Dr. Christopher Good performed 2 cervical spine surgeries on me and missed a serious, common post-op complication after the first surgery (2014), pseuoarthrosis (lack of fusion), which caused me years of pain and suffering. I am now recovering from major revision cervical spine surgery which was done at the Mayo Clinic earlier the year by a top neurosurgeon due to Dr. Good's negligent and poor care. Dr. Jazini performed lumbar spine surgery on my grandmother about 3 weeks ago due to pinched nerves, bulging discs and scoliosis. My grandmother had been in a LOT of back and leg pain for more than 27 years. Our family lost hope, and we were worried she would suffer with this pain forever, but Dr. Jazini basically helped us get our normal lives back. She's now walking with no pain, going to therapy and sleeping through the night with no pain to wake her up. I cannot express how grateful I am to have found this skilled and empathetic doctor. I visited the clinic after I was given surgery as the next step to manage my pain. Virginia Spine Specialists are overall the best I have experienced! First of all, pain/chronic pain is an embarrassing issue that carries a certain stigma (it is not socially acceptable and I often hide it!), To add, pain disturbs the patient in a biopsychophysical way that causes a mountain of other issues to spiral out of control if left untreated. Dr. Bharara treats the patient in a holistic manner, always assuring comfort as the main goal. . I saw Dr. Shuler for my back. I had been having back pain for several years ever since my car accident in 1997. It took me a couple weeks to get in to see him but since i live down the street I thought it was going to be a good thing. When he examined me, he seemed gruff and overbearing. As he was talking to me, I tried to get a word in edge wise and he kept interrupting me. I began to get mad and I told him he needed to listen to me and not talk so much. He heard me say this, got up and then stormed out of the room. His nurse then finished examining me and told me there was nothing else they could do. That was bad enough. Then several weeks later I got a bill for $430. I still cannot believe it that he charged so much. read more

Amazing PTs and surgeons! My experience with VSI changed my life! I went from not being able to walk without significant pain to being back to running and training for half marathons in a few short months. When I started with VSI, I was I having significant back pain. Between PT, Larry Grine and surgeon Dr Haines, I was able to resume my normal routines and half marathon training with no pain at all. They listened to my concerns, were patient and very knowledgeable and explained what the issues were, as well as the different treatment options and possible outcomes. One of the best parts of this office is the fact that the PT and surgeons work together and communicate regarding the patients treatment. The whole process went smoothly from beginning to end. My son is a high school athlete and we have seen Larry many times for therapy. He works so well with my son, providing insight, sharing knowledge, and providing treatments as well as at home exercises to assist with healing. I highly recommend this office and we will be definitely be loyal patients for the foreseeable future! read more

Run as fast and as far away from these guys as you can. It's ONLY about the money here, and patient care be damned. They don't participate in any major health insurance plans, and as a result they feel free to overcharge for services that one could receive quite competently from in-network providers. And it feels like you're under threat of mob-style execution if you don't give in to their extortion before you leave their office. It gets worse if you are duped into having surgery. They prescribe expensive, duplicate, and unneccessary procedures that were proven to fail in the past before they will even consider offering a needed surgical option (insurance requires us to do this, don't you know). And if you fail to pay an outrageous co-pay up front (many thousands of dollars) even when a surgery date is not set, they will threaten cancellation and scheduling until you pay in full. They will definitely make you an offer you can't refuse. Virginia Spine Institute has banners and signs all over the place screaming about how they are the official spinal surgeons for the Washington Redskins. Given that team's record, I'm not sure that's a bragging point. The bottom line: Their arrogance and focus on money over patient care is over-the-top and outrageous. Shame on them! read more

Never in my life Have I ever felt at peace in a doctor's Office as I do at Virginia spine institute doctor Haines and his staff are just totally awesome they go above and beyond their Call of Duty just to make sure That their patients are taking care of . I was born with Scoliosis, and had a very large curve prior to my 1st and 2nd surgeries in the 90's. In the past 10 years , things have worsened to the point that I can barely walk at times, and sleeping is impossible now. I have been referred to this practice by many people who have had success with Dr. Good. I have to say They have a very Pleasant staff, and Dr. Good has been great to work with . It is Fairly easy to get in for appts, however it is very expensive to go to weekly visits where the copay is around 200$ each time . They recommend going weekly for follow ups in order to have necessary medication refills, which I feel is quite excessive. I am pleased so far with the practice, including the techs, PA's and pain management doc Dr. Bhahara who did my Nerve test. It is an uncomfortable test, but he made me feel as if he truly cared about my feelings, as I am very afraid of needles and have anxiety when I know I will be having injections and such. Please consider coming to this practice if you are in need of spinal care. They are all wonderful and will find out a good option that is right for you ! It looks like I will possibly be having surgery here in the near future, so I will keep everyone updated :-) read more

I strongly advise anyone to NOT seek help from Dr. Schuler. He seemed like a sweet, compassionate doctor at first, but I quickly changed my mind. He told me I​ was the "perfect candidate" for ​stem cells injection to help my painful lower back (20 years of pain). I not only wasted $8000 out of desperation, but the procedure to retrieve the stem cells was very painful. Dr. Schuler had told me that I​ would be under partial anesthesia, but that the procedure would be bearable. It was NOT, and Dr. Schuler was extremely rude with me, walked in without acknowledging​ me, ordering me to not move, clearly loosing his temper during the procedure and had the nerve to complain that I​ was 'the worst case" he had ever​ seen! I had multiple injections in my spine before that procedure (probably a dozen), epidurals, that I tolerated very well. To this day I still feel the stinging embarrassment this heartless individual put me through. Dr.Schuler should not be a doctor if he cannot feel empathy for his patients. Worst experience I have ever had with a doctor. I switched to Dr. Good, whose bedside manners were far better, but I stopped scheduling​ further appointments with VSI ... I never got the sense that they knew what was wrong with me. Absolutely pathetic care. read more

I visited the VSI a number of years ago for a consultation with the founder, Dr. Schuler. Within two minutes of seeing my MRI etc., he proposed a spinal fusion from both the front AND back using complicated hardware. When I replied that I needed to consider the procedure, he became angry and abusive. His arrogance and the experience were most distasteful, so I never returned. Ultimately, I found a surgeon that was not trying to intimidate me, gave me time to evaluate the procedure, and the fusion went well. This Dr. saw no need to enter from two directions (thereby padding the bill). He just inserted a cage from the back, that he packed with excavated bone from the discs. (L3-L4) STEER CLEAR of this outfit or, as a minimum, obtain a second opinion. read more

J Virginia Spine Institute. As a result of the operation, I have severe pain, I can no longer work or live a life without chronic pain. Since the operation I have been given narcotics ( oxycodone) for the intense daily pain. I am now on disability for chronic back pain and under the supervision of a pain management doctor. My life is miserable with the daily pain and the inability to make a living to support my wife and dependent child. The doctor at VSI thought my pain was due to the hardware in my back however after another operation in November of 09 he removed the hardware but it did nothing to alleviate the pain. I was informed by dr Cohen at John Hopkins hospital that VSI did not do the proper test ( discography ) to determine the origin of the pain before he operated on my back. If I had known this I would have had the test. read more

Very disappointment with Dr Shuller service and his clinic over all. After having 2 surgeries at the end of January 2016 - a fusion and a laminectomy at his recommendation due to disc bulging at L5-S1 and severe sciatica, the outcome after surgery was worse than before. I literally was home and bed bound for almost 2 months (the opposite to the nice promise that in 4-6 weeks I will be back to work). I was on opioids for more than 2 months due to severe pain. It is 6 months now after the surgery and I'm still having the same leg symptoms I had prior to surgery and what have I got? a 200,000 hospital bill and worse suffering. Now he recommended a spinal injection after surgery !!! which did nothing for me. His staff and billing department also gave wrong information that my insurance will cover the injection (which they didn't) and here I am a again with another high bill.... thanks to an injection done by a PA which did nothing for me. A MONEY MAKING BUSINESS THAT'S ALL. Run away... do your search, see several surgeons before jumping to such decision. read more

My experience with the Virginia Spine Institute several years ago was occasioned by severe lower back pain which, on reflection, was probably caused by stress during the time that my elderly mother was in her final days. The Dr's. and PA's recommended surgery to relieve pressure they diagnosed from herniated spinal discs (a condition which, I understand, exists in most people over 50) One PA even told me that I should have at least exploratory surgery since "it could be cancer." Fortunately, I chose physical therapy. After a month or so the pain disappeared and I have been completely pain free since then. I am acquainted with several people who have had problems following surgery at the VSI. While I am sure that the surgeons there must be highly qualified, my personal experience leads me to suggest that one should exercise extreme caution before submitting to expensive and intrusive surgery and try physical therapy, message, yoga, plenty of time, and any other means before being rushed into risky surgery. read more

This review is not for a specific doctor but for the actual practice and my experience with them this morning when trying to make an appointment for my mother. My mother has a bulging disc in her neck and is suffering from some significant symptoms. I did an internet search for the best spinal doctor in the Northern VA area and came up with Dr. Schuler. I read all about how he is so well known, is the doctor for the Redskins, published papers, etc, etc, etc. I called to inquire about how long the wait would be to see Dr. Schuler. The next question from the customer care gal was "Is your mother over 65?" Puzzled, I replied "Yes, why?" She said that because of that, my mother would not be able to see Dr. Schuler but would need to see Dr. Hasz. Again, I asked why and she said because Dr. Schuler has "thousands and thousands of patients and Dr. Hasz was their doctor for Medicare patients." I was annoyed because I feel like my mother deserves to have the same level of care at 67 that a 65 year old is entitled to but never-the-less, I asked what Dr. Hasz's earliest appt was. I was told April. What? Today is Jan. 18th and they don't have any appointments available until April??? Obviously, I declined making an appt since my mother needs to be evaluated sooner than 3 months from today. I shared my frustration with the customer care gal before hanging up. I was very disappointed in the outcome of my phone call to Virginia Spine Institute. I guess this just goes to show how much medical practices have become more about making money (i.e., what insurance you have determines who you get to see and how soon you get to see them) than about compassionate care for a patient in need, no matter what their age. In closing, if the VSI has so many medicare patients for Dr. Hasz to see that his first available appointment is 3 months out, then maybe they should consider hiring another specialist to handle the medicare patient load. Seriously, my parents have paid into Medicare their entire lives and they can't get into see a top-rated specialist because their "insurance" isn't good enough...even though they also have supplemental insurance in addition to Medicare. I'm sure that VSI is a great practice with great doctors if you are young and have insurance other than Medicare but if you are of Medicare age, don't bother calling them unless you can wait 2-3 months to see a doctor. I had 2 discs in my neck (C5 & C6) that were fused during surgery as a result of a car accident that was performed by VSI. I have nerve damage in my left shoulder and had been experiencing numbness and tingling and loss of strength before my surgery and I am pleased to report that my pain has dropped from about a 7 or 8 to a 1. The VSI also provided me with physical therapy which I did a lot of for 3 months after surgery. I am very happy with VSI through out this whole process, which involved several steps before we opted for surgery. read more

I was recently diagnosed with a ruptured disc. I went to see Dr. Goode for a second opinion. They were not covered by my insurance and it was pretty pricey. ($250) However, after seeing three different spinal surgeons (all with similar advice) I can say that I had the most thorough evaluation at vsi. Dr. Goode's PA did a number of tests and Dr. Goode spent a fair amount of time with me. They also were very professional and had a lot of knowledge around dealing with my insurance company. I ended up using a highly regarded in network doctor for treatment but I feel like the information I got from my visit was worth the cost out of my pocket. Dr. Goode did recommend surgery but was willing to try conservative alternatives and clearly explained the risks associated with delaying as well as having the surgery. If money had been no object I would have continued to see Dr. Goode. read more

The two doctors I receive treatment from are providing me high quality conservative care that keeps me mobile and surgery free. I recommend the VSI whether you are a pro football player or an office worker. read more

Confused. Just called to try to get an appt for my mother and was told they do not take Medicare patients. Not Medicaid, but Medicare. My mother has ver good supplemental insurance but that did not matter. The scheduler said the government will not permit it. C'mon now. So I inquired whether it had to do with age, since Medicare is a benefit to any qualified person over 65. She said no. The scheduler was of very little help and short of patience, as I was genuinely confused. Hung up feeling insulted. Now that I've read other reviews from folks who were treated and not so satisfied, I will count it a blessing in disguise. read more

I am one year out from cervical and lumbar surgery by Dr. Good. VSI and Dr. Good were top notch. Their assessment and examinations were thorough. They always responded to my questions, including those posted through the portal (unlike other doctors I see). I spent 25+ years with back pain that was getting progressively worse, resulting in me being unable to stand on my feet for more than 5 minutes without legs and feet going numb. I have never felt better after the surgeries performed by Dr. Good and am grateful to have an active life again. I received a second opinion from an in-network doctor (not a part of VSI), who did not examine me very thoroughly and acted like I was wasting his time. I was tired of doctors dismissing my back pain for years and years! It was like a breath of fresh air with VSI. I can't say enough good things about the treatment I received from Dr. Good and the VSI staff and would recommend them to anyone. read more

I feel bad for the people in the reviews below who had a bad experience. After 8 months of spine pain and two recommendations for fusion surgery with metal plates, I went to VSI. After meeting with a nurse and having XRays, the PA (Thao) came in and asked many questions and gave me an exam. They were the first group to show me the MRI and explained it in detail. They did the same with the XRay. It was so cool to see that and have it explained! Dr. Schuler came in and reviewed the materials again and gave me several options. I opted for the surgery he recommended that was less invasive and would include metal that would eventually come out. He visited me in the hospital the day after surgery. My follow up appointment went very well and they showed me the new XRays. A plan was laid out for therapy and my eventual return to a normal, healthy life. I was ALWAYS made to feel comfortable and have loved working with them. It is expensive because it is out of network but I always knew exactly what I would have to pay. I chose them because of the time they took, my comfort level with them, and the transparency of the visits. It was worth the extra cost! They were recommended to me by my friends husband who is a doctor and that was good enough for me. Then when I met them it clinched my decision. Highly recommended!! I am sorry for the other bad reviews but I have never seen that from any of the staff. I regularly joked with the receptionists on my visits and enjoyed chatting with them! read more

Terrible practice from many aspects. Dr. Schuler will not remember you when you have follow up appointments. This practice essentially goes against the oath all MDs take after receiving their license. They are not in it to help the patient, it is a money making business. They have you go through a series of physical therapy and pain management with injections, etc (normal prior to any surgery; but not normally this expensive.) They are private therefore they do not accept insurance. Each visit is 100-200$. The balance grows with every visit and it is very disorganized and unclear where your money is going. Then a month or so later after everything is processed you owe 2000+ dollars. Then they tell you you need surgery. I have paid nearly 9000$ and this does not include my injections from October which have not processed yet. My last visit with Dr Schuler he re-introduced himself and asked me the questions what did I do where does it hurt etc from the very first visit. They love to cut and love to take your money. I will never let them touch my spine. They have made it worse, if anything, with injections I more than likely didn't need. Go to a real MD. I will be going to Mayo clinic to see real spine specialists. I have heard wonderful things about Dr Patel with commonwealth orthopedics as well. read more

I had a very unsatisfactory experience at the Virginia Spine Institute. I have been experiencing so back pain recently, and I was hoping to get a diagnosis as well as an exercise routine to correct the condition. After being X-rayed and prepped by very sympathetic staff, Dr. Schuler walks in and, before were even introduced, asks me if I'm the guy who's falling forward. I was confused, and only later realized he was referring to a spinal curve issue I didn't know I had. Then he introduces himself, we spend four or five minutes discussing my situation, and he gets a phone call, apparently a family crisis. He then quickly leaves. I can understand sometimes things happen that must be dealt with right away, but I still had questions regarding my back. Dr. Schuler should have suggested I come back to complete the consultation. So to be brief, Dr. Schuler greets me with a glib insult to start our consultation, then quickly bails out before addressing my complete situation. And I'm $835. poorer. I would not recommend the Virginia Spine Institute to anyone. read more
