I hadn't been in over 10 years, but after another spot in the area completely frustrated us, we ended up at Stan's and instantly remembered why this place has survived for decades. Remember the old TV show Cheers? That's the vibe. Everybody seems to know everybody. The kind of loud where you have to lean in to hear your friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] At first, it looked like there was absolutely no chance we'd get a seat, but the staff stayed on it and worked hard to make it happen. It took a while because this isn't the type of place where people eat and leave. Folks settle in, order another round, and stay for hours. Speaking of rounds, the bartenders do not believe in weak drinks. The pours were generous and then some. Now let's discuss the real star of the show: THE CHICKEN WINGS. Every table seemed to have an order. Every person walking by seemed to have a basket. Everyone knows you come to Stan's for two things: strong drinks and those famous chicken wings. They absolutely lived up to the hype. After about a 45-minute wait, we finally scored seats at the bar. I've been here a few times now. The first time I came with one of my girlfriends and we were able to sit at the bar. We came on a Thursday night I believe it was definitely packed but we came at the same time a couple was leaving. Our bartender was very sweet. She told us some of her menu favs and gave us a few recommendations. We ordered a couple of drinks. Just right! Not too strong and not to weak :) I ordered the chicken sandwich... Friday evening around 6:30, party of four, dining in. We waited maybe five minutes to be seated. The host was great -- super accommodating and even let us switch from a table to a booth so we could be more comfortable and out of the way. That small gesture set a good tone right off the bat. Service is where things got a little bumpy. Our server wasn't rude, but she had very low energy and honestly looked like she'd rather be anywhere else. As first-time visitors, that dulled the experience a bit. When we switched seats, we ended up crossing into another server's section, which caused some confusion since both servers were helping us for a short time. The guy whose area we moved into had great energy and was really friendly -- things probably would've gone smoother if he had taken over completely. We still planned on tipping the original server because of the confusion, but we did have to ask multiple times for things, and she would disappear at times. I wouldn't have minded if the wings came fully doused in it. People argue all day about the best mumbo sauce in the city, but whatever they're serving here deserves to be in that conversation. The drinks live up to the hype. They're strong -- very strong. You're looking at around $20 a drink, but it makes sense when they're pouring about four ounces per drink. If you order something like a rum and coke, don't be surprised if you get a cup full of rum and a smaller cup with coke to mix. The ratios might be a little wild, but you could easily make two drinks out of one... though where's the fun in that? My favorite of the night was the Ciroc Obama. I'm usually an Old Fashioned guy, and while it was strong, it wasn't my favorite. Lemon drops were also solid and one of the few drinks that came fully mixed. As someone who constantly complains about weak drinks, this place delivered. Despite a few service hiccups, we were in good company and still had a great night. I have been to Stan's plenty times (dinner) and they are known for their fried wings and heavy pours (if you're a drinker) well, their Brunch isn't very popular and I can see why... There is no bottomless mimosa option. This isn't a terrible thing since they are known for heavy pours but a personal (mini) bottle of la Marca for $14+ USD is asinine. I stuck with the usual golden margarita. - I don't know what happened this visit because it was disgusting. Tasted heavily based in OJ I struggled to get through it. In fact, I didn't finish it and ordered a tequila neat. The service was great since no one else was there. Literally there was only one person sitting at the bar and then us at the table. We arrived at noon. People started coming around 1:30 PM EST but it still wasn't as packed as I'm accustomed to Stan's being. We had space to spread out and that's never happened before. Music was playing- so the vibe was there. Food: the food looks better than it tasted. I ordered an omelet and it was jam packed with veggies but still bland. I thought it could have been cheesier. My friend ordered waffles (again they look amazing) but she said they were just "ok" and "look better in the picture" we split a half order of wings (again they were the best thing on the menu). I ordered a side of bacon thinking it would be four pieces for $6 USD as stated on the menu but there were near seven pieces of bacon. This would have been great if they were delicious and crispy but they were chewy and just ok. I ended up only eating two pieces. By far, the best chicken wings I have ever had. No other restaurant that I have visited to enjoy chicken wings comes close. Located on the corner of Vermont and L in City Center down a winding flight of stairs in the basement, Stan's is a superb local hangout spot with great vibes, food, and drinks to go around. My server Jacks Jacks (or Jackie) was awesome, and made me feel at home as I quickly determined my drink order and my food order. Throughout the evening, she made sure I had what I needed for water, extra napkins, additional cocktails. She was superb. And as I said at the beginning... THE BEST CHICKEN WINGS I HAVE EVER ATE. I ordered a full portion of uncut wings that were deep fried and battered with a mixture that was simply divine. I am a flats person systematically removing the bones and cartilage to enjoy the perfectly crispy skin and piping hot meat was a joy. Pure joy. Technically, you didn't need the buffalo sauce from the serving bowl in the middle. Because the wings were sooooooo good by themselves. I devoured the drums while some of the flats needed to cool down, using these to dip into sauce. I couldn't get over how delicious the fried battered skin was on the wings. Perfectly cooked, juicy, the skin just magic in your mouth. Also I enjoyed a couple of cocktails: the sidecar was solid, but the deconstructed Paloma was quite a trip. At Stan's, they prepare the cocktail by pouring your choice of tequila (I did Don Julio) in a tall glass 3/4th full with a side of pink grapefruit juice. You determine how much grapefruit juice you want in the tequila glass. I am pretty sure there was at least two shots, maybe three of tequila. I was feeling footloose and fancy free after that drink, let me tell you. I had the grin and was feeling thin. I also enjoy the joys of lemon cake with a side of vanilla ice cream that was the perfect compliment for a good evening out. And you. Can't go wrong having a good evening out at Stan's. I can believe that people will treat you this way. I like to tip big. He lost that tip from me. He is a bit older, but he has to learn how to cater to every cultural. He needs to be taught that if he is not careful a lawsuit for discrimination will be filled against him! Remember everyone does not treat everyone the same way! When I went the timing lined up perfectly because it was still happy hour and I found a parking spot right in front of the restaurant (winning lol). On top of that we got a tequila sour and a beer. The drink was strong and the wings were fried to perfection. They could've had a little more seasoning in my opinion but still delicious and paired well with the mumbo sauce. Everything else was your average bar food. We ended up leaving with left over wings and paying about $50 which I think is not bad for drinking and eating in the city and leaving full. Heard about this place for many years , many years ! Heard this was the number one spot for the fried chicken... I finally made it here and it was for lunch. Something told me to get the either the salmon or shrimp salad or a sandwich but the bartender insisted on saying get the wings.... I ordered takeout and I don't know how many chef's are in the kitchen but the wait is a little lengthy . If you're at work and going here on your lunch, I suggest you call ahead. customer service was okay. it wasn't good or bad ( I guess) The energy I did get was very stern ... Unless you're a regular ( noticed ) Finally got the food and went back to work... The chicken was not all that. FIRST AND FOREMOST -I CAN TELL THEY DO NOT PROPERLY CLEAN THE CHICKEN FROM HOW MUCH HAIR WAS ON IT - I ended up not eating the skin ( too much hair) I like my chicken crispy , which they were but some wasn't done fully on the inside! ( lower the temp) ! I am a FRIE fanatic and didn't care for it . They were sticking together and bland . I was highly disappointed that I wasted $26 on wings and fries! Finally writing a review for a must-visit and staple in DC. Stan's offers a laid back, causal environment to catch up with friends over drinks and wings. The wings were crispy, fully cooked, and offered with their signature mumbo sauce. The fries were served freshly hot. The drinks were STRONG as expected. I am knocking off a star because the service was delayed. My party reached around 11:30 and was immediately seated; however, we noticed that people who were seated after us received their food before us despite ordering almost exact orders. To be clear, Stan's, the DC Institution, get's 5 stars. The food gets 2. Let me explain. Tonite, we wanted to go to Stan's to watch the Commanders Eagles game but it was too cold to venture out. So we watched at home and ordered the wings via DoorDash. And that's when we realized that it's those strong pours that make the wings so great. At home, they were HUGE (not a plus), under seasoned, and rubbery. We both tapped out after 1 and a half. The point, Stan's is about the experience and the dranks, not the food. If you go in knowing that, you'll be fine. But the folks who say these are the best wings in DC are drunk! LOL read more

Stans is a staple in DC on 16th street. It can get pretty hectic but the service is pretty decent. Crowded seating but perfect for a pregame or nightcap. The drinks are pricey but they are always strong. Oh, order the chicken wings. You won't be disappointed! read more
