Went to Volare and my GF and I were seated quickly in a booth. Some empty tables, but there were people there. Bread came and we ordered our drinks. We ordered a garden salad with ranch, some cheese sticks and a pizza. Unfortunately the salad came and I had to get up to ask for some ranch. Then the pizza came, but no cheese sticks. My water was never refilled and I was never asked if I wanted another coke. We canceled the cheese sticks and were disappointed. The waiter then ignored us as I had to get up to ask for some more bread. The waiter apologized, but come on guy, you have ONE job. It pains me to say the people sitting next to us were waited on hand and foot. I guess it's because we were the only Hispanics in the house. I still tipped 20% because that's how I roll. When I had my internship at Trinity, I drove by Volare at minimum twice a week and always said I'd stop by, but the timing never worked out. Finally it did and it was a culinary adventure for sure! After my friend and I had a long morning of moving things, we were ready for a nice lunch. We had both been talking about how we wanted to try Volare, and as we drove past, it was kismet and we whipped into the parking lot. (It is a tight parking lot so keep that in mind if you're in a larger vehicle). Unfortunately due to the uptick in COVID cases, we weren't able to dine in, but carrying out did not dampen our experience at all. While we waited, we sat on a large, comfy couch and chatted and enjoyed the warm atmosphere. Built in the old Olmos pharmacy, the interior is very warm and quirky. It looked clean and although proper safety precautions were taken, we chose to be extra cautious and carry out. Additionally, we were a little unsure if we were to sit ourselves or wait for a staff member. As for the food, the short drive home did not hinder the quality of the food at all. The pizza was packed with toppings but the crust remained crisp and not soggy. The Italian sausage gave a normally crowded pizza profile a lift in flavor. I did get a to-go beverage which was flat, but that's a minor issue, and I was so thirsty I didn't care. Can't wait to be able to dine in again. This review is for a lunchtime visit we had 02/25/2023. Food was good (for the most part--see below). Service service was good too. We ordered gelato for my 9-months pregnant wife and my 5 year old son. My wife took a scoop of gelato and crunched down on something she though for a split second was ice and it turned out to be a quarter inch piece of glass that looked like it broke off the rimofa drinking glass or a gelato cup. While the waitress obviously did not charge us for the gelato (we notified her and sent both back immediately anyway) I think what really bugs me is that when we left, there sat the vanilla gelato tub in the display case like nothing happened. I'm not sure what the duty is to a guest in this situation, luckily my pregnant wife didn't break a tooth or godforbid swallow it, but come on. I believe they may have a problem with the way they store their glasses or someone broke a glass over the display case and just didn't care enough to start over on the food underneath. Regardless. What can I say about Volare, we have to eat here at least twice a month. It is incredible, salads and apps delicious. Fresh baked bread, enough said on that. Their cauliflower pizza, especially Quattro formagio, is incredible, calzone is amazing, pizza is delicious, and their pasta is ok, don't really eat it, but I'm sure it's good. Our usual Italian place was closed, we came across Volare and decided to give it a try. Overall the food was amazing, but also not worth the almost hour wait to get it. Katherine our server was great and very attentive! The music and atmosphere was a vibe and very much enjoyed it, it's what got us through the wait for our food. What a treat this place is! Living on the east coast, I've had some delicious pies, but theirs are super yummy. The crust is crisp, but gives enough to fold. The sauce is divine...robust tomatoes and a hint of garlic and the cheese is stringy and tasty. All around a great experience. We ordered curbside and it was ready to go in 20 minutes. Family-friendly, fresh, simple Italian-American food in a no-frills, Americana setting. We've been to Olmos Pharmacy in many incarnations, and wanted to experience it as a pizza place. The building still has plenty of neon and art deco styling. The interior has a fresh coat of paint and is packed with tables and booths. The sode fountain/bar is still there, and you can peek into the kitchen, like you could when it served diner food. The crowd skewed older, with some college students, too. The menu is broad and had something for everyone in our family. The pizza and cheese bread have a delicious crust, just the right balance of crispy and doughy. The restaurant seems to do a good business in carry-out pizzas. The pasta dishes are comfort food with mild flavors. The calamari appetizer stood out for having tender seafood and crispy breading. The Greek salad had fresh greens and a nice balance of olives, feta cheese, and chopped onion; the dressing seemed prefab. We settled on Volare for dinner after finding out that our regular pizza joint was closed on a Sunday. Luckily, Volare is close by and they gave us a 25 min wait to pick up our order, so it was still convenient and time efficient. Their pizza of the month right now is called The Antonio's Pizza - it has meatballs, ricotta, and cherry tomatoes on it. We got a large of that with a side of mozzarella sticks. As for the pizza, they go light on the tomato sauce (my preference). Each slide could have used a little more ricotta - we happened to have some in the fridge so we added it! We also added sriracha as we always do. The flavor of the meatballs was good. The crust is okay - not as crunchy and buttery as my favorite place does it. The mozzarella sticks were a bit gummy, not as crispy as I'd like. My fiancé asked me to go easy as he loves Volare, so I'm landing on a rating of 4 out of 5 stars for a solid pizza night experience. read more

We decided to go to lunch here for my daughter's birthday celebration. We arrived just as they opened. I was intrigued by their move to what used to be the old Olmos Pharmacy on Hildebrand! We owned a business on Hildebrand for many years so we were privy to the original Blanco Cafe on Blanco and Chris Madrid's before it was super chic and the many great milk shakes at the Olmos Pharmacy. But I digress! The food was good! Ordered a Caesar salad to share and a personal pizza. We had an order of chicken parm and an order of chicken piccata also! We enjoyed all the dishes. I had two problems with our visit! It seemed the pasta was parboiled which is common in Italian restaurants but they weren't busy at all. Secondly, a 3 oz glass of wine seems a bit much at $10. Bharmacy Pizza! This place is a recent makeover of the old Olmos Pharmacy located at the corner of McCullough and Hildebrand in Olmos Park. The pizza here comes in 3 sizes- I split a medium Don Corleone Pizza - spicy sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms. The pizza crust was thin and I had a hard time picking it up to eat it, necessitating a fork and knife. They had pepper flakes in a shaker at the table, along with an oregano blend, and a Parmesan cheese shaker to use at your own discretion. The staff was friendly and kept our drinks full and made sure everything was working out according to plan! The prices were fair considering the size of the pizza and how pleasant it was inside the restaurant. I wish they'd have kept the old photos of the building and immediate surrounding neighborhood that they used to have up in here. They serve up gelato now, the building used to be famous for its milkshakes and malts. I don't think they're doing that anymore. This old, art deco-esque building has been changed up to show pictures of Italy instead of the old pictures of Olmos Park like they used to have. Volare is Latin for "to want." read more

I highly recommend the chicken piccata. The to-go visits have both been for pizza. Each time the order was ready at the time provided over the phone. The order was accurate and the food great. First our waitress Catherine was very pleasant and attentive and very well spoken and wasn't afraid to engage in a conversation. She was knowledgeable on the food and helpful. Now for the food we started with the calamari which I thought was very good and cooked correctly as calamari is easy to overcook and become very chewy. Next we ordered a Margherita pizza. Now for my taste it was a little heavy for a Margherita pizza. I prefer mine with a lot less cheese and more of the marinara sauce. It also had a drizzle of olive oil which I did enjoy. I think if I order the pizza here again I'll just request less cheese. Finally we ordered the eggplant parmesan as a main dish which I did love and will definitely order again. I'll start with the good. The ambiance is nice, low lighting, nicely decorated, comfortable bench seats. Very nice hostess and server. The food was tasty. I had the Rigatoni with vodka sauce and sausage. It came with a cup of soup, which was Italian Wedding soup. The soup broth was nice and hot, not overly seasoned. The bread was soft. Now, the not so good. That soup had hardly any ingredients. There was broth, two tiny meatballs, a few chopped leaves of something green, which could've been kale or endive , but I couldn't really tell and they didn't really taste of anything. And a few spoonfulls of orzo. That's it. Barely enough to call it Italian Wedding Soup. If you are on your lunch hour, don't bother - the wait for the food was 45 minutes, so my coworker and I had to get it to go. Overall, since the food was good, I would go back when I have time for a long lunch or maybe dinner. My kids claim this is the BEST cheese pizza in town, but let's not kid ourselves, we willingly oblige to take them to Volare anytime they ask bc they have free table wine and some amazing and complex "adult" dishes. Love the antipasto salad with all the delicious fresh meats and cheeses. The gluten free pasta they substitute in for us GF guests is actually GREAT, which was a pleasant surprise. My personal favorite is the seafood medley with a tomato & wine based sauce. I can't remember the name, but if it's seafood you're after, all their dishes are great. This place is always good and fresh! We went around 1pm Wednesday and it wasnt v crowded and we were able to get the big booth. Idk what kind of Parmesan cheese they use but it was really good. The olive oil could have been better IMO left a biting aftertaste. We went with the fresh inspiration pizza bc I was mostly in the mood for tomato and the added veggies were a nice touch. I also added artichoke hearts and anchovy to my side bc I luv it! But the anchovy was placed oddly near the crust and kind of a lot. Good anchovy is a little and it will go a long way. As a resident of the Alta Vista neighborhood I've been telling myself to give the new pizza place in the neighborhood a try every time i drive by on my way home from work. This past weekend I finally listened to one of my reminders when I swung by with a friend for a low-key dinner. The interior still retains a lot of the charm of the former Olmos Pharmacy that occupied the space prior to Volare but some noticable changes have happend-such as the addition of a gelato case at the end of the soda fountain counter. We came in a little after 8 and honestly I was a little surprised by how show it was-considering it was a Saturday night. There were only two other tables full when we arrived and no other customers came in after us. It was very quiet inside, no music playing or general background noise from other diners, to mask the silence inside the restaurant so i felt like I had to be quiet and not talk to loudly while I was there. When you enter they have a "seat yourself" sign so we chose a booth. It took 5 minutes plus for a waitress to come over and give us menus (surprising since it wasn't busy) but it became a trend of the evening. We kept it simple and ordered the cheese sticks and a medium meat lovers pizza. Both items came out pretty quickly. The cheese sticks were a bit bland and the marinara sauce used to dip them in wasn't much better. I never thought it was possible to have bland marinara sauce but it happened. We didn't finish the cheese-sticks something that is unusual for someone who loves cheese as much as us. The pizza arrived shortly after and for the size was a good price. It was a good pizza but nothing that made me go "wow." The dough was much thicker and breadier than I like and again the sauce just was too mild in taste for me. After delivering the food items our waitress could be found few and far between. Often we ran out of water and at one point my friend had to wave her down from across the restaurant to get a refill. Overall, I wasn't blown away by Volare. There are other pizza spots in town that aren't that much farther away with pizzas and service more to my liking. I did take note of their lunch specials (shown on a sign outside the door) which looked really reasonable and a great price so I may be back to give them a try for lunch since I work less than 10 minutes away. For now, however, I'll give a pass on Volare. read more
