This is a Thai restaurant located in Hell's Kitchen that I think is often frequently ignored although can be a bit pricey. Located in the same neighborhood as Lumlum Thong Lor and others it's a great area to enjoy some Thai food. ViV was quite solid although doesn't have the same level of hype as all the others. We arrived here with a party of four on a Sunday evening, a day crowded in NYC due to the World Cup final. After trying a few places, we are grateful to have stumbled upon here as a restaurant with seating on a busy day. There are quite a few tables in the back. Service was nice and fast and accommodating for our needs. Something I will note is that this place does not have a ton of vegan/vegetarian options beyond the standard Thai dishes with tofu. I ordered the red curry with duck. This took around 15 mins to come out and man was it fantastic. This for sure was one of my favorite meals. The duck was flavorful tasty and well cooked, and as someone who doesn't typically enjoy duck, for that value truly a great meal. It was also quite filling. Met my wife here after work and took advantage of the $10 cocktail happy hour selection. I had a Lychee martini with Red Curry Chicken. Very spicy, nice quality of chicken too. They have a really great happy hour that lasts from 12-7pm with so many flavors for the drinks. I liked my lychee margarita. It wasn't too strong. Viv has been my go to Thai spot in Hell's Kitchen since they opened about 13 years ago. The food was always so great while the service could be hit or miss. The staff was always so chic. The space so hip. I hold this place so close to my heart and change is hard. So imagine my surprise when I went for dinner and asked for the hard copy of the menu (not doing a QR code), and instead of the big gorgeous book of a menu, I was handed a one sheet plastic laminated menu which looked small and as if things had been simplified. I asked - are you under new management or owners? They said no, just revamped the menu. Hmmm?! Gone were my favorite apps - the fried tofu, and signature long thin crispy spring rolls. In its place the new spring rolls are short fat things that look like a crushed eggroll. It was fine. Also got the chicken satay which was very good. As for mains, my favorite dish - the avocado chicken massaman curry served on the bone (as they insisted) was gone. I got my other favorite the drunken noodles with chicken which was great. Now also served with a scrambled egg on top. We also ordered a new dish - the massaman nua, short ribs in the most delicious sauce. When ordering the curry dishes they have gotten rid of most of the options - gone are pork, beef, duck; only chicken, shrimp, tofu remain. The plates they're serving on were different. They use to be unique. Now they're small simple white plates that seem better fit for a diner. The music that was usually pumping, was on low. The dim lighting was turned up, and the place felt bright. The stylish staff, replaced by people in everyday clothes. The whole thing felt a little 'invasion of the body snatchers'. Same space, but it all feels off. I must give them credit the food was good. Prices seem a little higher now. hecked out this Thai spot in Hell's Kitchen with a friend after seeing it had over 4,500 reviews--figured we had to see what the hype was about! We started with the vegetable dumplings, which were surprisingly unique compared to the usual--definitely a standout. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao (8/10), which I don't usually go for (I tend to stick with Pad Thai or drunken noodles), but I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. This place is always a wonderful experience. The food menu is large and I have yet to try anything I didn't like. One of my favorite dishes are their curries. There massaman nua with sticky rice is chefs kiss. It's beef short ribs, pink potatoes, onions, carrots, peanuts, massaman curry. The short ribs is tender and melts in your mouth. The service here is always amazing. The staff are quick and attentive and super helpful if you like asking for recommendations. The space can seat a lot. Another 10/10 experience with Viv! I used to come here a LOT a few years and finally made my way back. I know folks say absence makes the heart grow stronger but wowwww was that the case here. Every piece of our meal was incredible but the major highlights for me were the appetizers. We ordered the Kra-pow puffs and the fried tofu and they were both so so good. The texture of the fried tofu just melted in your mouth and the sauce that came with the kra-pow puff really danced along your palette. Service-wise I had no complaints! The person taking our order seemed to be a new hire and they did an excellent job attending to us all night. I am someone who likes to ask the wait staff's opinions on menu items and they also did a great job of sharing some helpful insight. The decor is absolutely stunning, especially the lit dragon that spans across the restaurant--it's a real showstopper. Once seated, our server was attentive and helpful right from the start. We called to place a reservation since their website didn't show availability and they were very accommodating, that vibe and attentiveness from the employees translated to our dinner too! ViV's dishes have well-developed flavors, and it's worth a detour to try their protein-forward dishes rather than your Thai regulars. First, the ambiance is colorful and fun, especially in this small-ish space. Dishes tried: The lemongrass pork chop was moist and flavorful, with a subtle grill flavor. It rested on top of sweet and tangy sauced vegetables. The tamarind duck had an excellent, rich flavor coupled with a well-cooked and crispy exterior. This consisted of two ample pieces of duck on the bone that were a delight to eat. The proteins rested on a bed of mixed vegetables that I was initially unimpressed by, but I kept returning to their perfect texture and sweet and tangy sauce to finish them all off. The decor of the restaurant is dim with disco lights shining, and flowers, shiny objects and dragon props hanging from the ceiling. The music was pretty loud but entertaining, it felt alive. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and the Thai iced tea. It came out really quick, within 10 minutes and at first my food looked very simple and I didn't know what to expect but the flavors were all there. The grilled chicken and to were warm on a bed of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers on the side and sprinkle of red onions and carrots. The had some crispy noodles to garnish with a Thai peanut tasting sauce. I mixed it all together and each bite was a little full of burst. It was simple but delicious at the same time. Amazing service. Love the food - chicken satay, spring rolls, pad Thai, pad see ew were all delicious! Spring rolls and Pad thai were especially good! Haven't tried the salads, fried rice and curry yet but can't wait to be back. Their interior is tastefully decorated and the service is always warm and friendly.
