or around Sheepshead Bay, but I was recently there running an errand and happened upon this place. I liked it and felt comfortable there immediately. They have cases upon cases with multiple shelves containing all sorts of baked goods, Italian cookies, pastries, breads, rolls, what have you. They also have a deli counter in the back and make some mean looking sandwiches, though I didn't partake. I grabbed some cannoli and a loaf of meat & cheese bread (similar to lard bread from Mazzola's, if you're familiar) and both were pretty great. The best part of my visit was the exchange I witnessed between the proprietor and a neighborhood regular. It went something like this: Proprietor (her): Oh, man. Not you again. I will freakin kill you. Patron (him): Good morning! Why the hell is it so crowded in here? Her: Shut up. I don't wanna hear another word from you. Vito's bakery was a hit or miss for me.Apple strudel was fresh twice but yesterday it was stale. Today I tried their grocery and that was a HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT! I ordered a turkey hero sandwich and was charged $ 8.00 for it.When I came home and opened the package I was SHOCKED how cheaply it was made,it had barely any turkey or cheese or tomatoes! Highly highly recommend. I was out to get lunch for my daughter and I and I was told about vitos so gave it a try. We got two heroes a roast beef and a ham and cheese. On my most recent trip, I also tried the cannoli - which, compared to the cannolis I tried while in Rome, were so-so. My mom and I usually come here for their bagels, rolls, and ham/turkey and occasionally for their cheesecake. The people who work there are usually friendly and nice. Service is rather quick as well. Their cheesecake is rather cheap for a good size and you can ask them to write on the cake too. Last time I came here, my mom and I wanted to buy some cookies, but had trouble deciding. We asked for her suggestion of which cookies are least sweet. She suggested one and gave us a huge cookie to try for free. It was alright but the fact that she let us try (some places don't even allow that if you ask). Ended up buying a different kind of cookie. The meat are usually sliced a bit too thin but besides that, I'll continue coming to this bakery. read more

A friendly, busy and very good Italian bakery located in the middle of the Avenue U Chinatown whose window catches your eye when you walk by! You could say "go figure" but I would venture to guess that this place has been around longer than its neighbors. In additon to pasteries, they have fresh bread and pasta but what I really like it that it reminds you that while the surrounding Chinese bakeries are much cheaper, there is nothing like top quality Italian baked goods! read more

Great place for baked goods. Used to come here as a kid during Halloween for free candy and sometimes buy a quarter pound of sprinkle cookies. We love Vito's. all the pastries are great and the Itilian (tri-color) cookies are the BEST! We love the breads , including the cold cut bread and ther personal pizzas are great too. We always go to Vito's for birthday cupcakes for thie kids school parties and they do the most amazing images on cakes! Vito's has been a great local Italian Bakery for decades, seems like the daughter/niece took over. They use to put bakery items, rolls and pizza in plastic bags, now they just put everything in a paper bag. By the time you get home the paper bag is all greasy. They also raise there prices on cakes during the holidays, be fair to your regulars who come all the time. Bring Josie back in the mornings, she sustained the regulars who been coming there of decades. We use to be a regular customers, but things have changed. read more

For all you bread lovers out there this bakery sells the best Italian hero loaves!!! I love the texture of how it's crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside!!! I always purchase the sesame seeded ones. When my friend & his wife comes to visit us here in Brooklyn from Connecticut I always buy them 3 loaves to bring home. You have to eat this bread the day you purchase it for the full excellence of it. If you keep it overnight you have to seal it very good. The next day you can cut the loaf to fit your toaster and but butter on it. It's delicious with a cup of hot coffee for breakfast. I Recently Moved To The Neighborhood, and I came upon this bakery. Therefore I go in today 04/26/17 at around 3:10 pm ... and these two sales girl were extremely rude. After traveling to the Bronx to pick up a pineapple cake, I decided to ask in my neighborhood if one could be made - and yes one could. That's where the problems began. The order was taken incorrectly. I took the cake anyway. The cake was not that great, and put in a box that was too big so needless to say it was damaged when I got home. So it looks like I will still be going to the Bronx! It wasn't so much the mistake the order taker had made and the box but the indifference of the Baker when I told her the cake was wrong and I was upset and probably wouldn't come back. been goog here for about 8 years the owner and her husband and daughter are sweet, and I love my josephine no matter how she's feeling she's nice to me. some of the young ladies behind the counter are sweet I did encounter 1 nasty rude spanish girl years back ..she is no longer there...so this past Saturday I came after being away awhile. and there was this Asian girl tall she was very talkative to the white male customer since me and him were the Only ones in there at around 3ish. when she finished with him she snarled her face did even say hello or drop dead she put her had on the counter and said what can I get you? I told her pizza etc. she then asked anything else? I saw some donuts 2/$1.00 1 cream was left 2 jelly I said I'll take the 3 she caught attitude and said well OK that's $1.50, Really!!! I can count I would hv taken 4 I was turned off. Vito's makes the best Italian bread I have ever tasted. The almond biscotti are wickedly addictive and I have orders for them from friends living in other boroughs. I have even been told to skip the wine hostess gift and bring biscotti.
