I decided that trying a new BBQ place was in order as a proper way to celebrate my birthday, so the hubby and I made our way out to the Wagon Wheel to see if it held up to it's great reviews. When we arrived, it was almost noon and there weren't very many cars in the lot. It was Father's Day Sunday at lunch and I half expected that it would be much busier, so I wasn't sure how good it was really going to be. When we walked in, they were ready for us to put in our order but it took us a bit to figure out what we wanted. I decided on brisket and ribs - those are my go-to meats, so I had to go for it. I went with mac & cheese and potato salad sides. Hubby got brisket, mac & cheese, and coleslaw. We grabbed a seat inside. Our original plan was to sit outside since they have outdoor seating, but there was no shade to be had and it was a warm day out, so we opted to stay inside. As mentioned, it wasn't very busy, so there was plenty of room inside. All the tables were well kept and clean. It didn't take very much waiting before our meals were ready and delivered to us. It was a boatload of food and all DELICIOUS. All of it. The meat was all tender and juicy, full of really nice BBQ flavor, the mac & cheese had a nice smoky taste that made it so tasty, and the potato salad was a sold staple. I ate half my meal and saved the other half for leftovers the next day. Despite only having half, I was quite full, but also quite satisfied. I finally made it to Wagon Wheel to try their BBQ. They have an extensive menu, with everything you'd expect. I tried the burnt ends and brisket. The sauce on the burnt ends was a tad sweet, but both meat options were tender. The brisket was quite fatty, so I found myself scraping the fat away. The sides could be improved. The cornbread did not have a lot of flavor. It needed sweetness or a side of honey. The potato salad was good, but maybe not the freshest. The coleslaw and pickles were the best out of the sides. Service is excellent and the staff are friendly. The outdoor patio is shaded and stress free. I would come back because it's hard to find a good BBQ place in the Bay Area. read more

The ribs were hours away from done, the were chewy still and needed a few more hours. The brisket was sliced about half inch thick and the fat was not rendered at all,. It doesn't help that the slices I received were right at the deckel. The tritip was also sliced about a half inch thick and subsequently was chewy as well. I tried the sausage as well and it was ok. If you go to another location like BBQ152 or Aptos BBQ I generally have a better experience and things are cooked low and slow. read more

It's sad, really. We dined here three months ago, and the food was absolutely amazing. I was still excited, picking brisket bits from my teeth just ten minutes after we left. Everything was phenomenal; we were there on a Sunday at 8:30 pm--only thirty minutes before closing. I felt it was almost rude to order so late, but we decided to do the same since other diners were already eating and people in line were ordering for dine-in. We went for the three-meat platter, choosing brisket, chicken, and ribs, with sides of beans, cornbread, and mac and cheese. We devoured every last crumb; the food was cooked to perfection, and we couldn't stop raving about how good the BBQ was for days after. Fast forward to tonight, a Sunday at 8:05 pm, and we walked into the familiar aromas and setup. There was a line of customers ordering to dine there, so we followed suit. We opted to share the four-meat platter, which included ribs, brisket, tri-tip, a hot link, and sides of baked potato, mac and cheese, and grilled cornbread. Unfortunately, it was a letdown. About 60% of the brisket was fatty, the ribs were also fatty, the tri-tip was nearly rare (still moooooing), and the hot link was undercooked. Yes, it was pricey, and I definitely should have spoken up. The meat was chewy and packed with fat; it seemed like it had been cooked to be reheated but left to dry out before being heated again, resulting in overcooking. Everything had a leathery texture or was cold, almost burnt, and dried out. This was a complete contrast to our first experience. The standout difference was that a manager was present during our initial visit, while this time it felt like we were imposing as they were winding down for the night. The staff saw that we did not like what we were eating and ignored us. It was an uncomfortable atmosphere. Once we started eating, the other people had similar body language. This reflects a staff that does not care about anything but their paycheck. Honestly, I recommend skipping this place. The first experience was so good that this subsequent visit tarnished that memory by being *so bad*. It's not worth the money spent when you need to follow it up with antacids. read more

Was really surprised how excellent the food was. Service was great, friendly staff. I'm from out of town, came to see a show at the shoreline amphitheater and found this little gem. We decided to try this out based on the high reviews and we were in the area. When we arrived, ordered then had to wait for about 20 minutes given that nobody had ordered before us. All people that were there already had their food. We received our food and were AMAZED with all the fat included in the brisket & the burnt ends. My brisket had huge pieces of fat and my partner's burnt ends has several pieces of fat covered in BBQ sauce. What is shown in picture is what I left, I couldn't finish what they gave me. I tried both the original and spicy BBQ sauces on the table - both are very good. The mac and cheese was good (maybe a little more salt would be good, but then, I am a salt nut), as was the potato salad. Garlic bread was also good - not too hard, like some are. 2. Regular Gaucho, which is a brisket sandwich. Had it with cole slaw. The brisket was tender, juicy, flavorful, with just the right amount of fat. Cole slaw was good. We also ordered a hot link, that was on the spicier side but good. The tray came with pickled onions, jalapeños, and cucumbers which were tasty, and every table has barbecue sauce.
