First time here, but hesitated to come to this water park as it's further away and clearly for a younger crowd. Theres a large splash pad that can't hold a candle to the free one in Arlington, a fun shallow water area for little kids (?), like toddlers and lower elementary, and then there's the large pool with the two slides (open and closed). My kids are 8 and 10 so I can tell you that they're already kind of outgrowing this park and we'll probably not be back next year. Overall satisfied the changing room had private showers and lockers (for rent). Was worried there wouldn't be pool chairs but as we came on a federal holiday, this was not a problem for us. Would say peak hours are afternoon (aka after lunch). I was confused because it said no food and they checked our bags coming in, but then we clearly saw people with food in large coolers so why do they get a pass? Hm. Also, good tip is to buy the pool+ mini golf as the price is the same. Lifeguards were nice and all the staff were friendly. Was pleased with how respectful these young teens were. The pool was clean but the restrooms got pretty gross by the end of the day. Not sure if they had a cleaning schedule up for it. Food was pretty good though I passed on the funnel cakes. read more

Lots of kids and families took advantage of a steamy hot day at the water park. There were no chairs to be found as people were in the pool but every one had a towel or pile of clothes on it. The shaded areas were full of empty chairs with towels and I found an edge of a seat in the food area to hide from the sun. Not the park's faults, but they do have some control of cleaning the bathrooms and changing area every once in awhile. The floor was expectedly wet, but also very dirty. I did not notice any security checks for children who freely entered and exited the park. Though there were wrist bands, who was checking to make sure children belonged to the adults who were leaving? This is a great spot for little kids who will be watched by their parents. It was not a place my teenagers felt was for them. read more

So , I can now say I've visited all of the NOVA waterparks, after visiting Volcano Island today. Unfortunately, volcano island is near the bottom if not at the very bottom of the NOVA water parks. Luckily for me, it's also the furthest so I don't plan on wasting the 45 minutes to get here again. The playground feature is in the "kiddie pool". It has a giant dumping bucket, a small slide, and lots of sprays. We were told we couldn't bring our pool toys in *even though it clearly states online sand toys are allowed and that's what we brought*. We played with them, instead, in the splash pad area. This area was sad, thinking about the Great Waves splash pad, the FREE our special harbor splash pad, etc. Not a lot of water, off timing. There is also a large pool with a wading ramp. A slide goes into the pool but my daughter would not try it. There are also a couple big slides for 48 inches plus. I'm happy I can now say I've been to all the NOVA water parks, but this is the one-along with Atlantis (see separate review) -that I won't be keeping on rotation. read more

Good water park. The water was clean and there were options for all ages; including a few kids play areas, a small slide, and big slides for older kids. There were nicely shaded seating areas. The locker room was clean but some of the showers only had cold water. There was also a shortage of hooks for bags and towels near the showers. We didn't get to try the food. My only complaints would be that the park played their music very loudly and it was hard to relax in areas of the park where a speaker was located. The lifeguards did their job well but were not the nicest people, which was disappointing. Overall this is a good park for just a casual, couple hours out of the house. read more

100% awful This water park is such a disappointment. First, they check your bags. Ok, i appreciate the safety aspect, but not allowing outside snacks?! If you can't bring snacks, they should offer equivalent organic healthy options for purchase. How long can a starving child enjoy the pool? Well, not only the snack bar was sold out of all the junk, but they also closed 30 early. My daughter was so excited to try her new floaty, but as soon as we got in the water, the life guards started whistling at us as if we were criminals. My daughter refused to go back in the water and we went home after about 30 minutes. Everything is dirty, restroom floors are full of water, wet toilet paper everywhere. The chairs are old, mismatched and moldy. And it's super noisy with all the music blasting. The kid slides are cracked - I was surprised our swimsuits didn't get ripped. There are teenagers in the little kids are which makes it very unsafe for little kids to play. Why isn't anyone policing them?! Of cause it's easier to leash out on a small child with a floaty than deal with oversized teens. If you train your staff on the rules, you should also teach them social skills. Or white your damn rules in big red letters on a board so that we know what they are (for others, because we are not coming back) read more

It's no Water Country USA but it's a great family diversion, especially for those little ones with all that pent up energy. There's a large main pool with sections for little and big people (max 5 feet deep); open and closed water slides; a slip-and-slide sprinkler area; a shallow pool; and - the star of the park - a giant dumping bucket that tips over and pours gallons of water on everyone beneath it. Fun times. On a hot Memorial Day weekend, the park (which isn't very large) wasn't too crowded and the pools were clean. The only downside is the selection of food options at the cafe: individual boxed pizzas, pre-made fries, burgers, hot dogs, funnel cake. It's all the junky food you'd expect at a water park, yes, but for something healthier and cleaner, it's best to bring a snack or eat at one of the picnic tables outside the park (at least they make it easy for you). That said, the fries aren't half bad. All in all, a really nice place for a family outing in the summer. Enjoy! read more

We babysat our nephew last weekend and thought this would be a perfect place to take him being it was so hot out! The park has a good intentions but unfortunately I had a few concerns. The food was terrible and the young man in the cashier position was either very new or didn't care to listen to what we wanted to order. Also, there was a whole section of the park that wasn't working. August and the whole park isn't functioning? There was plenty of kids and adults! The women's bathroom was destroyed. Overall the park could be updated! Has great potential. On a positive note my nephew had fun in the kiddo pool and my fiancé was loving the big water bucket!! read more

This place is great for kids. My 5-year-old loves the smaller water park pool area and will play there for hours. The larger pool is nice too though it's all very chlorinated, probably because of the high volume of kids. He also comes home with very red eyes There are slides in the larger pool for kids over 4' tall and there are plenty of lifeguards on duty. Some areas in need of improvement: the cafe could have a better selection of food with some healthy options. We usually just pack our own. And the bathrooms are not very clean. They should also have more shaded areas around the pool. Currently they only have one large umbrella near the small pool and it fills up very fast. Overall it's a nice place to spend a few hours. read more

Be prepared to protect your little ones! There's no age limit on the area with smaller slides for little kids, so middle schoolers are pushing the preschoolers aside in the line for the slide and climbing onto the pipes! It's a shame because this is a beautiful water park with ample space for all ages. The little kids' area had a fence around it and they could easily post a sign with an age limit and/or maximum height for the kids (that would not apply to adults supervising them) but as things are, I don't consider this water park a safe environment for my family. read more

Ruined by VERY loud music Visited this place with my daughter a week ago. It looked nice enough. The changing areas were a bit cramped but clean and the pool area looked nice. Why one star, then? The music. Surrounding the entire park is a fence and hanging from the fence are speakers every 100 feet or so blasting music at levels equivalent to a nightclub. To speak you need to yell. One can only hear the music. Nothing else. You cannot even hear the kids running about, laughing and screaming. If you like to choose what is blasting in your ears, avoid this place. As my daughter, me and 30% of population are sensitive to this sort of crap, they are effectively eliminating these people from their customer base. I certainly will not want to come back. Also, if someone is in trouble and needs a life guard it is certainly not going to be from yelling that assistance is provided. Admittedly, there were several lifeguards and they looked capable, if challenged by the blaring music. read more

I admit I haven't been here in YEARS... like since before it was called Volcano Island. Compared to other pools/mini-water parks, here's the scoop: Pros: Big actual POOL where you can swim and splash and tread water... 4 and 5 feet even in some places. We flipped, and did handstands and acted like kids. Two of the three of us are kids. It was afternoon, during the week, and late in the season... but there wasn't much crowd. It was busy with no challenge finding space to sit, splash and play. They have "medium" size slides for "medium" sized kids. With an 8 yr old who is a little intimidated by the big slides, these were just perfect. They have great kiddie play areas with the duming buckets and squirty things. There is a refreshment stand although I didn't check it out. I like that they played music, and I could even hear it. I like that they didn't get ticked at some kids who were playing with water guns, and they were respectful enough not to hit innocent bystanders. Cons: No lazy river. No wave pool. No big slides (kind of big, but not "really" big... in other words, like OK for a grown up, perfect for tweens. Overall: I would not consider it a "water park" but it's cooler than the pools from when I was a kid, without giving up the things that were cool about pools when I was a kid. read more

Lots of fun for the little ones...great spray grounds! We just recently discovered Volcano Island although we've lived in the area for years. It is hidden away and seems to be kind of an undiscovered gem. Even on Labor Day weekend, it wasn't overwhelmingly crowded. We arrived at opening time (11 a.m. - a little surprised it doesn't open earlier) and there was a fair wait to get in. This is because they only had one person checking everyone in for both the water park and the mini-golf. If you wait about 30 minutes after opening time, you'll probably get in right away. You know how everyone waits at the gate on a nice day to get the good seats as soon they open? Well, it kind of backfired since we ended up standing in line for the first 15-20 minutes. We did manage to snag a few seats under one of their huge umbrellas for the shade factor, and off we went. The place isn't that big, but the prices are a lot cheaper than most other water parks. $8 for adults, $6.75 for kids and seniors, under 2 is free. There is a very large regular swimming pool, a section with two big slides (one open, one enclosed), a medium slide for older kids, and a small slide for young ones. There are two spray grounds -- one is zero depth which is nice for toddlers and babies. Except watch out! Sprays do pop up out of nowhere and might startle some of the real young ones. Several small buckets dump water regularly, and there is another small slide for the toddler crew. The other spray ground has a great big bucket that should dump water every 15-20 minutes. I saw it in operation last time I was here and it does give a drenching! On Labor Day weekend, however, the bucket wasn't dumping out and just kept appearing like it was ready to go. Several folks were standing around in wait for the big drench, but it never happened. I don't know if it was broken or was just stuck that day or what. Aside from this big bucket of water, there are lots of climbing areas and several more slides with plenty of sprays and fountains all around. This pool is about 2 ft in depth. All the facilities were clean and the pools were very well maintained. There's a snack bar on the premises that sells hot dogs, pizza, etc. for pretty reasonable prices. They take VISA so you don't necessarily have to bring cash. There are showers and lockers, too. The water park is part of the Northern Virginia Regional Park system, so they also sell "bounce" passes to all of their parks/water parks. It's also part of the larger Algonkian Park, which is right on the Potomac River. There are picnic areas, trails, and camping/cabins available. It's a beautiful park in general. We will definitely be back next summer for the water park, and in the meantime, we plan to check out the trails and picnic grounds on the Potomac in the fall. read more

Although the lifeguards are all very attentive, my family will not return. 1. Used bandages all over the pool deck 2. Bratty kids who always cut in line on the slides 3. Dozens of camp buses with what felt like thousands of camp kids (isn't that a fire code violation?!) 4. A dark, nasty shower area with moldy shower curtains and super-low-pressure shower heads 5. A shower drain that did anything but. Stood in about 3" of dirty water the entire time. Thank goodness I purchased our passes through Living Social and only had to pay $4 each. read more

Went to this water park on a Holliday yes, but got the absolute worst service ever at a family run water park! In line for over 3 hours and then got told by a "manager " that they were closing early and were not letting anyone else in. However people were able to sneak in cause the staff wasn't paying attention to what was going on! I know it's a holiday and all but they needed more staff to run this place and staff older than 18 with some experience to be able to handle what's going on!! I will never come back to this water park again!! I have some extremely upset children that can't go to the water park! read more

Okay place, you don't even have to wear a swim suite to swim in the pool. Lots of people wearing their street cloths. Family and I had a nice picnic under the trees around lots of trash. Pricing in the food place was okay... Staff nice and lifeguards are on point. We have been going a few times a summer for the past five or six years. The pool is great for toddlers, preschoolers, and school aged children who are just learning how to swim. Today's experience was spoiled by the amount of food trash (bottles, chip bags, even chewed gum) on the pool deck. They really need to have and enforce stricter rules about food on the pool deck, make more trash cans available, or do something so that place doesn't look like a big trash bin. I have lived in this area for almost 15 years and today I finally came to Volcano Island. (Thanks to a Groupon) I can say that I haven't missed out on much. I gave 1 star for the nice cool water that was refreshing on a hot day and another star for safety. The place is dirty, the chairs are old and the staff lacks any personality whatsoever. I just spent over $8 on a chicken sandwich and fries. First of all I must say that I stood in line waiting for my food for almost 20 minutes. Then I received the absolute WORST food. The fries were so over cooked that they were hard and hollow inside and the sandwich was one small 1/16 inch thick chicken breast all dried up, so much so that it was difficult to cut through. When I opened it and saw nothing but a dry piece of chicken I went back and asked for the lettuce and tomato like the picture shows. The kid who acted as if I was bothering him says "it comes on the side, would you like it?" Duh!?! Needless to say it didn't make a difference and this meal was awful and barely edible. DO NOT EAT HERE! Make sure to feed your kids prior to coming or as soon as you leave. Since I had a Groupon I would say that I got my money's worth but had I paid full price I would have been very upset that I didn't choose a better place. Probably won't come back. read more

Place is a lot of fun. Relatively small, but nice facility that is reasonably priced to get into. The lines for the big slides move pretty quickly. The food at the cafe is not worth it, so I wished I'd packed my own lunch. My two 7 year olds and 9 year old had a blast on a hot day. 3 hours and counting. Good park for the kids but the lack of shade makes it tough to stay for a long time. People piling up underneath the handful of umbrellas they have is frustrating. Would consider staying longer maybe hanging out for a meal but, not without a place to cool down and not sitting on top of 10 other families. read more
