Beautiful historical location, prompt and friendly service, broad menu! Really enjoyed by breakfast here. Their drink menu is impressive and would be a fun happy hour spot. My Root juice drink was tasty; made me feel healthy after a week of dining out indiscriminately. The server recommended the Kazaam (shakshuka) dish, and it was solid! It's one thing when the service is bad and another when BOT service and food are bad. Upon entering, we were seated by the host. A friendly, smiling young man. He was courteous, well spoken and friendly. We sat there for about 10-12 minutes. No one approached the table. We looked over to what appeared to be a bar area and we saw two servers standing there talking and showing each other their phones. My wife said, "With our luck, one of those two is our server." Sure enough, when they were finally done talking, one came over to our table....no smile and a big audible sigh. She asked what we wanted to drink, we gave our order and she returned with our beverages. After another 10 minute wait she came back to take our order. When asked about a certain dish, came another big sigh, eye roll and and a rote description of said dish. The food arrived and one of the orders was wrong. Another wait to get her attention. We asked for the item to be redone as we had ordered it. And she even asked how we wanted it! You got it...another eye roll and a big sigh. At least she was well oxygenated! The dish came back with the very same results. On that issue we gave up. Then came the wait for the check. Once again the two servers were chatting, no heads turned to check on their tables. My son went over to get the check. When the check arrived, it was attitude city. She accused us of picking on her because she was only a server. It's obviously how she saw herself. We then asked for the manager who was quick to side with the server. She said that nothing seemed to satisfy us and that we had a problem. IN SHARP CONTRAST. I have been to the Speckled Egg on the South Side many times. From the Host/Hostess to the servers to the bus staff, everyone had a smile, chatted with their customers, laughed and it was always a great experience. The manager came over since he recognized me from being there many times and we chatted for a minute. We are talking Night and Day. Completely two different experiences from server to management styles. To me there is only one Speckled Egg and one complete waste of time (Downtown). read more

We said we never been before and again asked for recommendations and were again meant with silence. Odd. We split a half order of French toast as an "appetizer". It came out cold and lackluster. Took 50 minutes for our food to come out. I had the lox and loaded. It was a lox bagel. Nothing special. He got the Hen n Hash. It was covered in dill and herbs, but no seasoning otherwise. The Union trust building is hiding this gem inside. Sit under the beautiful dome while sipping your coffee or grab a breakfast or a lunch at one of their tables. They have few pastries on offer. They have a bar for drinks and an espresso machine for great coffee and very knowledgeable baristas. It's across the street from the Omni. My flat white was delicious and I'm definitely coming back here. Well I absolutely have no issues with Starbucks and that as usual they might go to place because this is definitely something to do when you're visiting and in an out-of-town or as an amazing experience at a really old beautiful building. read more

My wife and I took a recent trip to Pittsburgh. We had two mornings in town and had a tale of two breakfasts. The Speckled Egg provided the upscale and elevated breakfast, that was a nice contrast to the rustic and local breakfast we had the next day. Our waitress was friendly and professional. After some deliberation, I went with a bowl that included eggs, chicken sausage, sweet potatoes and a nice garnish of dill. The dill surprisingly elevated the whole dish. My wife enjoyed an omelette. This place was the first place me and my partner stopped at for brunch, while visiting Pittsburg for the first time ever. The food here was so good and felt very home cooked. It's really hard to find that nowadays. The staff were also extremely friendly, welcoming and interpersonal. The watermelon drink was so refreshing, I finished it within 2 minutes haha. I think the french toast was best i've had in a while and it was a good entree to balance with the side of sausage I ordered which has more of a maple syrup sweetness to it. The restaurant is located inside of a building alongside other restaurants. It's super cool inside, as I included the ceiling after one of the staff asked if I, "looked up yet?" I walked here, so I can't speak to the parking situation. The food was simple, organic, and very tasty -- fresh flavors with a clean presentation. It's definitely a place I'd recommend to anyone staying or working nearby and looking for a good local breakfast or brunch. That said, it's not necessarily somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit again -- not because it wasn't good, but because once was good enough for me. Overall, not a bad place. A pretty small dining area located in a large billing which I'm currently not remembering the name of. The host was very nice and sat us down and offered suggestions for places to visit and how to get there in the Pittsburgh area, so that was very much appreciated. Our waitress was pretty decent, but I wish she would've came by more often because I really wanted to catch up which I never ended up getting before I finish my order. The mail that I got was a little dry to the taste with all the potatoes and I needed some Hines but it happens. This was my first time going to The Speckled Egg. It's right in downtown Pittsburgh and the moment you walk in it's super cute. It's small but cozy and honestly feels like the perfect brunch spot after a night out or if you're just meeting up with friends to gossip over breakfast. We made reservations which I definitely recommend. I ordered the I Am Kazzam and I'm gonna be real... it was not for me. I love trying new things and convincing myself I'll like them, but my taste buds were like girl please. Meanwhile my boyfriend had the patty melt and it was amazing. I took one bite and immediately regretted my entire existence because that should have been my order. We also got the Aloha Pudding because the ingredients gave beach vibes. Came here for happy hour. The That's My Jam cocktail was delicious! Not too sweet and a great deal for happy hour. Just as a warning, the drink was pretty strong. The pimento cheese and pickles were pretty good too, but a little misleading as it came with pickled onions, cauliflower, and beans, along with the advertised pickles and crackers. They have pancakes with poppyseeds that you can't order without the poppyseeds. Meaning that batter is probably made days or weeks ahead. It's also a very chaotic layout for a restaurant, it looks more like an airport restaurant than something that should be in a cool old building. read more

It's located inside the Union Trust Building and there's seating "outside" in the main halfway of the building, inside, and at a small bar. My Tea with the Bees cocktail was sweet but excellent and tea forward. Our food was also pretty good and I have no complaints there. You have to love the ambiance of this Speckled Egg location especially if you get seated outside in view of the beautiful decor. At this location, they've previously made us wait when one person in our party was late. However, this time they did seat me while my friend ran late. I've hunted down the Shakshukas all over Pittsburgh; the one here regrettably now falls at the bottom. The "I am Kazam" had a serious issue with spice levels. I could tell the issue: someone put in too much cumin either on its own or as part of a curry powder blend. It came out with with too much latent low heat aftertaste. Kinda ruined the dish :-( Would be really hesitant in ever ordering it again. My friend had a simpler omelet, which had no issues. They were out of the juice I wanted. We dropped in to the Speckled Egg for breakfast as it was conveniently located across the street from our hotel. It sites in the lobby of a lovely old Pittsburgh bank building and it looked like it was going to be a good place for us to get a quick bite. The staff were young and attentive. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't that great. My wife ordered the biscuits and gravy, which she described as tasting like pot roast and gravy, not what she expected for a breakfast meal. The bagel I ordered wasn't very good either, just lackluster and flavorless. Another amazing meal at TSE. This was one of the first restaurants I went to when I moved downtown - it's been awhile, but omg it's still just as delicious as ever. Their patty melt is the perfect brunch order for the super hungry, savory lover! I really love the sweetness of the bread and butter pickles too. The customer service (mostly two server, unfortunately, I forgot their names) were top tier. I've had Through the Garden, Home fries, the Poppy seed pancake, the turmeric shot as well as the root juice. Everything was delicious except for the Poppy seed pancake, that was horrible. For the price of everything, regarding what it was, the quality and taste of the food, it was a little expensive. The more I went the quality decreased. It was a Wednesday morning around 9 so it wasn't too busy. My friend ordered an omelette, another the patty melt and I had to try the fish sandwich. Yum!!! Everything was delicious but the patty melt was the star of the show. We were glad we had to walk back to the hotel afterwards because the meal was filling and huge portions.
