They just opened a week ago. They moved into the space that was Olmos Bharmacy and several other establishments, including a pharmacy. They kept the counter and the sign-clock outside. The color scheme was changed up to include red-neon. Overall I'd say I like the decor more than previous incarnations. My first visit was a total disappointment, but I will try again. Especially since I tried their pasta entrees and not the pizza, yet. I ordered the Mediterranean Salad and Frutti De Mare Pasta. Both were disappointing but the pasta was just bad. I eat my pasta entree first while it's warm and eat my salad after. But for the sake of the order most expect I'll start with the salad. The greens were slightly less than fresh and crisp but not bad. Usual suspects for the ingredients but the tomatoes were cut into large wedges. Very large. I shouldn't need a steak knife to eat this salad. Seemed lazy. The tomatoes should be cubed or other to eat them in a bite with the rest of the salad. The dressing didn't make me think of a Mediterranean Salad like the many I've had before. It should be just olive oil, some form of wine vinaigrette, and herbs. I'm pretty sure if I put it in front of you and asked you to name it you would say it was "Creamy Italian Vinaigrette". Like the kind you get in a 5gal bucket from Costco, Sam's, or Sysco. And they only have one size for $15. So if you want an entree and a salad that isn't a meal.... Too bad. Now from not so good to bad. The Frutti De Mare was wholly disappointing. The most striking thing was the lack of sauce. It just wasn't there. You can see in the pic I included that I even separated the noodles to see into the bottom of the dish and NOTHING. The noodles sort of had a hint of red on them. Ridiculous..... And needed salt. And needed a pinch of crushed red pepper. The TINY shrimp were undercooked. The seafood was overall lacking. And it cost $20!! I can spend $24 at Piatti to get twice the amount of seafood (including sea scallops not in this one) and a wonderfully savory broth that fills my entire dish. Now, they did just open. I will go back for another visit. Especially since I didn't try the pizza. I've known several good pizza shops in the past that had great pizza yet insufferable pasta dishes. read more

Just came from dinner there and overpayed for their "chicken parm" which was basically two small chicken cutlets and a scoop of runny sauce and noodles. The waitress wasn't friendly or welcoming at all. We weren't greeted . She poured water before asking us if we wanted anything else to drink. She offered more bread when I finished eating which was basically a waste. We went around 4:45 5:00, and they weren't busy at all and we did wait a while in a empty restaurant. We ordered the margarita pizza and cheesy bread for take out. I have no clue what was in the dipping sauce for the cheesy bread but it was amazing. At some point, I was dipping my pizza in it too. We're visitors to San Antonio and wanted an authentic pizza. We got what we asked for with Volare. We ordered for pickup a large pizza 18" with toppings of lamb, beef, pineapple, black olives, spinach and corn. The crust was garlic and pesto. Unfortunately, lamb wasn't available and the beef was only on half the pizza but OMG it was superb!! My kids under 3 loved it! The restaurant it's self was beautiful and clam for the evening inside. Definitely not for kids but cute for adults. Very clean and peaceful. The outside looks a bit abandoned at night but don't let that turn you away. We also ordered gelato chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla which were all very good. Raspberry was tart. I just can't stop talking about how delicious and affordable, at least the pizza, our order was. Must eat here if visiting San Antonio! Staff was polite and responsible and always clarified my order. This is not the same Valare pizza that was on Broadway. It can't be. Ever since it opened its location close to Olmos Park, I've been wanting to try it again. Remembering the place on Broadway; I would have great gourmet pizzas with unique toppings and how delicious it was, I've always wanted to give it a try again.. Mistake. I ordered a medium two topping with sausage and mushroom. I understand that the toppings will make their way closer to center upon cooking and when the crust bubbles, but there must have been very little toppings put on this. There was almost an equal amount of space from the edge to where the toppings rolled, then the center. The pizza was flavorless. I thought I had covid there for a second. I walked in to pick it up. No one in the place. Not like the one on Broadway when it was usually busy. Smaller, but busy. Then I wondered, why do they give me a whole serving of spaghetti with a medium pizza? Now I know. Volare is lowest common denominator Americanized Italian food and the Sysco food truck outside shoulda told ya. From the way the phone, door, and other aspects of service are handled it's pretty obvious these aren't trade restaurant people. Viewed from a culinary and service standpoint this is a low skilled staff. Volare does do a few things right, however. The basic, hard-to-screw-up, oven items like pizzas, calzones, and stromboli are perfectly serviceable and keep with the flavor you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Pastas are another topic entirely and should be avoided. There's no talent on saute at this restaurant and the linguine with clams we ordered missed the mark so badly that I'm convinced the kitchen staff doesn't understand the dishes themselves or what they're even supposed to taste like. It was that bad, folks. As overpriced as Volare is (another knock) I wouldn't gamble on pasta at this restaurant unless you order it dine-in and are thus in an easier position to send it back to the kitchen. As a longtime frequent visitor of the location on broadway, that I honestly hope has no connection to this place. I had high expectations. I have to say there are major differences that really let me down and for the price of I could ask for my money back I would. 1) service walked in and was ignored at a table for seven minutes .. and yes I timed it, while three other groups walked in after us and were promptly given arrived menus and drinks. The waiter disgruntled as if we bothered him took our drink order and brought two waters and a Diet Pepsi... we orders two Pepsi's and a water. After five minutes he walked by and tossed a basket of bread on the table. When he took our orders he seemed a bit friendlier probably bc I took out my phone to take a picture of the decor for my post... though he didn't frequent our table much almost all other tables got multiple baskets of break and for reference most other tables were sets of two like my mother and I. We got zero drink refills and the waiter brought the to go containers before we were even done. Mind you no one else in this establishment was treated this way... makes me wonder if I just look like a horrible human being... 2)The food. The bread was nothing to write home about just bread in a basket. Ordered the cheese sticks and a Volare salad. The salad was super fresh and stacked with meats and olive and a very tasty dressing. The mozzarella sticks were piping hot and had great ooze. Both these are a high recommend. What I didn't like along with our waiter ignoring us for he Better part of the evening was the food was not good at all. We had a delicious meal at Volare recently for a going away dinner. For those of you that grew up with Olmos Pharmacy know the building and if like me, truly sad that they closed. Volare did something magnificent, they kept the old signage inside and out front and still have several items, to include the milkshake machines. Visiting my first time was very nostalgic for me. Miserable lunch today. Atmosphere quiet and drab Italian with bright glaring window light. Waiter showing off his loud overdramatic voice. Thirty minutes wait for food in an almost empty restaurant. Bread not baked enough, you know, pinch it and it turns into dough again. Small fast food plastic cup for oil bread dip. Manicotti with not quite baked pasta (not completely thawed?) Thin thin tomato sauce that was anemic at best. Pizza had poor quality too thin pepperoni and the pizza lacked spice of any kind, especially oregano.
