Awesome fried chicken! I had been hesitant to try the Korean fried chicken here, because I have an allergy to msg. However the Fried Chicken here has no msg, though the staff said that some of the sauces might have this chemical. The chicken is cooked to order, so you may have to wait a few minutes, but you're going to get it piping hot and fresh! It was a little pricey, $15 for a 10-piece chicken wing box, but it definitely was delicious! Parking can be a hassle in this area, but definitely worth the effort. I have had better chicken wings, at locations that specialize in free range chickens, but this is definitely an excellent option. Korean fried chicken is already another level, but Vons takes it even higher. I always crave Von's chicken because it is sooooo flavorful and crunchy! There are a good amount of flavors to choose from, but my favorite is the crispy shoyu chicken! The chicken is always so moist and crunchy, it never fails! Your order always comes out fresh and hot! I've heard the honey butter and snow fries are pretty bomb also, but my always go to is the shoyu. The mandoo is delicious also! Downside is they don't give any sauce with the mandoo. There is something about Von's chicken that has you coming for more!! It's that good and some! My favorite was the shoyu chicken till I had their honey buttery chicken. Wow!! Talk about sweet and buttery together...you get boom-bam-pow in your mouth while anticipating the next bite. Ok maybe it's just me! Third time that I've been to Von's Pensacola St. location. Made to order, so there can be a long wait, especially if there are phone orders. Fifteen minutes was about the wait time in this occasion. Chicken is good: crispy and well-seasoned. You get wings & drumettes. I've had regular, snow & spicy half orders. A bit pricy for the portions. The area has a few tables for dining but can be a bit cluttered...storage space issues? Mostly clean...it is nicely air-conditioned. read more

Ever since Vons Chicken made its debut (mid-2015) at Kalihi"s Palama Supermarket, we have been smitten with their Korean Fried Chicken aka KFC. My husband is a fried food lover so he was the one who "sniffed" out the deep frying goodness while we were marketing at that market. Unfortunately, that particular food stall in the Kalihi location closed. But, and fortunately opened 3 locations (Palama Market - Makaloa and Waimalu and this one one on Pensacola Street). This location is located at the corner of Pensacola and Young Streets. It's a stand alone Von Chicken business. There is usually metered street parking nearby or Shhh, you might be able to sneak in parking at the First Hawaiian Bank lot. We were out walking and enroute home when my husband exclaimed he was hangry for fried chicken. This Pensacola Street location was the closest to us so we stopped in. We were greeted by a middle aged man who apparently is the owner/cashier while his wife is the kitchen wizard. Eyeing out his menu boards we noticed that there were several items that we've not seen offered at the other Vons Chicken branches such as Snow Wing/Honey Butter Chicken, Crispy Real Garlic Chicken, Chicken Plates, Rice Cakes, Mandoo and cold beverages. The owner patiently described these items that we have not seen at the other branches since we asked about them but, my husband's hunger pangs focused in on the Crispy Fried Shoyu Chicken. FOOD: -Crispy Fried Shoyu Chicken: We ordered a full order as we were not only hungry but wanted to compare the flavor and texture. The chicken wings were plump, juicy and flavored well with the shoyu-based kalbi sauce flavor. The exterior crust was crunchy and crispy. We waited about 15-20 minutes for our order to be cooked then packed to-go. When we left we wanted to tear into the package as the delicious aromas wafted out into the air. We had to fully open the top of the container to allow the steam to escape since the chicken was hot out from the fryer. Our pace quickened to get home so we could dive into the KFC. It was worth the wait as the flavors and textures were consistently good as the other two branches. We paired the fried chicken with the banchan that we had just bought from another nearby Korean market. What can I say? The quality and flavors were consistent to what we've known Vons Chicken for. This location is convenient to us as walkers and we'd certainly stop in again when we're in this neighborhood. We're looking forward to trying their other menu items soon. read more

FLAVOR. Wow! We ordered the crispy fried chicken and the crispy shoyu chicken. Both are great but overall our favorite was the regular fried chicken. We know that Korean fried chicken is amazing but this was AMAZINGGG. We're still craving for more! When we got here we were greeted by a nice lady but it was not your ideal customer service. We didn't mind because we understood that it was almost closing time and she had other orders to prepare for take out. We ate our food around 20-30 minutes after getting it because we needed to make another stop. After waiting that long the regular fried chicken was still slightly crispy! The opportunity came up when a scuba buddy invited me to a Halloween get together. I originally tried to order from another Von's location, but they ran out of chicken wings. So I ended up making my order with this Pensacola Von's location. I got an estimated ready time of 20 minutes. Made my way down. This Von's is located at the corner of Pensacola & Young Streets on the mauka/ewa side. Only street parking available, very surprised to see a lot of open stalls available during prime dinner time of 6:30 pm on a Saturday. I believe street parking is unmetered after 5:30 pm. To cope with Covid times: no in-shop dining; a limited number of customers allowed in the shop at one time; masks are required; and staff wear masks & gloves. Made my way to the register and paid for my order. I had a half order of the shoyu wings (10 pieces), and a side order of mandoo (10 pieces). Estimate was pretty accurate, I didn't wait a few minutes until the order was ready. The wonderful smell of the Korean Fried Chicken permeated my car and tortured me as I made my way to the get together. After arriving I found out a couple of people where coming late, and it was just the host, me, and another guy, so we started to dig in. Very nice crispy texture, shoyu marinade a great balance of salty & sweet. We made quick work and soon there were nothing left but bones! The mandoo was kind of small and deflated, but they were a good palate cleanser. Total for the half order & mandoo was about $18, not bad. I'm always looking for good fried chicken and what's funny is that I actually live right around the corner and drive past it almost every day--so it was literally right under my nose. Vons Chicken is at the corner of Young St and Pensacola St. There isn't a designated parking lot so parking is kind of a hassle. You're gonna need to find street parking or park in the First Hawaiian Bank lot across the street. Ive only ever ordered half and full orders of chicken wings--half being about 12 wings and full about 20 to 24 wings. I asked the lady working which was the two most popular and she recommended the shoyu and the garlic so I got a half order of both. I'm gonna suggest that you call ahead because it did take a while for our food to get done--about 10 minutes. BUT let me tell you it was worth the wait! As soon as I got into the car with my wings my mouth started watering. I could smell the Garlic and Shoyu chicken (my car smelt like this the next morning too, but I wasn't mad about it). Finally got home, and dove face first into those wings. I'm not gonna say I ate ALL OF IT, but I will say my friend only had like 4 pieces in the time that inhaled 20 of them . Satisfies the Fried Chicken craving for sure! Customer beware - the spicy is pretty darn spicy! I can usually handle but after about 3/4 wings, I had to tap out because the spice kept building on top of each other. You must enjoy these while they are hot and fresh as the sauce will congeal when cooled making the wings soggy and not as appetizing. Personally - they aren't the best wings I've ever had but they are a top contender. Having travelled quite a bit, there are two different spots in Seattle and San Francisco that have tastier options. Located on the corner of Pensacola and Young St. This cute little hole in the wall has some good goods. The French fries are nice and crispy. The chicken is made to order- usually takes about 15 minutes. Girls here are friendly and will explain anything on the menu. Establishment is clean and neat. Bar style seating with only 3 chairs. Best to order ahead and grab and go. My first time at this Vons. Gave it a try because I know we love the Kaimuki Vons and it was in a convenient location. Stop by and give it a try. Parking is hard to find so maybe parking across at FHB. Don't see any tow signs there and lots of cars coming and going to the surrounding establishments. read more

My buddy Fran C is a fried chicken connoisseur so when he suggested Vons Chicken, I knew it was gonna be good! Crispy skin, juicy meat, and loads of flavor. Plus, service includes plastic gloves for your hands... no finger lickin necessary! The Pensacola location has one advantage to the one in Palama Market on Makaloa Street, namely it's adjacent to Teruya's Bento. So while our friend placed half orders each of the shoyu and garlic fried chicken, I was able to pick up a vegetarian bento and sweet potato mochi to accompany the chicken. Dine in is tight as there is only one table and a counter, but most people just order take out as street parking can be tight. Price wise, Vons is expensive compared to other fast food chicken, but to their credit every order is made fresh and worth the wait. Check em out! read more

***4.5 STARS*** The hype on Von's is real folks. Yes, it's KFC, also known as Korean Fried Chicken that is. Not to be confused with Colonel Sanders ya know. :p My first experience was several years ago when they were in Palama Supermarket on N King Street. Some friends and I were so excited and although the chicken wings are made-to-order fresh, I just wasn't "wowed". Just standard fried chicken wings. Fast forward a couple of years where Von's has expanded to several locations and super Elite Lyla D . I noticed Lyla's multiple check in's and noticed her brining Von's on multiple occasions to UYE's that I didn't attend. I highly respect Lyla's food standards so I gave this place another try last night. My family is impartial and just raves over Itchy Butt, which also boasts KFC. On a rare night off and still battling the tail end of the flu, I dropped by my sister's home with food as she also didn't have to work. I did a side-by-side comparison of KFC from Von's and Itchy Butt to see which one stood out. Wanting freshly made chicken I dragged favorite nephew by default with me to pick up food at several restaurants. Luckily we found street parking on Pensacola and as we walked in we were semi greeted by a middle aged Korean man who could have given more enthusiasm as we came to buy food from him. Not sure if he was happy being there. Regardless of the staff's lack of enthusiasm, we ordered our chicken and was advised an approximate waiting time. For fresh food I don't mind waiting and appreciated being informed what to expect. While waiting more people walked in. Some called in and witnessed a couple who called the wrong Von's location for a take out. The staff could have phrased it better as checking to see which number he dialed as there was no apparent order received. But then again perhaps English is not the staff's native tongue but it was a little painful listening to their conversation. Staff was too blunt with customer. Needs help with customer service. The VERDICT: Von's KFC is AMAZING. We had both the crispy fried shoyu and the crispy fried spicy seasoned wings. Deep fried until perfection with no oily residue. Although Itchy Butt makes great KFC, clearly the overall favorite was Von's. There are some tables for dine-in but noticed everyone during my stay opted for take out. If you're paying via cash bring extra as it's pricey here. If not, credit cards are accepted. Overall, I was impressed with the food quality and despite the lack of enthusiasm from the staff a very solid experience here at Von's and I'll be back for sure. NOTE: To me the fried spicy seasoned chicken tastes so much like the Japanese/Chinese dish of EBI CHILI SAUCE. Sooooooo good! read more

I was craving for chicken and had already eaten Popeyes chicken the other day so I figure let's go to KFC, but they were so busy so I went on YELP and booom, found this place. I've never heard of this place ever, but I'm glad I did. They appear to be like a Korean flavored chicken place. They sell a bunch of different flavored chicken wings, mandoo, and spicy rice cake. I ordered half order (10pcs for $12) of garlic chicken wings, spicy chicken wings, and shoyu chicken wings, and an order of mandoo (10pcs for $4). It's a bit more on the pricier side compared to my favorite Popeyes, but it is definitely worth the price. Totally forgot to take pics of the chicken because ate them so fast. The mandoo are small, but still pretty cheap for the amount. Parking is horrible because there are very limited street parking on a one way street so if you can't find anything then you gotta drive back around. You can park in the WalGreen parking lot across the street, but I'd highly recommend making a phone order because I had to wait for my order a bit long. Very impressed with their garlic chicken which was tender on the inside and perfectly lightly breaded and crisp on the outside. It was the garlic sauce for me tho! Not to sticky sweet nor was it over garlicky. They really figured out how to cook fried chicken perfectly. The portions were good for the cost which was $14 which included rice, corn and Mac salad. After a disappointing experience at a Korean fried chicken hof on Kapahulu, I was still in search of authentic Korean fried chicken in Honolulu. I've walked by Vons Chicken many times this year, but never went inside. Perhaps I had the sense that this restaurant's chicken would be dangerously addictive to the point where it would be hard to resist eating there regularly. I was close to being good and going to the Subway next door for lunch, but after my coupon was rejected, I took it as a sign that it was time to give Vons Chicken a try. I asked for the half order (10 pcs.) of Crispy Fried Chicken for $11.99. The wait is approximately 15 minutes. I had no problem with this because I'd rather have my chicken fresh and hot right out of the fryer rather than sitting under a heat lamp for hours. There are Styrofoam cups and a water cooler dispenser by the cash register, so there is no need to pay for a water bottle. As I waited I could tell by the sizzling sounds of the deep fryer in the kitchen that this chicken was going to be good. While I waited, many other people came in to pick-up their orders. The staff here appear to be professional, courteous, and polite. When I received my box of chicken, the waitress asked if I wanted a bag for take out. It was raining outside and I couldn't wait to dig in while the chicken was still hot, so I chose to ate at the restaurant. I was given napkins and a paper plate. As expected, this chicken is legit Korean Fried Chicken like the kind I had in South Korea. My order came with five succulent wings and five legs. Korean Fried Chicken has crispier skin and the overall taste and texture is lighter than the heaviness of southern style fried chicken. I thought I was hungry enough to eat the entire box, but eating a little over half of my order was enough to fill me up. I was given a plastic bag to take the rest home to enjoy. Vons offers the best fried chicken in Makiki. I am gradually making my way through all of the restaurants in this neighborhood, and I continue to be pleasantly surprised that many of these lesser known small businesses offer some of the best food in the city. UNFORTUNATELY when I arrived for the pickup the cashier told me someone else had just picked up my order and left with it. Ugh. Had to re-order and wait 15-20 mins. KFC! KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN. I know this might sound crazy but I've never had Von's chicken before! I've always seen it, heard it & passed by, but never thought it was worth visiting. I had a conference nearby and Von's didn't have a long line at the time so we stopped in to order lunch. There are about 5-6 ways you can have your crispy fried chicken seasoned & the lady recommended Shoyu for my first time. You'll have a choice between boneless chicken and bone in wings. I ordered the chicken plate of shoyu bone in wings. The plate came with rice, Mac salad, chicken wings and mandoo. Each order of chicken seems to be fried to order, it came out crispy and golden brown. The wings were juicy and not dry at all. I was pleasantly surprised & kept saying how tasty it was. The plate came with 4 wings and I wish there was more, but it hit the spot. I'm definitely a Von's fan now & will definitely be returning to one of their many locations. read more
