This is one random little hole in the wall (literally) tucked down a busy Melbourne laneway that you do not want to miss out on. I was staying in Melbourne across the road and nothing sounded better than a quick waffle for breakfast. My boyfriend and I ordered and within minutes were presented with waffles in little throw away containers and sat down on the un-sturdy stools provided. Hidden in one of the narrow lanes in Melbourne, I found this counter that specialises in French baguette sandwiches and Belgian waffles. I ordered a Le Lyonnais baguette sandwich and it was excellent. The cheese, the flavour of the pickle, the salami combined with the somewhat strong flavour of the mustard, made this a very tasty sandwich. The slight crunch and the texture of the baguette was excellent, making it one of the best baguettes I ever had and it was fairly fresh and definitely not stale. I also got a waffle with nutella on it, and it was excellent. Great sweet flavour, and the texture was just right, not overly crispy, but also not overly soft. Both of these should be more than enough to get the stomach of a grown man full. This place is at an excellent location, near the Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, the Yarra River, and Hosier Lane. I had a conversation with the owner, and he told me some fascinating stories during his quirky trip to the States, and that he used to be a "Resident Alien" over there by showing his card. He seemed to be fairly friendly and also mentioned that he was also from France. Overall, I thought I had one of the tastiest lunches in Melbourne from eating an excellent French baguette sandwich and a tasty Belgian waffle. We decided to visit Waffle On for a sweet treat whilst we were in the CBD. It is in a very convenient location on Degraves St, right near an entrance to Flinders Street station. We got one waffle with jam and the other with Nutella, as we were on the go. We thought the pricing at $5.00 was fairly reasonably in comparison to other competitors. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the service was pretty fast. The waffles were warm and extremely tasty. There was a very generous amount of both Nutella and jam, which was a positive. They were also a decent size, so they really hit the spot! Overall, we were very satisfied with the quality of the waffles, and look forward to going back for more in the future to fulfil our sweet tooth cravings. Check them out! read more

A fantastic little waffle and baguette shop in Degraves Lane, off Flinders Street. The waffles are lovely and quite affordable too (about $4 from memory). But I mostly come for the baguettes. There are about 7 filling options and most of these are around $10. You can add a bottle of water for an extra $2. I have tried a few although I really like the Parisian which is simply ham, cheese, mustard and pickles. The salami and beef ones are nice too. I'm yet to try the others. The baguettes are simple in their flavours and not overstuffed with filling. The bread speaks for itself, crunchy on the outside and soft and delicate inside. Waffle On! read more

??? How have i missed this one? I'm pretty sure the first time I went here was 8,9, even longer than that years ago. Fascinated by removed American Culture; that is to say TV shows and such, I always wondered what actually constituted a real waffle. No, not a Waffle ice cream cone, but a real waffle. NO, not the ones you put in the toaster either. What are they, what do they look like, what's the taste? Etc etc. Well that wonderment was put to rest a long time ago, and I was satisfied with the results. The place itself, waffle on may look in ram-shackles, but the results of the waffles and possible choices you can make are very good indeed. Plain waffles for $4 are super tasty and great, and you can indulge in other options too. Cant remember doing so for a while though, why mess with a good thing. Made with beet sugar and mystery, Waffle on still leads as Melbourne's waffle pioneer. Even after all these years waffles haven't really taken off as a food trend. Why waffles haven't taken off here as a breakfast staple I'll never know. It's like pancakes but toasty! The reputation of this place proceeds it. I had never been here before but when a pregnant friend declared her craving for waffles, I knew there was one place in Melbourne we had to try. There's no seating here. This is a little hole in the wall waffle stand, manned by a French man who is clearly passionate about his product. Rightly so, his waffles are the perfect amount of both fluffy and crunchy. We both ordered the thick, sticky heavy maple syrup which made them taste almost candied. Perched on the small bar we happily devoured them and were accused of taking a sneaky lick of the plate. We didn't, but it probably crossed both our minds. Situated in Degraves, we promptly found a chair to sit and while away another hour over a coffee and wishing we didn't have to go to work. Degraves Street is always overly packed with people wanting to get a slice of the 'cool street café' action. Frankly, sometimes I can't be bothered fighting the crowds especially when I know at the end of this street there's an even cooler whole-in-the-wall that can stuff me full of creative, French baguettes, and waffles. The saving grace that keeps you from lashing out and screaming at everyone is the smell of sugar and batter and honey and cinnamon and more coming from just across from you. Salvation! Seemingly short lived, the smells do not match the look of the place. The dingy nature of the establishment matches the stairs you just walked up. Do not ignore your initial reaction, the smell is a good indicator of things to come. Waffles are a magical treat that most of us don't want to know how to make. We just want it now and we want it tasty on our tongues and in our belly. And the best known for making waffles are the French (I think, maybe the Belgians). The owner, while not the nicest of people I've ever met, knows his product and you walk away not liking him but loving what he does. Man, this place is dingy. You know those awful takeaway places you find at train stations, where the coffee is going to struggle to beat a weak cup of Nescafe on quality? I'm shuddering at the thought. This waffle joint is sitting at the Degraves entrance to Flinders St station, so it's got a terrible stigma to beat. It's ugly and cheap looking, and surrounded by tiny lanes where god-knows-what goes on in the wee hours. But you know what? Damn good waffles, and the baguettes... As the place that I normally get my best baguette in town has changed owners I am now on the search again. I must say that Waffle On do have a good baguette but just because the owners are French does not mean that they have the best baguette in town. I was not disappointed by the fillings in no way at all as they were spot on, however the baguette itself was lacking in flavour and chewiness. A good baguette but not the best in town. Marc's Belgium waffles first drew me to Waffle On - tucked in above the steps leading to the Degraves Street Underpass, but his wonderful baguettes keep me coming back. The queue is HUGE at lunchtime for good reason. The bread is from Noisette and Marc finishes the baking on site. He cooks his rare roast lamb on site as well, and his Brie is french, creamy and heavenly smothered on a loaf with decent ham and French Cornichons. And the waffles! I eat mine just with a sprinkling of icing sugar. They are made to a Belgium recipe with pearl sugar, yeast, flour and butter. Layers of delicious, buttery goodness. I used to work at Max Brenner. I would tell all my friends to go to Waffle on for the best Belgium waffle in Melbourne. However, today I went to the stall and gave the owner $4 dollars for the plain waffle and expecting a $1 change, without knowing that the price had gone up. The owner THREW THE MONEY BACK AT ME and told me he wasn't going to sell me waffles. He started raging about how Max Brenner sells theirs for $5.5 and it's right for him to sell it for $4. I told him I didn't know the price went up and I agree it was worth $4. He started threatening me 'Do you want the waffle? If you want it's $4' and went on and on. I said yes. I got my waffle and he was still raging about it. I walked away and then a couple of blocks down I realize I couldn't eat this waffle. Food made of love makes ppl happy. Food made of hatred makes ppl sad. I went back and returned the waffle. HE THREW THE WAFFLE BACK AT ME!!! I don't think I will ever recommend anyone to go to this stall anymore. So after fighting your way down Degraves street you get to this kinda scummy subway entrance to Flinders Street station, which itself is worthy of attention due to all the subterranean cool stuff housed therein, but I digress. There are many waffle places and many baguette places in the vicinity, and one could argue over price vs quality, but let's not. I am not a huge fan of waffles but these ones seem pretty authentic and you can get one with nutella, so what more is there to say?
