Always on the lookout for the next epic meal from an unassuming place and we found our latest beacon of light. The Lighthouse Seafood is located in the Springwood shopping center which apparently has relocated here now and can be found off Fredericksburg Road. The inside is just big enough to accommodate groups of 4s and was nearly full for a Friday night as people came, ate, left and then replaced by a new bunch soon after. Turnovers are quick as the local guests mean business when it comes to chowing down some seafood. Both wifey and I ordered the fish and shrimp and were impressed. The fried batter was light, had a nice flavor and made me think what the interior of Mexico would produce for its people. I was so excited about The Lighthouse Seafood restaurant moving to a new location. So on the first week of opening, I tried my usual favorite dish. It was as good as I remembered, perfectly fried fish & shrimp, great quality & taste. The fries however, tasted a little off and had an aftertaste. Not sure if it was a bad batch, but I will see how the fries taste on my next visit?! The new location is a little smaller than the previous location, it's a lot brighter which I do like a lot. Menu prices haven't changed much, still excellent quality at a value reasonable prices. Restaurant staff still friendly and courteous, strive for good customer service. My sister raves about the Ceviche here, so I definitely need to try it soon and also explore more of the various selections on the menu. The food is delicious. The reason it is a 4 star is because 1. They want a tip and they don't even serve you, you have to get it yourself at the window, 2. They charge for to go cups. (Who does that?) 3. The staff is always rude. You made a face because I didn't have change for the to go cup and you rolled your eyes. I paid by card and that's all I have. I've never been to the original location and found out it had closed but not for good and just moved a bit further up the street past the HEB. The new restaurant is inside a strip center but there's no sign so I had to call the restaurant to inquire about the exact location and was told by a busy young lady that it's across from an ice cream store. I had to play a little guessing game to find out which business was The Lighthouse and alas I quickly found it. I walked inside and ordered at the counter, fish and shrimp combo with coleslaw and green beans and an apple soda. The people at the counter were busy and weren't friendly nor were they rude like that old lady at Rudy's. It was crowded inside but I was lucky to get a seat. First time here, too my mom who's 84 and wanted to sit before ordering at the counter. We were told by the male manger that she could sit at the table. So he directed her to some dirty chairs off to the side. The interactions with this individual made me believe he was in a foul mood, his tone was not a friendly one. I recommend the hostess at least treats you with a smile, would make more welcoming. The sides, green beans are straight out of can, rice seemed out of a package, coleslaw a bit to sweet for my taste, other than that fish, onion rings, and fries were good. We dined in for dinner here. You order your food 1st and then get a table. I could see where if it was busy that you may not get a table. I got the broiled garlic shrimp with coleslaw and carrot salad. I've never had carrot salad and I was interested in trying it. It was a creamy sweet salad with carrots of course, raisins and a few pineapple chunks. It was tasty. The shrimp was good too. The coleslaw was eh. I prefer a vinegar slaw vs the creamy kind they serve. My husband got the tilapia and shrimp fried. He said his was average. Parking is tight so go early. My fiancee and I were looking for a new seafood place to try and found Lighthouse from a Google search. Since we're new to San Antonio, it was a bit further from the house than we normally go, but we're both glad to have found this spot. They're located just outside downtown in an area that's a bit sketchy. It's a small, nondescript building that has a total dive look and feel on the outside. Parking consists of several spots around the building, although you can also park on the street. There's nothing fancy about The Lighthouse Seafood. Their dining room is small and plain. It's old and worn, but is clean. Most important (to me anyway), their most recent city health inspection permit showed a score of 97 / 100. Their menu is large with a good selection. We had to examine it for a several minutes to take it all in. As for the food, it tasted fresh and was excellent; nothing tasted frozen or canned. Something you don't see much anymore is that their entrees are served on heavy family style porcelain plates. The only thing my fiancee complained about is that you apparently need a door code to use the bathroom. It's a minor inconvenience and most likely due to being located next to downtown. We enjoyed our dinner and would have no problem going back. Nor do I have any hesitation to recommend them. read more

There was a hair on my plate and the cashier immediately stated that it was mine. How? It was coming from inside the plate! She was VERY rude and VERY reluctantly offered to make me a new plate. This is a local spot with basic traditional options. Can't go wrong. I've passed by numerous times and never realized the Fredericksburg Rd side is the rear of restaurant and always appeared empty. Drove around the building and several vehicles were parked in the lot and side street. The restaurant is small and well cleaned. Order food at the counter first, then take a seat due to limited space. Staff kept up with clearing tables and prepped them for the next customers. My group tried the shrimp cocktail, which was tasty, generous portion of avocado slices, but appeared to be made with pre frozen shrimp. No problem. We also tried the fish sandwich and a #1 Daily Special with coleslaw, fries, and hush puppies. My only complaint is that the fried shrimp on my plate was not cleaned all the way and I found poop shoots intact in two. Yuck! I would come back again to try other fish options and sides. read more

Just moved into the area, and I'm stoked to find such a great seafood place so close. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. The vibe made me forget that I was in the city and not down at the coast. My daughter and I shared the 2 fried filets and 8 shrimp. It came with two sides, so we got the carrot salad and French fries, plus it came with a choice of corn bread or hushpuppies. We went with both. Good portions and a good value. The food is excellent there. I was given a small sample of the clam chowder to try, and I was definitely pleasantly surprised by how good it tasted. I'm very conflicted about writing this review. I BELIEVE we should support local small business. That being said, Lighthouse gets 3 stars and I REALLY want to give them more stars but my issues is their service. This is good food at a decent price and it is a small family run business and I ALWAYS want to support local. But in a time when prices are rising and the world is crazy we can at least provide good customer service and I really feel the Lighhouse lacks in this department. Smiles and good attitudes are free and make people want to go back to your establishment. At least it does for me and my family. I'm a fan. After seeing picture after picture on Facebook from old high school classmates I decided to give it shot and take a break from other places. Let me get this out of the way to cut the suspense before giving specifics - is good food and good prices. So I usually head over to golfo de Mexico on Basse of I'm in the mood for seafood because it's not too far, not too expensive, and they are nice people. But in all honesty is but actually that good. Their fish has a decent breading but the fish itself is ... Fishy. I like their shrimp because I love shrimp almost as much as Bubba Gump! I also head over to sea island when I'm wanting a better quality and I'm not buying for the WHOLE family. Big old Latino families get expensive to feed! I bring this up so you'll have a frame of reference for comparison. They are better and comparably priced to Golfo but they are slightly below but much better priced than Sea Island. Now the specifics. There family fish is good, tasty fish closer to the sea island breading on golfo size fillets. It's a generous portion for the price add you get the option of adding 16 shrimp for $10! Yum! They are nowhere near the size of shrimp at Rudy's or Golfo, though, do if you are a real shrimp eater maybe double up. It's good shrimp! I will say their cocktail sauce needs more horseradish and is a little sweet, though that would probably be pretty tasty with more horseradish. Their tartar sauce is close to Luby's tartar sauce, which ain't Rudy's (my favorite tartar sauce) but it's better than some other places. The sides are WAY better than golfo or many other seafood places, and I have to say that it really made it more of a real meal on par with sea island! We had cooked spinach, tender green beans (but not over boiled), sweet cornbread muffins, hush puppies, actually crispy fries, corn on the cob, cole slaw, and carrot salad!!!!!! That was a feast for 6!!! Total price was $10 per person but it was a real meal with tasty sides and quality fried fish and shrimp! Awesome trip that my family will actually harass me into repeating! But I didn't wait for that! Shh. Don't tell the kiddos but I already went back midweek! I tried the blackened fish and shrimp combo. It was prepared under the broiler and honestly needed a little more heat to char the spices a bit (thus blackened, right) but it was still tasty and well cooked. Follow-up trip I got rice and more carrot salad. They use a coarser shred than any other carrot salad I've ever had and it took me a second to get used to it but I really like the extra crunch and the diminished wetness typically present in carrot salads. Great trade-off. Overall really good follow-up lunch that I might have to repeat! Conclusion: I now see why so many photos popped up on Facebook! Lol! Not only will I continue to go there when I'm craving fish by myself but I will likely skip golfo altogether as well from now on. Winner winner fish and shrimp dinner! Next time I'll try the catfish and jumbo shrimp and let y'all know that one! read more

This is a much long overdue review hyping up a neighborhood mom and pop seafood place - Lighthouse Seafood. Pass it on! Note that this is NOT Lighthouse Neighborhood Lounge off of Cincinnati by Woodlawn lake, but this is the restaurant on Freddy (Fredericksburg Rd, right west of I-10, immediately after the Laundry Express/Boost Mobile before Oak Farms Dairy. The bright blue hue of the building can't be missed if you're looking for it, but it's easy to get distracted when in the colorful neighborhoods of the Deco District. So now that's established, on to the reason you're even reading this....what's so darn good about it? PAST VISITS: I went around 2019 and maybe 2020 2-3x. At the time Ii thought it was ok. Really good Mariscos Soup and Clam Clam Chowder stood out in those memories. I felt the breaded fish and shrimp plate was ok. Just not for me, but I could see why people liked it. I also recall having the the broiled Lemon pepper and Blackened catfish (I asked for both seasonings) before and liked that quite a bit, but I always forgot about it. PRESENT DAY AUG 2022: I have been 5 out of the last 7 days. I think it's fair to say I like a lot. (You the Jim Carey Dumb and Dumber voice didn't you? Yeah you did if you didn't, you reread it and then did it just now.) Here is my run down of what we have tried. - Damn superb shrimp gumbo (more brothy and no roux thickener, but flavorful af) Get a bowl and not a cup. - delish fish and shrimp tacos (had broiled shrimp) Corn tortillas are grilled for a nice flavor - flavorful yellow rice as a side (my go to) - perfectly tart and creamy tartar sauce - solid fish sandwich (and I never really like those but I'd def order again) -Cajun fish is good (maybe ask for Blackened seasoning; I spice mine up with cayenne pepper and Crystal hot sauce) - zesty fish is my fave of the fish - excellently seasoned hush puppies Still making my way through the menu. Sides are hit or miss, skip the spinach. Green beans are canned but not horrible. I can accept the sides for the freshness of the signature seafood. Rice is alway . I have no idea what it's seasoned with. Saffron snd butter? But it's something else. Not quite chicken bouillon but something....and the seafood is hella fresh. Shrimp is sweeeet Gulf shrimp. It's so sweet it's almost too sweet for me, but that's how you know it's fresh caught. I would love to see some specials like flounder or soft shelled crab but I have no complaints. They are pretty quick. Call in an order and 10 - 15 it's ready. Tell them TaNae, the black girl who has been coming in a lot sent ya! They do charge 25¢ per to go plate and prices are a bit higher than online. I got 3 plates, 1 bowl soup, 2 cups of soup and it was $45 with tax and to go charges and we had a ton of food. It's a more than solid entry in the SA seafood scene. Consistent in preparation. Fresh seafood that is never fishy! Great prices. Great customer service from Mom&Pop. I hold businesses like these near and dear within my heart. My family owns a small restaurant a few hours away, and I know the amount of effort it takes to have consistent and delish food going out daily. I know how hard it is when you're in pain or tired but there is no one else who can get it all done like you and your prized employees. Constantly trying to maintain fair and low pricing when your supply costs go up. Trying to do right by those you depend upon, so they stay, by helping help your employees out when their costs of living increase, too. Dealing with all of this on top of the increase of out of town lawyers capitalizing on backs of these businesses like we have seen with the mom and pops on the south's side recently. This place is the bomb. Looks like a little shack from the outside and even a little bit on the inside but don't be mistaken this place is spot on delicious. The menu is very extensive they have everything you would ever possibly want from a seafood restaurant and the prices are very good but the food is really the highlight here. I'm so excited to know this place is so close to my house because we all crave fried fish quite frequently. A good test is always the gumbo & this place knocks it out of the park. Even at 2o'clock in the afternoon this place was relatively busy. The staff is very friendly and the place is very clean. The health scores even 100. The tables are clean and not sticky. I called in an order for pickup. I had heard good things of things from friends, and figured with it still be during Lent I would give it a go. So I arrived and the food was already packaged up and ready to go ontime. Off to a good start. The menu online was a bit out of sorts so I wasn't really sure how much my food was going to be but found it to be reasonably priced. When I arrived home (i live with 1.5 miles) I began to unpackage food and make sense of what and whom I ordered for. This had me a little worried because the packaging was not set to wow you with any presentation at all. In fact, it had me a bit afraid and setting myself up for disappointment. The 6 piece fried shrimp looked pretty small and dry, in the container it came with a slice of lemon and tartar sauce, I usually eat mine with cocktail sauce that was not included. The Shrimp Cocktail looked pretty standard for a to go order Nothing appeared impressive or yukky. I became hesitant though when i saw that I ordered the Ceviche Tostadas (2) which i had heard good things about before. In the bag was two tostada shells just plain wrapped and then a small container that had the contents to add on the shell on the side. I was like so I got to do all the work no bueno. So i was ready to eat but wasn't sure what to expect. I will tell you now. I will eat there anytime and they can make me put my own topping on the shell if they can keep making their food so delicious! Everything was made extremely well, especially impressive for to go orders! I mean could the presentation part been a bit more appeasing - yes but the flavors were spot on.. Nothing too fishy or too bland all flowed well together, and upon final review of the ticket and the food received it was perfect! Next time we will try eating indoors. Great job. read more

If the cooks are from sea island you could if never guessed it. Food pretty disgusting wouldn't even rate it. All food was cold, tasteless. And some of it smelled so so fishy. Didn't eat it because of the smell. Like old shrimp. Service maybe a slight 5 Ambiance ok. But don't waste your hard earned money at this place ! Total experience a total let down. read more
