COCK-A-DOODLE-DO: I've found my newest temptation and it's Red Rooster! These waffles will keep you crowing! Too bad there's no storefront - you've gotta track down the cart. WAFFLE WAGON: This was my first stop at the latest SactoMoFo after I heard a lot of clucking about the infamous Volkswaffle Wagon. Surprisingly, there wasn't a line - I was worried that I'd have to put up a cockfight since I've heard this is a popular spot! Because this was a virgin rooster experience for me, I decided to go plain with just a light dusting of powdered sugar and I'm so glad I did. It was love at first bite! The waffle is not a traditional one that you'd get at IHOP and because of its richness, it's probably better as a snack than a full meal. It's lightly crispy and golden brown on the outside and densely doughnut-like on the inside. It's sweet, but not overbearingly so, and a little bit reminiscent of the beignets at Café Du Monde in New Orleans. The doughy texture melted in my mouth and I savored every bite, only to find myself wanting more! FANCY TOPPINGS: These waffles can be fancied up with exotic toppings, including strawberries, whipped cream, Nutella, and even a Klondike bar! I drove past here this last weekend and was so intrigued, I stopped on Monday for a mid-morning snack. I had 'The Most Wanted', which had the most delicious Belgian chocolate, organic strawberries, whipped cream and a drizzle of Nutella. The owner was there and was very nice and told me a little bit of the preparation that goes into each waffle. It was nice, he turned it from 'just getting a snack', to an experience. Price was 6.75, which I felt was very reasonable considering the quality of what you get. I literally had to pull over and start eating on the spot--it was that enticing looking! I admit that I wanted to like this truck more than I did. We got the waffle topped with "ice cream, strawberries and Nutella". I think this dish would be been excellent with a scoop of gourmet local ice cream, instead of a hard square slab of Klondike vanilla ice cream. But I could get over that. What I couldn't get over was calling the runny chocolate sauce they poured over it "Nutella". Oh honey, I KNOW what Nutella is. Nutella is thick, creamy, and has an element of hazelnut. I know it would need to be thinned out to work as a sauce, but I suppose I was expecting something thicker and more.... Nutella-like. I guess I couldn't get over the disappointment of the sauce. I was finally able to try this elusive waffle wagon and on Easter Sunday too! It was meant to be a glorious day! :) The owner was totally friendly explaining how these seemingly normal waffles are made. Perfectly carmelized on the outside, soft and lightly sweet on the inside.. served with strawberries, whipped cream, and nutella. It's cash only at $3.75 a waffle. And trust me, it completely blows out your previous notion of great waffles at waffle houses and even funnel cakes. Now that I know exactly where to find this waffle wagon... I'm planning on becoming a regular at this newly minted Volks Waffle! He's there every weekend on the Bayside Church campus. P.S. The affable owner even agreed to give us an IOU since we had ran out of cash. And drizzles of nutella. And powdered sugar. It's big enough to share between 2 or 3. It was not cloyingly sweet (I think the organics had something to do with it). OMG!! I have to stalk this uber-adorable waffle truck! Okay, first off, why did I think this was called Volkswaffel and not Red Rooster? I am so confused. I know I have the right truck though, so whatever! We came to the SactoMoFo Trucktoberfest in West Sacramento saturday night and I was instantly charmed by this vintage truck. I needed to get some protien into myself and my kids before we could even think about dessert and since we got there late in the day, I was just glad they didn't sell out before we got a chance to try them. The line was pretty long but it moved quickly. We were told about the waffles being made from dough rather than batter and that was intriguing. Being a chocolate and ice cream fan, I knew the chocolate waffle with the works was for us. A chocolate dipped waffle with a slab of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, a bunch of strawberry slices and a drizzle of nutella. It was so very very good. There were bits of sugar in the waffle that were crunchy and delicious. I only got about five or six bites before I handed off to my husband and toddler to demolish. They had it gone in no time flat. I could have easily eaten the whole thing on my own, but then I would have been a complete glutton. Someday I will track this truck down and eat a whole one AS my lunch. I want to learn to make waffles this tasty. I don't know what their secret is, but the waffles are like no other waffles you've ever tasted. They have a more doughy texture with a sweet (but not too sweet) flavor. I had mine with ice cream and nutella and was in absolute heaven. So many times, I've ordered waffles and have been disappointed. This waffle was the best I've ever had. I love the dessert waffle concept, but I do wish that they would do something savory, like chicken and waffles. Really good fried chicken with these waffles would blow my tastebuds away. They look like waffles, but thats where the similarity ends. The crispy outside of a funnel cake, soft and dense inside sort of like a mixture of a pancake and a sugar cookie, and little bits of crunchy sugar throughout. Eaten hot off the waffle-iron, with some cool strawberries, absolutely amazing. I think funnel cakes have just taken a fatal blow in my book. and these are probably marginally better for you, since they arent fried. The owner was friendly and very enthusiastic about explaining the waffle and having you try it different ways. This truck is definitely following the mantra to do one thing and do it great. Excellent waffles made from real, imported-from-Belgium live-culture dough (not batter!). Good fresh toppings too - made-on-site real whipped cream, strawberries, nutella, powdered sugar... so good. And the owners are wonderful, a very nice couple who are friendly and outgoing. I love the fact that the opposite side of their vehicle has a sink, too, so you can rinse off if you get a little sticky from the tasty sugar! The Belgian Waffles are soooo delicious. I wish I could eat one everyday but then I would get really fat. The man who owns this truck is just the cutest little man ever. He doesn't really know how to use Twitter so it's hard to find him. If you ask him about how he makes the waffles, he will go into detail about each ingredient and how it it imported from other countries. But being a fatty, it was very hard to listen because I was anxious to get my my hands on the waffles and ice cream! But the guy is very friendly. It's toasted with absolutely no imperfections just enough for a little crunch on the outside to accompany the crunch of the little sugar crystals. The texture and the taste is heaven in my mouth! Mediocre product and service. I will have to admit that I was particularly excited to try this place, I never thought I'd get another chance to try a real authentic Belgian waffle outside of Belgium. The dough the waffle was made of certainly seemed authentic to me, but the waffle itself was overcooked I think, it was tougher and drier than I hoped, and the fruit wasn't the freshest. Overall nothing felt special about this experience and I feel like you could get a better waffle elsewhere. (Although you won't find it as authentic, I'll give it that.) read more

Just learned about these "volks" (red volkswaffle wagon) last week and managed to get lucky and be in the same neighborhood during a SacMoFo event. We have been looking for a true waffle truck since seeing Waffles and Dingus on the food network. These beauties are fantastic! Crispy outside with that hint of caramelized sugar, light and doughy on the inside. I went with the works. My only issue was at first the ice cream "slab" was too hard and made the whole thing a bit hard to eat but then a little melt and we were off and running. Fantastic. This is my first true Liege waffle but most definitely not my last! Side note to Deirck below: Dude these are NOTHING like waffles from a breakfast shop! Not even close!!! The waffles are made from batter and contained a specialized waffle sugar in them. I tried the plain waffle with cinnamon and sugar and I felt that it came up short. the waffle I had was good, but not great. I expected a larger crunchy texture. This first time I tried the Volks Waffle I was at Carmichael park for one of the Sac MoFo events, I realllly liked it. Then I saw he was gettin a location and it happens to be around the corner from my work, dangerous, for me ha. I love the dough it is not like a cheesy waffle it is a real Hardy waffle and the thing I like about it the most is that there's no round ring edge which leads me to believe it came frozen out of a box these have where the grid goes to the edge so you know it was homemade. You can go as simple as just powdered sugar and cinnamon or strawberries with cream he'll even put ice cream on it just an amazing thing on a hot summer day. One of the best things to me though is the Nutella drizzle I love that. He is very friendly guy that will have no problem remembering you and making short conversation. I like to support local business that are ran by people doing what they are passionate about. So if you haven't checked it out come give them a try, guaranteed you will like it and you will be back.
