I've been here twice. I don't get it. First time took over an hour to get an order in and served drinks. This time we sat for just under ten minutes without a menu given to us after they told us to grab a seat. I think this place is for certain type of people, and if it fits you great, if it doesn't, you won't like it. It is extremely laid back from the setting and decor to the staff and general atmosphere. It is not "upscale" or upbeat at all, but I think if you could enjoy that type of vibe then this place can be for you. If you're looking for 100% absolutely customer-friendly service, it won't be for you-- the employees are not shy to express that the restaurant is just as much about them as it is about the customers. I read someone's review who called the place quirky, but all I could think was FILTHY! Whatever profit they are making they are not putting back into the place. It is such a shame because our food was really quite good, but I think they are missing a huge opportunity to gain new customers by cleaning the place up some. Date Visited: Wednesday 11/24/10 (Dinner) We arrived in Olympia and got settled before heading out. It was a cold and wet night with patches of snow leftover from the storm that invaded the Pacific Northwest that week. Since we had a large lunch earlier in the day, Spazz and I killed some time and went out to get some beverages and snacks for our B&B stay. On the way back to the B&B, we decided we would go for a late dinner. Downtown Olympia is an interesting place. We parked just outside of Le Voyeur. The front area seemed to be for eating while the back area was focused on drinking and live entertainment (when there was some). We sat in the front area and were given menus by one of the two employees there. Our order was then taken by the other employee. I wasn't terribly hungry, so I just ordered the Grilled Cheese sandwich with French Fries and a Diet Coke. The first issue came with the Diet Coke. I'm not exactly sure what the problem was, but it just tasted wrong. I tried to drink it, but it was really "off". When our server came back around, I asked if I could swap it out with a Root Beer. This was done and I was a much happier camper. Our food was served. The dark lights made it hard to really get a good look at the food. It tasted pretty good. The fries were not bad. During our somewhat short stay, several interesting characters came into the restaurant. One was asking for food and said he had money, but he clearly didn't have enough money for a meal. He left and returned a short time later, asking the other patrons in the restaurant if they could buy him something. He was asked to leave by the staff. Another colorful strange character came in and said some things that seemed directed to the staff before being asked to leave as well. It was just a weird experience and when Spazz brought up my glass to get a refill on the Root Beer, he came back and said he got a look from our server as if he was interrupting a private conversation and that our server would get to the drink when she got to it. It did take a while. I could have finished another glass of Root Beer in the time it took her to bring my drink out. Downtown Olympia is definitely not my favorite place to hang out. Le Voyeur is definitely not my favorite place to eat. Chances are unlikely that we will return to this place even though I did find the food decent. I just didn't find our server to be very friendly. Perhaps she would have treated us better if we were in the bar ordering more expensive drinks or something. Oh well. At least we weren't the first to find the service lacking friendliness. read more

Le Voyeur is my absolute favorite haunt for non-breakfast food. Their drinks are strong and well-crafted and I often fantasize about their menu while I'm other places. I believe that their best items are their garlic fries, the Spicy Crispy sandwich (delicious with tofu or chicken), the Tofu Broccoli Dance, Pita Platter, and Veggie Delight. Their soups are always amazing and always vegan ( cream of mushroom is my favorite). Lots of folks have gripes with the staff. I think the staff members are really nice and cool~ conversational enough without being creepy/over-stepping boundaries. I guess I have met a few staff members who are a bit standoffish but honestly, if you are nice/respectful to these workers, they are nice to you. I see a lot of comments that if you aren't pierced/alternative, they will not be nice to you. Wrong. I have brought my parents here (in their late 50s) as well as other non-Olympia guests. All have been treated with respect. Honestly, the only people I've seen treated "rudely" were bros. Bros who were openly mocking the gender neutral bathrooms and actually drew a dong under one of the gender neutral figures. So yeah, the "rudeness" was freaking necessary. Love the food at Le Voyeur! MMMM GARLIC GIVE IT ALL TO ME. YUM NOMNOM. They have this dish that I call "the exploding avocado"...it's basically a gigantic avocado with a bunch of beans and rice thrown on top. They put this delicious habanero coconut sauce on top that just blows my mind. That's my favorite meal there. The fries, an oly legend, are indeed salty and garlicy, perfect for consuming during a night of bar hopping. I've also tried a bunch of their sandwiches, never disappointed. The tempeh reuben, black bean burger, veggie wrap, and jerk sandwich are all tasty. If you're not in the mood for fries as a side, try one of their great salads. It's not a wussy salad with two ingredients and watery dressing! Oh no, there's generally broccoli, tomatoes, crisp lettuce, carrots, chickpeas, and more on there. I love the lemon tahini dressing. So much better than any dressing I've ever bought from a store. Their food is great, their beer and cocktails are great, but sometimes the service can be a little...slow. I don't go there when I'm in a hurry. So if you're one of those people that has a fit if you don't get seated/served immediately you might want to go somewhere else. read more

Great place, original and unique food that's hard to compare to any other place I've been to, at least here in the pacific northwest. Fun place to drink and hang out at too. Colorful, strange, kind of grungy aesthetic. If you eat meat you should try the vegan food here anyways, you'll understand how being vegan does not suck as much as you might think. The service ranges from kind of meh to cold and I've gone here a lot over the years. Which I don't care about much unless it takes way too long for me to get my food or whatever I'm drinking. The people who work here don't put up with any bullshit which I can respect. The scent of garlic is too overwhelming for me sometimes. The back/bar area is pretty awkward, mainly because of a large triangular booth in the middle of that room that really messes with the flow of people traffic on busy nights. One of the main hipster hangouts in a town relatively full of them, you know what you're getting into when you come to Le Voyeur. The place is extremely vegan friendly, which is a plus if that is your culinary choice. Even as a meat eater, I have to admit that they do cook their tempeh and tofu well. The main draw for me, however, are the fries - they keep me coming back. I do love me some thin cut, skin retaining, well seasoned fries, and they do that and do it well here. In the back of the restaurant is a bar, and further back is a back room for bands, trivia nights, poetry readings, and the like happen. The service is awful as you'd expect from a hipster business. Expect to be ignored for stretches of time as the staff gossips with each other or with friends who are stopping by. The drinks are pretty stiff, however. If you come here, be prepared mentally to have the quality of your service vary depending on how well the staff knows you. read more

I'm not a regular anywhere but if I could afford to be, I may just put in a good many nights at this place. I have to admit that it took a long time before I even stepped foot in this place due to the anti-hipster crowd I slum around with. But screw that shit! I love the vibe. Dirty and colorful at the same time. It screams 1993, Reality Bites and early MTV. I'm in love with the fish tank, the scrawled bathroom walls and the fact that they carry dogfish head (i have yet to see that anywhere else in this town). But I think what I love most about it is how much it reminds me of Chicago. The low lighting, back room bands, frowny bartenders, the slightly hidden scattered trinkets, ironic rat tails, dirt lips, tight acid washed jeans, the plethra of twenty-somethings with dull eyes that roll ever so slightly when I walk in. The food was good but the service was terrible. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner. He got the cheesesteak sandwich, and I got the Pasta-a-la-Oly, both of which were pretty good, although very greasy. If anything, the flavors in my pasta were interesting, different from anything I've had before, but the new flavors didn't make-up for the terrible service. One our food was served, we never saw our waiter again, despite being the only customers in the room. Our waters were never refilled, and once we finished our food, we waited for twenty minutes before finally going up to the bar and asking to pay. Apparently we were supposed to just go up to the register and pay when we were ready, but nobody every told us. Also, they didn't give us an itemized bill, which was kind of sketch. To us, who really value service, the experience was not very good and we don't plan on returning. However, for those who are looking for interesting food at decent prices (10 to 15 dollars per entree) in a place with a cool vibe, Le Voyeur might be alright. CONTEXT: I deal with chronic pain, limited mobility, get around with a walker, and so going out tends to be a Big Deal for me. I know a lot of people think "there are laws" so everything is accessible, but that's not reality and a lot of establishments and individuals act like it's an enormous burden to deal with a patron with a mobility device. I hate feeling like a burden or like I'm in the way so since I started needing the walker several years ago I haven't gone out much for anything not work related. REVIEW: One of my all time favorite musicians, Sammus the Rapper, just started a tour and the only one of her dates I could get to was this last Friday's show at Le Voyeur. I figured since Le Voyeur is also a restaurant there was a pretty good chance it was accessible, so I got some tickets and arranged with a friend to go early so we could have dinner, scope the place out, and hopefully find a reasonable place for me to be during the show. The inside is a little maze like - it goes far back but isn't wide and so it's really like 3 connected rooms one in front of the other so we explored all the way back looking for where the concert would be: bar area, then restaurant seating area + bathrooms, then the performance space at the back. No performers had started yet and there was a group of probably staff at the ticket check podium blocking the entrance. As soon as we rolled up they greeted us and let us know the show hadn't started yet so folks weren't allowed back, but immediately followed up by saying that once the shows did start that if I needed any help getting through the crowd or finding a place to sit or anything else to please let them know and they would make it happen (wow). We thanked them and then went and grabbed a table for dinner. The bartender was also serving tables. He showed up quickly with menus and water, was super friendly, answered questions, brought some really nice whiskey when the specific kind we asked for was out of stock (thanks for the excellent recommends!), was just generally an awesome server+bartender and then as it got later and thus super busy and thus he couldn't just instantly get us whatever we wanted was like super apologetic for it (you were awesome, my dude). The drinks were great, the fries were amazing. Once we were done with dinner, the opening acts had started so we made our way back and at the ticket podium the staff jumped into action moving the podium so my walker could get through and offering to grab me a chair for inside the performance space. I said yes (sitting is easier for me than standing) and then get this: THEY PUT IT RIGHT FRONT AND CENTER OF THE STAGE. I was the front row. FYI - this is not normally how it works. Quite often the only place in a public space where my walker and I will fit is in the back off to one side and I spend a lot of time listening to whatever is happening while looking at people's backs. It was amazing. During the show someone even came to make sure I had a drink! After the show (which was amazing - wow) one of the members of staff (sorry I didn't catch your name and thank you so much) checked in with me to let me know that if I ever want to come back to another show that if I'll give them a heads up they will make sure to do any prep I need so the space is accessible for me. And, y'all, at no point did any of my interactions with the staff make it seem like I was in the way or like they were having to go out of their way to deal with me. I felt truly welcome. Everyone there was super kind and lovely and I will definitely go back. Addendum: the aesthetic of the place is like my dream dive bar - graffiti, weird stuff, but not cluttered or dirty. The bathrooms were not gender patrolled and were accessible and well supplied. There were no steps anywhere, and there was even parking out front. Also, the other patrons were really nice and friendly and I think that speaks to the kind of social environment the owners and staff maintain. read more

Holy canoli this place is awesome!! I was visiting a friend in Olympia, and we were looking for some late night eats, and we ended up at Voyeur. At the suggestion of my hosts I got the tempeh Ruben with fries. I'm a bit of a sandwich snob, and like my ingredients to taste traditional (with the obvious tempeh exception). The sauerkraut was sour, the mustard was spicy and the bread was dark and hearty. I'm a vegetarian, but not generally a big fan of tempeh. But this was marinated and thinly sliced, the perfect no-meat cold cut! They have a big beer list, including some local treats. They also have a venue in the back, and you can hear the music from the seating area. They also broadcast the concert on a (crappy) TV out front. This could be a pro or con, depending on how loud the bands are (it was pretty loud when we went) and weather or not you like the music. I gave only 4 stars because I was there only once and we all had the same meal, so I don't know anything about their (large and somewhat diverse) menu. I stopped by on a road trip from LA to Seattle, and had to stop by again on the way back down! Both times I had the vegan cheesesteak, it was so good I had to get another. Absolutely perfect. I missed the vegan food in the PNW, and was pleased to see that Olympia is just as charming and punk rock as it was when I moved away in 2001. My friend and I stopped by this place on our way diving. They are like a dive bar for vegans. Expect delicious greasy vegan food!! I had a delicious BBQ tofu sandwich that had a nice smoky flavor. Love the decor in the bathroom how every cubic inch is covered in stickers including the ceiling. The bar had an odd assortment of decorations kind of like going into a vintage store there's something to look at everywhere you look. Mind Blowing Good Food! The Voyeur is not just vegan food; the name is a twist on omnivore, carnivore, and herbivore. I hit Le Voyeur to perform and arrived with an empty stomach. That's a no-go before the show. I talked to the cook, Adam, and he made some recommendations. He sold me on the quesadilla, and oh boy, it was no joke. It was near perfect. Crispy tortilla, flavorful black beans, and all the fixings were on point. I am always looking for really great vegan meals when out, and that is tough to do most of the time, but Le Voyeur has some really great options and I look forward to trying some additional menu choices. I absolutely love the Noodle Salad for lunch or really anytime it is fantastic. Our new favorite vegan restaurant! Don't worry omnivores there are meat options too. Everything was cooked perfectly and the different flavors used for their dishes complimented each other completely. The carrot soup is my favorite soup in the area and, in a clam chowder world, that's pretty impressive! The garlic platter was amazing! Didn't get a chance to eat more than a few bites of my side salad. Aside from the general state of uncleanliness, it had a nice vibe and would've liked to spend more time there. After briefly watching the cook handle ready to eat foods without gloves, touch multiple surfaces around the kitchen which were just as dirty as the dining area, and grab the high chair to use as a step stool (no biggie, but he then grabbed it bare handed right where the bottom of his shoes had touched) AND went right back to handling foods...never once did I see him wash his hands. It's small, uninviting, unfriendly, and unclean. Following our first few visits, we have been to Le Voyeur thrice. We have now crossed Le Voyeur off our list and will never be going there again even though I am a huge fan of their Fries. On our last visit, my girlfriend and I sat in the bar section. The place was fairly hopping at about 10pm. We sat down and were served menus and water. We peered through the menus and I decided to get a Sloppy Hippie w/ a side of Fries and my girlfriend settled on the Grilled Cheese with a side of Tomato Basil Soup. After our server took our orders, we waited. And waited and then waited some more. At least 30 minutes had now passed with no sign of our food coming up. I'd like to mention one thing. The restaurant section of the bar was empty but for one table of 4 that had arrived 10 minutes after us. This was sad. It didn't seem like the cook was overworked. I went over twice to the kitchen area to see whether our orders were up. The first time, I was told that it would be about five more minutes. I also asked the cook whether I could get my Sloppy Hippie on a hoagie instead of the bun that it usually comes with. The cook paused for a few seconds and agreed albeit a little reluctantly since I could see that the bun was being warmed up already. So then we waited again. Ten minutes passed and I went over to the kitchen area to see what was up. He said our orders were coming up in a few seconds. Relieved now, I sat down. Our food arrived. That's when the bigger problems began. My Sloppy Hippie was a bit too sloppy, I feel. The top-sirloin was supposed to be seasoned with BBQ sauce. I couldn't taste even a hint of it. I've eaten it before and the taste of the sweet, tangy BBQ sauce is distinct. It was absent this time around. The hoagie it was served in was barely even toasted or warmed up. The bread was so soggy that after my first bite, the entire thing came apart and I was left with bread in my hand and the filling on the plate. Taste-wise, the Sloppy Hippie this time around was undesirable. My girlfriend's grilled cheese too, left a lot to be desired. The bread was almost charred on the outside with the cheese yet to melt on the inside. The Tomato Basil soup was lumpy yet watery and bereft of spices. Grilled Cheese and Progresso Tomato Basil soup is something we eat often at home. I would expect a restaurant to serve up something this basic with a little panache. Not the case here. The fries, of which I have been a huge fan, tasted weird this time around and strangely fishy. I suspected it to be old oil but I couldn't help but get that fish sticks had been fried along with the potatoes in the fryer basket. I know they don't have fish sticks at Le Voyeur but it sure did taste like that. I couldn't eat more than a few of them. We only got through a third of each of our plates when we decided to quit and leave. Getting the cheque was another hassle. I went over to the restaurant section and asked for a cheque and the reply I got was, "I'm really really busy. Can you ask the guy at the bar to ring you up?" So I went to the bar and asked the guy there and his reply was "You're gonna have to wait a bit. I've got customers who need drinks." It was relayed to me in a rude manner and it ticked me off further when I noticed that the bartender was now just chatting with a couple of customers. I wanted to make a comment about how unsatisfied we were with the food was but I saved it because I just wanted to get the hell out of the place. Le Voyeur in my opinion has unfortunately gone downhill since our initial visits. I can't imagine stepping into the place again. The food experience coupled with the unrefined service has left me no choice but to award a single star and never return. Sorry guys but you've lost a customer. read more
