Volcano is by far my favorite Asian cuisine restaurant in the area!!! My husband and I often meet up here for weekday lunches, date nights, even take our toddler with us sometimes. We waited over 30 minutes to get our food and when it came it was luke warm at best. The waiter apologized and blamed it on the "new guy". This was the worst meal we've had in a very long time. I strongly recommend you try another Asia establishment for a decent meal, not this place. read more

Food is really good. I've been 3 times and have liked everything. The only couple draw backs are, they don't have a full bar, beer & wine only. They don't let you order lunch portions on weekends. Let me start off by saying...we arrived at 8 pm. There was a large crowd sitting to the side of us, possibly a company holiday party? I had been waiting to go to Volcano's for about two months and finally found someone to go with me, the service was just ok, had to ask for a dish to mix the sauces in, a fork and hail the waitress for refills. We observed a couple getting drinks who arrived after we did, maybe they are regulars? The California rolls were not as cold as I expected and the Pho wasn't as hot as it should have been. Sushi was quite good, especially for a landlocked area. I had the Udon Soup, and I have had better. The broth was good, but it was loaded with iceberg lettuce for some reason and that really spoiled the flavor. Appetizers seem strong here, and the service was quick and polite. It's the best sushi you can find in Midland. They have anther location in Odessa as well. Overall everything is always really good. I'm giving 4 stars because at times the rice is not cold and I'm not a fan of warm sushi. Also the fish can be room temp. I prefer it to be cold cold. Makes me worry it can grow bacteria. First time trying this place and sadly the last time. I ordered the Odon noodles and some appetizers. When the plate of udon came it I didn't know what I was looking at first. It looked like a plate of tape worms in slimy sauce. The udon was WAY over cooked and tasted disgusting. We told the waitress we didn't want it and if we could try something else instead. Volcano: A subjective review Trying to find a select Japanese restaurant to quench my sensitive palate with their honorary food in Midland, TX can be an overwhelming job after having lived there for six months. From my personal experience, I learned that Japanese food is a delicacy, an art, that connects every Japanese person, whether they be native to the land or born elsewhere with a lineage relation; but to a visiting Hispanic-American, the texture, presentation, smell, and spiritual embodiment in the food metaphorically exudes their ancestor's diligence. With that being said, American Japanese restaurants have big competition for my taste after having dipped my feet in Japanese consciousness. I was in town for Father's day visiting family, relaxing, and reconnecting with old ancestry roots for a school project. I was two for three in being satisfied from my visit; my research drained my mind and I needed fuel to continue my work. I consider myself a native to Midland since I spent most of my young adult life growing up in the area and I had practically eaten everywhere. I'm not much a fan for the re-reoccurring of Mexican food, even though it's part of my heritage, and sought for a different food hideaway to spend my evening there. My helpful research partner suggested this newly opened restaurant in the Red Oaks Plaza called Wokcano, its official name. I say "official" because both the locals and Yelp have dubbed it Volcano. Provincial colloquialism? Whatever the cause for the disconnect, I chose to eat there and will always call it by its local name. I arrived about ten till six when there was still sufficiently decent parking spaces that weren't too far away from the front door. As all the locals can attest, eating out for lunch and dinner in Midland is hell on earth at trying to find a parking space that isn't half a mile walk away or finding (forcing?) creative new spaces. The high tower architecture that situates the front door works symbolically in tandem with its local name perfectly as both are tall, mysterious, and unpredictable. A sense of strong energy with peace and happiness to welcome all old and new patrons. Once inside, I was immediately greeted by the cheerful host but I was taken aback by the see-through wall of wines directly across his desk to not really acknowledge him automatically. I'm no self-professed connoisseur, but it doesn't take that mindset to appreciate the setup of the wine bottles, especially in the foyer, to give the impression that love and celebration are only the beginning of what to expect. We were seated in a booth for two, my partner and I, directly behind the host's desk, only separated by a white opaque glass panel wall with aesthetic Japanese drawings that still gave us privacy. Our waitress was patient enough to wait on me for my drink order that I was too immersed in the alcohol section that I could not just pick one. Luckily our waitress finally started asking questions about what flavor I was into. Dry? No. Hot? No. Sweet and Fruity? Ok. I decided to go with a Lychee flavored sake that came in a medium wine bottle. The added cherry on top of my new drink taste experience was the two shot glasses she poured them into. Sake is not new to me, but the service was very much appreciated and euphoric to being back in Japan. I already knew I wanted sushi and sashimi from the start and put an order in for the dinner for two love boat. The prices, in general, were not for the faint hearted, but with sake, I got the courage to order it still. While waiting, I took time to scan the layout of the place and found it to be very breezy; an easily moveable center area, like a chess board, with a dozen booths lined up along two walls in half, two kitchen counter sushi tables, one in the main sitting area and the other behind another opaque white glass. The other customers, a mix of locals and international travelers, who were eating there were smiling big and happy while eating their meals, which from my perspective in my booth gave me an upbeat expectation. And I was not disappointed. An actual boat with colored lights arrived carrying sushi, sashimi, wasabi, and ginger root. Every bite was heaven to my palate. Was seated and was waited on got ten minutes and to make matters worse someone had a child who screamed at the top of their lungs on and off for thirty minutes. Our waitress could not be understood at all. Their wine selection is not good and we ordered and did not get our appetizers until the meal. I will not be back. I feel 71.00 for the food and service is not good. Would I recommend this place, not on your life. The atmosphere us too loud and food so so. Over expensive and not worth the price. The waitress didn't seem to understand what we were asking and it just became a frustrating experience. We asked if they could make a sushi roll a specific way like a roll we order in El Paso and she said " no you can only order fom menu" and last time we were able to order it so that was disappointing. My wife and I moved here from dfw and were fairly disappointed with the Asian resturants in the area. We have been very happy with volcano. It is clean and modern inside. The staff is polite and helpful. And the food is fresh and very good. Some of the best teriyaki chicken I have had. I couldn't recommend it enough. Ok this place sure had me fooled by its name but the second we walked in and sat we already knew. This wasn't an authentic Japanese sushi/food restaurant.. it's a damn Chinese place masked by its wanna be name and nothing special, overpriced, fancy displayed sushi rolls! I grew up on the west coast, lived in Japan, been to Hawaii and ate at numerous LEGIT Japanese/sushi restaurants. THIS PLACE ISN'T IT! My husband ordered their "hibachi vokcano combo" and it was CRAP! Their UDON looked unappealing and noodles seem overlooked. And the rest of our other food was nothing to get happy about. The waiters hang over you wondering if your done with plate.. almost eager to take it away. Their decor and light fixtures is so tacky almost if they were trying too hard. The vibe for authentic Japanese/sushi place sure was not there. What a disappointment and joke. Definitely won't be back to waste my money here. Food sucked!!
