Sometimes the scorching sun just wears you out and you need a nice cold beer to quench the thirst. Oh wait, that must be the inner alcoholic rearing its ugly head. The bartender was nice and helpful. We ordered up a few beers and wow they were ice cold. You cannot imagine how happy I was. We enjoyed a few rounds and had a nice lab running around the bar to keep us entertained. None of the slot machines work, so don't bother with them. One thing I learned out here is that you can buy alcohol to-go here. Cash and carry. My friend who seems to be a bigger AA member than myself managed to buy a bottle of Coyote 100, which is 100% ETOH. Now that is serious. When my friend bought this, the bartender said this, "after a few shots of Coyote 100, your cousin starts to look good." So I guess the stereotype is true. Let's be honest here, when I'm in the Badlands, I'm going to Wagon Wheel. There isn't anything good on the menu and the beer is cheap. But it's a local joint with good service and if you're expecting a true dive experience, then you'll enjoy the place. They've got a good jukebox too. We were directed here by an employee at the Badlands visitor center. It was lunchtime and it looked like the restaurant inside the park was packed, so we were looking for alternatives. When we pulled up, I confess I thought the park employee might have been pulling a fast one on the out-of-towners. The Wagon Wheel is a bar, in a low-slung building clad in corrugated metal panels, and inside it's pretty dark and worn down. And we were greeted by the biggest lab I've ever seen, who seems to have the run of the place. But it turned out to be a good place to grab a lunch. Our server (who was also the bartender & the cook) was honest with us about the food choices (for example, warning us that she just microwaved the chicken sandwich). She makes a pretty good cheeseburger pizza. This is not fancy, and it's not that well-kept, but if you're looking for a place to wet your whistle away from the Badlands tourists, give it a try. We loved finding this place after touring Badlands National Park. Outdoor dining is a must for us so we passed by the other restaurant for the very reason. The bartender was a bit gruff since we didn't know that the menu was hanging on the wall in the middle of the restaurant. Move it to the front so folks can order to go or order for outside dining. We had great beef/buffalo burgers and hot fries (a double win for me). The beers were cold but if you have a sign for Summer Shady and don't have it on hand, remove the sign. read more

This place is great. At first when we sat down , I thought ... this is a bad idea . Then, it started raining and decided it would be best to ride out the storm. After a long day driving and hiking the Badlands, we decided to stop in here for a between-meal bite and a drink. We were so glad we did! Located in Interior, this bar/restaurant is not far from where we were camping at Cedar Lodge Campground. No, it's not fancy. But it was just what we needed at that moment. Greasy food and cold beverages. And we love dive bars anyway! As a bonus, we had the pleasure of chatting with the staff and a few locals, too. Though we were tourists ourselves) we really felt like we had escaped the throngs when we walked in. Wagon Wheel has friendly staff, yummy food (we had pizza and a burger - the pizza was exceptional especially for a dive bar in my opinion) and strong drinks. The bartender even put my lime-a-rita in a frosty mug with a slice of lime. We felt well taken care of at the Wagon Wheel. The bar was well-stocked and included some microbrews as well as the typical domestic beers. Carryout liquor service is available and they also sell bags of ice, which was really important for us campers. We'd go back in a heartbeat. read more

A real classic! Decor untouched from at least the 50's, and a crusty but efficient and ultimately friendly bartender/owner straight out of central casting. My pizza was homemade and delicious, and my brother's burger was decent (though he couldn't get lettuce and tomato on it because, as we were told, they don't grow that stuff around there, what they grow is meat.) Recommended by hotel staff as a place to get a good burger and simple bar food well after other locations have closed. My wife, son and I had burgers and our daughter had mini corn dogs. I had mine with onion petals which were tasty. I noticed what appeared to be a hand made pizza other patrons were having and it looked good. The two people working were very friendly and out food was hot when it came out. The location is a bar and a packaged liquor store so the bartender who doubles as your server is working three jobs when you factor in the packaged liquor sales. As a result it may take a few minutes for them to take your order or get back to you, but we found the service to be good given everything they are doing. It is a whole in the wall so don't look to be impressed by the decor or ambiance. Bathrooms are cozy for one, but we came for the food not the bathrooms so we were not disappointed. Locals were friendly and if I lived here this would probably be my watering hole of choice too. read more

The last reviewer was spot-on in her review of the steak sandwich, and the place in general. With few other options on a Saturday night, after a tiring day of driving and hiking, we decided to eat dinner at the Wagon Wheel Bar. Upon entering, the bartender begrudgingly walked up to us and, in a put-out manner, asked "Can I help you?" We sat in the far corner, away from the drunken mass in the center of the bar -- the obvious out-of-towners who were there to eat, and not to drink. The bartender didn't try to disguise her dislike for us; there were no smiles, and there was no warmth at all. The food was horrendous. The steak sandwich was like this: a piece of cheap meat fished out of the back of the freezer, that was thrown under a steak weight without any seasoning, until it was severely overcooked, and about the thickness of a pancake. It was the type of sandwich that you eat, all the while wondering about which hour the nausea will strike. (Fortunately, there was no food poisoning.) We also had onion rings, cheese balls, and chicken strips. The onion rings weren't really rings; they were more like "onion petals," because none were intact. They, too, were fished out of a freezer and thrown into a deep-fryer. So, too, were the chicken strips, and the cheese balls. I liked the economy-sized bottle of ranch at the table, though. Went here while staying in Badlands NP. Definitely recommend that you take the short drive and pay these folks a visit. It's a clean, family friendly place to get a bite to eat. I am not certain if the Wagon Wheel has gone down in quality or if the previous reviewers were being overly generous. In either case, do not eat here. There appeared to be no real kitchen-and even if there was, it was not being used. Following previous reviewers, I ordered the steak sandwich, with cheese on it and fries on the side. What I got from this order was a slab of reheated meat about a quarter of an inch thick and tough as can be. Two slices of American cheese laid on top was my cheese, and the whole thing was served on an oily/greasy roll. The fries were clearly frozen and then reheated. Though there is not much selection around the Badlands, do not visit the Wagon Wheel-you will be beyond disappointed. read more

The two folks working there, probably owners, were super friendly and accommodating. The menu was small but just what we wanted. It was tasty. The place was clean and VERY well air conditioned. If you're looking for a nice place to eat, this isn't it. If you're looking for a place that's open at night and will give you decent food (which is hard to do in this area around the Badlands), then you've found your place. It has a rough-and-tumble dive kind of feel. We were there around 10pm on a Tuesday night. There were a bunch of local guys around a large table who had been drinking a lot. It wouldn't be too noticeable under normal circumstances except there weren't many people other than them there. They were extremely loud, and at one point were going behind the bar when the server wasn't getting their drinks fast enough. And one of them had their eight- or nine-year-old kid with him. I bring it all up because it added to the "we're in a dive bar in the middle of nowhere" vibe that you might experience in a movie. The menu was fairly small. I ordered a burger and fries. It wasn't too bad, but it reminded me more of cafeteria food than bar food. I was disappointed they didn't have wings--this would be the kind of place I'd want to order wings. They serve some kind of fried chicken gizzards. I didn't have the courage to try those in this place. The place served its function, though--it gave us food and drinks, late at night, in what's essentially the middle of nowhere. read more

Do not recommend. This is basically one of the only places to eat in this small town. We ordered 3 pizzas. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when we got them and started to eat them that they were frozen pizzas. Probably cost them $3 each. We were charged $43. They were 12 in pies and absolutely horrible. While waiting were not offered even a glass of water. Should have driven into Rapid City for our meal. Just awful!!! read more

Vibe of this place is good. However, the food is cheap and tastes like it. There's not very much to eat. It feels a little sticky all around, and it's fun here to watch the game while eating, but the chairs aren't comfortable enough to stay here for the entire length of the game. We showed up about 10 minutes before they opened. Some guy came out while we waited in our truck for them to open and aggressively said "we aren't open until around 11:00". We noticed there were tables outside and had been driving for awhile so we decided to hang out outside. When we asked if we could sit outside to wait, the guy said "that would be preferred, would you like something to drink?" When I asked what they had he said "what do you want? Whiskey, beer? I am currently on a road trip with my buddy and obviously the badlands was on the list. We spent an entire day hiking up the most bizarre mountains anyone has ever seen. To say the least we needed a beer. We rode our bikes into a nearby town called interior(pop. 67). We saw the wagon wheel and jumped right in. Being from NY i had my doubts but i consider my self an open minded person. We went in and met the bar tender who was nice as pie. We spent the entire afternoon drinking and laughing while playing rummy 500. We met bikers and ranchers who were some of the nicest people in the world. To say the least it was an AMAZING time. New owners over the past couple of months, cleaning up the place nicely. Tractor, the humongous chocolate lab is no longer allowed in the bar/grille; but he was at the door to greet us when we left. On vacation riding motorcycles through South Dakota and a large sign on a tractor trailer said "all bikers must stop" so we thought we'd give it a whirl. Jerry the bartender was super nice, handed us a marker and some tape when we said we wanted to contribute to the dollar bills decorating the place. The pizza was delicious, my uncle had a burger he scarfed down and my aunt had the buffalo burger, everything was whipped up for us in about ten minutes and it was great! Not many choices in the Badlands, especially at 9 o'clock at night. The Wagon Wheel was pretty much empty, two people at the bar and a couple other playing the gambling machines. It's a big place. One guy was the bartender and cook. He wasn't very efficient at providing alcohol (I had to remind him) but he prepared the (ready-made, bar-type) food pretty fast. They were out of a few things, so we ended up with the mini-pizzas and an order of onion rings (which was like 5 onion rings).
