While visiting the Badlands we had some time to kill before I went back to take photos of the Milky Way over the Badlands. We stopped by earlier to find out what time they were open until and even on July 4th they were still open till 10pm and even said we could walk in at 9:30 and still get served. We came back close to 9 pm. I wanted something light since I was going to be taking pictures for a while. The ultimate wedge salad with sirloin was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and my brothers bacon cheeseburger looked like something you would see on an ad. The service was phenomenal, they have a full bar and some nice cocktails as well. It's beyond me how anybody can eat at Wall Drug when this place is on the next block. They make a fantastic Burger. They make several quality salads. The steak fries are terrific and the sides like Brussels sprouts are cooked perfectly. I haven't had the steaks but they serve prime beef and if the burgers are any indication, them I wouldn't hesitate to try them if that's what you're looking for. Is it perfect? No. The salads are overdressed (no surprise for South Dakota). But you won't do better around here. Wander into Wall Drug to say you did. Get a 5 cent cup of coffee if you like. Ate here twice on our Badlands trip in November (Thanksgiving weekend when the town is like basically shut down)! The first night we tried the Buffalo Ravioli Bolognese & a steak with "seasonal veggies" (multi-colored-carrots). My Bolognese was good, but a little too much flavor on the meat sauce overwhelmed the ravioli. The Carrots with the steak were undercooked with no flavor. They really like Basalmic! its on the salads, veggie drizzle, coated the meatloaf - thinking in the bolognese too based on the flavor profile. 2nd day we got the buffalo meatloaf to share - my dad kept going on and on telling everyone how that's the best meatloaf he's ever had. It came with the carrots again & broccoli, plus mash potatoes. The Wedge Salad - probably the BEST I've ever had! We got it both nights! Now we are addicted to ordering them every time we have dinner together. I also tried the Huckleberry margarita (they were out of blackberries to make the Blackberries & Cream but I really wanted to try that too). It was sweet but unique. Last night in Wall and decided to try the Salty Steer even though the yelp reviews were mixed. Arrived around 6;00 pm and were seated quickly at a high to near the bar. Had to flag down a waiter to take our order. But service turned out good. The restaurant has a modern western theme which was warm and inviting. They also had a wedding going on up on the second level which was fun ands exciting. As for the food, I ordered the wedge salad with steak. The steak was chucks of steak (mo small portion) for $12.00 extra and they were cold but flavorful. The salad portion was also on the small side. My husband's side wedge salad was much larger. Although the menu selection is scarce our entrees were well prepared with a more than adequate portion size. Service was excellent even with a wedding party being held on the upper Miranda. As you can see from the pics the vibe is hopping and sophisticated which was totally unexpected at this tourist town eatery. i just got the regular burger here for dinner with a side of fries, and the burger was pretty good (a little on the drier side if i'm being honest), but the fries were AMAZING!! i'm not used to getting diner fries and they were absolutely amazing. i haven't stopped thinking about them since this meal so i would definitely recommend you get them no matter what!! the restaurant is spacious with a lot of seating and it's not too loud that you can't have a conversation which is nice. the service is also really good! i'd recommend stopping here for a meal if you're in the area. read more

It's a spacious and nicely decorated gastropub. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. If you are not here for the beef or buffalo meat, they have some other chicken, salad, salmon, spinach ravioli options. Service was very good. I had an alcoholic drink which was good. I had the bone in ribeye which had no bone. For what is charged for that steak I would have expected better. The flavor was great but it had a huge amount of fat. Also, the vegetables all had soy sauce on them because they decorated the plate with it which to me personally made the vegetables bad. Please read this review in its entirety. The food is very good. The service is terrible. I was a waiter for 10 years, we have been touring the area for many weeks. The service was by far the worst we have had. Our waiter seemed disinterested, annoyed, and to be honest, downright rude. I definitely do not recommend coming here if you were waited on by a gentleman whose name starts with A. However, the food is superb. The meatloaf made with bison is excellent, and the mashed potatoes might be the best I've ever had. The prime rib sandwich is worth your time. With better waiters this place might be worth your time. I went to Salty Steer after looking at their online menu and noting that they had buffalo steaks! That's something I've never had before and it's not something commonly found in restaurants in other areas. Salty Steer definitely seemed like the best place in Wall to try out. The restaurant is inside kind of a mall/office building and occupies a portion of the first floor. It's pretty easy to find since the signs for the restaurant are plastered all around the exterior. They have a menu posted on a table right in front and when I saw it, I was really confused as it didn't match the online menu at all (they've since updated the menu). They changed a bunch of items and now only offer buffalo steak in the summer, June-Sept. I got there a couple of days late and they confirmed they were out. Oh well, we still decided to go to try some of their other items. Buffalo Meatloaf ($27) - The meatloaf comes with a wedge salad and a choice of either blue cheese or ranch dressing. In addition to the dressing, the salad is also drizzled with balsamic to add some additional sweetness and tang. The toppings are quite plentiful - there's sliced red onion, pine nuts, gorgonzola cheese, and plenty of bacon bits sprinkled around. I normally don't like gorgonzola, but there isn't too much and it's not that strong in comparison to the dressing. There are also sliced cherry tomatoes scattered around the fringes of the lettuce. Some other places drown the salad with way too much dressing, but here, the ratio is pretty good. Overall it's a well constructed wedge salad, although they don't de-core the iceberg lettuce. (4/5) The meatloaf itself is quite good. It's fluffy and soft and perfectly seasoned. They normally serve it with homemade barbecue sauce drizzled on top but I opted to get it on the side. The sauce is actually not needed given how moist and tender the meat is. The sauce itself is sweet and tangy and I wonder if they put huckleberry in it? It's quite good and perfect with the meatloaf (5/5). The meatloaf is served with mashed potatoes - salted well, fluffy, skin-on and well mashed, topped with melted cheese. For some reason The Salty Steer doesn't provide spoons so you have to eat the mash with a fork (4/5). They also give a side of veggies, included roasted brussels sprouts and carrots. The carrots are a bit disappointing - they are pretty tasteless and not sweet at all. While the texture is still a little bit firm (but cooked) it feels like they boiled the carrots, resulting in all the flavor leeching out. (3/5) Open Range Buffalo Burger ($26) - The buffalo/bison flavor is very apparent in the meat in this burger, unlike the meatloaf. It is also super lean, and even though I ordered the burgers medium, I felt like the patties were exceptionally dry. A generous heaping of cooked huckleberry, which add sweet fruity notes, helps with the moisture, but it doesn't make up for the shortfall. There is apparently supposed to be bacon jam on the burger, but I couldn't really identify it, and even if included, I'm sure it isn't added in large amounts enough to overcome the dry burger. The two patties are served on a small pile of onion straws that help accentuate the dryness. (2/5) The burger comes with a choice of steak fries or potato salad - we went with the fries and have to say that they aren't steak fries. Instead, they are pretty much identical to Lamb Weston Potato Dippers. At any rate, they are lightly seasoned, fried until they develop a light crisp on the exterior and a fluffy interior. (4/5) Spoiler alert: I had several more buffalo/bison burgers over the course of this road trip, and this was easily the worst of the bunch. Definitely avoid that dish, but I'm sure most of the rest of the menu items are pretty good. Bathrooms - Shared office bathrooms. Go through the rear door into the main building. Went here for dinner on a Friday night after exploring the Badlands. It is beside Wall Drug! The restaurant is very spacious. Our server Karol was very attentive and nice. The baby wedge salad was awesome! Crisp, fresh vegetables with very refreshing ranch and balsamic glaze. Steak pasta was good. Great drinks and good food. I couldn't pass up a Huckleberry Old Fashioned, excellent drink. The steaks were cooked perfectly to medium rare for myself and rare for my son. They service was quick and efficient. The inside of the restaurant was clean and modern with a rustic aesthetic, plenty of seating and room between the tables. My only complaint was with one of the sides, the creamed spinach was at least three quarters cream very little spinach at all. The flavor was great though. Looks to be a fairly new place so they probably have a few kinks to work out. I imagine once they hit their stride it will be a fantastic dining experience.
