If you are in downtown Hartford, this is a decent option for lunch or breakfast. Cafe is inside Hartford Steam Boiler building. There is not indication or display of this cafe anywhere. I liked the shrimp and tomato paella the most followed by chicken pinchos salsa roja. Po'boy shrimp was good. Shrimp was breaded and deep fried. Eggplant parmesan, baked ziti and toasted potato and chorizo were good as well. I am not a quinoa person. So didn't like the quinoa salad that much. There was a pasta station, which I didn't visit. For drinks there was lemonade and cucumber and lemon infused water. I went for the infused water thinking that was kind of cucumber lemonade. I was wrong. Infused water is just cucumber and lemon put in the water for a long time so that water will absorb the flavor and vitamins. No sugar or sweetner was added. I didn't like it that much. If you are into infused waters, you may like it. read more

I work in this building so I come here between 1-4 times a week for breakfast and lunch. For the most part I think the food is tasty but...and I'm not sure if this is popular opinion, I preferred it prior to the remodel. Pros: It's a really nice modern cafeteria. Right on trend with wood plank walls and big screen TVs in the seating/dining area. Speaking of which there are a lot of nice seating options including high top tables, booths, and of course the regular 4 tops. I think I've only been once and there was no seating so if you come with a group I think your safe. The employees, seriously they're all really nice! I don't think I've ever had one bad interaction with anyone in the 2 years I've been coming. Cons The hours. This place closes at 9:30 for breakfast. I think that's pretty early. Some people don't arrive to work until after 9 so this really isn't an option for late starters. The prices. I know they had to pay for the upgrades but me and my coworkers agree that the prices have gone up at least 20-25% since the remodel. Although I suppose if you've never come to this place prior that won't matter. The food- At first, there seems to be a ton of variety including a salad bar, sandwich station, grill, soup station, comfort food station and the daily global station. There's also a chef station on Thursday that's generally really good but also dumb pricey (think 12.95 for a salad). I'd say the food is generally hit or miss. I've had some delicious stuff here (shrimp salad) and some blah stuff here (the Spanish and Jamaican foods come to mind). My go to is the grill cheese, but no points for that bec it's hard to ruin a grill cheese. Also...I kinda want them to serve pizza on a daily basis. But...if you come often you'll notice that a lot of the food is repeated. For example, salad bar is pretty much always salad. Comfort food usually consists of sweet potatoes, or mashed potatoes etc. Same with the sandwiches. Maybe I come here too often and I'm not appreciative enough. It's worth checking out for sure though. Here's a tip, check out the menu before coming. It's released weekly! read more

One of the best options for quick, convenient and tasty lunch in downtown Hartford. This is the company cafeteria for the Hartford Steam Boiler Company building but is open to the public. Considerable options for pay-by-weight and a grill that offers burgers and sandwiches. Most of the food is pretty good but not life-changing. I gave it four stars for the tremendous value. You can be seated and eating a decent meal five minutes after arriving. You pay cafeteria style so there's no table service, no tipping, and especially no frantically trying to get the check in time to make your 1 o'clock meeting. Watch out for Chef's Table on Thursdays. One of the chef's will prepare and plate to order. It gives the chefs a chance to show their skill and is higher end and more complex than the daily grub. The chefs obviously take a great deal of pride in preparation and presentation. Pricier than the rest of the cafe, generally in the $12-15 range, but well worth it. Good gets even better. I still can't bring myself to give five stars to essentially a cafeteria, but if ever there was one, this would be it. It's worth the trip if you're in Hartford. It is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. The salad bar? Excellent. Grill? Easy and fresh and lots of options. And then specials like Japanese Ramen, or Pub Food. It goes on and on. Reasonable prices. The "Steamboiler cafe" (as we call it) has recently reopened after being closed for about 5 months for renovations and it is gorgeous! There are huge windows letting in light and offering views of... ok, well, the views aren't the best (empty lots and a closed building) but it's nice to have so much light! The stations seem to always have long lines with made-to-order pasta, sandwiches, and daily specials that always spotlight different cultures and types of food. It's definitely a creative spot for lunch as you do not have this variety offered anywhere else. The also newly renovated seating area has small tables, big tables, hightops... just about everything. I didn't realize this was open to the public until a friend of mine took me over for a visit. It's a corporate style cafeteria with different stations to pick from (sandwiches, cooked items, salads). The view from the dining room is pretty nice, windows on three sides that look out over Hartford. Not bad prices and I'll probably be back soon. read more

A great choice for a quick lunch when you're in the downtown area. They have a salad station, pizza station and sandwich station, with fault sand the service is fast and friendly. This place is great for a corporate cafeteria, regarding price and quality. You have to be in the know, as there is no other way you would ever stumble upon this cafeteria in the Hartford Steam Boiler building. They have a different "international" cuisine featured daily and a weekly rotating "action station." The choices are extensive, from cold salad bar to creative hot vegetable sides and mains; basic cold and hot sandwiches to interesting Indian, Chinese, Mexican foods. The online menu is always up to date so you can see what they are offering. This is one of the few places we can go with extremely picky coworkers and everyone is happy. You know the type, they eat like a 5 year old and only like burgers and chicken tenders...they will be happy. The foodie in your group will be happy. The vegetarian in your group will rejoice at having multiple options. They also do breakfast and an omelet station on Friday mornings, though I have only ever had their lunch. read more

This is a corporate cafeteria, NOT a cafe. If you know that ahead of time and are OK with that, great. But if you get off the highway expecting to find this 'café' on State St you will be frustrated and disappointed. When we got there at 10 am looking for breakfast they were setting up for lunch so we were limited to a few leftovers plus some nice looking baskets of fruit and a selection of breads and bagels ready to toast. To be fair, the food we were offered was pretty good. It was just that the selection was limited and the dining area was dominated by large screen TV's set to ESPN. read more
