After leaving Texas a few years ago, my wife and I are constantly on the lookout for Waffle House or Waffle House-like breakfast spots. It's not always easy to find in parts of the US (particularly in the Midwest, where we live). We spent a couple days staying in downtown Pittsburgh while checking out the city, and we were pleasantly surprised to discover Waffles INCaffeinated a short walk from our hotel. It's approximately the breakfast experience we were looking for and 1) the food was quite good; 2) it was lively but not crowded; and 3) they were open for breakfast and brunch on Thanksgiving, which was highly appreciated. Be aware in advance that food preparation is _slow _. After reading some of the other reviews, along with the restaurant's "We don't own a microwave. We prepare fresh," sign, I consider that to be a feature (and, as such, didn't subtract a star). That said, set aside some time for your wait + meal. Overall we really enjoyed this place. We spent our weekend in Pittsburgh, and as tourists, this place seemed like a must try. The wait for a table on a Saturday morning was only 10-20 minutes. Once seated, we were greeted quickly and served our drinks. Afterwards, it took awhile for our waitress to come back for our food orders. We had also finished our drinks and needed refills. Our waitress was apologetic and took our orders. I ordered the bananas foster waffles and my boyfriend ordered an egg, bacon, and the chicken and waffles, specifically requesting the order to have a plain waffle with NO nuts. We waited for about 20 minutes before the waitress came back to check on us, gave us another drink refill, and apologized again for the delay. The kitchen opens up to the dining room, so we could hear that they were backed up and tried to be understanding. Nearly another 30 minutes after that, we were served our meals. Almost an hour wait for our food was not ideal, but the most upsetting part was that my boyfriend's waffle was riddled with pecans inside and out. He was not able to simply pick out the nuts. I am SO thankful that he doesn't have a nut allergy, he just doesn't like them. Unfortunately, he had to choose not to eat his waffle. Because we had already spent over an hour and a half total there and had a wedding to get ready for, we didn't have the time to wait for a new order. Instead he was left with a few bites of chicken, one egg and side of bacon. My order was very tasty but very slightly burnt. Also, the maple syrup was extremely runny, like soy sauce. Overall, the food we ate was good and our waitress was very kind. We are very understanding it's easy for the kitchen to get backed up, but it really was quite a long wait for breakfast food. I took my best friend for a pre theater breakfast here thinking on a Saturday I would have no trouble getting in. Was I wrong! We had a 15 minute wait. If you don't get on the waitlist then they will take your name and mobile number to text you when your table is ready. The place is decked out in orange paint and a changing computerized sign indicates that nothing here is microwaved but made from scratch. We finally got seated within our scheduled timeframe and got our menus as well as the specials of the day. I decided to go with their peach, walnut and blueberry crepes which I understood was a limited edition and scheduled to be taken off the menu soon. My girlfriend decided upon just half of a regular waffle with syrup. While they do have both gluten free and vegan choices, she was disappointed that they don't offer whole wheat waffles. Nevertheless, she was content to go with what she ordered. It took a while to get our food but now understanding that they prepare traditionally and that the place was packed I was okay with that. My 3 crepes were made from waffle batter and topped with not only blueberries and chopped walnuts but also had two scoops of ice cream on it. The peaches were inside and I later learned they prepare the peaches fresh in the restaurant. Needless to say it was very good! They also weren't overfilling so I was able to finish it. Portion sizes here are very generous so you get more bang for your buck. My girlfriend loved her waffles and was glad I found a place that serves breakfast food even during the lunch hour. If waffles are not your thing they do offer French toast, omelets, as well as a bunch of sides including a fruit dish. What makes it nice is that you can order traditional made up waffles or customize them with a good number of add- ons listed at the bottom of your menu. I enjoyed the hot tea that I ordered with my crepes. It took time to get it refilled and reheated. They appear to be understaffed for the amount of people in here. Takeout is also available. Our waitress was friendly and helpful and took time out to explain things to both of us. Waffles INcaffeinated is a chain with other locations in Southside, Wexford, and Beaver County as well as downtown. Took a long time to get the right order and when I did, the goat cheese on top of my waffle had blue green mold in it(it was not blue cheese). I was excited to try Waffles INCaffeinated since it's nearly impossible to find gluten free waffles! I really loved the waffles I tried, so much so that we came back later that week to try even more waffle options. The gluten free waffles are great--there's really no way to tell that they're not "normal" waffles, and the toppings help bring it all together. I really enjoyed the choices between sweet and savory waffles. I wasn't too keen on designing my own waffle, but don't worry because the options they provide are plentiful and well-crafted. The downside to this place is that the wait can be crazy. The first time we came, I watched our food sit, ready to be brought to the table for 5-10 minutes while our waiter ran around to other tables. If the service were a bit better, this spot would definitely be 5 stars. Regardless, we will probably return because the gluten free (and vegan!) waffle options are great for those with food allergies or sensitivities. That alone is worth overlooking some minor service mishaps. One tip--arrive early, or sign up to be put in line through their website. And I swear to you, I cannot tell the difference between the regular one, prior to being GF. I love getting raspberries inside the waffle with coconut flakes and their house made vanilla syrup. Super simple, but delicious. I also enjoy their crab Benedict waffle as well, if you want a more savory option. Honestly, there's so many options to choose from. I love the fact that they're on wait list, so you can reserve your spot from your phone via the Yelp app during the busiest times. I am traveling from out of town and thought this place looked amazing so decided to do a to-go order and bring it back to my hotel to share with my partner for a late breakfast. I attempted to call two different numbers five times. The first number I called rang several times each time before going to a generic voicemail with nothing to identify the business. The second number I attempted to call rang 5-6 times, someone picked up without saying anything, and I was promptly (I assume) placed on hold as music started playing. I decided to walk from my hotel to the restaurant, place my order and wait for it to be prepared. The website said take out was available for this location. When I made it to the restaurant, the hostess told me they weren't taking take-out orders. Frustrating, but they were clearly slammed, so I assumed there were staffing issues or something. I went back out to come up with a plan B for breakfast. My partner decided to go ahead and get dressed to come down and I would go ahead and put our name on the list to eat-in the restaurant. As I'm standing next to the hostess stand, approximately 7-8 minutes after being told they don't take take-out orders, another person walks in. She has also been trying to call with no success and informs the restaurant staff of this. They offer zero explanation and seem annoyed by her statement. She states that she wants to place a to-go order... AND THEY IMMEDIATELY TAKE THE ORDER. Meanwhile, I'm standing right next to the hostess stand, by the hostess who told me they aren't taking to-go orders, while she's avoiding eye contact with me, and watching this lady give her to-go order. I've not had the food yet (hence the two stars on the off chance the food is epic) so I can't speak to that but if I weren't from out of town and had more time to find a different place (we have an event to attend soon) I would go someplace differently. The employees need to work on customer service, not providing different services to different people, their phone message/line needs updated, as does their website if they are only offering take-out to selective people. I sincerely hope the not offering take-out thing has nothing to do with me being part of a minority/marginalized group of people as the lady who was treated much differently than I was, gave no outward appearance of being part of a minority/marginalized group. And as I'm standing here writing this, a second person has come in to place a take-out order. The same hostess who told me no went to find an employee to take the order, while still avoiding eye contact or any interaction with me. Edited to add: as I'm sitting here, still waiting to be seated and give my order, the lady who walked in after I was told they weren't taking to-go orders and placed her to-go order just received her food and is leaving. The first time we went here I had the waffles and I was not impressed and we gave it a second try, this time I had scrambled omelette and potatoes. I could honestly say the best breakfast potatoes I have had, the fact it's a medley of potatoes giving you a sweet and savory taste is amazing! Both were super delicious. This morning after grabbing coffee at a local spot a coworker was hungry for brekkie and asked if I'd want to split something. When she said WafflesINC I couldn't refuse. We decided on the Megaberry waffle which is a waffle stuffed with raspberries and blueberries. Talk about a taste explosion for the mouth. Woah! It's also topped with more berries, whipped cream and vanilla sauce. The waffles are cooked to perfection with a lightness that doesn't make them hard or crunchy. Splitting this was definitely the way to go since it's pretty filling. Yay for having a location downtown though I'm not sure it's good for the old waistline! Decent waiting space. It's the front corner of the restaurant with seating benches, which is helpful. This location is in the heart of downtown, which guarantees rush hours, which is why I'm happy there is a decent waiting area. - Menu. I like the variety. There are many breakfast options- sweet and savory options, crepes, omelettes, fruity options, etc... it's nice to have options to accommodate what mood I'm in and/or what type of breakfast food I'm craving. - Quality. Yummers! The pico de gallo was fresh and spicy, which added to the flavor. The salsa wasn't overly spicy, but enough of a kick, which was great. The crab meat that was on my friend's Benny was delicious- not too sweet or briney. There's a good amount of crab meat, too- around the size of your fist. The eggs were nicely poached and the yolks runny. The fruit salad was pretty fresh. The fruits were pieces oranges, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, apple, and pear. With the exception of the pineapple, the rest of the fruit seemed fresh. I also didn't taste the extra sweetness of added sugar in the fruit salad, which I liked. - Take away. While I was waiting, a couple customers came in to pick up their orders. They only waited a few minutes to pay and for their food to be wrapped up. From what I could tell, it looked like the food was prepared fresh and wasn't just sitting around. It's nice to see this, because it's an additional option. What's not - Price. Many of their dishes don't come with a side, which I don't like. Sides cost extra. - Order mistake. I ordered the veggie omelette and that's definitely not what I got. I'm not certain how there was any confusion. I didn't bring up the mistake, which is my bad. At least it was yummy. - Be prepared for it to be busy, because of the location. Made it to the third Waffles location in the city this past weekend. They were super busy and right on the route for the Pride Parade. I noticed that it took a lot longer to get our food that day than the usual fast service from Waffles Inc, but nonetheless everyone loved what they ordered. The signature cappuccinos were the hit for the table. I had the Southern Waffle, covered in Sausage Gravy. Wish I would have paired it with a bowl of fruit to help cut down the richness of it.
