(Chicago) Located in the Farmington Exchange building, Sunrise took over the space previously occupied by the Hans and Fritz Deli. They've only been open a few months. Their hours are limited to 8-3 during the five weekdays, and they have a pretty deep and decidedly reasonably priced breakfast and lunch menu with eggs, omelets, French toast, pancakes, crepes, breakfast sandwiches, burgers, dogs, and deli sandwiches. But there's an unexpected twist to their menu - Polish foods like pierogi, golabki (stuffed cabbage), potato pancakes, kielbasa, and hunter's stew. Everything is made from scratch at the time of your order, so don't expect a cafeteria line of pre-wrapped BEC sandwiches, a mound of home fries getting hard and crusty on the flat top, or a "Grab and Go" experience, because your food will take an appropriate time to cook. It's a family-owned brother and sister business, and the young lady that waited on us and cooked our food was wonderful -very engaging and sociable with great customer experience skills and a skilled touch in the kitchen. We ordered a vegetable omelet, a side of kielbasa, a Ham, Egg and Cheese sandwich, and two coffees. We ate at one of the many small tables in the center courtyard. We also bought an order of potato pancakes to go. You order and pay at the counter and pick up your food at the same counter after it gets cooked. My omelet was very good -three eggs with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and tomatoes served with home fries and toast. What impressed me was the large amount of sauteed veggies in there. The side of kielbasa was split down the middle and then cross-hatched, so it had plenty of grilled edges. We expected the potato pancakes to take a while, and we were right, they were finished cooking while we were halfway through our breakfast. As I said, they were cooked from scratch, so the potatoes and onions first had to be shredded to start our order. We'll have them for dinner tonight, and frankly I can't wait. The order was three humongous patties fried to a golden brown served with containers of applesauce and sour cream. I'm begging anyone in the area to get out to Farmington before 3:00 on Monday to Friday and support these hard-working folks. Your food and your overall experience will be five stars too.

It took me a bit of circling to find where it is. Once I found it, it is to the left of a hair salon. The space inside is super clean and fresh, you can tell it's brand new. They also have an outdoor patio, it's like a little garden, which I would imagine is why they're called the Sunrise Cafe. They have some breakfast options, some salads and some wraps. There's also some Polish specialties. The owner might be Polish. I noticed the prices were very reasonable. I wanted to get the avocado toast, it was priced at just $3.50. This is usually $8 - $10 everywhere else. The lady apologized and informed me they haven't received their avocado shipment. I got the BLT wrap instead. This was $6.50. I also got a small coffee for $2.00. Here you're not going to find your specialty coffee. This is just your basic hot coffee, in small or large. They did have a few options of flavored coffee creamer pods. Since they have just opened, I think they're going to expand their coffee menu with time. After around 10 minutes my BLT was ready. There was mayo, a substantial amount of freshly cooked bacon and lettuce. The tomato was chopped, I would prefer it if it was sliced. This was a very filling lunch. My coffee was strong and hot. I was very pleased by this cute little spot for lunch! The people working here are super friendly. I hope they stick around at the Exchange for a while to come.

I ordered two poached eggs, bacon, and home fries. The bacon was fine, a little chewy but some people like that. The home fries, again, fine. But, the eggs we cold and disgusting. Poached eggs, by their very nature, are cooked uniformly. Unlike fried eggs, they are submerged in water and cooked all the way around. These eggs came back with uncooked whites that resembled mucus. I'm sure the eggs were sitting there, waiting on the other orders to be fulfilled. Not wanting to be a hassle, I plowed through, scooping the cold uncooked whites to the side and discovered a piece of not so small egg shell in it. I told the waitress there was an egg shell in the eggs, they were a bit undercooked and cold. Instead of receiving an apology or accommodations, she said she'll share the info with the owner. I was then given an excuse as to why there was an egg shell in the eggs "we use farm fresh eggs and they're very fragile". I use farm fresh eggs at home, they are fragile. It doesn't take more than a moment to remove the shell before cooking and serving it to a customer. She didn't remove the meal from the ticket or discount it and she never apologized. Like I said, just an excuse. All that being said, the place is beautiful, indoors and outside. My wife's pancake was delicious. I'm sure many things on the menu are delicious. They also seemed short staffed. And I won't wright a place off because of one meal and one server. Could be an off day for the chef/cook. The server isn't a always an indicator of the restaurant's values. I do wish she was more accommodating - especially at those prices - but it could've been a perfect storm of being short staffed, rushed cook, and a server that doesn't care.

I ordered the Milanese Pork Chop with Arugula. It also came with grilled lemon. The Pork Chop was beautifully cooked and had great flavor. The Pork Chop was crispy and not overcooked. The grilled Lemon brought the Pork Chop to another level. The grilled lemon gave the pork chops a nice pop and brought more flavor out of the pork chops. The Argula was cooked to perfection. It tasted great, and you could tell that the grilled Lemon was squeezed into the Argula while it was cooking. The food was fabulous. The customer service was too notch, and I will be back again.

In addition, it's unlike any restaurant I've ever been to. My first visit to Gather55 wasn't my first visit to the building, because back in the early '90's I was here during its Spaghetti Warehouse and Trout Brook Brewery days. Gather55 is so unusual because of its innovative and visionary business model. For breakfast and lunch, it opens the doors to the underprivileges or those struggling within the community for "pay what you can" meals. Those that have zero dollars are assigned a task in the restaurant and working for a half hour or so will earn you a meal. In the evening, the white tablecloths come out and Gather55 becomes a high-end restaurant with weekly guest chefs, and the revenue raised from these pricey dinners subsidizes the breakfasts and lunches. We started off with a few glasses of wine for around $10 a glass. The menu suggested pairings to go along with the evening's five appetizers and four entrees. The dishes were all created by different chefs including some heavy hitting familiar names like Chef Billy Grant and Chef Tyler Anderson. The appetizers were priced between $14-$18, the entrees between $28-$32, and the desserts were all $11. They also offer a 3 Course Prix Fixe Menu for $55 with your choice of salad or appetizer, entree, and dessert. Our appetizers were: Tom Yum Noodles $15 with chili paste, coconut milk, bok choy, bean sprout, Chinese cabbage, peanut, scallion, and lime Crispy Yucca Rellenos $14 (Vegetarian) Chef Jeremy Williams yucca, herbed cheese, aji verde sauce Kale Caesar Salad $14 with parmesan, lemon, and crispy garbanzos. Two of us went with the Tom Yum Noodles, including yours truly. It was a dish by this month's Guest Chef Lapat Watrous of Aroy Thai Garden in Middletown, and she created a helluva delicious starter. It was an amazing combination of tastes, textures and an amazing sauce that reminded me a lot of Panang Curry. Our main courses were: Salmon en Papillote $32 (GF) with potatoes, leeks, fresh herbs, cooked in parchment paper Stuffed Eggplant & Kale $28 with vadouvan, beans, tomato agrodulce, and fregola Pork Chop Milanese $29 with arugula, parmesan, lemon beurre blanc Lobster Ravioli ($18 from the appetizer menu) with tarragon mascarpone cream, and roasted hazelnuts. I had the eggplant dish and had to scurry to my phone to find out what some of the exotic ingredients were. I learned that vadouvan is a French spice blend, tomato agrodolce is an Italian sweet and sour sauce, and fregola is a teeny tiny pasta very similar to couscous. It was the creation of Chef Tim East of West Hartford's Union Kitchen, and it was delicious. The presentation was gorgeous, rollatini style spirals of eggplant topped with bits of kale, topped with the pasta and beans all swimming in a bed of fantastic tomato sauce. We had coffees and split two desserts - Chef Tyler Anderson's Brown Sugar Budino (an egg custard) with brown sugar, maple, and cocoa nibs, and Chef Kristin Eddy's Flourless Chocolate Torte with bourbon, orange, crème fraiche, and black pepper. I had a forkful of each, and they were both fantastic. You really have to tip your hat to Rob Maffucci and his talented group of collaborators for putting together such an innovative effort to serve the community and offer a wonderful dining experience.
