Vol. 39 has been on my list for a while, and my husband and I made reservations to go for a post V-day dinner drink, however, I was really sick and it got pushed back three weeks. We went to dinner, then stopped by for a drink. We did not make a reservation this time, having had to cancel twice because I was sick. The tables were reserved, so we sat at the bar, and let me tell you how absolutely wonderful that was!! To start, we got an Old Fashioned and a Black Manhattan, which were really good. I noticed they carry Louis XIII, but for $400. Most places I have seen carry it, the price is for 1/2 oz., so I asked the bartender, Jordan, who said it was for 2 oz. Yes. Expensive, but, in comparison, oddly reasonable. This got us talking, and Jordan, shared some fantastic information and guidance about cognac, and gave us a list of really great cognacs that are well made, artisanal, but that don't come with the same cost as Louis XIII. This brings me to my last point, I got a second drink, and, Jordan, recommended a cognac drink, which I loved. Long story short. Go to there, and sit at the bar. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and the ambiance is really beautiful and welcoming. We will be back! Thank you. Great local, yet, downtown area for non-locals. read more

It was literally just two corners around from our hotel. We stayed at the W, City Center. We just wanted to find a nice kick back place to enjoy a quick drink this Friday evening. It's located on the second floor of this building, not sure which but a sign said "The Grey". We were seated immediately. It wasn't busy at all but nice lite chatter amongst the other guests. I love the ambiance. The warm amber and orange glow of the bar reflecting the various bottles of liquer on glass shelves. Leather tufted couches, plaid chairs, with stacks and shelves of encyclopedias; sorta masculine but refined. I like it a lot. I ordered an amaretto sour with egg white and my boyfriend a nitro stout. We loved our drinks. I loved that my drink had glitter in the froth. Who does that?! It was amazing. I'd definitely make this a regular place to visit if I lived. Definitely underrated. read more

It's hard to food a nice cocktail bar in the loop I feel like. Most of the places are sports bars that get loud during Happy Hour because everyone is trying to find a place to drink to unwind after work. Well Vol. 39 is my go to spot for a nice cocktail, until this place becomes super trendy and it will be impossible to get a seat. I love Old Fashion's and this place does it well. The ambiance is great. The drinks are well made because. Strong, stiff, goes down like water. That's when you know you have a good cocktail. OH, and the one ice cube in your whiskey drink? YES PLEASE. If you use a bunch of ice cubes, the likelihood of it being a really good cocktail does not look good. Anyways really enjoy Vol. 39. Again, great atmosphere even better cocktails. The only reason why this place is not getting 5 stars from me is that the cocktails are pretty pricey. If you're willing to shell out around $15-20 for a cocktail, it's a great spot but just want to warn you all that it can be pricey. Have an old fashion for me here! read more

A friend and I stopped in for a cocktail to catch up while he was in town. This place was the perfect spot to do just that. We're both whiskey guys so naturally we doubled-down on the Old Fashions. They make a really good cocktail here but the pageantry is what steals the show. There is just something about being above street level and looking out on LaSalle Street while you sip a cocktail surrounding by shelves and shelves of books. We absolutely loved it. It was classy, a bit swanky, but low-key and super chill. Vol. 39 is a wonderful place to wind down after a day in the rat race. Oh, and both the greeter and our waiter were accommodating and friendly. This spot has been added to my list of after-work happy hour options and I cannot wait to come back again. read more

A bit pricey, but a really well thought out cocktail menu, and a lovely uncrowded atmosphere in the heart of the financial district, even at 6pm on a Friday night. We tried a few of the cocktails and every one was well balanced and beautifully presented. I ordered the chanterelle cocktail, which came with thyme crepes and as it would take a bit of time to assemble, I was offered a chilled glass of cava while I waited. The chartreuse caviar in my friend's drink was really fun and matched the flavor profile nicely. The blueberry tea cocktail was full bodied thanks to the egg white, yet still light, and though it didn't need the glitter, that's a trend that few can avoid these days. We were staying at the Kimpton and dashed in after a long day of site seeing and watching college hockey. We were a little grubby and a lot wind blown. The staff still treated us like royalty! Everyone was warm and welcoming. They also took time to speak with us about where we are from and what we were doing in town. Very personable. The next night night same thing....under dressed and windblown, but, still so welcoming. Bobby even remembered us from the night before and what we had been drinking. Bobby and Dan waited on us this night and both were charming! The decor is classic with a rich history. More upscale, but, comfortable. The drinks are also classic and very well made. Stopped in to this little lounge last night after dining at a restaurant close by. I was initially a bit skeptical because it was very quiet and not many people were there, but this place proved itself with great quality drinks, phenomenal service, and a pleasant ambiance! Stopped by on a Tuesday night. Felt kind of low key which was nice. A great place to have an excellent drink and chat with the appropriate company. It's not a party place. This is probably my favorite place to get drinks and relax. This place is perfect for lounging and having great conversations late into the night! I go pretty often after work or after leaving a bar/dinner and want to continue the night. Their drink menu is great. They also have warm cocktails which are perfect during the Chicago winters! They also have a great selection of old fashions that you must try! I never realized there were so many different versions of the old fashion but they have mastered most of them. I think it just depends on your preference. One night I went after dinner w my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday and they brought out macaroons and a bday dessert w a candle. Have you ever had a $15 cocktail that was worth every penny? One you never wanted to finish so you'd always have more? You will here! Had a few cocktails here, but the stand out was the Gibson. So delicious, it was like a liquid pickle. The cocktail onion was perfectly marinated, juicy and delicious. So good. I also had some rum drink or other that was fantastic. All their cocktails are carefully and precisely made, these bartenders are TRUE mixologists. Especially Meredith, who is smart and cute to boot! Exceptional service! Started out with a hiccup - there was a 30 minute wait for two but we were offered the communal table. The communal table was awful - placed right near the entrance/exit - no view, obv not the experience that I'd hoped for. But still - we sat down and ordered two drinks. An older trio (arrived right after us) sat at the communal table for awhile but they were moved to a better spot...interesting. Two more girls arrived and they were ushered directly to window seats - we felt slighted. I made eye contact with the Host to let him know that I was unhappy with what had happened. He caught on and all of a sudden a "table just opened up". We were quickly moved to the best seats in the house. The Host made up for it - I didn't get his name (male/glasses) - but he personally apologized and checked in throughout the evening. Ambience is key -- especially while sipping a $30 cocktail... This is a really unique out-of-the-way bar on the second floor of a hotel that I walked by numerous times before realizing it was there. I hate to admit that a decent drink doesn't do it for me anyMORE but nowadays it takes either a phenomenons cocktail or some type of theatrics. It's not to say that the drinks here were bad but there's better options out there. The dessert tray was physically appealing however the final product tasted like something that had been sitting out all day. They just simply weren't very fresh nor delicious for the matter. One cocktail, the SCOTH OLD FASHIONED, was pretty good however you can make this at home with half of the ingredients & at a fraction of the cost. I also ordered a PERSCRIPTION Sazerac & it was bitter to say the least. The "Sunglasses & Advil" has a citrus aspect that I didn't enjoy & lastly we ordered a regular "Manhattan" which was also just "o.k". It seemed like a tourist trap or that patrons from a nearby hotel were the bulk of the crowd. I may or may not return to try the dessert wines or the aperitifs/digestifs. read more

DAMN GINA! A cocktail lounge after my own heart! Sleek, dark, lush. I absolutely LOVE the decor. The leather chairs were so buttery amazing. I wanted to pet them forever. It's a small space and no reservo They have two pages of old fashioneds! Of course, I had to get the vintage. Wow, I never thought I'd say spending $35 on a cocktail was worth it...but it was. It might've been the best old fashioned I've ever had. The service was great in the beginning and kind of tapered off during our stay but they were jammed. Yes, it's overpriced...hello! Me and some friends were recently in a meeting in the Loop and was thinking whats a new, cool place we can get a drink or 3 @? One friend pulled up her phone and said there is a new bar @ the Kimpton Gray Hotel and I was like lets roll! My group of 8 walked in and of course it was my kinda joint...dim lights, very intimate, nice view of the street and a library like look to it...seriously there were books on high shelves. The menu is like a little booklet that had different chapters which is cool and of course it was filled with some pretty nice cocktails. They had a bunch of different old fashioned and I decided to go with the Calvados Old Fashioned which included Busnel fine, bittercube cherry bark vanilla bitters, cardamom and of course the orange peel. Very nice and by night's end I had 2 of them and later a Negroni which was pretty decent. Shout out to our server Sarah that made sure we were taken care of! A vendor took me out for drinks here and it was a fun experience. The bar is well decorated and has comfortable seating. There are law books on shelves, which is a look that works here, but maybe avoid looking at them if you are a little OCD: many of the books are out of order. The service is flawless. The server spent a lot of time talking to us and sold is on negronis with bourbon (apparently it was negroni week). The drinks that the bar tender made were excellent. She then brought us a free standard negroni (with gin) so we could compare. My apologies for failing to take photos of the drinks. Mostly I drank beer. The selection was good - not too much IPA. I can't comment on price because the vendor did not let me pay, but I plan to be back and test this bar further. read more

If I had one word to describe Vol. 39, it would simply just be Sexy. Located on the lobby level of the Kimpton Gray Hotel, Its a hotel lounge with a twist. Upon entering, you walk into a floor to ceiling windows, candle filled lounge. The first time I visited was for cocktails Christmas Eve . There was an amazing two band jazz ensemble singing an array of R&B classics. It was damn near perfect as we watched it snow. The cocktail list is super extensive. We were told by the Hotel Staff to mention the word "Sweater Weather" for their specialty drink for the Holiday. Our experience was so amazing we returned last night for more cocktails. I really enjoyed their spin on a boozy Hot Chocolate. I believe the drink is called the Banglore... It was amazing! If u wanna impress the hell out of someone I highly recommend you take them to Vol.39, it would truly be an unforgettable evening. read more

So cool. It's on the 2nd floor, so don't try looking for it street level. You can see it from the street though. It feels like an old speakeasy or something. It's definitely an old building and old decor inside, but is really cool. Very high ceilings, and the inside walls look like the library of a law office. Floor to ceiling law books. Definitely a cool and easy place to kick back and have some drinks. I recommend ordering your drinks from their menu. We ordered a few drinks that were not on the menu, and they weren't really made right.....but the drinks on the menu were all pretty good. I definitely want to go back and have a good time. read more
