In the world of donuts, Voodoo Doughnuts isn't really going to blow your mind. The novelty factor here is high, and if you've been to Portland, you know that there's ten other options that Portlanders go to for their fix. That being said, I know that Voodoo makes for a great Instagram photo, and that's the real reason why I ended up here before taking off for home. I went (6/29/19) to have a doughnut because I'd head such good things. The doughnuts were great. The homeless person panhandling at the display case, not so great. This is the first VD I have visited outside the Portland area and it was just as good as I remember from the Portland area. I got a "Vegan Dozen" and an extra custard filled doughnut -- no lines, no waiting if you go in the middle of the day on a weekday -- and we are set for tomorrow's 5am wakeup to get on the road to Wichita Falls in the morning! The vegan doughnuts are just as good as Portland - the custard filled doughnuts are so amazing, you would never know they were vegan (according to my non vegan friend). The main problem is parking -- downtown Austin is a hot mess when it comes to parking, even on a weekday. It wasn't like this in the 90s - before they put up a bajillion high rise buildings. It's not even like there's a lot of traffic down there but there's just NO PARKING. Go with a friend and be prepared to walk a few blocks to the doughnut shop. read more

The first time I came here, July of 2016, I was excited for the extravagant doughnuts and the atmosphere and was genuinely pleased. Second time around, not so much. Beat the long line, but I'm guessing that's because people didn't want to wait when it was hotter inside the building than it was outside! You could tell the AC didn't work from the view of fans pointing at the cashier's registers and the fact that it's too hot for the ice machine to make any ice. So donuts, I stayed in my comfort zone and got something I'd had before that I liked. I got the Grape Ape, WAY sweeter than I remember. It was almost hard to finish, due to the sweetness of it and the fact that the icing was practically melting off from how hot it was inside the building. When donuts can completely make up for a far less than satisfactory service experience, you know they're good! We came here a little late on a Sunday night. I've been following VooDoo donuts since they only had the one shop in Portland, and this place has been on my Bucket List foreverrr. I was practically skipping through the doors. Interior is bright, pink and full of chandeliers! Lots of cool things to look at, as well as a live band! They have their menus above the registers on screens that slowly cycle through the different styles of donuts. We were second in line, this shouldn't take too long, right? WRONG, SO WRONG! I was fully prepared to wait for these donuts, but what I witnessed was just plain crazy! There were about 6 or 7 people working. I get that you have to make donuts constantly to keep up with the demand, but when there is only one person at the register and I can see 3 people standing around in the back with their arms crossed just talking, I get a little upset. We were second in line and waited over 30 mins to be served. The line behind us grew fast and by the time we were finally served, the line was practically out the door. Several times I saw workers just kind look at the line, then run to the back. I was legit feeling bad for the one guy working the register, he seemed a bit stressed and on edge. I don't blame him, I would be too had it been me in his position. I ordered a Maple Blazers Blunt and a Diablos Rex. Jon got the Bacon Maple Bar, Oh Captain, My Captain, and the Portland Cream. Good god, after the first bite of my Diablos Rex, the terrible service felt like it was a distant memory. "Wait, wasn't I just upset about something? Hmm, I can't really remember cuz all I can think about is how they managed to pack chocolate cake, chocolate frosting and chocolate chips together so harmoniously, without the chocolate being overpowering." BRAVO! The red sprinkles and vanilla pentagram were the perfect accents. I inhaled that Diablos Rex sooo fast. Maple Blazers Blunt was a Blunt shaped donut, rolled in cinnamon sugar with the end dipped in maple frosting, then dipped in red sprinkles. Umm TOO CUTE! A blunt shaped donut, I've seen it all now! Donut itself was fluffy and delicious, churro-like and fun to eat. I've had cereal donuts before, but at VooDoo, they come at you with a cereal donut so correct, it will make you not want any other cereal donuts, period. For me, whatever the mixture is that they use to make the "milk" frosting under the cereal topping is FUEGO! Realllllly made all the difference, it wasn't a glaze, but not necessarily frosting either. Genius! Portland Cream was also fabulous. Raised yeast donut with Bavarian Cream, chocolate dipped with vanilla eyeballs. The Cream was spectacular, not just your average Bavarian. Couldn't quite put my finger on what was different in the Cream, must Be that VooDoo Magic. The Neopolitan was my favorite doughnut, but unfortunately they discontinued it. I tried the Raspberry Romeo - a jelly-filled yeast doughnut. The jelly was just a twinge too sweet for my taste buds, but the actual doughnut was yummy. Also ordered a blueberry cake doughnut - one of my favorites because it's not overly sweet and isn't dry. The prices are good in my opinion. They use to be cash-only, but now accept cards! The interior is bright, colorful, and pretty large. There's a fair amount of seating, but tables can be dirty at times. Service has always been pretty quick and friendly for me. I had been to the original one in years ago Portland, and this was as good as I remembered it. I went with the classic voodoo doll donut, which is raspberry filled deliciousness. You get the same sadistic feeling as when you bite off the different parts of gummy bears... and every bit as yummy. I also got a nitro cold brew coffee that was great.
