Was in East Austin and saw that there was no line at Rockman Bakery so decided to pop in. I have been wanting to try it for a while but there is always a long line so had to take advantage of this opportunity. When I walked in, I immediately noticed the display of pastries that all looked amazing. There were so many options to choose from. I was only planning to try one or two and ended up coming out with 5 pastries because I could not make up my mind. You wait in line and order at the counter. The staff was friendly and responded to my questions about the pastries and helped me to make a decision. Some of the pastries I tried were the pecan bar, guava cheesecake danish, everything bagel croissant, seasonal kouign amann an a craquelin. I took my items to-go and everything was packed nicely for the journey home. When I got home, everything tasted fresh and had unique and creative flavor combinations. I was day tripping from San Antonio and heard very great things about this place. The hype was definitely lived up to and their bagels are so chewy yet fluffy and soft like a pillow. I had a French onion dip smear and it was so delicious. Every other pastry was so great and very fulfilling. The staff were super friendly and were so efficient with pumping out orders. I ordered the flan and a tiramisu iced latte: The latte tasted like chocolate mille- wouldn't order again but I did enjoy the fluffy cream topping. the passion fruit flan was a great consistency but I give it 3.5 for flavor- might not have been what I was thinking it would be. Overall pretty good experience. The shop is spacious and cute, with friendly workers but the line moves slowly. Regarding the goods, we were blown away by the croissants (both sweet and savory) and thoroughly enjoyed the fun drink offerings. The service is also great with friendly staff behind the counter and while it is small inside, I've always been able to find a seat. What I think I love most about Rockman is that they are consistent. I can go at any time and they will have most of their goods available. Last Sunday, I visited La Barbecue, and while waiting in line, I stepped away briefly to try the cute-looking Rockman Coffee and Bakeshop. Outside, the green text of "ROCKMAN" shined on the off-white building, luring me in. I also happen to love the song "Rockman" by Mk.gee, so I decided it was only fair to check it out. I ordered a simple vanilla latte, which would tell me if their coffee game was there. I really adore the color inside Rockman. It feels playful, with the colors green and yellow prevalent throughout the interior. The tables and chairs connected to the building as well, and it all just felt cohesive. Even the La Marzocco was green! The coffee just HAD to be good if the vibe was like this. Knowing I was about to destroy some BBQ, I wasn't willing to add pastries to the equation, but they looked incredible. If the coffee hit, I knew I would definitely come back to try them. The coffee hit. The balance between espresso, milk, and the flavor shot is always so important to me in a coffee, and Rockman was up there as one of the best coffee shops I have been to in Austin. Those pastries really look next level, so I know I'll be crawling my way back to East Cesar Chavez soon enough to give them a go. A nice spot! I stopped in before my flight for some last-minute pastries and really enjoyed my experience. While the line was long and did take a while the place was not overly crowded and we were able to sit down to have our pastries. The pimento scone was surprisingly good - wasn't something I was planning on grabbing, but was intrigued and very happy I did. The chocolate chip cookie was to die for and definitely the best thing on the plate. The Kougin was good, but honestly, it didn't really impress me too much and I wish I got something else instead. Oh yesss this is the best bakery in Austin! We've tried a variety of croissants, kouign amann, oat cookie, nut horn cookie, golden milk danish, and best of all the guava and cheese danish. Literally the guava and cheese is my favorite pastry I've had in Austin. This place was hyped up so much I had really high expectations. I'll start with what I loved: the hot banana oatmilk chai latte - absolutely hands down delicious. Now for what I didn't love - I ordered many pastries and was majorly let down. The snickerdoodle cookie was hard and stale; the oatmeal cream pie used cream cheese frosting I think and I absolutely despise that type of frosting so it was a no from me. They have a sign on the door that said there's free street parking on 2nd Street and Clara. Other reviews said they have a 15min free parking in the parking lot next to the shop. Otherwise, it's paid to park at $4.50 an hour. The employee was very nice and recommended some good items to try. The cashier was kind enough to mention there's free water near the door. The ambience is nice inside and feels clean. They have a menu of drinks with prices but there's no menu to see the pastries and its prices. No prices for the pastries anywhere and I don't see how that's appropriate given their pastries prices are steep. It's fine if the prices are reasonable but it's offsetting when it's higher than expected. A sauce size of schemer is $4 and a tiny bagel is $8.25. I don't love that as a customer and I would like to not support that as a norm at bakeries. I don't understand why that makes sense to not list the price of the pastries and expect customers to blindly agree to whatever price they set it too. It's inconvenient to the customer to not display prices. Customers don't want to as the prices of individual pastries and employees don't want to remember them. Ordered a bagel with butter & a lemonade. After waiting 5 minutes for my lemonade and watching people after me get coffee drinks, I politely asked the barista, who was just standing there, if she had my lemonade. She replied "I don't have one on my end, do you want to pay for one?". I told her I had paid for one - my bill was around $10 dollars. She searched on her device, found it, and went "oh". Got my lemonade, mumbling under her breath, not acknowledging her mistake of not even checking before implying I never paid for it. We all make mistakes but I found her implications and lack of acknowledgment of her own mistake really off-putting. Ultimately my 12 oz of lemonade was about 4 oz with the amount of ice she put in. He waved me off and so I rolled down my window to ask what he was doing and he said that he works for the parking company and he was issuing tickets. He waved me off because I was sitting in my car. He was nice enough to tell me that Rockman's does have a few 15 minute parking spots that I clearly missed. Upon entering Rockman's there is a huge note on the door regarding parking and I attached a photo below. Since this was my first time, it took me forever to decide, so I got the following: Ham/cheese/mustard croissant, apple almond croissant, cinnamon roll, white sesame bagel with loaded lox, chocolate chip cookie croissant and a chocolate chip cookie latte. OMG...everything was DELICIOUS! So much so, that I went back 2 weeks later and tried churro croissant, almond poppyseed lemon cake, pecan bar, everything bagel with garlic herb smear, seasonal basque cake and the everything bagel croissant. Rockman Coffee and Bakeshop is one of those places you go to that so many people hype up on social media to the point that your expectations are extremely high, but when you actually go to try it, you start to wonder why you ever trust random strangers on the internet (including me). I have somehow found myself at Rockman's on three separate occasions and somehow never took pictures, but I still remember what I've eaten. Pastries/Desserts: - Chocolate Croissant: A run of the mill croissant with a small amount of chocolate that was low key laughable. Nothing that's stands out but still solid. - Cinnamon Roll: I bought this one for my girlfriend, and both of us were shocked at how dry/hard it was. It tasted like day old bread that had been left out overnight. Not bad, but no where near good. - Chocolate Chip Cookie Croissant: Definitely one of their better desserts. The cookie butter glaze was the winner on this one for sure. Recommend this one. - Pecan Triangle (couldn't find the name online) - this was actually my favorite thing that they had. Extremely good and would recommend but it looks like they don't sell it anymore. - Matcha: my girlfriend ordered a Matcha and they completely forgot any sort of sweetener. That's usually not an issue, but I just found it surprising that they didn't even ask. Overall: I really want to be able to recommend this place. I love the decor and the idea of Rockman, but three separate times of having a mediocre experience at best is hard to argue on my side. In my opinion, all of the pastries were very dense in weight and in flavor. The cinnamon roll was very think. The churro croissant and the everything bagel croissant wasn't as crispy and flaky as I would like. Had good flavor, but very think. First things first, it sucks to pay for parking, so I recommend finding elsewhere on 2nd st instead of the lot. The line wasn't too bad for a Saturday morning, we waited maybe 25 minutes to order. The baked goods case is beautiful once it's your turn to take a gander. We received a sample of the lemon poppyseed loaf and it was magnificent and moist. Amongst our group we ordered the chocolate cookie croissant, smores croissant, churro croissant, bagel and french onion shmear. Washed it down with a tiramisu latte, and when I tell you everything was absolutely delicious, you need to be on the way to Rockman now. The latte came with a ladyfinger on top, and the 'cold foam' lookalike was actually like a pudding. Yet the drink was not too sweet which I loved. When you enter, there's a sign saying to rip & dip the bagels. The bagels were crunchy yet fluffy and the french onion shmear was the perfect savory to offset our sweet trays. I have mixed feelings about Rockman. I visited later in the morning on Presidents' Day, so I knew it could be busy due to the holiday. When I walked in, there wasn't a line. The issue was that there were not many pastries left to choose from. I could've walked away and come back another day, but I decided to try the kouign amann, which was light and croissant-like on the inside and gooey crisp on the outside. Definitely recommend. I also got a pecan bar for later that was decadent. The pastries were hands-down delicious. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I actually tried items I might not have. Their latte was also really good. Not to mention, their employee was incredibly nice and answered all my questions. I think this is an easy fix because if they anticipate a crowd on weekends and holidays, they can hopefully increase the amount of pastries in advance so there are not several disappointed people walking in later in the morning.
